Wenger rues 'horrendous' results

Arsene Wenger was left disappointed by Champions League exit
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger reflected on an "horrendous" spell after they were dumped out the Champions League by PSV Eindhoven at The Emirates

Defender Alex - on loan from Chelsea - gave Arsenal the lead with an own goal, but then headed a late leveller to send PSV through 2-1 on aggregate.

He said: "There are a lot of positives but the two weeks have been horrendous.

"We can only think we played the game we wanted to play but we didn't take our chances. It's cruel."

I think Chelsea will be very happy Alex scored here

And the irony of PSV hero Alex's links with Chelsea did not escape the beaten Wenger.

The 24-year-old was bought in a joint agreement between PSV and Chelsea in 2004 with the contract stipulating he spend two seasons in Holland before moving to Stamford Bridge.

But Alex's failure to play for Brazil has frustrated the former Santos defender's efforts to switch to the Premiership on work permit grounds.

Wenger said: "Alex won PSV the tie alone, which is only a bit of an exaggeration.

"He kept their defence very tight and saved them every time. He made the difference at set-pieces and dominated our players in the air easily.

"Chelsea have the money to buy the best players - that's not new information.

"I don't know the rules and I don't think he's the only player Chelsea own like that."

He added: "I don't feel we failed in the Carling Cup. We're out of the FA Cup and that was a big disappointment, but is minor compared to this.

"Now we have to secure a place in the Champions League because we have a responsibility to finish as high as we can and try to overtake Liverpool.

"We lacked a bit of sharpness and of course we lacked a bit of quality in the final third."

PSV coach Ronald Koeman - who sent Liverpool and Manchester United crashing out of the Champions League last season, was elated and paid tribute to the performance of Alex.

He said: "He's one of the best central defenders there is and it's incredible he plays for a team like PSV.

"He's Chelsea's player and PSV rent him from Chelsea because he's still not allowed to play in England.

"We're proud he plays for us but know it won't be for much longer.

"He can play against Chelsea in the next round because he's at PSV until the end of the season.

"After that we'll talk to Chelsea about his situation. It was an agreement with Chelsea that he stays with us for the season.

"I think Chelsea will be very happy Alex scored tonight."

Arsenal v PSV Eindhoven: Alex sends Gunners out

Arsenal's hopes of silverware were ended for another season as PSV Eindhoven secured a draw at Emirates Stadium to progress into the last eight of the Champions League.

Manager Arsene Wenger had warned his side needed to tighten up at set-pieces, but that again proved to be their Achilles heel this evening as defender Alex - who had earlier scored an own goal to level the tie - powered in a bullet header with just seven minutes to go to seal the Gunners' fate.

Even the introduction of talisman and captain Thierry Henry for the final 25 minutes was not enough to see last season's beaten finalists through.

While third place in the Barclays Premiership remains very much a realistic goal for Wenger's men, tonight's result will leave the club without a trophy for the second season running.

Following a cagey opening, the first chance of the match came on eight minutes.

Kolo Toure - currently serving a domestic ban - broke down the right, and brushed past fellow Ivory Coast international Arouna Kone before cutting back into the box.

However, with team-mates queuing up, the defender could only slice his shot horribly wide of the near post.

There was an early warning for the Gunners when Peru striker Jefferson Farfan held off the attentions of stand-in centre-back Gilberto on the right of the Arsenal box before drilling a low strike into the side netting.

At the other end, Cesc Fabregas' chip into the area almost picked out Emmanuel Adebayor - but the beanpole Togo striker, also currently suspended for domestic games, was just beaten to the loose ball by keeper Gomes.

Toure, playing a right-back, was getting forwards at every opportunity.

On 22 minutes, his fierce angled drive was beaten away by the PSV keeper.

Arsenal were pressing now, and a neat interchange of passes saw Adebayor dash to the goal-line.

Fabregas' shot from the cut-back was blocked - and Julio Baptista volleyed just over.

Despite all of Arsenal's dominance, the home side were unable to find a telling pass.

As the half-hour mark passed, PSV captain Phillip Cocu sent a free header wide when picked out in the centre by Edison Mendez.

With five minutes left of the first half, the visitors felt they had a claim for a penalty.

Gilberto struggled to clear a backpass and only managed to fall over before Farfan then followed him on to the turf in a tangle of legs.

Luxembourg referee Alain Hamer, though, was having none of it and waved play on.

Wenger knew he had just 45 minutes to keep alive the dream of a second successive Champions League final appearance.

His half-time team-talk looked to have had the desired affect as it was a bright start by the hosts.

Baptista and Sun Xiang tussled on the edge of the penalty area, and the Brazilian took a tumble - but again the referee was unmoved.

