American sprinter Tyson Gay has tested positive for a banned substance and has pulled out of next month's World Championships.

Gay, the 2007 100m world champion, said he was notified by the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) on Friday that his A sample from an out-of-competition test in May had returned a positive.

The 30-year-old's B sample is yet to be tested.

Last month Gay ran the fastest 200m of 2013.

He clocked a time of 19.74 seconds at the United States World Championships trials in Iowa.

Cricket Anyone / Ramdin dropped for Pakistan ODIs
« on: July 11, 2013, 12:11:59 PM »
West Indies have left out wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin from their squad for the first two ODIs against Pakistan in Guyana later this month. Fast bowler Ravi Rampaul, who injured his ankle in the opening match of the ODI tri-series a couple of weeks ago, remains sidelined. There were no other changes from the squad that West Indies picked for the tri-series ODIs in Trinidad.

Ramdin has hit only one half-century since his recall to the West Indies one-day side in October 2011, and has been dropped in several recent matches, both during the Champions Trophy and the home tri-series which also featured India and Sri Lanka. In Ramdin's absence West Indies used opener Johnson Charles behind the stumps, and haven't picked any specialist wicketkeeper in the squad.

West Indies haven't had too much success in the one-day format over the past 12 months, having lost away to Bangladesh and Australia besides a disappointing Champions Trophy campaign. They were also knocked out of the home tri-series before the final, and the only recent series win is the home victory over lightweights Zimbabwe.

They will be looking to improve that record when Pakistan arrive for five ODIs and two Twenty20s. The series begins on Sunday, with the first ODI in Guyana.

News : Dwayne Bravo suspended for one match
Matches: West Indies v Sri Lanka at Port of Spain
Series/Tournaments: West Indies Tri-Nation Series
Teams: Sri Lanka | West Indies
Big Picture
West Indies' horror of a match against India on Friday has not only been an eye opener for them, but has also opened up the tournament. India's chances of qualifying for the final looked bleak after two consecutive defeats, but they trounced the hosts by a big enough margin to pick up a bonus point. West Indies are still on top with nine points and a game to play, and a win against Sri Lanka on Sunday will guarantee their spot in the final. A defeat will still give them a chance at qualifying, but it could come down to a three-way net-run rate scenario if the teams are tied on nine points. A win for Sri Lanka on Sunday will tighten the screws as it will at least put them on par with the hosts. It will also make things tougher for India, who are currently on five points with a game to play.

While West Indies are not yet in grave danger of being knocked out, concerns remain. For starters, they will be without their captain Dwayne Bravo, who has been suspended for a slow over-rate. In all likelihood, Kieron Pollard will take over for the second time in three matches. Nothing went right for West Indies on Friday. If looks could deceive, the pitch certainly did. The grass looked inviting enough for both captains to have a bowl, but the decision to insert the opposition backfired on Bravo as his seamers failed to pick up early wickets. The opening partnership was allowed to develop and the West Indies' death bowling was exposed by Virat Kohli. The batting suffered a bigger meltdown than the bowling, and while the afternoon rain may have spiced up the pitch for the Indian seamers to exploit, the hosts were struggling to get the start they wanted even before rain struck. Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo fell to poor strokes and the loss of two early wickets piled the pressure on the middle order, which looked just as inept. Perhaps the hosts lost the game in the mind after conceding 311. Perhaps batting first might not be a bad option if given the chance, going forward.

Sri Lanka have two more games to play, are tied on points with India but have a superior net run rate. They peaked in all three departments in their previous game, losing just one wicket on their way to 348 and all their five bowlers contributed in bundling out India for less than 200. It remains to be seen if they will change their batting order and give players like Lahiru Thirimanne more time in the middle.

In the spotlight
The over-rates in the last two games have been costing the captains and players, literally. On Tuesday, India overshot by 20 minutes leading to Kohli being fined and on Friday, West Indies were worse by one more minute. It was costlier for West Indies, with Bravo now suspended. Changing captains during a tournament could upset a side's rhythm and West Indies especially can't afford too many stop-gap arrangements, at a time when Bravo is establishing himself as a full-time ODI captain.

Sri Lanka's new opening pair of Mahela Jayawardene and Upul Tharanga was formed after Tillakaratne Dilshan's pre-tournament pull-out due to injury and that combination could stay at least until Dilshan returns. The question is whether Sri Lanka will be tempted to persist with it in future series, after their 213-run stand against India. Jayawardene has had success as an opener, but he hasn't been a regular at that position; Dilshan is most comfortable at the top and Tharanga will be hard to ignore after his 174. With Kusal Perera earmarked for the future, Sri Lanka might find it hard to settle on one pair, once Dilshan returns. It's a good headache to have.

