Other Sports / Is T&T...
« on: August 29, 2007, 02:41:11 PM »
capable of fielding a baseball team? i'm starting to see all these other countries who know nothing about baseball starting teams and entering big tournaments. now i know those who are reading this know some or nothing about baseball and are probably thinking im a crazy person talking crazy talk but i love playing this sport and i think trinidad could field a decent team. since trinidad plays cricket i think T&T could have some prospects with a strong arm,  fielding,  and batting. i'd love to see (or play for) trinidad in the world baseball classic. what do you fellas think about baseball in trinidad?

General Discussion / What would you do in this situation?
« on: June 05, 2007, 10:01:25 PM »
i pulled this from a blog on myspace and thought i'd share it with you forumites...

You are a military veteran in Iraq only months from retirement.  You are basically a days counting short timer.  You joined the military right out of high School, so here you are not even 40 and you are ready to spend your days relaxing.  You have been such a great soldier that the military has offered you every possible bonus for you to reenlist, but you refuse.  To make sure they get the most out of your great experience you have been asked to mentor the new privates coming into your unit.

You are currently mentoring two female soldiers.  Both are 18 years old straight out of High School.  One is a beautiful, tough, book smart, street smart, Muslim young lady from New York City who joined the military so she could get money to attend college.  The other is an equally beautiful young lady from South Dakota, well versed in martial arts and although she is not very street smart, she scored perfect on her SATs and had numerous scholarship offers to the top universities in Britain and America.  She was so patriotic and gave up so much to fight for her country that around camp she was known as Patricia Tillman.  There was also a rumor however, that she was a member of the "Don't ask, don't tell" club.

Now one evening you and these two young ladies are on a mission to deliver supplies to another unit in Iraq.  God must have been on you and the young ladies side because what was an IED meant for your truck went off either a little too late or a little too early.  The impact from the blast however, threw all three of you yards away from the truck.  Again God must have been on your side, because neither of the three of you were seriously hurt.  You could hear insurgents cheering from yards away, it was getting dark and unbeknownst to them, their planted IED failed to score a direct hit.

The combat radios were left in the tuck and you had no form of communication with your unit back at base, it was just you and the young ladies.  You were currently being saved by the darkness but if daylight came and you were not found by friendly forces, the insurgents would notice that you survive and would have you and the two young soldiers for breakfast.  As you look around you noticed you are by the Tigris River.  If only you could get to the other side you and the soldiers would be safely away from the insurgents and could just wait until you were picked up by friendly forces.

You are now convinced that God is on your side, because right beside you is your duffel bag with a blow up raft that you carried with you from the States.  In fact, your fellow soldiers would tease you about it and say you are going to war not a vacation.  You were an experience rafter and by the width of the river you could pretty much tell how long it would take to raft across the river.  If one person was paddling it would take an hour, if it was two people peddling it would be half hour.  It was now about 10PM and daybreak would not be until 5AM, so you have more than enough time to get out of the view of the insurgents before they would be able to see you.

There is one problem however; the maximum capacity of the raft is 200 pounds.  You weigh 200 pounds and the young soldiers weigh 100 pounds each.  So now you have insurgents who will see you and no doubt kill you at daybreak.  You have a raft that could take you safely to the other side of the river away from the insurgents but it can't carry all three of you.  It could carry you alone or it could carry the two ladies alone.

What would YOU do in this situation?

 - i'd send the two ladies across.

Destra pelted and lost her cool in ‘Bacchanal’ fete
By Denise Balgobin Friday, February 16 2007

Yesterday fans of soca star Destra Garcia from the band Atlantik were shocked to hear that she was pelted with various objects during the band’s performance at the Bacchanal Wednesday fete at Bowen Marine in Chaguaramas.

Reports on various radio stations alleged that persons in the crowd threw objects at her while she was singing her popular “Independent Ladies.” One glow stick even struck her in the face.

There were even claims that she reportedly reacted and started using obscene language, threatening to stop the fete.

During a telephone interview with Newsday, Destra admitted she did use one expletive, but expl-ained, “I just lost it. I lost my cool. I did say the “F” word once, but I managed to pull myself together.”

She stated that when she first went on stage, a few people started pelting her with ice, then glow sticks, one of which struck her on the back.

“I told the people to stop it and cool themselves. Then one of the glow sticks hit me on my face. That’s when I lost it. I didn’t know what to do and I can’t even describe how I felt at that point. I reacted in anger, and it took a tremendous amount of strength and will power for me to continue my performance,” she stated.

“Everyone knows this is a very stressful, very frustrating time for artistes. Most of us have been performing in three or four fetes every night. I am not saying this is an excuse for anything. I know I was wrong to lose it, and I regret that. I know that this incident is just one, and it was probably influenced by excessive alcohol. While I have no physical scars or bruises, this has hurt me deeply inside.”

She also said that with the struggle performers face in the entertainment industry, it is a sad day when artistes are attacked by patrons in a fete.

Destra said she tried to remain calm and started to talk to the crowd telling them that this is the kind of thing everyone should avoid.

“Most people go to a fete to enjoy themselves, and we already have so much violence out there that we now have to be concerned about this type of violence when we go out to party.”

Destra was grateful that she was applauded by the crowd for her reaction when she spoke out, and added, “Even today, I have received so many calls of encouragement. Even my sponsors at Digicel called to express their support.”

Football / Riquelme back to Boca
« on: February 09, 2007, 08:30:24 AM »
Villarreal CF have allowed midfielder Juan Román Riquelme to join Argentinian side CA Boca Juniors on loan for the remainder of the season.

Back to Boca
The 28-year-old won six titles with Boca between 1998 and 2001 before moving to Spain to join FC Barcelona, where he scored three goals in 30 league games. He arrived at Villarreal in 2002, scoring 36 goals in 106 games for the Yellow Submarine and helping reach last season's UEFA Champions League semi-finals where he missed a vital penalty in the aggregate defeat by Arsenal FC.

In the stands
The Argentinian's contract with Villarreal is due to expire in 2009 but disputes with coach Manuel Pellegrini have seen the player watching his side's last eight matches from the stands. This season, Riquelme has played 13 league games and scored once. Villarreal are tenth in the Primera División table with 29 points.

Football / Blues make world record bid for Eto'o!!!!
« on: March 18, 2006, 06:47:33 PM »
Spanish club Barcelona say Cameroon international, Samuel Eto'o will not be leaving the club this summer.

English champions Chelsea were reported to have made a world-record US$88 million bid for the Cameroon striker earlier this month.

But the Spanish champions insist that Eto'o is not for sale.

Coach Frank Rijkaard says their attentions are focused on strengthening their attacking options rather than letting players leave the Nou Camp.

However club president Joan Laporta is reportedly looking to lure Arsenal's Thierry Henry which might put Eto'o's place in danger.

But manager Rijkaard insists he does not want to lose his top scorer.

"The club has no intention of selling as good a player as Eto'o."

"Eto'o is very happy at Barca and has said nothing to me about wanting to leave."
