Football / Re: Do the Americans Have our Number or not?
« on: February 08, 2006, 12:54:07 PM »
I saw some good posts...Vibetrini and 1989.  But somehow ah getting the feeling plenty men talking more based on emotions than actual facts or knowledge.

One thing I have learnt over the years is that you cannot continue to do the same thing every time and expect to get different results.

I have not seen anything done by the football authorities to advance our football for the past ten years.  As a matter of fact we get so accustomed to getting nothing...that whatever lil piece a shit they give us, is a cause for celebration and jubilation and a press release.  When we now thinking about a strategy for WC 2010 and beyond, everybody else had a plan for 2002 and before.  Since I was a lil boy, I hearing phrases like...we MUST keep this team together...this team will be the nucleus of the senior team in years to come......NOTHING happen !  We never had enough time to prepare for the tournament and after that man just go they own way and forget bout everything else.

Caribbean people on the whole lack mental attitude and that is reflected in all our cultures.  Before we could do something, we will think up a million excuses why it can't be done.

Our netball team was joint world champs back in the eighties...where netball is today...can't even win caribbean championship.

West Indies cricket was boss...everybody else develope and leave we behind.

If you think about it long enough, our Soca Warriors was supposed to qualify.  The hex was designed for our qualification.  If we didn't qualify then I woulda been surprised.  Because when it started we NEVER expected to beat Mexico, USA or Costa Rica,...Guatemala we know would a be a fight up, but we chances better than good...and Panama was supposed to be a walkover.  So all in all the worst we coulda do was come 4th...and then playoff.  We chances with any of them Asian team woulda be good too.

So don't be fooled by qualification and think that we football on the rise...the Gold Cup bring we back to reality.  And like Vibetrini say on a good day we alright, but the second 11 team...  ???

What we HOPE is that the current team's success bring some motivation to the younger players., but if the administrators don't do something different USA will always have our number.

Football / Re: The pro league might be turning around
« on: January 30, 2006, 02:43:06 PM »
Things looking better, but still PLENTY room for improvement.

I would like to see the PFL do more marketing of the league.  Sometimes yuh does only hear about a game by word of mouth.  Foreign sports and horse racing does occupy more pages in the newspapers than local football on the whole.  Big big games playing here, sometimes a finals and yuh getting pics with some Serie A games that take place a week ago covering up the back page.  If not is Tiger Woods win again.

If they get back to community based teams, they should get better representation in the crowds.
The clubs themselves would do well to hire buses (free transport to away games).
Get good quality supporter jersies and other team paraphernalia, magazines (cheap at first), websites, Proper youth feeder programs
Ladies teams
Better administrative functions
The players themselves could help out too by not playing in fete matches and back yard small goal for money and risking injuries.  If I know I could see one or two players in a lil five-a-side on de block by me...wha I going and pay money to see them in the stadium for ?

With better promotion, hopefully in the next couple years, we would see men in T&T wearing jerseys with WE players' names on it...not #23 Jordan...and Beckham etc.  I does feel nice when ah see Yorke and Stern name on jerseys.

But we coming to come and Trinis have to get up off they blasted cheap arse and go to support the teams, is only then the league would prosper.

« on: January 30, 2006, 10:54:51 AM »
Any topic like this one is sure to NEVER get a concensus.

Filho, ah like how yuh break it down to Leo...I agree with Leo being better than Yorke and Stern, but men from yesteryear would say that Leo was nothing compared to 'Twinkle Toes' Brewster, Archibald and dem fellas.

This is like judging between Maradonna and Pele....different era...different style...different team...different set of playing rules...nowadays different type of balls, boots, kits, fields...everything different so it hard to judge who is the best unless yuh come up with some kinda algorithm like a FIFA ranking system...and even then it go have skeptics.

Anything to beef up the defence I for that..  I just find that Dog and Lawrence does look suspect in the middle dey.  I might actually give Lawrence the edge because he certainly more comfortable with the ball at his feet.  Against the latin and central american teams, both of them struggle.  They not cut out for the short passing game at all.  I does watch how easy the Mexicans does penetrate we defence boy, even them waste-a-time Panamanians had a go at them fellas.

