Football / Superpippo, an alternative idol

Thought this article on Inzaghi was interesting, even if I'm not a fan of his

Quote
Last Tuesday, the great Gerd Muller - arguably the finest-ever penalty box predator - saw his long-standing record of 62 goals in European competition matched by a man to whom he was once a role model. Yet while Filippo Inzaghi's match-winning brace as a second half substitute for AC Milan in Donetsk saw him emulate one of the game's striking legends, the 34-year-old's name is unlikely to ever be uttered in the same reverential tones that are widely reserved for Der Bomber.

Inzaghi, who holds a diploma in accountancy, could justifiably protest that his numbers stack up. Two UEFA Champions League medals, three Scudettos, one FIFA World Cup™, 57 caps and over 250 career goals - 25 of them for Italy - is certainly not the career haul one would expect of a limited and lightweight striker.

Yet despite the overwhelming statistical evidence to the contrary, this is just what Superpippo's many critics - both at home and abroad - claim the the Milan front-runner is. Johan Cruyff, perhaps the most high-profile of these detractors, once cuttingly remarked: "Actually, he can't play football at all. He's just always in the right position."

Even more well known is Sir Alex Ferguson's famous quip that Inzaghi "was born offside", with both comments tapping into a surprisingly widely-held belief that the Italian has built his glittering career on a combination of luck and borderline dishonesty. Certainly, when Inzaghi deflected in Andrea Pirlo's free-kick with his shoulder in the 2007 Champions League final, there were plenty of neutrals looking on who shook their heads and muttered "typical Inzaghi... "

No matter that he has scored goals wherever he has played, from Piacenza and Atalanta to Juventus, Milan and the national team, nor that he went on to claim a beautifully-taken second in Athens. Even the fact that Inzaghi had scored a near-identical goal at Empoli earlier in the same season could not deter his critics from citing that deflected goal as yet another example of fortune favouring a player whose talent does not justify the success he enjoys.

Inzaghi, these cynics argue, is neither strong, skilful nor particularly deft of touch. His sharpness in and around the penalty area also belies a surprising lack of pace; in Milan's pre-season sprint tests, he was slower over 40 metres than the likes of 39-year-old Paolo Maldini, Cafu, 37, and Serginho, who is 36. His style of play, meanwhile, can be clumsy and ungainly, contrasting starkly with club colleague Kaka, while his predilection for pouting when pulled back for even the most blatant offside decision wins him no new friends.

'A consummate professional'
Yet while Kaka is feted and Inzaghi maligned, perhaps it is Superpippo who is more deserving of praise. After all, while Milan's Brazilian playmaker and the likes of Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldinho have been blessed with extraordinary natural talent, Inzaghi has dedicated his life to reaching the top without the advantage of such God-given ability.

The man himself has summed up the key to his success thus: "If you are not born a Ronaldo or a Kaka, you can still become a great player through commitment, serenity, perseverance, loving what you do. You can learn from every match. I prepare everything in the tiniest detail. My diet, how I train. This has been my secret."

In truth, Inzaghi is more acutely aware of his technical and physical deficiencies than anyone, and is equally conscious of the criticism he receives. What his detractors perhaps do not appreciate is that he watches and then re-watches tapes of the matches in which he is involved, and still endures sleepless nights before almost every fixture.

"He's a consummate professional," was Ancelotti's assessment of a player so sensitive to his own shortcomings that, even at 34 and despite all that he has achieved, still sees himself with plenty to prove. After equalling Muller's record, he was moved to say: "You always have to keep proving yourself, even at my age. I like to break records and prove people wrong who say I'm too old."

It is partly due to this burning desire to confound his critics that has ensured that, having seen his Milan career all but written off after the arrivals of Alberto Gilardino and Ronaldo, Inzaghi is still proving a star turn for the Rossoneri. Now, after reaching the 62-goal mark in his 97th European appearance, he has in his sights former strike partner's Andriy Shevchenko's record tally of 34 continental strikes for the Milan giants.

Inzaghi, now just a goal short of the Ukrainian, said: "It would be nice to beat Sheva's tally, as he was a great team-mate and friend of mine. Fortunately, I play in a team that has allowed me to score many goals... And altruism isn't one of my top characteristics!"