Arsenal pulled themselves back into the tie on 58 minutes following a period of sustained pressure.

A corner from the left was flicked on at the near post by Adebayor into the six-yard box where Alex, facing his own goal, diverted the ball into the net.

The Gunners almost snatched the overall lead in the tie when Fabregas' long ball up field was completely missed by Carlos Salcido and Adebayor raced clear - but Gomes was out quickly to make a smart save.

Fabregas then fired over from 12 yards, before at the other end Mendez shot wide following good work down the PSV right.

With 25 minutes left, Wenger turned to Henry, who replaced Baptista.

It needed a flying save from Gomes to keep out a curled free-kick from the Arsenal captain as the home side continued to press for a winner in normal time.

Disaster struck, however, with seven minutes to go.

A needless free-kick conceded out on the left touchline by Alexander Hleb was whipped into the area by Mendez.

Alex got up above everyone to bullet a header into the far corner to send PSV into the quarter-finals and Arsenal crashing out.

Football / Wenger: "Henry deserved Award"

Wenger: Henry deserved award, not Cannavaro

Arsene Wenger has insisted it was a 'mistake' not to name Arsenal captain Thierry Henry as European Player of the Year - and that the World Cup was 'lowest level' of football.

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro took the prestigious Ballon D'Or - awarded by France Football magazine - ahead of countryman and Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, both of whom tasted success in Germany this summer.

France striker Henry, 29, meanwhile, was third - despite having helped Arsenal reach their first European Cup final and also reaching the World Cup final for a second time with Les Blues.

For Wenger, the decision was unjust.

'It is a mistake,' declared the Arsenal manager.

'It shows that the people who vote look only at the World Cup, which when you speak about elite football, in my opinion, is the lowest level in football that you can see at the moment.

'They make their decision on that.'

Wenger continued: 'If you see Italy playing against Togo or South Korea you cannot say that Cannavaro has a good game or even Thierry Henry has a good game, that he is the best player in the world - look at the players he plays against.

'To be consistent in a big championship like in England or in the Champions League for me would be much more appropriate than three weeks in the World Cup

Football / Barca sign Thuram and Zambrotta
« on: July 20, 2006, 10:04:51 PM »
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/europe/5201744.stm

Barcelona have won the race to capture Juventus defenders Lilian Thuram and Gianluca Zambrotta following the Italian club's relegation to Serie B.
Thuram, 34, has signed a two-year deal, while the 29-year-old Zambrotta has put pen to paper on a four-year contract.

Juventus were relegated and will start next season with a 30-point penalty after the match-fixing scandal which rocked Italian football.

Spanish media reports suggest Barca have paid a combined fee of £13m.

The pair will join their new team-mates on Barca's tour of Mexico and the USA.

France's Thuram and Italy's Zambrotta both enjoyed outstanding tournaments in the World Cup, facing each other in the final.

Thuram, who has also had spells with Monaco and Parma, was part of the France squad which won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

He won 121 caps for France before calling an end to his international career after his country's defeat to Italy on penalties in the final.

Meanwhile, Zambrotta - who can also play full-back on either flank - spent two seasons with Bari before moving to Juventus in 1999. He has 58 caps for Italy.

Thuram's spokesman told BBC Sport earlier this week that the veteran defender had been in heavy demand from top clubs throughout Europe.

"Clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Arsenal and Chelsea have been asking about Lilian," he said.

Many star players are expected to leave Juventus, Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina in the wake of Italy's match-fixing scandal.

Juventus lost Italy's World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro and Brazil midfielder Emerson to Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The 'It's Friday!' Gossip

Yeah, whatever...

EXPECT CHELSEA TO SIGN BOTH COLE AND CARLOS
The Sun are making a great play out of the news that Ashley Cole hasn't invited Arsene Wenger to his wedding. Is it really so remarkable that a married-man-to-be doesn't want his boss at his wedding? (Hey! - Ed) Wenger wouldn't have been able to attend anyway. Arsenal kick off their pre-season preparations on Saturday with a friendly at Barnet.

More significant are the claims that Cole still blames Arsenal for the tapping-up furore with Chelsea. According to The Sun, Cole, 25, is also preparing to unleash criticism of Arsenal over the Chelsea tap-up scandal in his forthcoming book. It seems certain to speed his exit from the Champions League runners-up, who are furious at the player's attack.

News that Roman Abramovich is pulling the strings behind Roberto Carlos' imminent move to Chelsea would, at first glance, appear to be bad news for Cole. The Independent claims that Abramovich is 'the driving force behind the deal' and 'is taking an increased role in the club's dealings and is determined that they win the Champions' League next season as well as retaining the Premiership title. And that they do so with a sprinkling of star names.