Lendl Simmons, the opening batsman, was called in to the squad on Saturday as a replacement for Bravo.* West Indies could either play him or bring back Devon Smith.

GIBSON CONFIDENT OF WINDIES CHANCES

WICB Media Release.

Bridgetown, Barbados – West Indies have started their preparations in a bid to capture the International Cricket Council’s Champions Trophy 2013 title with a one-week camp in Barbados.

Under Head Coach Ottis Gibson the Windies will go through their drills at Sagicor High Performance Centre at the 3Ws Oval.

The camp started on Monday and will end on Friday. The team will depart from Barbados on Saturday. They will have another camp in Cardiff, Wales from May 25 to June 2 as they try to get acclimatised to the foreign conditions.

Gibson has been at the helm for over three years and is confident the players will get maximum use of the five days of intense work. He also believes the team, to be led by Dwayne Bravo, has the right combination to capture the trophy for the second time. Brian Lara’s team won the 2004 tournament, when they beat host England by two wickets in a memorable final at the Oval.

“We will have a week in Barbados where will we put in some hard work as well as look to do team building exercises,” Gibson said. “We will then leave for Cardiff where we will put in some more work and get ready for the tournament. It is a great opportunity for us. We have quite a few players who have played in England and Wales before.”

Gibson added: “The hardest thing will be to get used to the conditions early. But we have quite an experienced One-Day outfit at the moment, so once we get there and get acclimatised early we will be OK.

“We believe we can win these big tournaments, having recently done it in Sri Lanka when we played brilliantly to win the ICC World T20 Championship. So, this is something that we are really looking forward to. Getting acclimatised to the conditions early will be a huge factor.”

The ICC Champions Trophy, will feature eight teams: Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies. The tournament will be played across three venues – Cardiff Wales Stadium, Edgbaston and The Oval – over 18 days in this action-packed event from June 6-23.

The Windies have been drawn in Group B alongside the Indians, the Pakistanis and the South Africans. They open against Pakistan on Friday, June 7 at the Oval and return to the famous venue on Tuesday, June 11 to take on India. The final preliminary match will be against the Proteas on Friday, June 14 in Cardiff.

“We understand what it will take for us to do well in England and we recognise we will have to be able to bat out the 50 overs, absorb the pressure and be able to catch up at the back end of our innings. We will need a lot of good efforts from the top order to get us in good positions and we believe we have the bowling attack to do very well in the English conditions,” Gibson said.

“We haven’t done all that well in the 50-over format recently and that is something we are trying to address. We had some success against Zimbabwe recently at home and that is certainly something that we can build on as we head to England.

Gibson noted that the ICC Champions Trophy is an important tournament ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. “This is a good opportunity for us as a one-day team to see where we are compared to the other guys. This tournament format is similar to how the World Cup is going to be – you have to get out of the group stage to advance to the second phase,” he said.

“We hope the success and the experience we had in Sri Lanka will help everybody to stay calm when the pressure is on. Our stated aim is to move up the ranking and this tournament will give us a really good opportunity to see where we are compared to the other teams.”

BRAVO NEW ODI CAPTAIN, SAMMY REMAINS TEST & T20 CAPTAIN

WICB Media Release.

St John’s, Antigua – The West Indies Cricket Board today announced Dwayne Bravo as West Indies One Day International captain.

The Selection Panel recommended to the Board of Directors that Bravo be appointed captain as the West Indies One Day International Cricket Team and the Board of Directors approved the recommendation.

The Selection Panel has also indicated that Darren Sammy will be retained as West Indies Test and Twenty20 International captain.

Chairman of the Selection Panel, Clyde Butts explained the recommendation of the Selection Panel:

“Our results in Tests and T20s have been showing consistent improvement and Sammy deserves every kudos for the work he has done in leading and moulding the team in these formats. We remain confident in his leadership in these formats and will recommend that he continues as the captain for Test and T20 cricket. However our ODI results have not been as strong and we believe that it is best that we freshen the leadership of the team in this format,” Chairman of the Selection Panel Clyde Butts said.