Typical of Inzaghi, this jocular, self-deprecating reference to his own infamous selfishness in front of goal sums up the striker who has matched, and may yet surpass, Muller. True, he has his failings - and is well aware of each and every one of them - but Inzaghi's goals continue to mean that his supporters and colleagues love him just the way he is.

The Mali international and Seville striker Frederic Kanoute, seen here in September 2007, said Tuesday that the recent pitch attack by angry Togo supporters armed with knives was the "worst moment of my life."
PARIS (AFP) - The Mali international and Seville striker Frederic Kanoute said Tuesday that the recent pitch attack by angry Togo supporters armed with knives was the "worst moment of my life."

Kanoute had stitches in his back after being struck with a belt while teammate Mahamadou Sidibe, who plays for English club Stoke, had surgery for a knife wound to his arm.

The Togo supporters invaded the pitch at the Kegue Stadium in the Togan capital of Lome after their side lost 2-0 last Friday in qualifying match for next year's African Nations Cup tournament in Ghana.

"Frankly it was the worst moment of my life," said Kanoute. "I have never known this type of problem on a football field.

"After the match I was sad more than anything else. I couldn't enjoy the victory. It was really really bad."

Kanoute called for the world football governing body, FIFA, to take action over the incident while the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have opened an inquiry.

"We're following the situation closely and awaiting the match report," a CAF official told AFP on Monday.

"The question will be discussed during the scheduled meeting of the organising committee of the African Nations Cup on October 18 at Accra."

Sidibe is now back at Stoke and is receiving treatment, although the severity of his injuries remain unclear.

"Although we do not yet have full information on what took place in Togo, everyone will agree that no-one wants to see this type of thing happening," said team chief executive Tony Scholes.

"Obviously our concerns are with Mama and the hope that the injury is not too serious. Our responsibility however is to protect our club and its players, and we will be making representations to the appropriate authorities."

The African section of the professional players association Fifpro said the incident may make Africans playing in Europe think twice before playing for their national teams and their European clubs less likely to release them.

Trinidad Postpones Friendly
Posted on: Sun 23 Sep 2007

AFTER asking for clarification from the Trinidad & Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) concerning dates and venues for their two proposed international friendlies in mid-October, for which they had called up Silvio Spann, we have now received a further fax to say that at least one of the games has been cancelled, so Silvio's services will no longer be required on this occasion.

The TTFF had been hoping to add a match with Mexico to one against El Salvador, after another proposed friendly against Guatemala in Miami had already been called off, but it now appears that Mexico will instead face Nigeria.

There was no dispute over releasing the player, as this is an international week on the FIFA calendar, but Silvio will now have a midweek free from transatlantic travel.

Which is Sunderland's best goal in September? We want you to vote.

The Black Cats scored five goals last month, some of them great strikes.

Here's the line-up ... now it's up to you.

Kenwyne Jones v Reading
Home debutant Kenwyne Jones capped off a great display with a 28th-minute goal which put his side ahead. The striker took possession from Grant Leadbitter and turned his marker before hitting a left-foot shot from 20 yards that beat Marcus Hahnemann.

Ross Wallace v Reading
Kenwyne Jones crossed from the right and Ross Wallace stretched to direct a left-foot shot home from close range.

Grant Leadbitter v Middlesbrough
Grant Leadbitter finished off a good move. His shot hit Michael Chopra and bounced back into the path of the midfielder, who scored from eight yards out.

Liam Miller v Middlesbrough
Substitute Liam Miller emerged to crash home a last-minute equaliser, looping home a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Grant Leadbitter v Blackburn
Grant Leadbitter scored a last-minute goal for the Black Cats, curling home a low shot from 25 yards.

Goals from Andrew Driver, Michael Stewart and Andrius Velicka gave Hearts victory against a luckless St Mirren.

Driver gave the Edinburgh side the lead against the run of play in 40 minutes with a low drive from inside the box.

Stewart doubled Hearts' lead from the spot and Mark Corcoran reduced the deficit, before Velicka grabbed a third to seal the win.

The hosts were denied a penalty in the first-half when Eggert Jonsson appeared to foul Stephen O'Donnell.

