"Spectators who did not buy tickets were jostling before the match," Sports Minister Dagobert Banzio said on state television. "They smashed one of the main gates of the stadium. They were trampled."

He put the number of injured at 132.

"There were lots of supporters outside who wanted to get in," Interior Minister Desire Tagro said. "There was a crush."

This remind yall of anything?

November 19th, 1989

Jah know why we didn't score, or win that game.

The stadium had over 32,000 in it.  Over capacity by my guess by 6 - 8,000.  No aisles, passageways, nuttin.

One goal... one wiodness... cause the crowd was hype

Optimism?

Boy this game is the greatest.  I playing since 01/02.  The new game is really nice, especially with the 3D animation.  I play Arsenal, sold Bendtner to Villa one time.  Also sold Senderos and Eboue.  I just recently sold Eduardo to Inter.  I bought Riquelme, Adriano, D'Allessandro, and trying now to get Ribery, but Bayern doh want to sell atall.

I came third in the Prem last season 09/10, but with my new bombsquad they can't touch me this year.

Mexicans turn to voodoo ahead of crucial U.S. match

By Mike Steere
For CNN

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Mexico football fans are adopting voodoo tactics ahead of Wednesday's crucial World Cup Qualifier with regional rivals the United States.

Funny or freaky? Voodoo dolls of U.S. players have been issued in Mexico ahead of a crucial football game.

Both sides will be looking to make a strong start to the final phase of qualifying for South Africa 2010, when they meet in the match at Columbus, Ohio. Mexico haven't won in the U.S. for ten years.

In the hope of boosting their team's chances, Mexican sport magazine 'Record' has issued coupons for U.S. team voodoo dolls -- which could be attained with five different stamps from the publication.

The move has also been supported by U.S. chain Blockbuster, which began trading the coupons for dolls in its Mexican stores last week.

Complete with pins, the dolls represent U.S. players, however, users are instructed to wish for Mexican goals, rather than hoping for harm upon the U.S. players.

The practise of using voodoo dolls stems from the belief they represent the spirit of a person. It's believed that by taking actions upon the doll, the represented person will be affected.

Fans will have to wait until the full-time whistle on Wednesday to see if the dolls have made an impact.

Football / Re: Fire Maturana now
« on: December 12, 2008, 09:54:43 PM »
So we calling for Maturana to be fired now... to bring who?  Najjar?  Allyuh joking oui lol

Make sense nah.  Men want Maturana score goals for the team too.  We throw away about 4 clear chances against Grenada, and get a draw against a close to full strength Jamaica in Jamaica with a mostly local team.  Didn't we win the games that really counted just a month or so ago?

So we eh qualify for the Gold Cup.  That means we not allowed to play any friendlies?

Yeah we all disappointed but we too quick to fire people when we need to face the facts:

1) Is not now that we see that the local players not ready.  Didn't we lose to St. Kitts just a year or so ago?

2) Foreign-based players will always make up the crux of our team.  Yes, expecting a local team to beat hungry Caribbean team is asking plenty.

3) Why do we continue to pretend that our players are so "talented" and superior to other islands when really it isn't so? Our youth teams continue to struggle in international and regional competitions.

4) Putting Latas in as coach is not a good move right now.  He is an inexperienced coach at the international level, and has not even consistently been a head coach at the club level.  Yes, it would be nice to have the boss as coach for sentimental reasons, but apart from the short-term spike in confidence in the players that it may bring we will lose out in the medium term.

5) We will qualify... just not with the local-based players playing a major role.

And any coach, Maturana, Beenhakker or even Latas himself could tell you that.

If you going and use one forward, why use Errol McFarlane who is not moblie as Glen or Toussaint ?

Errol McFarlane is good and will work better with a good pardna who carries a different style he can feed off.

Do you know how the one forward system is supposed to work?

You need a big body, someone strong, with the ability to hold up the ball to allow the midfield to have the time to come and support.

"Mobility" as you call it, is not what you are primarily looking for at that position.