“Dwayne Bravo is an experienced, seasoned and senior cricketer who has demonstrated leadership qualities. He has served as West Indies Vice Captain and has had some success when he has led the West Indies team on occasion. We believe that his transition to the position of captaincy will be a smooth one. The Selection Panel therefore recommended to the Board of Directors that Bravo be appointed captain and we are pleased that the Board has approved the recommendation,” Butts added.

“We have every confidence in Bravo as the leader of the ODI team and while his first assignment – the Champions Trophy – will be a challenging one we believe he will receive the full support of the players and the Team Management for a successful campaign. The decision will also allow Sammy to focus on the Test and T20 formats as captain while he will remain in consideration for One Day cricket as an all-rounder,” Butts added.

Bravo said he was honoured to be appointed West Indies captain.

“To be named captain of the West Indies One Day Team is one of the highest honours and I am truly humbled to have been appointed to this most prestigious position. I am really looking forward to the opportunity to lead a great team that has a combination of young talent and experienced players,” Bravo said.

“I must say congratulations to Sammy in his leadership of the team and I am very happy to be taking over from him. I am even happier that he remains in the team and I am looking forward to working with him along with the Team Management and all the players, especially Vice Captain Denesh Ramdin, Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Kieron Pollard and Marlon Samuels,” Bravo added.

“The brand of cricket that I intend to bring is a never-say-die attitude and I am really looking forward to the opportunity,” Bravo said.

Sammy congratulated Bravo and said he will give the new ODI captain his full support.

“I congratulate Dwayne Bravo and give him my full support as he leads the ODI team and he can be assured of my unwavering commitment to the team and our plans to be champions of One Day cricket,” Sammy said.

Following is the West Indies squad for ICC Champions Trophy:

1. Dwayne Bravo – Captain

2. Denesh Ramdin – Vice Captain/Wicketkeeper

3. Tino Best

4. Darren Bravo

5. Johnson Charles

6. Christopher Gayle

7. Jason Holder

8. Sunil Narine

9. Kieron Pollard

10. Ravindranath Rampaul

11. Kemar Roach

12. Darren Sammy

13. Marlon Samuels

14. Ramnaresh Sarwan

15. Devon Smith

Commenting on the squad, Butts said that it was one which has a strong combination of experience and up-and-coming talent which is capable of doing well in the tournament.

“We have some of the most accomplished cricketers in the world along with some young talent who have shown tremendous promise and quality and we believe that the team will gel well, play as a unit and do the Caribbean proud,” Butts said.

“We have shown confidence in the players who have served well in both the batting and bowling departments and have identified some young players such as Jason Holder and Johnson Charles who add quality to the squad,” Butts said.

Kieran Powell was not considered for selection due to a finger injury.

What about Track & Field / Local stadia getting field, track upgrades
« on: March 07, 2013, 10:31:42 AM »
Is about time, them track had sink and bumps in some areas.

INSPECTION: Minister of Sport Anil Roberts, third from left, and other officials on a walkabout at Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, Arima on Tuesday. The stadium is one of four facilities having upgrades done to its track and football field.

New technologies and materials will form an integral part of the upgrade of local stadiums being managed by the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SPORTT).

At a site visit to the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima on Tuesday, Minister of Sport Anil Roberts said he was pleased with the progress of works, and was enthusiastic about the final product being utilised by athletes in the near future.

Works are being conducted simultaneously at the "Larry Gomes" and Marabella's Manny Ramjohn Stadium, and involve complete renewals of the playing surfaces. Contractor for the field surfaces Pooran and Amzad Ogeer Maintenance has completely replaced the old field, filling with a coarse sand imported from Guyana that should allow for better filtration and reduce surface run-off.

Additionally, the grass to be used is Celebration Bermuda grade, which is more resistant to local weather conditions and other environmental factors that cause deterioration, such as mole crickets and weeds.

According to Anthony Blake, facilities manager at SPORTT, 80 per cent of the works at the two venues are complete and should be ready for us in approximately eight weeks. Blake also revealed that the track upgrades at both facilities, as well as Tobago's Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet are also within schedule.

The Arima and Marabella facilities will be furnished with IAAF certified surfaces, which can be used primarily for training purposes, while the Ato Boldon and Dwight Yorke tracks will be IAAF Class 2 certified and therefore suitable for elite international events.