As such, Carlos has been offered a three-year deal worth £88,000-a-week. But even if Carlos arrives at Stamford Bridge, don't rule out Cole following him close behind. The ageing Brazilian can't be expected to play in every game and Chelsea are set to make room for two new left-backs by dumping Asier del Horno on Valencia.

RUUD GETS REAL

Ruud van Nistelrooy is closing in on a transfer to Real Madrid. Man Utd's out-of-favour striker, wanted by both Newcastle and Bayern Munich, has 'a clear preference to join Real', according to The Times. The paper believes that 'Sir Alex Ferguson will today break his silence on the Cristiano Ronaldo affair, echoing the view of Carlos Queiroz, his assistant, that the Portugal winger remains "a part of the family" at Manchester United'.

The same cannot be said of Ruud, however. His transfer is to Real 'is progressing far quicker than that pursued by his restless team-mate', although Madrid may require as much as £12m to sign the Dutch forward. Somewhat optimistically, both Fergie and Queiroz are determined to hang on to Ronaldo, even though the Portuguese winger is equally determined to move to Madrid.

The Times claims that 'he is said to be "genuinely very scared" of the hostility that may await him on his return to England. His Spanish girlfriend, in particular, is urging him to do everything possible to move to Madrid.

'RICHARDS FOR SPURS

Tottenham 'have made an ambitious £5million bid for Manchester City's brilliant young defender Micah Richards', according to The Daily Mirror. 'Spurs football director Damien Comolli made the formal approach yesterday and City chairman John Wardle will now have to decide whether to accept the huge bid or try to keep hold of the young diamond,' the papers say.

F365 has a faint suspicion that the Mirror believes that Richards is a good prospect. Spurs have endured a difficult summer so far, with bids for Pascal Chimbonda and Curtis Davies rejected, although they have brought in star quality in the form of Didier Zokora and Dimitar Berbatov.

POMPEY'S LATEST DUO
Portsmouth have been linked with more players than Chelsea this summer no, really, they have, and the latest duo said to be on their way to the south coast are Ryan Nelsen and Portugal midfielder Manuel Fernandes. By all accounts, Pompey have made a £4m bid for the Blackburn centre-half, who has an unheralded star last season.

The Daily Mirror says that 'The New Zealand defender - a key part of Mark Hughes's side - wants to speak to Pompey where he could double his current £650,000-a-year salary. 'The Daily Telegraph reports that 'Fernandes is on the verge of an £8 million move to Portsmouth, according to Portuguese radio. However, The Times believes that Pompey will have to raise their offer to £10m because Benfica have to pay half of any transfer fee to an investment fund that owns 50 per cent of the midfield player's sporting rights.

BOLTON SET TO WASTE MONEY

No wonder Dietmar Hamann had second thoughts about joining Bolton. The Times and Guardian both agree that Bolton are pursuing Djimi Traoré. £1.5m would reportedly be sufficient to persuade Liverpool to sell the defender. F365 would be reticent about offering £1.50. Bolton are also said to be interested in Nicolas Anelka, another Pompey target, and Marseille defender Abdoulaye Méité.

DIARRA BACK ON THE AGENDA

Mahamadou Diarra has opened the possibility of a move to Man Utd by announcing "At the moment I'm open to all offers." The 25-year-old has also been linked with Arsenal, although The Times reports that Real Madrid have expressed an interest in the Lyons midfielder. Jeez, from the sounds of things, Real Madrid are currently interested in any footballer with two legs.

AND THE REST

Juventus say they will not be selling players on the cheap even if they are sent down, and will aim to let their star players out on loan deals while they reclaim their place in Serie A...Espanyol claim they have agreed a £750,000 fee for Sunderland favourite Julio Arca...Fat Sam is chasing Iranian World Cup 'star' Andranik Teymourian...Charlton want to bring in Australian Scott Chipperfield...Steve sidwell will walk out of Reading for nothing next summer if he does not get the transfer he wants this year...

World Cup Soca

Plenty of sides would have swapped their qualifying schedule for Trinidad and Tobago's.

The 'Soca Warriors' lost seven games on their way to fourth place in the CONCACAF region, and then played off against mighty Bahrain for a place in the finals.

Israel and Morocco, both of whom went unbeaten but failed to qualify, might reflect on the injustice of it all, but most neutrals will be delighted to see the Caribbeans at their first World Cup finals.

As shaky as they might have been at times, the team's achievement is remarkable for a country of just a million people that until recently was dominated by a different ball game altogether.