Mexican media demand Eriksson's resignation

Reuters

November 20, 2008

Mexican media called on Sven Goran-Eriksson to quit as national coach on Thursday, a day after his side lost to Honduras and avoided an early World Cup exit by the skin of their teeth.

Eriksson's team sneaked into the final stage of the CONCACAF zone qualifiers on goal difference ahead of Jamaica after Wednesday's embarrassing 1-0 defeat in San Pedro Sula.

Mexico, who had two players sent off, took only one point from three away games in semi-final Group Two, where they also suffered a humiliating defeat in Jamaica and were held 2-2 by Canada.

''Kick him out. It only costs $4 million,'' said the sports daily Record, referring to a penalty clause in Eriksson's contract if he is sacked.

''If they want, Record will pay the first dollar. We've qualified for the final stage but that's where the dreams of a country could go down the drain along with millions of dollars and a golden generation,'' added the newspaper.

The daily newspaper Reforma said Mexico had crawled through ''despite their limited technique and the poor level of discipline.''

Former England coach Eriksson replaced Hugo Sanchez who was fired after the under-23 team, which he also coached, failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

Eriksson's appointment was controversial from the outset as critics questioned whether he was prepared for the idiosyncracies of Mexican football and the difficult conditions in Central America and the Caribbean.

Mexico goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez asked for more time for the Swedish coach.

''I give Eriksson my vote of confidence,'' he said. ''The group is behind the coach. The defeat is sad but we progressed to the next stage.''

The hiring and firing of the Mexico coach is decided by the presidents of the 18 first division clubs who are due to hold their next meeting in December.

How does JW work his magic time after time?

How does JW do it?

Gentlemen, comments such as these don't do our football, and our international reputation any good.

This is a public forum.

When we make comments like these others (non-Trinidadians) are given fuel to add to any fire of suspicion that they already have over Jack's alleged backroom deals and how he "helps" Trinidad and Tobago.

So joke is joke, but that is no joke (or statement) to make.

Regarding the schedule, I like it.  Especially good is the fact that the first game is away so no Carnival distraction for the team.  We need to do the following:

take the full six points from either El Salvador or Honduras,

hold serve at home against Costa Rica (we know we eh getting no points in San Jose, we never do)

have a good showing in the U.S. try to come out with at least a draw

Go all out to beat the U.S. and Mexico at home

USA playing Costa Rica at home and Trinidad and Tobago hosting Mexico in the final game of the round are key.

« on: November 19, 2008, 11:09:00 PM »
Probably the worst I have seen Dwight Yorke play in a Trinidad shirt.  Dwight looked every day of his 38 years tonight.

Carlos is class.  Out of form generally still, which is frightening for the other teams in the Hex, but poisonous.

Kenwayne is quite a player.  The header he missed was probably due more to seeking perfection that anything else.  He broke the deadlock in a most clinical fashion.

Keyeno was solid as usual.

Tallest is one of the better readers of the game that I have seen for Trinidad.  The loss of a half yard of pace is more than made up for by greater vision and intelligence.

Latas is Latas.

Birchall was also a bit out of sorts tonight.  Dwight's lapses and reticence put a lot of pressure on Chris.  He did alright, but was not his usual dominant self.

Ince?

Cyd Gray?

Akile Edwards?

Keon Daniel?

Ince played well.  Was not tested much, but did the business when called upon.  Needs to work on his distribution, though.  Too many phantom passes.

Cyd Grey is developing well.  Strange to say that about a player over 30, but he has nonetheless been doing so.  The wild man game seems to be going into hiding, replaced by a more calm yet strong defender.  he did well tonight, especially given the fact that Cuba's best player was the left winger (number 9) and Carlos was drifting so much that it was often two versus one against Grey down that side.

Akilie Edwards deserves a shot.  We know what Avery can do (tackle).  We also know what he cannot do (make a pass to save his life).  So Akilie gets a chance to show what he has.  He played a bit jittery.  He wasn't very sure of himself in the beginning, and only seemed to settle down in the second half.  Nice addition to the team.