French goalkeeper Anthony Basso made his Hearts debut at Love Street after Steve Banks was struck down by food poisoning.

There was no room for Calum Elliot despite his double in Tuesday's CIS Cup victory over Dunfermline.

Hearts made four changes with Driver returning from injury and Ibrahim Tall and Audrius Ksanavicius also coming in.

Tomas Kancelskis and Kestutis Ivaskevicius dropped to the bench alongside Elliot.

St Mirren recalled Franco Miranda after suspension with Alan Reid making way at left-back.

The hosts looked the more likely to score in a first half with plenty of endeavour but little in the way of skilful play.

St Mirren appealed for a penalty when Jonsson appeared to bring down O'Donnell but referee John Underhill waved away the appeals.

Driver gave Hearts the lead five minutes before the break when Michael Stewart's corner broke to him on the right-hand side of the penalty area and his flashing drive found the net.

The Edinburgh side pressed for a second goal before half-time and Ksanavicius forced Smith into a smart save after the Lithuanian volleyed Robbie Neilson's lay-off.

St Mirren's fans were further enraged 10 minutes into the second half when Stewart tumbled under David Van Zanten's challenge and the referee pointed to the spot.

Stewart took the penalty himself and doubled Hearts' lead.

St Mirren pushed to reduce the deficit but lacked a cutting edge in and around the box.

Van Zanten missed a glorious chance to score after 75 minutes when he blazed over from a couple of yards.

But the hosts set up a tense finish when Corcoran's bullet header from Chris Birchall's cross flashed past Hearts keeper Basso.

St Mirren's hopes of salvaging a point faded with seven minutes to go when Velicka beat keeper Chris Smith with a low shot from inside the box to seal the points for Hearts.

St Mirren: Smith, van Zanten, McCay, Haining (Kean 48), Potter, Mason, Murray, O'Donnell (Corcoran 59), Miranda, Birchall, Mehmet (McGinn 69). Subs Not Used: Howard, Brittain, Brady, Docherty.

Birchall seems to have found his place in the squad. He takes most of the corners and swings in his fair share off crooses (playing winger I guess)

Ten-man Raith Rovers put an end to 15 years without an opening-day win as Marvin Andrews' header gave them victory over Airdrie United.

Raith had near misses themselves, with Steven Hislop hitting the crossbar.

But they had to cling on for victory after Graham Weir was sent off three minutes from time.

Jabloteh pummel Tobago United.
By: Lasana Liburd (Express).

Ex-Pro League champs make move.

Four wins on the trot and an emphatic 5-1 victory over Tobago United yesterday evening should help dispel any trace of self-doubt within the ranks of former T&T Pro League champions, CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh, when they face Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA on Saturday afternoon.
There was much speculation of resurgence in Tobago recently but little evidence of it at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar yesterday as Jabloteh made light work of their opponent's naive backline.
Jabloteh, who were second at kick off, were four goals ahead by the interval and, although coach Terry Fenwick was obliged to discuss the remaining 45 minutes, his mind might easily have strayed to the weekend's top of the table clash against Caledonia.
It was at the same Malabar venue that the English coach endured a nightmare start to the season as Caledonia spanked Jabloteh 3-0 on April 14 and Antiguan striker Peter Byers made a nightmare debut to his Trinidad and Tobago career with a red card after just 30 minutes. East Trinidad did not seem so unfriendly to either foreigner yesterday.
True, Tobago did open the scoring after just five minutes. Kayode Legall headed home from a pinpoint Jemmiel Smith left side cross for his fourth goal in as many matches.
But Legall's supposed statement of intent seemed lost on his own teammates and, in particular, the Tobago defence.
Trent Noel equalised, four minutes later, after working a give and go with Atullah Guerra and Jabloteh were ahead by the 15th minute as Byers collected a deep pass from Ronald Primus before burying to the left of Tobago goalkeeper Andrew Durant.
There was a hint of offside in Byers' item but Tobago did themselves no favours by persistently failing to abide by the golden rule of the offside trap--a high defence is impotent without tackling midfielders.
Byers and Jason Marcano notched two more Jabloteh goals by converting well-timed passes through the heart of the Tobago defence, while Byers barged past two defenders for his hat-trick a minute before the break.
If it were a boxing match, Tobago coach Peter Granville would have pleaded "no mas" and taken his exit then and there.
Jabloteh lost focus at the restart, though, and failed to add to their guest's humiliation. Tobago captain Warren Phillips inadvertently smacked the ball off his own bar in the 65th minute while Jabloteh substitute Cornell Glen hit an upright in the 82nd minute. But the healthy scoreline might have satisfied Fenwick.
It is the first occasion that a Pro League team has scored five times in a single match so far this season while the win matched a four-goal aggregate triumph for Caledonia against Police on May 16. There is that Caledonia team again.
The "Eastern Stallions" played last night against fourth-placed Vibe CT 105 W. Connection and needed a win to keep ahead of Jabloteh on goal differential.
Either way, Jabloteh can create some daylight space at the top of the Pro League standings if they managed to save some firepower for the weekend.