The contractor providing services on the tracks is Advance Performance Technologies, who are expected to deliver the finished product at all the facilities in approximately ten weeks. Blake explained that works to the track are in the first phase, with the old track being removed and the surface being prepared to receive the synthetic layer. Drainage works to the perimeter of the field, where it meets the track, are also to be done. SPORTT recently completed works on the Hasely Crawford Stadium to prepare the Mucurapo venue for athletic events, a mere two weeks after a hectic Carnival season. The first event at the venue, the Carifta trials, went smoothly with no delays as a result of inadequate facilities.

SAMMY RESTED FOR ZIMBABWE ODIS

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – West Indies selectors have rested captain Darren Sammy for the upcoming One-Day International series against Zimbabwe, which bowls off later this month.

The all-rounder, who leads West Indies in every format of the game, has been granted time off for the one-day series only and will be replaced at the helm by seasoned all-rounder Dwayne Bravo.

Sammy has played every game for the regional side for the last two years and is coming off a disappointing tour of Australia where West Indies suffered a 5-0 drubbing in the one-day series.

There will also be no Chris Gayle for the entire ODI series after the leading opener asked to be excused from selection.

Bravo will now lead a predictable 13-man squad announced on Sunday for the first two of the three-match series.

The squad sees the return of Test wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin and the axing of Devon Thomas who experienced an ordinary tour of Australia with the gloves and bat.

There still is no return for elegant right-hander Marlon Samuels who missed the Australia tour through injury.

All three ODIs will be played at the National Stadium in Grenada from February 22-26.

Caribbean Premier League to contract 90 players

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the inaugural edition of which is set to begin on July 29, will include six franchises with 90 contracted players in all. Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Sunil Narine, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Sammy and Kieron Pollard have been named 'franchise players'. Each of these icon players will turn out for one of the six teams, which are likely to be from Antigua, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago.

This was announced by the WICB, alongside Verus International - the Barbados and USA-based company that is funding the Twenty20 league - during a press conference in St James on Tuesday. The CPL agreement between Verus International and the West Indies board stands for a minimum of 20 years. This tournament, the WICB reaffirmed, will replace the existing Caribbean T20 as region's domestic Twenty20 competition.

The financial benefits that the league will offer the players are a big positive, WICB president Julian Hunte said: "The WICB is elated with the agreement, which will allow for regional retainer contracts for a broad pool of players. These contracts will be funded by the CPL to the tune of US$360,000 annually. This significant investment will truly allow for cricketers in the Caribbean to pursue their profession as professionals."

The icon players will not necessarily represent their country in the league. Dirk Hall, managing director of Verus International, said this was to ensure better balance: "The CPL has chosen the top six T20 players in the region based on their stats and performances in this format of the game. Doing it this way ensures that each team is bolstered by a talented, top West Indian player, and that there is balance and fairness across the board on all six teams."

The CPL is also looking to rope in six international 'franchise players', one for each franchise. Every franchise will contract 15 players in all, with a maximum of four overseas signings. Of the regional players, at least six must be from the franchise country (in the case of St Lucia, locals will include players from the Windwards Islands and the in case of Antigua, players from the Leeward Islands) and four must be under-23 players. Apart from the appointed icon players, the rest of the squads will be assembled via a draft system, the working details of which are as yet unknown.

The WICB confirmed that the tournament's schedule has been drawn up so that the dates do not clash with any other West Indies international or domestic tournaments, or the IPL. All contracted players will be under an obligation to turn out for their franchises in the tournament.

The inaugural edition will include 30 group matches, followed by an eliminator and a final. Each of the franchises will play the other five on a home and away basis during the group stage.

The 2014 edition of the CPL is scheduled to be played between July 5 and August 10, while the 2015 tournament will run from June 21 to July 26.

Cricket Anyone / West Indies stun Australia to reach Women’s WC final!
« on: February 13, 2013, 05:16:58 AM »
This deserves its own thread. Historic day!

The West Indies fashioned a sensational eight-run win, its first over Australia in One-Day Internationals, to secure a place in the final
13 February 2013 - 04:26pm IST by Wisden India Staff in Mumbai
It wasn’t expected to be a particularly tough chase for Australia when, in its last Super Six game at the ICC Women’s World Cup, the West Indies scored 164 after opting to bat at Middle Income Group ground in Mumbai on Wednesday (February 13). However, the West Indies fashioned a sensational eight-run win, its first over Australia in One-Day Internationals, to secure a place in the final of the competition.

The West Indies’ reward is a tilt in the title clash against the same opposition at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on February 17 as it looks to sign off its wonderful run in the tournament with a maiden title.