Keon Daniel is a starter.  He reminds of the type of player that Trinidadians are before they go to England and get stale: exciting and willing to take on players, yet a bit green and needing big game experience.  I hope he realises how good he is in the next round, and makes everyone sit up and take notice.

Scotty needs to lose some weight.  When did he stop running in the space for forward passes?

Stern missed a sitter.

« on: November 16, 2008, 10:05:59 AM »
Well the word on the block is that he is trying to strengthen them in January....he definitely needs to go after some big names. Essentially he is doing what man u is doing as well but Man u is willing to dish out the cash for the young players so they're getting the guns...Ronaldo , nani , rooney , tevez and my fav Anderson are all young players but they came at a substantial price......He needs to go after Benzema in a hurry and he needs a central defender big time............

Didn't we hear this same thing last year?  The Board had to go the press to say that yes, Wenger was given a "war chest" to buy new players in January.

Did he?

Of course not.

As Alex Ferguson once said, boys can win games but not a championship.  Arsenal was ahead last year after Christmas.  Then injuries happened (as all teams have) and the boys started to wilt.

Oh by the way, Wenger does call the shots when it comes to transfers at Arsenal.  The Board has made it clear on many ocassions that he is the first and last word on that topic.

His ego (also known as Arsenal's firm "youth" policy) is what is keeping us down.

He has to prove to the world that he can win with these handpicked youngsters when a more balanced team would do wonders.

Even Fabregas said that recently.  At 24 he is a veteran on the team.  Steups

A young team will always be inconsistent.  Lose to Stoke the week before. Beat Man Utd last week. Lose to Aston Villa this week.

Time for Wenger to go.

Totally disagree  he's building a young team and it takes time he will lose some and he will win some in a few years when his team tearing up everything in sight ...I hope you remember this article...they play an attractive buildup style but I think they are weak in front of goal and they obviously need to beef up their central defense.....I looked at Adebayor good yesterday .... the boy can score but he is not good with the ball at his foot in fact I think a few years back he was better he is no Henry and he can't create for himself..he is good but he is no where near as dangerous as Rooney and these guys neither is the dutch boy up front....Arsene needs to invest in a dangerous attacking forward (or two) and some central defenders  their most dangerous attacker is Theo and to me he is the most dangerous on the wing where he can use his pace. He needs to look for a Benzema or a Pato or a Jones something like that

What young TEAM is Wenger building?  Every year a couple youngsters leave.  So this "team" that he is building will never appear.  Worse yet:  When those couple youngsters leave Wenger replaces them with more teenagers.  Doh make much sense to be grooming young players for other clubs to poach when they are "ready".

I am a huge Arsenal fan.  But to see Wenger try to feed his ego with this Under-23 team when a few older players developed by other teams would make a big difference is difficult.

And please don't say that Wenger is not doing this to feed his ego.

The "invincables" were a team mixed with youth and experience.

And no, no one man is bigger than any club.  So if he continues to go against the Board and not strengthen the team with the transfer funds that he has been allotted, then yes, he needs to go.

Football / Ramón Maradiaga fired! (Guatemala coach)
« on: October 18, 2008, 01:15:47 AM »
Happened yesterday.  Bye bye Maradiaga.  He must have nightmares whenever he hears the name Trinidad and Tobago!

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Ramon Maradiaga was fired as coach of Guatemala's national soccer team, two days after a 2-1 loss to Cuba damaged the team's chances of advancing in World Cup qualifying.
Guatemala's only chance to advance to next year's finals in North and Central America and the Caribbean is to beat the United States on Nov. 19 at Commerce City, Colo., and have Trinidad and Tobago lose at home to Cuba.

The United States (4-1) has clinched a berth from Group One of the semifinals, and Trinidad and Tobago (2-1-2) is second with eight points, three ahead of Guatemala (1-2-2), which has a better goal difference.