San Juan Jabloteh: - Daurance Williams, Dwayne Jack, Karlon Murray (Akil Harley), Trent Noel (Devon Jamerson), Aurtis Whitley, Atullah Guerra (Cornell Glen), Elton John, Jason Marcano, Ian Gray, Peter Byers, Ronald Primus.

Tobago United: - Andrew Durant, Kayode Legall, Warren Phillips, Tichard Joseph, Uriah Palmer, Jamal Jack, Kevin Adams, Keon Samuel, Kerron Phillips, Julio Fernandez, Jemmiel Smith (Handel Mnaswell).
Defence Force & North East Stars continued to climb.
By: Nigel Simon (Guardian).

Defence Force and Economy North East Stars continued their climb up the table with comfortable wins.
At the Hasley Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, Defence Force got goals from Devon Jorsling, Corey Rivers and Richard “Shaka” Roy in a 3-0 shut-out of faltering United Petrotrin.
Jorsling opened the scoring in the 16th minute when he side-footed in a Kevon Carter right-sided cross that managed to sneak under the foot of Petrotrin defender Devon Drayton.
Rivers made it 2-0 one minute before the interval when he latched on to a Jorsling pass and stroked the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal past the advancing Perry Martin.
Roy made certain of all three points for the “Teteron Boys” in the 78th minute when he outmuscled his way past a weak Drayton screen and toe-poked the ball into the roof of the net past a stranded Martin.
In the first match at Couva, Randolph Jerome (ninth), Kendall Velox (26th) and Kendall Jagdeosingh (80th) were all on target for Stars in the win over Police. Superstar Rangers hosted defending champions bmobile Joe Public in the second match at Mucurapo last night lost 3-0 to the Estern Lions, a double from Gary Glasgow and one from in-form Kerry Baptiste was enough to sink Superstar Rangers.
Antiguan Peter Byers continued his good form in front of goal when he scored a first-half hat-trick in CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh’s 5-1 come-from-behind win over Tobago United at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, yesterday.
But the win did not look to be on the cards early on as Tobago handed Jabloteh an early set back in its bid to gain sole possession of the lead on the table when Kayode Legall opened the scoring in the sixth minute.
Jabloteh did not panic and got back on level terms in the 10th minute through national midfielder Trent Noel, while Byers put his team ahead for good seven minutes later.
The Tobagonians were still in the match at 2-1 down, but that quickly changed as Byers extended the lead to 3-1 in the 35th minute before Elton John (44th) and Byers netted on the stroke of half-time for a 5-1 cushion.
On the resumption, Jabloteh with its handsome lead, took its foot off the pedal while holding the Tobago United players at bay to register win number two from as many meetings between the two clubs in four days.
With the win, Jabloteh improved to 23 points from 10 matches, three ahead of Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA, who came up against Vibe CT 105 W Connection in a late match at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.

Joe Public: — Alejandro Figueroa, Gary Glasgow, Devon Caseman, Dale Saunders (capt), Lyndon Andrews, Jason Springer, Kerry Baptiste (Gregory Richardson), Kwame Wiltshire (Arnold Dwarika), Nigel Pierre (Kayode Mc Kinnon), Seon Power, Lyndon Harris.

