St John’s, Antigua – The West Indies Cricket Board today announced the 2013 window for the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). The regional governing body announced that the inaugural season of the CPL will be played between July 29 and August 26 2013.

The West Indies team has no engagements during this period and the WICB will not schedule any senior male domestic cricket competitions at this time. The schedule will therefore allow for all regional players to be fully available for participation in the CPL.

Chief Executive Officer of the WICB Michael Muirhead commented: “We are pleased to be able to confirm the window during which the CPL will be played and will take centre stage. The inaugural season promises to be packed with excitement and showcase an extravaganza of cricketing entertainment. After a successful run of the Caribbean Twenty20, we hand the baton over to Verus International as they take charge and establish the CPL.”

“The WICB is excited about the prospects that the CPL will bring for the players, the fans, sponsors and the economies of the Caribbean. We look forward to an explosion of cricket and all the attendant benefits for all stakeholders,” Muirhead added.

General Discussion / Pentagon to end ban on women in front-line combat
« on: January 23, 2013, 08:31:59 PM »
US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has decided to lift the military's ban on women serving in combat, a senior Pentagon official has said.

The move could open hundreds of thousands of front-line positions and elite commando jobs to women.

It overturns a 1994 rule prohibiting women from being assigned to small ground-combat units.

But the military would have until 2016 to argue for any specific posts they think should remained closed to women.

The decision is expected to be formally announced on Thursday.

Lawsuit
The senior defence official told the BBC: "This policy change will initiate a process whereby the services will develop plans to implement this decision, which was made by the secretary of defense upon the recommendation of the Joint Chiefs of Staff."

Military chiefs will be asked to report back to Mr Panetta by 15 May on their initial plans to implement the new policy.

Some jobs are expected to be opened to women this year, while others - including for special forces such as the Navy Seals and the Delta Force - could take longer.

This decision could open more than 230,000 combat roles to women, many in infantry units.

Senate armed services committee chairman Carl Levin welcomed the decision.

"I support it," he said. "It reflects the reality of 21st Century military operations."

Restrictions were first eased a year ago, when the Pentagon opened up 14,500 roles, closer to the front line, which had previously been off limits to female personnel.

In November, a group of four women in the military sued the defence department over the ban, arguing that it was unconstitutional.

One of the plaintiffs, Marine Corps Capt Zoe Bedell, said existing rules had blocked her advancement in the Marines.

During the Iraq and Afghan wars, US female military personnel have worked as medics, military police and intelligence officers, sometimes attached but not formally assigned to front-line units.

As of 2012, more than 800 women were wounded in those wars, and at least 130 have died.

Women comprise 14% of America's 1.4 million active military personnel.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A teenage boy fatally shot two adults and three children inside an Albuquerque home, authorities said Sunday.

The boy was arrested and booked on murder and other charges in connection with the shootings Saturday night, Bernalillo County sheriff's spokesman Aaron Williamson said.

The victims' identities haven't been released, and the boy's motive and connection to the five victims weren't immediately unknown. Williamson said investigators were trying to determine if the victims were related.

Investigators also were seeking to determine who owned several guns that were found at the home, one of which was a semi-automatic military-style rifle.

Authorities weren't releasing the name or age of the teenager accused in the attack. He was booked on two counts of murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death.

Drug company Novartis is betting $20 million on a cancer treatment that seems to have saved a little girl's life, according to a report from The New York Times' Denise Grady.

Just last spring, six-year-old leukemia victim Emma Whitehead was "near death," having gone through chemotherapy twice without success.

But then her parents put Emma through an experimental treatment at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
They infected her with a version of HIV, reprogrammed to attack cancer cells.

Whitehead almost died, but the treatment worked and now she's in remission — and doing cartwheels all over her house.

Grady says the treatment hasn't worked for all patients.

It worked completely on three adults. Four treated adults have merely improved. A child relapsed. The treatment failed two adults completely.

Here's the thing though: Each of these patients was a "hopeless" case before trying the treatment. So any success is huge.

General Discussion / Meet the world's biggest rabbit
« on: November 23, 2012, 08:20:45 PM »
It's the B-easter bunny! Meet the world's biggest rabbit who is 4ft 4inches and weighs a whopping 3.5 STONE

Meet the world's biggest Easter bunny, Darius the enormous Continental Giant, who weighs a whopping three-and-a-half stone and is 4ft 4in.
Darius, aged three, munches through an incredible 12 carrots a day to keep up his strength and fuel his amazing growth spurt.
He already held the title of world's biggest rabbit but has now smashed his own record after vets measured him a month ago and realised he had had grown another inch.