One thing for sure Beenie will go with an extra defender before a striker.

Alberta, I supporting what you saying. We need to have all football in Trinidad covered. To me it seems that no one cares about women soccer in Trinidad. It's not about fan base per sya but about our associations taking the necessary steps to address the challenges facing our women's teams.

I have been following women football for sometime and Trinidad women's team has made no progress whatsoever. We've gotten better player, but the team in and of itself has had no visible improvements and /or success.

They say a sign of stupidity is when you do the same thing everytime and expect to get a different result.

For years, ever since I could remember myself in football, we...meaning all T&T and the administrators of sports, especially football have never changed the way we do things, but always expect to win competitions.  Every other country could recognise our talents, lure them away, nuture them and keep them as their own, because we can't or not willing to do anything about it.

I fedup hear coaches saying, "we have no funds for the team", " we didn't have enough time to prepare for the tournament, but we will give it our all"....and this is for annual and bi-annual tournaments ah talking bout.  Every fricking sports team does say the same thing over and over again.

One of my many opinions on this topic is that to Trinis, sports is a game or a hobby or whatever, but is just something you play until you get good at it.  The rest of the world sees sports as a lucrative business...money earning ventures..a profession just like medicine, law, catering nursing etc.  So they hire professionals to see about their businesses.   A lot of our administrators are not qualified in sports mangement, but they used to play the game real good, so now they are either a coach, manager or president of the sporting body and have no clue about sports marketing and administration, so the rest of the country will only get involved in supporting when de waggon rolling down dey side.  Is nothing short of LUCK and a bit of outside help that have T&T where we are in world sports.

check this one...hear dis f#ckin waggonist dj on radio in tnt the day of the bahrain match (1st leg) check dis c#nt....he big fresh water yankee/yardie accent bigging up ( and shoutin out de warriors....)...he put on the song with check de danger..latapy inna de area....but the song starts off with a whole different groove ( for those who know the song well)....midway its goes to the section with latas and ting right....cacahole c#nt dj take off the song before it get to the middle section and say "" yea mon yea mon...i was really looking for the song wit latapy inna de area...my bad my bad""...and mix in a next tune.....i jess start tuh cuss....what a f#ckin c#nt.....and he will probably end up with world cup tickets.....tnt tnt tnt

Big M, dem nowadays DJ is johnny-come-latelys yuh know, men like de Don and Harold Thompson, Laundry woulda know the song, but is lil boys on the radio now.  Jus Jase woulda know too, but I ain't think he like football too much.

That remind mih of a post where somebody get vex because them DJ's on radio now not even saying that SOCA is combination of African and Indian rythms because they just don't know de culture.

On a side note, allyuh know that the part with "ee ay ay oh, check the danger"...that come from an old ASWAD song from around de same time.  The group is some rastas from England and came to T&T to perform a little earlier.  Sound Rev take a lil sample from dem and big it up.  When they start with the 'football dance' on top de truck, man in the stadium gone crazy and thought for sure we arse dead because this flecking stadium go crumble on we today.  Jus because JACK over sell tickets....ah STRAYING !!!

Talking 'bout defenders...what allyuh really think about Dog and Lawrence in the middle dey.  Somehow ah feel they kinda suspect.  Yeah Lawrence score the goal that carryin we, but ah feel he wouldn't be able to cope with them fellas from Paraguay who like the lil short knocks in the 18 yd until they score.  It might be easier against Sweden and England where one could expect the long balls and those across the face of the goal.  I watch how easy them Costa Ricans get through we defence boy.

Sancho and Cyd have to figure in that defensive mix boy...at least they could recover quick if they beat.

« on: January 23, 2006, 12:53:41 PM »
Some good comments I must say..  I agree that the PFL needs to be more high profile, attract bigger crowds and pay better wages for a system like that to work.

It would help too if we go to more commnunity based teams.  When I check it out, teams that get the most support are the teams like North Eastern (Grande), Connection (Sando / Marabella / Couva), Defence Force (Tetron / Staubles) them have they own lil community.  Petrotrin have players form all over and very little crowd pullers.  Jabloteh supposed be from San Juan, but the players again from all over, and suuport not as good as long time.  The Tobago team would pull a crowd in Tobago, because they starve for big games over dey.