Road to SA 2010 starts in Samoa(FIFA.com) Thursday 21 June 2007

Let the battle for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ commence. Oceania will get the ball rolling and kick off the qualifiers for the most prestigious trophy in sport, with the 13th South Pacific Games held on the island of Samoa forming a pre-qualifying tournament for the first ever FIFA World Cup™ to be held on African soil.

Ten countries will take part in this South Pacific mini-tournament, with the top three teams going through to meet New Zealand in a four-team, round-robin-format group to establish the Oceania qualifier.

The picturesque island state in the south-west Pacific will therefore be hosting the earliest qualifiers for the final phase of a FIFA World Cup, the next edition of which is still three years away. Two groups of five will be squaring off between 25 August and 7 September 2007 at the J.S. Blatter Playing Fields Complex in the Samoan capital of Apia.

Group A sees Fiji, Tahiti, New Caledonia, the Cook Islands and Tuvalu drawn to face each other, while hosts Samoa will be in Group B, where they will take on the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga and American Samoa.

The top two teams in each group will contest the semi-finals, with the finalists and the third-placed team (after a play-off) qualifying for the OFC Nations Cup along with New Zealand, where qualification for the FIFA World Cup will be at stake (with the exception of Tuvalu, which are not a FIFA member, should they qualify). The group will see all four countries playing each other home and away. The top team will then play a two-legged play-off against a team from Asia - the winner securing a berth for South Africa.

Solomons and Vanatu square up
Group B of the pre-qualifying tournament should be very interesting, as it contains both the Solomon Islands, who came second in their group last time around, and Vanuatu, who were the surprise package of the Oceania zone in qualifiers for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™. Both teams finished top of their pre-qualifying groups three years ago.

The Solomon Islands were particularly strong back then, playing as they were on home soil. Under the watchful eye of Alan Gillett, they went unbeaten through the initial tournament. The English-born coach went on to take his team to second place in the OFC Nations Cup, relegating New Zealand to third place and seeing his men square off against Australia for the right to take part in the FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off.

They also had a little help from neighbours Vanuatu, who also came through their group without suffering a single defeat and then turned the form-book on its head in the OFC Nations Cup by beating New Zealand 4-2, helping the Solomon Islands to their second-placed finish. Seimata Chilla, Lexa Bibi, Jean Maleb and Alphonse Qorig scored the goals in this historic match played at the Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide, Australia.

There will be everything to play for come August and September, therefore, with spots at the OFC Nations Cup up for grabs. FIFA.com will of course keep you up to date with all the news and reports from this first pre-qualifying tournament for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

As usual, the sun rises early in the east. Now let we stay there and feel we have plenty time to get we act in order... ???

I had done this quite a while ago, but I didn't want it to get lost in the Gold Cup information.
Now that the "c-team is out of the Gold Cup, I figure this is the best moment to post it before i forget.

There will obviously be a few players missing for diverse reasons, but all in all, it should be a relatively complete statistical and subjective look at the majority of the key foreign based players in our world cup as well as some promising talents plying their trade in foreign shores pre and post World Cup. I apologise in advance for the British bias; but this is where the information is the easiest available.

Here goes...

Raith Rovers 0-0 Stirling Albion
SFL
Raith Rovers and Stirling Albion will go into Saturday's second leg of the First Division play-off all square.

Steven Bell fired wide, David O'Brien struck the post and David Bingham fired over with the goal gaping as Stirling dominated the first half.

Denis McLaughlin beat the offside trap but failed to capitalise and a Richard Campbell effort went wide as Rovers improved after the break.

Goalkeepers Chris Fahey and Myles Hogarth had good late saves.

Raith Rovers 0-0 Stirling Albion

Rovers' Fahey denied Stewart Devine a late winner and Hogarth blocked John Neil's long-range effort.

It meant there is all to play for at Forthbank Stadium on Saturday after a tense but absorbing goalless draw.

Coyle prepared for Scotland exit

St Johnstone manager Owen Coyle says he is hopeful of retaining the services of striker Jason Scotland but admits he faces a fight to keep him in Perth.

The Trinidad and Tobago international's contract is due to expire in August.

"Jason's a great player and I'd love to keep him here, we'll just have to wait and see what happens," Coyle said.