Cricketing heroes such as Brian Lara and Ian Bishop have been replaced by Dwight Yorke, Stern John and Dennis Lawrence, and the 'Soca Warriors' will be the only topic of conversation this summer on these two small islands off the northern coast of Venezuela.

Qualification has brought special redemption for Yorke and fellow veteran Russell Latapy. As youngsters, the two came a minute away from reaching Italia '90.

Trinidad and Tobago needed just a draw from their final qualifying game against the USA, but had their hearts broken by a last-ditch winner that sent the Americans to the World Cup. Sixteen years later they have finally secured a place on the biggest stage of all.

This campaign certainly brought a its fair share of ups and downs with those seven defeats over the course of two group stages coming against Mexico (three times), the USA (twice), Costa Rica and even Guatemala.

After a 1-1 draw at home in the playoff first leg, the unlikely figure of Wrexham defender Lawrence headed them into the finals with the only goal of the return fixture, clinching a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Team captain Yorke won the Australian title with Sydney FC in March, and has been in England since then, keeping his fitness up at his old club Manchester United.

He might have been training with Wayne Rooney, but the 34-year-old is unlikely to play like him, unless he has broken into Rooney's right foot and stolen his kryptonite (now there's a conspiracy theory).

That said, he still sees the game well and will play a pivotal 'quarterback' position, distributing the ball from midfield.

As a man whose eye for the ladies created as many headlines as his eye for goal, he might not seem an obvious skipper, but Yorke has taken on the responsibility with seriousness and dedication, and was virtually ever-present during qualifiers.

Latapy is even longer in the tooth and, at 38, could be the oldest outfield player at the tournament.

He had actually quit international football before Yorke persuaded him to come out of retirement and rejuvenate an ailing campaign. Last year he was voted the Scottish First Division's player of the season, but it remains to be seen whether such an accolade necessarily guarantees success against world-class opponents.

With 15 of the 23 squad members based in Britain, you might think that England will know their adversaries inside-out on June 15th.

However, while the English stars represent Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, the Caribbeans ply their trade at footballing outposts such as Port Vale, Wrexham, and St. Johnstone. As England basked in the Algarve sun at their pre-tournament training camp, T & T shivered their way through a rainy week in Chester.

Only West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop plays regularly in the Premiership, and he featured only fleetingly on the road to Germany.

Coach Leo Beenhakker must decide whether to keep faith with qualifying stalwart Kelvin Jack or make the unsentimental but probably sensible switch to Hislop who, at 37, is playing some of the best football of his career.

Bustling striker Stern John played in the Premiership for Birmingham City, but was never prolific. However, he plundered 12 goals in qualifying, more than anyone in the world except Mexico's Jared Borgetti.

Tearing Central American minnows to pieces is no guarantee that you will do the same to Sweden or England, but John's contribution will be crucial.

Meanwhile, the versatile Kenwyne Jones will be familiar with Southampton team-mate Alexander Östlund of Sweden, and can renew acquaintances with England's former Saints Peter Crouch and Theo Walcott.

Among the other players to watch include attacking midfielder Chris Birchall, who should be easy to spot as he is the squad's only white player.

The Port Vale man is Staffordshire born and bred, but qualifies because his mother was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

He made his international debut in May last year after being wooed (in a football sense only) by Dennis Lawrence.

Midfielder Carlos Edwards is another important creative influence. Dwight Yorke has touted him for possible greatness, although considering he is 27 and still playing for Luton Town this seems unlikely.

Leo Beenhakker is a beneficiary of the 'hire a Dutchman' policy that has swept international football since Guus Hiddink took South Korea to the semi-finals in 2002.

He certainly boasts enough experience, having won six league titles across the continent with Real Madrid, Ajax and Feyenoord. He also led the Netherlands at Italia '90 and - perhaps most encouragingly of all for Trinidad and Tobago - took the similarly unfancied Saudi Arabians to the second round of USA '94.

The spring friendly campaign has brought some positive results, but victories against the Grenada Olympic Team, Iceland and Honduras will count for little when it comes to facing the cream of world football.

Even Peru seemed to have the measure of them in Port of Spain earlier in May, though a string of Jack saves and a superb Jones free-kick salvaged a 1-1 draw.

However, the heroics did little to placate Beenhakker, who was harshly critical of his team after the match.

The feisty 63-year-old's no-nonsense approach will help to focus a squad whose captain has already admitted he does not expect to get out of the group stage. Yorke's point of view might sound like common sense, but such a perspective could lead to meek surrender.

Only by actively targeting wins can they produce their best form, and they have every chance of frustrating a Paraguay team whose leading strikers are short of full fitness, or even England, whose 1-0 embarrassment against Northern Ireland illustrates the difficulties they encounter in breaking down supposedly lesser sides.