Deandra Dottin’s 67-ball 60 and a super bowling effort, led by Shanel Daley (3 for 22) and Stafanie Taylor (2 for 26), stopped the Australians eight runs short of the total as Australia, who came into the competition undefeated, was shot out for 156.

The chase started badly for Australia as Daley bowled Meg Lanning for a duck in the second over. For the next 22 overs, the Australians were well ahead, with Rachael Haynes (21) and Jess Cameron (39) putting together 31 runs for the second wicket and Cameron then collaborating with Alex Blackwell (45) to add 47 for the third wicket.

But after Cameron became the third wicket to fall with the total on 79, the innings went into a tailspin with the West Indian bowlers finally winning a game pretty much on their own. There was brief resistance from Jodie Fields (18) and Erin Osborne (19), but with the West Indian fielders backing up their bowlers with three run outs, the Australians sank to their first loss in the tournament.

Earlier, Natasha McLean (26) stood alone amid the ruins as the West Indian top- order was sent packing by Megan Schutt (3 for 50) and Holly Ferling (3 for 27). West Indies lost its first two wickets with just 31 on the board and then five more with the total on 92.

That’s when Dottin changed the script of the match with a hectic 60-run knock. Dottin hit ten fours and one six to almost singlehandedly take the total to a respectable and, eventually, match-winning 164.

GIBSON - PLAY LIKE TRUE CHAMPIONS

Brisbane, Australia – West Indies Head Coach Ottis Gibson has called on his players to step up and play like “the true world champions that they are” when they face Australia in a one-off T20 International on Wednesday. First ball at the Gabba is 6:35 pm (4:35 am Eastern Caribbean Time/3:35 am Jamaica Time).

“We are the world champions and we need to come out tomorrow and play like that. If we execute well there is a high probability we will win. We believe we have to play and play well to win. We have a good team and we are confident even though we went down in the ODIs,” Gibson said.

“We didn’t represent ourselves very well in the 50-over format, but that’s gone now. We have to come out and fully focus on this one game left ...one more opportunity to win. We sat down and discussed where we need to get better. We didn’t put together all the ingredients to play a full game during the One-Dayers, so we have another chance to get it together.”

Gibson was at the helm when the West Indies won the ICC World T20 trophy in Sri Lanka last year and expressed the confidence that any one of the 11 West Indies players put out on field on Wednesday could be a potential match-winner.

He was also full of praise for Kieron Pollard, who showed great maturity when he made an unbeaten 109 in the fourth One-Day at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He followed up with 45 in the final match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“The hundred was at Number 5 was a truly outstanding innings. The higher up you go the more responsibility you have with the bat and that was stressed to him,” Gibson said.

“We saw a more controlled Pollard. We knew he could hit the ball out of the ground, but he has shown he can bat for long periods and bat through the innings. That’s very encouraging for us and for him as well.”

Cricket Anyone / WICB ANNOUNCES LIVE VIDEO STREAMING
« on: February 07, 2013, 09:32:42 AM »
St John’s, Antigua – The West Indies Cricket Board today announced that it will provide, at no charge, live video streaming of the Super50 and 4 Day tournaments for the season which starts tomorrow, February 7th.

The WICB will provide a fixed-to-pitch camera video stream for all matches in the two tournaments. The video stream will be available via windiescricket.com and will also have accompanying live ball-by-ball commentary from the radio commentary teams.

The Super50 tournament bowls off tomorrow with three day/night matches starting at 2pm (1pm Jamaica time) – Barbados hosting Jamaica, Guyana tackling Leeward Islands in Antigua and CCC facing Windward Islands at Beausejour.

“Fans have been clamouring for television coverage of regional cricket and while the cost for a full-fledged television production is prohibitive, we have found an online solution which will allow fans to view all matches live via their computers and mobile devices,” said WICB Corporate Communications Officer Imran Khan.

“We are using the available technology to take the coverage of West Indies cricket to new heights which will allow fans anywhere in the world to see our regional players in action at all the venues,” Khan added.

“We had done some limited video streaming previously but we have now established the live video streaming of senior men’s matches as the standard which will continue throughout the season and in upcoming seasons as well,” Khan explained.

“While the video footage will be just one camera initially, we hope, with added funding and possible sponsorship, to widen the production to include multiple cameras and ball follow,” Khan said.

“This is an initiative towards the promotion of regional cricket to bring the live action to a wider audience, especially to fans who are not in the same countries where matches are being played and fans further overseas,” Khan said.