The 53-year-old Maradiaga, who was fired Friday, captained Honduras at the 1982 World Cup.

Football / Re: How good is scotty?
« on: October 16, 2008, 01:28:01 PM »
Trinis still cannot appreciate a solid player when they see one.  Men looking for flash and speed and dribbling and flair, and putting down strength, ability to hold up the ball and wait for support, and consistency.

Playing the lone striker is not about getting the ball, turning and running at the goal.  It is about patience, power, and persistence.  It eh easy to be up there against 4 all by yourself.

Scotty will never impress a casual Trini fan.  He is too basic.  Too simple.  Maybe even too plain.  But ask the central midfielders who rely on him to hold the ball up while they come to support and see what they say?  Invaluable.

One question to answer this is the following: With all the forward starboys that England have, why is Emille Heskey still a starter?

Anyone care to answer?

Football / Game Report From Guatemalan newspaper
« on: October 12, 2008, 07:02:37 AM »

Sad night for the Bi-colour

The National Team (of Guatemela) did not take advantage of the game's location and tied without goals against Trinidad and Tobago, which complicates its classification to the Hex, because now it does not only depend on what they do in the final two games, but what the islanders do.  Once again, we have to take out our caluculators.

Everything was prepared for a party in the Mateo Flores stadium, with the stands full and painted blue and white, but last night the festivities had to be aborted; on the field of play the players of both teams ran, intended to score, but were not effective, although you can forgive a visiting team who came to defend.

As a result, the (Guatemalan) players did not leave to a ovation as they expected they would, but with boos, and with classification still up in the air because the next two games are on the road.

No ideas

The Guatemalan team began without ideas, losing the ball and without creating dangerous plays.

In the opening 45 minutes, Guatemala did not register one direct shot on goal, because the team dedictaed itself to looking for the central midfielders, but these players (Freddy García, Mario Rodríguez y Guillermo Ramírez) all but disappeared.

And when they disappeared, the Trinidadian team played with resolve, principally in defense with strong physical play, fouling off the ball, frustrating the Guatemalan players.

Meanwhile, when Guatemala made its intentions clear, Trinidad and Tobago responded with more options; early in the game in the 11th minute, Carlos Edwards was able to elude his marker and was left alone in front of the Guatemalan goalkeeper Ricardo Trigueño Foster, but was only able to hit the ball directly at the keeper, who then cleaned up the rebound.

The Caribbean team complicated the game for themselves in the 40th minute when wingback Cyd Gray received his second yellow card for a foul on Mario Rodríguez.  Trinidad was left with 10 players, but this did not seem to affect them, on the contrary they played with even more conviction.

The Trinidadian coach, Francisco Maturana won his tactical duel against Ramón Maradiaga; in the second half he introduced Cornell Glen and Clyde Leon, and with one man less was able to arrest and frustrate (with much hope) in an orderly manner.

Carlos Edwards was put into defense, the best player on the pitch placed at wingback, so that the backline of four defenders would not suffer damage and could absorb the Guatemalan attacks.

Having introduced Glen for his speed, he exploited the left wing on various occasions, although his play was often left wanting.

Maradiaga wanted to change history in the second half by leaving only one midfielder with defensive duties and three defenders, but last night talent was absent, neither Freddy García, Marco Pablo Pappa, José Manuel Contreras or Gonzalo Romero were effective, because Trinidad closed all the spaces and hounded the Guatemalans who wanted to capitalize on their domination of the ball.  Only rebounds in the area and the occasional shot of captain Guillermo Ramírez was able to disturb goalkeeper Ince, however.

Calculating Anew

With six points up for grabs, the Guatemalan National team has to take out its calculator once again, but everything no longer only depends on what the visits to Cuba and the United States hold in store, but what Trinidad and Tobago do as they have in their favour the fact that they play at home in the next two games.

All this is in combination with the fact that Guatemala will be playing without its captain Guillermo Ramírez who accumulated his second yellow, and is suspended for Wednesday's game.