The famous victory against Bahrain last November sparked wild celebrations, and the carnival atmosphere is certain to continue as long as Trinidad and Tobago are in the tournament.

Fellow Caribbean nation Jamaica shocked Japan in their sole appearance in 1998, and with the wily Beenhakker in charge the Soca Warriors could yet supply some giantkilling feats of their own.

Veron: Adriano Not That Good

http://goal.com/en-us/articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=59267

Juan Sebastian Veron has launched a fierce attack on Inter team-mate Adriano, suggesting the Brazilian is overrated.

"If he played the way he talks, then Inter would already have won the Scudetto," he told a South American newspaper.

"Adriano feels himself on a pedestal that does not belong to him, seeing as he’s neither Ronaldo nor Ronaldinho. I really hope he gets to play against Argentina in the World Cup."

The pair are known not to be the best of friends, and reportedly came to blows in the half-time break of the club’s Champions League quarter final defeat to Villarreal last season.

Feyenoord striker Kalou set to sign for Chelsea

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=369195&cc=5901

AMSTERDAM, May 27 (Reuters) - Feyenoord striker Salomon Kalou is holding talks with Chelsea, the Dutch news agency ANP reported on Saturday.

'Anticipating the possible departure, we have given Salomon an authorisation to talk with Chelsea,' Feyenoord marketing director Chris Woerts told ANP.

'We have been in talks with this club over Kalou for some time. It's going in the right direction but he still hasn't reached an agreement yet ... Chelsea sees in Kalou an exceptional talent.'

The Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf said 20-year-old Kalou, who is the younger brother of Ivory Coast captain Bonaventure Kalou, had been in England on Friday to wrap up the deal.

'The player reached a principle agreement with the club,' the paper said without quoting a source. 'The expectations are that today or tomorrow the clubs will agree on a four or five-year contract.'

Dutch media have previously reported that Valencia and Chelsea have shown a strong interest in the striker.

Earlier this week, Kalou told the Dutch weekly magazine Sportweek he did not expect to play in the Netherlands much longer as he wanted to move on with his career. He has said he prefers a transfer to England or Spain.

Kalou also told Sportweek he had given up his quest for Dutch citizenship and wanted to play for the Ivory Coast after the World Cup finals.

Supported by Netherlands coach Marco van Basten and the country's former playmaker Johan Cruyff, Kalou applied for Dutch citizenship but was denied by Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk.

She told parliament in March that Kalou did not fulfil the criteria for fast-track citizenship and would have to retake a Dutch language and culture test.

Earlier this month, a civil court in Rotterdam rejected Kalou's appeal against Verdonk's decision.

Panday found guilty on three counts

Two years in prison with hard labour

http://www.guardian.co.tt/news5.html

BY INDARJIT SEURAJ

Former prime minister Basdeo Panday was today sentenced to serve six years’ imprisonment with hard labour, after he was found guilty on three counts of failing to declare his London bank account.

However, the Opposition leader will only serve two years as the sentences are to run concurrently.

The ruling was handed down by Chief Magistrate Sherman McNicolls who also imposed a $20,000 fine on each count.

panday was also ordered to forfeit a total of £159,600.35, the total accumulated year-end balances in the London account for the three years for which he was charged.

In default of these fines, McNicolls said, the Opposition leader will face another three years with hard labour.

The decision brought shock to the capacity-filled Port-of-Spain Eighth Magistrates courtroom, and even tears to some of the many UNC supporters.

Lead defence attorney Desmond Allum, SC’s, application for bail was denied after he gave oral notice of their intention to appeal the decision.

The sentence was handed down to the former trade union leader, despite Allum’s plea in mitigation.

Allum asked that community service be considered as an alternative to prison incarceration.

He said the matter was one of failure to declare his assets, and asked that McNicolls bear in mind that it was not a corruption charge. Allum added that the former prime minister was “a person of impeccable character” and dedicated his life to the betterment of society.

He had earlier described as “reprehensible,” last week’s raid on the home of CL Financial executive chairman Lawrence Duprey.

Allum called for the matter to be stayed and those involved referred to the Director of Public Prosecution and committed to the High Court for contempt of court.

He chided the manner in which it was carried out where media personnel were there to publicise the raid.

He also condemned the statements by Anti-Corruption Investigation Bureau head Joseph Edwards who said the raid was geared at getting information to substantiate the testimony given by Duprey or to negate it.

In response, lead prosecutor British Queen’s Counsel Sir Timothy Cassel said the matter was not before a jury and the raid, although he described it as “most regrettable,” he said the public has confidence in McNicolls’ ruling.