I have two words for all this stuff...TEFLON DON

nothing will come of this and JW will keep on rolling unscathed.

pointman you must be over 30 and seen and heard this kinda talk alreday .... people doh realise dat you have the throne and the power behind de throne !! warner is de power behind the fifa President you tink the president even thinking of moving him !! Vote boy votes ...dat is what keeps you in power !!
When de WC start everybody go forget all dis talk ...

I agree....
The funny thing is that Jack probably already make plenty money off the whole ticketing issues.  Trinis have a shallow mind and memory when it come to things like this.  We does seek to fix weself first and see 'bout anything else after.  Later down the road JAck would throw a freeco game...get this...in honour of the patriotism to the team...or some bullshit like that and everybody crowd the stadium and big up Jack again...saying all is forgiven, just doh let it happen again.

Plenty people who could've afforded the $30,000 package rush it because they say at least that price would keep out the rift-raft and dem we see on papers climbing the fence in Sando, Arima and POS to get tickets for the Bharain game.  Man doh care about the principle of the thing....as long as we get to see the team play in peace.

If we call a boycott to all local games, until TTFF clean up they act...it would fail because man want to see the team play.  We doh exercise we rights.  We should all tear a page from Lisana book.

Football / Draft player system for PFL ???
« on: January 20, 2006, 02:02:18 PM »
There was something in the Lincoln Philip interview that sparked a thought.  This is concerning the comments about the SSFL and the PFL teams and comments where primarily two teams dominate a league.

Do you think a draft system (similiar to the NBA) from SSFL to PFL could work in T&T  ??? ??? ???

In a nutshell, the draft system in the NBA allows a ranking amongst college players, and the lowest ranked team will get the first pick for the highest ranked player.  The teams could trade as they want after the draft...sometimes even negotiated BEFORE the actual draft.  But this system basically prevents the more financially advantaged teams from swooping up the best players by offering better contracts.  It also allows for team building so that if younger players stay with a club, they and the club benefit in the turnover years.  Domination would only come if after the draft, a team could still lure the big players old or new, and have a star boy like Jordan, Kobe, Lebron, Shaq etc.....

Football / Re: FIFA blanks Liburd
« on: January 20, 2006, 07:08:28 AM »
Boy they good.

We should verify that each nation's FA can only accredit 21 reporters.

The only reason he's on FIFA's blacklist is because Jack is a VP and he put Liburd on it himself. Otherwise I doubt FIFA would care so much.

And looks like they admit Jack running things. "I have to report to him, not to you or anybody else." So obviously Camps is not in charge, don't even have to report to him, ent

Ent I tell allyuh long time now that Jack in charge.  Camps is just he patsy.

We should lobby for Camps removal...vote of no confidence....something...something...something.  It have to start with Camps, then the other patsies and dem....Warner would pull out for heself.
Them fellas in TTFF playing with we beloved Warriors.  In Africa people boycott games and cause big big administration to fall when they smell corruption.  That is a hard pill to swallow, but ah telling allyuh, things will only get worse if Jack and TTFF continue the way they going.  By God's grace if we make it to the 2nd rounds and we profile go up, match tickets in T&T for any friendly go be between $200 - $300 for uncovered....$500 - $600 for covered stands....WITHOUT ENTERTAINMENT !
Ticket or leave it !!!

Fishs, you have a point dey, but as Ato pointed out earlier, to the some it may not matter how the man speaks in the mike, but the audience he will address will be the broke audience...the audience who cyah help that man really aspire to the top of his game....NOT the audience who will enable that man to leave behind a legend and possibly clear the way for others like himself to follow.  As a professional you want people to invest in you...and marketing yourself is a big part of that.

But on top of all that....it have many eloquent writers in the forum.  Some versed in both the wriiten word...standard english and colloquial vernacular....and we have interviewers, interviewed and those in the public eye, who would definitely get a hearing from the relevant authorities.  Let's tickle the relevant sporting bodies to introduce some measure of image development for the athletes.