Scotland's agent, Michael Berry, has told BBC Sport that there is interest in the 26-goal striker both in Scotland and England.

Scotland scored for St Johnstone in Saturday's 4-3 victory over Hamilton but it was not enough to prevent Gretna clinching the championship.

Coyle announced on Tuesday that fellow forward Derek Lilley, keeper Bryn Halliwell and midfielder Neil Janczyk were all leaving the club in the summer.

Despite these changes, Coyle sees Scotland as an important part of his squad for next season but knows there is little he can do to prevent interest in the player.

"I'm not daft, I know how good a player he is and I'm sure there will be a lot of interest, but there's nothing I can do to stop that," he added.

Berry has revealed that an SPL club and one in English League One are keen on the 28-year-old forward.

Scotland spent two years at Dundee Utd - scoring 10 goals - before a Home Office decision denied him an extension to his work permit.

He was then snapped up by the McDiarmid Park side who had their application approved.

If he does move on elsewhere, he will require a new work permit.

McMenamin wins Division One prize

Gretna's Colin McMenamin is the Scottish Professional Footballers' Association player of the year in the First Division.

The striker leads the scoring charts with 24 goals in his first season with the Black & Whites.

He beat fellow forwards Mark Roberts of Partick Thistle and Jason Scotland of St Johnstone to the top prize.

St Johnstone defender Goran Stanic made up the list of nominees after a fine season with the Perth side.

Tough, he and Jason finish with the same 26 goals, but Jason score a lot more in the cup competitions. I can't believe they ent win a thing: 2 semi finals in cup competitions and second placed in the league on a last minute goal. Scotty pay he dues with the whole work permit thing, he could only grow from strength to strength imo... :-\

Championship

2    Sunderland    44    23    82
3    Derby    44    16    81
4    Preston    44    12    71
5    West Brom    43    19    70
6    Wolverhampton    44    -2    70
7    Southampton   44    20    69
8    Stoke    44    19    69
9    Colchester    44    18    69
10    Sheff Wed    44    5    68

Carlos, Dwight and Stern are already assured of at least a playoff spot.
For automatic promotion they will need to equal or better third placed Derby's last two results.
For the Championship title they will have to hope Birmingham loses points in at least one of its 2 matches and better them.
Sunderland have a game against 2 teams that have nothing to play for, Burnley, and relegated Luton (Carlos will be warmly welcomed back at his old club)
Both of Birmingham's games are against teams that are chasing playoff spots (Preston and Sheff. Wed)
Derby's second game against Leeds can be difficult as Leeds is fighting to stay in the Championship.

Kenwyne is in a 7 team dogfight for the 3 remaining playoff spots.
Southampton's second game is against relegation threatened Southend, and could prove difficult if they are still alive going into the 2nd day.
Prestons second game is difficult, against leaders Birmingham chasing the title.
West Brom's second game is against Barnsley, who may still need a point to be sure of avoiding the drop.
Same goes for Wolverhampton against Leicester.
Stoke has a hard first game against fellow play off chasers Colchester; as does Colchester against Stoke.
Sheffield Wednesday has a hard first game against Birmingham

13 Crystal Palace 44 4 59
14 Ipswich 44 3 58
15 Burnley 45 4 57
16 Norwich 44 -13 57
17 Coventry 44 -15 53
18 QPR 44 -12 52
19 Leicester 44 -13 50
20 Barnsley 44 -24 50
21 Hull 44 -16 46

Chris and Coventry have nothing to play for, they are safe from relegation and sure to not be promoted; they can finish as high as 13th and as low as 20th, disappointing in any case compared to their 8th placed finish last year. Their last two games are against playoff contenders West Brom and then away to Burnley who have nothing to play for either....

Tony (Warner) and Norwich are in a similar position. They have nothing to play for and can finish between 12th and 18th. Unfortunately their two last games are against playoff chasing Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday.

I not a Malick man or anything so, but I find men does real neglect Jason Scotland in this place.
Granted he playing in the Scottish 2nd division but the only reason he there is because the damn home office mess up he work permit; Scotty is at least a first division player.