Before ruling, McNicolls said, “I wish to put on record this: the people of Trinidad and Tobago should know that my mind is free from all sorts of influences because of this immense coverage given by the media in this matter and that they had no bearing whatever in the decision I have arrived at.

“The maxim ‘justice is blind’ and there is a rule of law for everyone regardless of personality is still alive and well in our society today.”

Decision:

Guilty on all three counts of failing to declare a London Bank account to the Integrity Commission for the years 1997, 1998 and 1999, respectively, contrary to Section 27 (1)(b) of the Integrity in Public Life Act 1987.

Sentence:

Two years’ imprisonment with hard labour on each of the three counts.

The sentences are to run concurrently.

A fine of $20,000 on each count.

He is to forfeit the equivalent of £159,600.35, the total accumulated year-end balances in the account for the three years charged.

In default of these payments, he will serve a further three years’ imprisonment with hard labour.

Ballack 'agrees on Chelsea deal'

Ballack seems set to join Chelsea this summer
Bayern Munich midfielder Michael Ballack has agreed a four-year deal with Chelsea, according to media reports in Germany.
The German public broadcaster ZDF said all that was left was for Ballack, 29, and Chelsea to sign the contract.

"According to information from ZDF, Michael Ballack and the English champions have agreed a four-year contract," the broadcaster said.

"The captain of Germany and the London club must only sign the contract now."

There has been no official confirmation from either Chelsea or Bayern.

Ballack, who is out of contract at Bayern this summer, is refusing to sign a new deal with the Bundesliga giants and has admitted being in "serious negotiations" with the Stamford Bridge club.

Yorke Confirms Second Sydney Season

Dwight Yorke has confirmed that he will be back in Sydney for a second season with the A-League champions though his priorities currently lie elsewhere.

"Dwight will definitely be back in Sydney after the World Cup," the player’s agent Simon Bayliff said. "He loves Sydney , absolutely loves it. As soon as the World Cup is over he will be back as fresh as a spring chicken for the start of the next season. He is all good to go."

There had been fears that the 34 year-old would be offloaded by the club in an attempt to cut costs and while the issue was seemingly resolved recently, it is good news for the fans that the player is resolved to help the team defend its title.

The agent went on to dismiss rumours that the Trinidad and Tobago captain will go on loan in order to stay fit for the Soca Warriors’ first-ever World Cup.

"Dwight is not going out on loan to anyone and he joins up with the Trinidad team in a few weeks anyway. He is training with Manchester United and has been for four weeks. Then he is going to the World Cup."

With Yorke named in the squad he could be the only A-League representative on the global stage as it is unlikely that Australia ’s coach, Guus Hiddink will name any domestic players in the Socceroo roster.

Football / Tactical Pre-Analysis of Chelsea vs Barca

Champions League: Chelsea v. Barcelona - A Tactical Analysis

It is a game between two sides who have everything to prove, as anything but winning the Champions League will now be par for the course. With both coaches trying to compensate for their natural tendencies, there is also the possibility of a few surprise selections.

If pushed for one sentence, I would have to say the following: Chelsea will be concerned about Barcelona's fluid passing game splitting them open, while the Catalans will be worrying about the pace and precision of the Blues on the break.

A closer look, however, reveals a plethora of tactical issues which will govern selection, and the respective team philosophies. Let us look at them, zone by zone.

The Chelsea Midfield

Makelele and Lampard are sure starters, despite the Frenchman's minor knock. Essien would have accompanied them, but his suspension resulted in the winter purchase of Maniche.

With the Portuguese international a near certainty to accompany the duo, one would wonder what the fuss is all about! The fact of the matter is, Chelsea are playing at home, and are expected to win.

Mourinho will also be thinking that the world will be watching, waiting to claim that he bored them to death. With that, and the home advantage in mind, it is not entirely inconceivable to imagine a start for Gudjohnsen alongside Lampard.

Providing more support to this conjecture, is the fact that this was exactly what Mourinho did last year at Stamford Bridge. Agreed, it was the second leg, and Chelsea needed to win, but then, surely they need to win their home leg again.

Personally, I would prefer to see Gudjohnsen start, as it could catch Rijkaard off guard. It would also, most certainly throw the match wide open, and that is exactly why, making the conjecture is, at best, playing devil's advocate. I just don't see Mourinho opening it up for Barcelona.

With Lampard frequently barging into the opposition box, it does, after all, make sense to give Makelele some cover. Besides, Maniche and Mourinho should also know a thing or two about Deco. So Makelele, Maniche, and Lampard, it will be, barring a miracle.