It is a double celebration for Darius who shares his birthday, on Easter Sunday, with his beloved owner Annette Edwards.
Ms Edwards, from Worcester, has bred big bunnies before but Darius is the largest in the history of rabbit-kind.

The 60-year-old, who also holds the Guinness World Record for Oldest Page Three Model, said: 'He is from a dynasty of giant rabbits and now he's smashed his own record and fittingly his birthday falls on April 8 - so he really is the Beast-er Bunny.
'He was officially measured by the vets last month and it's now been confirmed he's even bigger than before.

'We actually share the same birthday and that falls on April 8 which this year is really nice because that's Easter Sunday.'
Darius enjoys two daily meals which includes rabbit mix, three apples and a cabbage.
And if that is not enough, he gorges himself on hay throughout the day.

Ms Edwards said: 'Sometimes I do feel like I own the Were-Rabbit from the Wallace Gromit films but actually he has a lovely nature to him.
'He is so gentle and I wonder if this has helped him grow bigger than the rest.
'He does run around all the time, so I guess the combination of food and exercise has worked out for him.
'He really is a handsome beast though, there's always a bit of a glint in his eye when you go near him.'

Darius is the son of former record holder Alice and the grandson of earlier owner of the crown, Amy.
Ms Edwards, who splashed out £10k on surgery and diets to turn herself into a real-life Jessica Rabbit, said she was stunned by Darius who just kept growing.
She said: 'I think it's nice that the record is being kept in the family.
'Obviously his mum Amy died a couple of years ago and that was upsetting, but I think she would like to know her son had taken the record.
'People ask me what my secret is, but there really isn't one other than just treating them well and really looking after them.
A spokesman from Guinness World Records said: 'This is the biggest bunny in the world.
'Darius is bigger than all the previous record holding rabbits.
'It's unbelievable that a rabbit could grow to over 4ft long.'

General Discussion / Woman charged for sex with human skeleton
« on: November 23, 2012, 08:15:49 PM »
Woman charged for sex with human skeleton

A woman in western Sweden who was arrested after police found skeletons in her apartment has now been charged for using the bones as sex toys, a hobby she claimed was motivated by an interest in history.

“I have never heard of a case like this and neither have my colleagues, so I dare to say that this kind of case is quite uncommon,” prosecutor Kristina Ehrenborg-Staffas told The Local.

A 37-year-old woman, who was arrested in September, was formally charged on Tuesday at the Gothenburg District Court for the crime of “violating the peace of the dead” (brott mot griftesfriden).

The prosecutor could not explain how the woman had managed to collect almost an entire skeleton, but explained that the human remains had been used in an “unethical” way.

"In the confidential section of the investigation we have material which indicates she used them in sexual situations," the prosecutor told the TT news agency.

The woman is believed to have used the human bones for sexual gratification. The evidence that the prosecution presented to the press on Tuesday included two CDs labelled “My necrophilia” and “My first experience” which contained a number of document files and pictures.

However, a psychological evaluation of the woman shows that she is not mentally ill, at least not in any legal sense of the term.

“Some of the photos show a woman licking a skull," Ehrenborg-Staffas told The Local.

"We claim it’s her, but she claims it's someone else and that she found the pictures on the internet.”

The prosecutor believes the woman is "fascinated" with death.

“She has a lot of photos of morgues and chapels, and documents about how to have sex with recently deceased and otherwise dead people,” Ehrenborg-Staffas told The Local.

“You have to ask yourself why she would have those pictures.”

Meanwhile, Katarina Öberg, head of the centre of Andrology and Sexual Medicine at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, admitted that this was the first time she had heard of such a case in Sweden.

“During my ten years I have never had a patient with necrophilia. Although, I guess it is not really something that one confesses to having,” she told The Local.

Evidence also included pictures from a morgue, which were found in a secret compartment in the woman's home, alongside body bags and a drill.

Police emphasized, however, that they had no proof the woman had been digging up graves, according to TT.

The woman pleaded not guilty and claimed she had not done anything illegal.

“She admits to having the bones, but says she collected them out of a historical and archaeological interest,” Ehrenborg-Staffas said.

According to the prosecution, the woman has also sold skulls over the internet.

The latest transaction was between the woman and a person in Uppsala, eastern Sweden. The buyer had allegedly stocked up on three skulls and a spine.

The strange case came to the attention of police by chance after they were informed that a gunshot had been fired from the woman’s apartment in September.

She had also reportedly bragged to some nearby children about keeping knives and dead people in her apartment.

When officers entered her apartment, they immediately called for back-up after finding skeleton parts and knives in the woman’s living room.