Jah John you made a good point, and some of it was also touched on in the tread with the Jemmot interview.

A lot has to do with the interviewer who presenting the questions and the environment at the time of the interview.

Yuh ever notice is a different response from a sportsman when yuh listen to an interview right after a race, match or game or whatever, as opposed to in a studio settings or a controlled environment ?
Sometimes the interviewer fanning away bamsee fly and mosquito while the talk going on.  And the sportsman sweating and spitting in the camera and the mike.

MOST of the professional sportsmen...and ah talking foreign now...because we doh have much in T&T...usually went to some high school or college that they could relate to.  Good grades is a big thing when you have to make the school team, if you want to get drafted to the professional ranks, so fellas had to get educated properly.  As a pro you get training in giving good interviews.  Here we place more emphasis on skills in the particular sport to make it to pro ranks, and proper education if any is a bonus.

Slang and dialect is neither here nor there.  The important thing is delivery.  The Tobagonian boxer, Manswell does talk different to Trinis, but he exudes a certain amount of confidence in his interviews that would make you want to listen.  Ato does exude the same kinda confidence in interviews....Ato does even predict future results...thing to keep the listener in tune....sometimes even generate emotions like laughter, anger or disbelief.  Whatever it is, yuh cyah leave until the talk done.

A lot of locals I heard answer everything in the first question, so when the second and third questions come, they repeating the same answer for all...and still sticking about 15 of dem "well...yuh know....aaahhhmmm".  As a matter of fact every answer does start off with "aahhhmmmm".

Ask Anil about the interview on Spalk with Burns, Brown, Stephen De Las, Bovell and Dwayne Bravo a couple weeks ago.....

As for the entertainers...is only Trinis does copy Jamaican artistes.  Trinis will copy Jamaicans (reggae slang) and Americans (hip-hop).  NOBODY else !  I never hear trinis copying dem Bajan soca artistes slang, nor the small islanders either.  Nobody else does try to copy a trini either....

de interviewer eh good at all!

dat is ah real factor too!
That interview was a waste ah time and ah feel TI do ah lot ah editing cause the amount ah times ah hear Hardest say "yuh know" ah was wondering if that was all he did know. Ah lorse count.

He eh say nuttin except he in the gym and stupidness like that....Dwarika ditto.

I actually was feeling sorry fuh the fella cause he still sound like he don't have ah firm plan of what he want his future to be except making the National Team.

If he make that Team that would be just as great as TNT making the World Cup....he have real serious odds against him.

I wish him well though.

Ah find like a lot of these local players (sportsmen on de whole) cyah talk in an interview...once yuh put a mike or camera in front dey face, something does change dem.  The foreign players does get coaching to make interviews...especially for after game press conferences.

If the interviewer don't know how to encourage rapport, then the public doh learn nothing from the interview,

But after reading capodetutticapi post...ah wondering if he should even be invited to the sweat.  It might have too much violence.

I agree that a suspension and shame would each him to refrain from such nefarious perniciouness...

1555
I heard that a couple people investigating whether what Jack and TTFF do was illegal.  There are serious codes of conduct that NGO's and the likes MUST adhere to...particularly when supported by the Gov't.
TTFF as like all other national sporting bodies does receive part funding from the Gov't.  A lot will depend on the actual contracts that were signed between Jack and TTFF...and whether there is evidence of abuse of the procedures for ITB's (Intention To Bid).  The leaders in the business community might not want to take up the issue too much, because is only dem self who could afford the tickets anyway...just to keep away the plebs like we...

TriniInfinite, I agree with your comments.

Cyd really come a long way since that Costa Rica game.  The only thing I have to add is that he really have to temper the agression when it matters.  There will be some crafty forwards in the WC who might use that to their own advantage, and we could end up playing with ten men.  Ah feel the experience overseas will only improve on the quality.

I saw a documentary a long time ago, where the commentator was talking about the England cricket team, back in the early days when you would actually get a cap with the emblem, for every time you represented the team.  The term moved to other sports and then the Aussies picked it up and then the rest of the world...except off course the Americans, who hardly talk about 'caps'.

My memory of the details sketchy though, but it shouldn't be too hard to get the facts.