The Barcelona Midfield

Thanks to Xavi's absence, there is a huge debate about who should accompany Deco and Edmilson in the middle. Iniesta has a creative spark, but but with him, Barcelona lose presence (literally) in the middle of the pitch. Van Bommel is better for a more direct game, but doesn't have sufficient defensive discipline either.

Either way, Edmilson will be left alone to deal with Lampard, and anyone else who pushes up. If he sticks to Lampard, he will be dragged out of position, leaving a hole in the centre, and if he tries to defend his position, Lampard will find too much space for comfort, elsewhere.

In the light of this, if I were to second guess Rijkaard, I would go with the last moment selection of a dark horse: Thiago Motta. In fact, the more I think, the more it convinces me as the only logical solution,.

One of Motta and Edmilson would then devote their attention to Lampard, while the other would defend the centre of the pitch. The advantages do not end there. It also offers a plan B, should Mourinho be courageous enough to start with Gudjohnsen in a deep role alongside Lampard. He could help mark Terry during dead ball situations, and last, but not the least, free up Deco to focus on galvanizing the attack.

The Barcelona Attack

Eto'o will start up front, with Ronaldinho and Messi offering width, but only for starters. Both prefer to cut inside and have a crack on goal, or alternatively, sell a few dummies, drag defenders out of position, and set someone else up. Guily and Larsson offer options when a more direct game is required, but are unlikely to be called upon in this leg.

Eto'o is much more than a finisher in Rijkaard's scheme of things, though. He can often be caught deep in the midfield, or on either touchline. Ronaldinho or Messi then move into the centre, with the full-backs offering the extra width.

Not going for broke, will be something they will constantly have to remind themselves, though, if they don't want a repeat of last year.

The Chelsea Attack

Robben, Cole and Drogba are Mourinho's first choice, and line up just like Barca. That is complicated in this instance, by Drogba's poor finishing. More than anything, Mourinho needs his team to be clinical on ther counter, which in turn could prompt him to go for the more efficient Crespo.

It will be a tough choice, given Drogba's ability to win long balls, and make his presence felt even while defending (ask Hyypia). But the kind of football Chelsea are likely to play points towards the Argentinean getting the nod. Mourinho would love long balls, but would rather punish Barcelona clinically on the break.

Unlike Eto'o, Crespo plays the traditional front man, and variety here comes in the form of Cole and Robben swapping flanks once in a while. Both are deadly on the run, and especially in one-on-one situations.

The Chelsea Defense

With Terry, Carvalho and Ferreira near certainties, the only choice for Mourinho is between Gallas and Del Horno for the left back spot. Once again, a lot of the way Chelsea approach this match depends on this choice. Del Horno will be a bigger threat in the Barca box, especially in dead-ball situations, but might struggle against Messi.

That means Mourinho will be inclined to let Gallas line-up, provided he is fit, thus sending out his four best defenders onto the pitch. The opportunity to punish Barcelona on the flanks, however, could sound too tempting. The match will definitely be better for it.

Terry will stick to Eto'o, and Ferreira to Ronaldinho, with Carvalho cleaning up.

The Barcelona Defence

Marquez and Puyol look set in the centre, with skipper marking Crespo/Drogba, and Mexican cleaning up. But that's where the intersting bit begins. Rijkaard has a couple of very tricky decision to make, regarding whom to start on the flanks.

To understand why, try answering this. What do you do when you want to defend against wide players who like to break at great pace? Do you go with the supposedly better defenders, or the faster ones?

The better but slower ones have no chance of keeping up once the opponents get by, while the faster ones end up being too Brazilian for Rijkaard. With the way he has been focusing on not making errors, all the signs point towards the relatively solid Oleguer and Gio getting the nod.

My personal belief, however, is that sending Belletti and Sylvinho onto the pitch, but forbidding them from venturing forward could work better. If they could just forget about attacking for one night, and stick with Cole and Robben, the duo might just be silenced.

An Open Game

All in all, the game will be a lot more open than one would expect, with both sides creating danger through their front men. But in the end, it is going to come down to how ruthless Chelsea can be on the break. Period.

Chelsea: 4-3-3. Cech – Ferreira, Carvalho, Terry, Del Horno/Gallas – Lampard, Makelele, Maniche/Gudjohnsen – Cole, Crespo/Drogba, Robben/Duff.

Barcelona: 4-3-3. Valdes – Oleguer/Belletti, Marquez, Puyol, Gio/Sylvinho – Edmilson, Deco, Motta – Messi, Eto'o, Ronaldinho.

Nowak in Racist Allegation

D.C. United head coach Peter Nowak has landed himself in hot water after an alleged racist remark following a pre-season match with Real Salt Lake down in Florida on Friday.