At first the woman was arrested on suspicion of murder, but these charges have now been changed to violating the peace of the dead.

If found guilty, the woman faces penalties ranging from fines up to a maximum of two years in prison.

Why the hell Ramdin get drop from the ODI and T20?

West Indies retain Permaul, Powell for ODIs

West Indies have retained left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and opener Kieran Powell for the limited-overs series against Bangladesh, starting November 30. Permaul made his Test debut in the opening game of the two-Test series against Bangladesh in Mirpur and picked up four wickets. He is yet to play an international limited-overs game. Powell made a century in each innings of the Mirpur Test, which West Indies won by 77 runs.

Kemar Roach, who is not playing the Tests due to a knee injury, was passed fit for the five ODIs and one Twenty20 international on this tour.

Six players from the current Test squad will be returning home. They are: Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Fidel Edwards, Kirk Edwards, Assad Fudadin and Denesh Ramdin. Allrounder Dwayne Bravo missed out again, having failed to recover from a thigh strain that had ruled him out of the Champions League T20 in October. There was no place for opener Johnson Charles, who played the ODI series at home against New Zealand.

Kieron Pollard takes over as vice-captain in Bravo's absence. In addition to Pollard and Roach, allrounders Andre Russell and Dwayne Smith, wicketkeeper Devon Thomas and opener Lendl Simmons will join the one-day squad.

West Indies squad: Darren Sammy (capt), Kieron Pollard (vc), Tino Best, Darren Bravo, Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, Veerasammy Permaul, Kieran Powell, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons, Dwayne Smith, Devon Thomas.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Weather Channel had its third straight day of a round-the-clock vigil for the approaching superstorm, and the tone of its meteorologists turned more ominous Sunday with evidence building that their forecasts would come true.

The network is planning to live-stream its television coverage online so people in the eastern United States who lose power can keep up with the news on their mobile devices. The storm is expected to affect some 50 million people.

"We want you to know we are not hyping this storm, OK?" on-air meteorologist Vivian Brown said. "We don't do that at The Weather Channel because we want you to be alert and aware."

Other television networks mixed news of Hurricane Sandy with stories like the presidential campaign. In New York, the local CBS outlet ran a split screen with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie delivering a storm briefing Sunday afternoon and the New York Jets' game against the Miami Dolphins.

But Hurricane Sandy, which is mixing with other weather systems to create a storm of unprecedented strength in the region, kept the undivided attention of The Weather Channel.

The network's Julie Martin, stationed on a beach in Nags Head, N.C., looked increasingly weary of the wind and rain as she described the storm's staying power in a series of live reports.

Meteorologist Jim Cantore, the network's most visible personality, said it was unlike anything he'd ever seen or covered. He had to take a brief break from his live reports from New York's Battery Park City to move his belongings because his hotel had been evacuated; his publicist's apartment was also in the evacuation zone.

Bryan Norcross, the network's senior hurricane specialist, explained in an interview that the network tries to keep its tone serious yet urgent. The network's computer models have been consistent in their forecasts of the storm and it has been acting as anticipated, perhaps with even more strength.

"Our goal has been to get people to appreciate the magnitude of the storm and try to prove to them that, based on everything we know, that this is going to be a system that is outside of their experience," Norcross said.

The Weather Channel sent a message via Twitter calling it "an extraordinary storm, an extremely serious threat" and urged followers to re-tweet it. The storm "will occupy a place in the annals of weather history as one of the most extraordinary to have affected the United States," the network tweeted.

Quickly, the Business Insider tweeted: "WHOA. The Weather Channel meteorologist just completely freaked out."

Twitter filled with messages of concern for people in its path, as well as a few oddities. Comic Ricky Gervais made an unprintable suggestion as a joke, while media mogul Rupert Murdoch tweeted: "Eerie feeling, but kids getting ready to celebrate no school."

ABC News posted a blog of storm-related news, while another Twitter message contained links to live webcams where computer users could track the storm's progress.

Cosmopolitan magazine tweeted advice for "how to cut your bangs at home (because if you're going to be house-bound for Sandy, why not?)." ''Sesame Street" offered a hurricane toolkit to help children understand what's going on.

Judging by The Weather Channel, there were also people who saw a business opportunity. There were frequent commercials from companies that make generators for people to keep electricity going in their homes if the power lines go down.

Partly to underline the seriousness of the situation, The Weather Channel has refrained from using the "Frankenstorm" nickname coined by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration last week when the storm was a model on its computer forecasts.

"Being cute about this storm is not the right idea," Norcross said.
