D'Alessandro's move could be made permanent
Portsmouth have signed Argentina international midfielder Andres D'Alessandro on loan from Wolfsburg.
The 24-year-old, who was part of Argentina's gold medal-winning team in the 2004 Olympics, has scored 11 goals in 53 appearances for Wolfsburg.

Manager Harry Redknapp told the club website: "The boy is a really influential playmaker and you can't have too many of those.

"This is a massive signing for the club and I am delighted."

D'Alessandro is Redknapp's ninth signing of the January transfer window.

Redknapp added: "We have got together some players who can have a huge influence on matches, and this lad is one of them."

D'Alessandro moved to the Bundesliga from River Plate for £6.2m in July, 2003.

He has played consistently well for Wolfsburg but reports in Germany suggsted the player had been keen for a change.

Wolfsburg coach Klaus Augenthaler left him out of the squad for Saturday's 3-2 defeat by Borussia Dortmund.

"I'm sure this agreement is a fair solution for the clubs involved and for the player," Wolfsburg manager Klaus Allofs said in a statement.

Real Lining Up Swoop for Ibrahimovic

Real Madrid are preparing a sensational bid for Juventus striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, according to reports in Spain.

Spanish daily, AS, reports that Real are willing to spend up to £30 millon to hire the services of Ibrahimovic, whom club president Florentino Perez apparently sees as the ideal partner for Ronaldo.

Ibrahimovic’s agent has today confirmed that Los Merengues want his client.

"I can confirm Real’s interest," Mino Raiola told Italian magazine Guerin Sportivo. "They tried to sign him a few months ago, but Juventus said no. It is clear that Zlatan is liked by the Spaniards."

Ibrahimovic has made a big impact with the Bianconeri, whom he joined from Ajax for £11.5 million in 2004.

In his first season in Turin the 22-year-old Sweden international scored 16 goals as Juve clinched their 28th serie A title.

So far this season he has managed three goals in 22 appearances, and his place in the team is under greater pressure from the revitalised Alessandro Del Piero and France star David Trezeguet, who is also in prolific scoring form.

Juventus coach Fabio Capello still sees Ibra as the jewel in the Old Lady's crown, and the Bianconeri appear to be marching serenely towards another title. Capello is likely to be unwilling to let the highly-prized Ibra (though of course Don Fabio himself is persistently tipped to be the next coach at Madrid, despite denials).

The temperamental Ibrahimovic is, however, yet to sign a new, lucrative contract that was reportedly offered to him several weeks ago, and just might be tempted to move to Madrid.

On the other hand, Raiola claims that talks regarding an improved deal at Juve are yet to start.

"I represent Zlatan and I can say that we are not discussing a new contract and we have no appointments scheduled with regard to an extension," said Raiola. "There is no problem between the club’s directors and the boy is happy with life in Turin."

Arsenal 'to sign' Auxerre's Diaby

Auxerre midfielder Vasiriki Abou Diaby is set to sign for Arsenal, according to the French club.
"The player has made the choice for Arsenal," said Auxerre vice-president Gerard Bourgoin.

"And Auxerre, who do not like ruining the careers of our players, have reached an agreement with the club."

The 19-year-old Parisian will sign a four-year deal and become Arsenal's first signing during the January transfer window.

Football / PSV swoop for American teenager
« on: January 12, 2006, 09:26:28 AM »
Every Trinidadian has an Inate hate for American Soccer, considering they used us as the stepping stone to propel them to recent international success.  But i must say how jealous and impressed i am that their young players are getting more and more opportunities at Big Clubs, while our youths fizzle into the lower leagues in England. America, at an exausting pace is growing as a football power, even though they do not have the backing by the main population. Can we learn anything from them, or is the answer simply the amount of money they pour into the sport?

PSV Swoop for American Teenager

According to reports out of Dutch paper De Telegraaf, PSV Eindhoven have offered a contract to American Lee Nguyen.
The 19-year-old impressed during two winter trials with the club, and he is expected to sign on the dotted line once he passes a medical.

Nguyen will join fellow American DaMarcus Beasley on the books of the Dutch power.

After playing with the U.S. U-20 national team at the FIFA World Championships, Nguyen played one season of college ball for renowned Indiana University where he registered an extremely impressive first season.

But the professional ranks beckoned, and before committing his future to Major League Soccer the young winger accepted a trial with PSV.

Following a medical, Nguyen will train with the senior squad but is expected to play with PSV's youth team the rest of the season.

Liverpool Start 2006 as World's Top Club

The Merseyside Reds can kick of the New Year knowing that despite their controversial defeat by São Paulo FC (ranked eighth) in December’s FIFA CWC Toyota Cup there’re still the cream of the crop according to the number-crunchers at the IFFHS.

The list of the top twenty (below) contains more than a few surprises as Villarreal is the top Spanish team, Barcelona only squeak into the lower depths of the list and Real Madrid are totally absent.  In ‘Serie A’ terms Inter are in second place –  two places above San Siro nemesis AC Milan, whereas Juventus are sandwiched between French outfits Auxerre and Monaco in an ignoble 16th spot.

Looking at the representatives of the EPL, the ranking seems rather topsy-turvy with Mourinho’s bulldozing Chelsea stuck at unlucky thirteen below both Arsenal (9th) and Man U (10th).  The ranking does follow strict statistical criteria, but is there anybody out there who agrees with this list?  If you don’t, what would be your list and which criteria would you personally prioritise?

World Club Ranking 2005:

1. Liverpool (ENG) 317 points
2. Inter (ITA)307
3. Bayern Munich (GER) 281
4. AC Milan (ITA) 263
5. CSKA Moscow (RUS) 254
6. PSV Eindhoven (HOL) 249
7. Olympique Lyon (FRA) 246
8. São Paulo (BRA) 246
9. Arsenal (ENG) 245
10. Manchester United (ENG) 240
11. Villarreal (SP) 237
12. Boca Juniors (ARG) 236
13. Chelsea (ENG) 229
14. AZ Alkmaar (HOL) 225
15. Monaco (FRA) 221
16. Juventus (ITA) 219
17. Auxerre (FRA) 209
18. Barcelona (ESP) 207
19. Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR) 201
20. Real Betis (SP) 195