Nowak, who is known for his fiery temper on the pitch, was upset by the play of Real Salt Lake trialist Atiba Harris during his side's testy 4-1 defeat at the hands of Real.

With regard to Harris, Nowak, who hails from Poland, allegedly told Real head coach John Ellinger, "Send him back to Africa."
Harris hails from the Caribbean nation of St. Kitts & Nevis.

Ellinger all but confirmed Nowak's remarks during an interview on a Utah sports radio show called "Hardball."

"It's hard to comment publicy about it, but Peter made some inappropriate remarks," said Ellinger.

When asked to confirm Nowak's exact words, Ellinger replied to the host, "You're in the ballpark."

United officials have been unavailable for comment to this point.

Nowak made international headlines in October thanks to the gifted, yet precocious teenage star on his roster, Freddy Adu. The 16-year-old, who was born in Ghana, complained about his lack of playing time under Nowak.

That incident is sure to come back into the fore once again as Nowak, D.C. United, and MLS prepare to deal with this latest public relations debacle.

Earlier in the week it was announced that Houston 1836, the new name for the MLS club moved from San Jose during the off-season, will drop the "1836" and replace it with something else after upsetting the local Mexican-American community.

Real Madrid overtakes Manchester United

LONDON (AP) - Real Madrid has supplanted Manchester United as the world's richest soccer club.

Madrid overtook the Red Devils for the first time at the top of the "Football Money League," an independent report released by accountancy firm Deloitte on Thursday.

United had been ranked the world's richest club since the report began nine seasons ago. Deloitte says it only uses revenue as its ranking and not the wealth of individual club owners.

Real Madrid increased its revenue by 17 percent to €275.7 million (US$328 million) for the 2004-05 season despite going a second straight year without a major trophy. United earned €246.4 million (US$293 million) in the same period.

AC Milan was third with €234 million (US$279 million), followed by Italian champion Juventus with €229.4 million (US$273 million) and English champion Chelsea with €220.8 million (US$263 million).

"The mainstay of Real's revenue growth is not match-day revenues, as we have seen in many of the UK clubs, or broadcasting revenue, as we have seen - and continue to see - in Italy, but strong progress in realizing their commercial potential," the report said.

Madrid's revenue doubled in four years despite increasingly poor performances. It was second in last year's Spanish league and was eliminated from the Champions League at the first knockout stage.

Commercial revenue including sponsorship, merchandising and licensing contributed 45 percent of Madrid's total income. Madrid made €51.8 million (US$62 million) more in commercial revenue than Manchester United and €62 million (US$74 million) more than FC Barcelona.

"Recruiting world class 'galactico' players has not necessarily delivered the anticipated on-pitch results, but their presence has facilitated a transformation in the club's financial performance," the report said.

Manchester United's revenue fell because of a reduction in broadcast income, partly because of its exit from the Champions League at the first knockout round. However, Deloitte said United was one of "the foremost brands in the industry and are still clearly the most profitable club in terms of day to day operations."

Three clubs dropped out of last year's top 20 - Marseille, Aston Villa and Rangers - and were replaced by Everton, Lyon and Valencia. Only 13 clubs have appeared in all nine editions of the report: Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Inter, Juventus, Lazio, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester United, AC Milan, AS Roma, Newcastle and Tottenham.

Deloitte don't consider a club's expenditure or what someone might pay to buy or invest in a club, an example being Chelsea under billionaire owner Roman Abramovich. The revenue is divided into match-day, broadcast and commercial sources.

Football / Furious Mido hits out at Egypt 'amateurs'

Furious Mido hits out at Egypt 'amateurs'

Tottenham striker Mido has branded Egypt's coach, team and football association 'amateurs'.

Mido will miss Egypt's African Nations Cup final against Ivory Coast tomorrow having been banned for six months by his country's FA because of a touchline row with coach Hassan Shehata.

But the 22-year-old does not regret starting the rumpus, sparked when he was substituted 11 minutes from the end of Tuesday's semi-final win over Senegal.

'In Egypt they are amateurs. The manager is an amateur, the team are amateurs, the association are amateurs,' Mido told the Daily Express.

'They think they know everything. People can call me an arrogant Premiership player. The fact is that I am a Premiership player and they are amateurs.

'I have not spoken to Shehata since the incident. I don't care about him. He is a local guy. Before he was in charge of the national team, he managed a second division side.

'I want to play for Egypt again, of course. But I don't regret what I did.

'I was disappointed by the decision to ban me. I don't know why they took it. If they win tomorrow now they can say they took a good disciplinary decision. They will be heroes.

'But if they lose it will be because of Mido, and the trouble he caused. That's how things go.'