On Tuesday he scored a double, same as Kenwyne, and Stern and I ent hear a peep about it. More importantly, he on 19 goals scored for the season - he headed for a 20 goal season easy and could even buss 25. No trini ent do that in a long long time, at any level...

Give the man a bligh nah allyuh!

Peace Out.

Atkinson named as Kettering chief

Atkinson has recently had brief spells at Peterborough and Swindon
Ron Atkinson has been appointed director of football at non-League Kettering Town.
The 67-year-old is returning to the Conference North club, where he started his managerial career in 1971.

Atkinson went on to manage Cambridge, West Brom (twice), Manchester United, Sheffield Wednesday (twice), Aston Villa, Coventry and Nottingham Forest.

He has been out of football since 2004 when he lost his job as an ITV pundit for making an on-air racist comment.

The comment was about Marcel Desailly, then of Chelsea, and was made after a Champions League match when Atkinson thought he was off-air.

He parted company with ITV and did not find offers to return to football or the media forthcoming, although recently he spent very brief spells at Swindon and Peterborough as a consultant, for the benefit of a television programme.

He coaching a NON LEAGUE side, and to think this man might have been we coach last year...

I just hope he doh have no words for Boucaud...

Football / Peter Jennings Video on corruption in FIFA
« on: January 19, 2007, 03:58:46 PM »
The German TV station ARTE run a series of reports on football tuesday night, in particular the hidden side of sport business and world cup organisation.

The first one was the report on corruption in FIFA. It was principally directed at Sepp Blatter but it have a nice 15 minutes on Jack Warner -

Ah never feel so shame to hear TNT name call on international TV. They even had some footage from the friendly against Peru, nice and clear...Jones goal and celebration and another part with Aurthis and Yorke in practice.

The coup de Grace was JAck, telling Jennings to go f--- heself, and then with UNC hat in evidence badjohning any 'white man' to come in he country and intimidate him...

Liburd also had a decent bit explaining the whole Simpaul Ticket or leave it controversy...

Ah sure alyuh never hear but the Haiti FIFA vote scandal...all who thought they know jack like he know the inside of we pocket...

Mighty England crush Paraguay
World Cup in the bag
by Janus Motsonius
The England football juggernaut thundered to a stunning victory on Saturday, in the process crushing a hapless Paraguay who could do nothing but stand and stare in wae and wonder at Sven's merciless sporting elite.

The 1-0 scoreline — courtesy of a virtuoso sixth-minute header by Carlos Gamarra — left few in any doubt of the World Cup's final outcome. "I'm going home now," admitted one shaken Brazil fan, his maracas hanging silently at his side. "I can't honestly see us finding a way through a team of such international class."

His sentiments were echoed by a visibly-shocked Argentinian. "Eriksson's plan was simply brilliant," he gasped. "Let the opposition score for you, then pull everyone back behind the half-way line for 80 minutes. Genius."

Football pundits were mostly united in similar praise for England's masterplan. "The way we totally dominated the match by knocking the ball around the midfield and then passing it back to the goalkeeper if things got a bit hairy was the best single team performance I've ever seen," one admitted.

Another, however, advised caution. "We need a back-up plan in the unlikely event that another team gets lucky. Obviously, there's no point taking the ball and attacking the opposition defence head-on: nobody ever scores by dribbling his way into the box and slamming the ball in the net. I'd suggest we rely entirely on David Beckham's ability to put the ball into the air where, in the confusion, someone's head might make advantageous contact. It's always worked in the past."

In Dortmund, meanwhile, plucky Sweden were celebrating a historic 0-0 draw against much-fancied Trinidad and Tobago. "It's brilliant, this is what footballing dreams are all about," said a tearful Freddie Ljungberg.  ;D

Football / Soca Warriors/Strike Squadplayer by player comparison
« on: December 22, 2006, 06:50:27 PM »
This is for some of the older heads over here. We have talked a lot about the Strike Squad and compared with the Soca Warriors over and over again but always in very general terms.

I would like those who have the knowledge to give an exact diagnostic of each team player by player. In other words, comparison of centre forwards with centre forwards, withdrawn forwards with withdrawn forwards, full backs with full backs and centre backs with centre backs etc etc.
In other words no comparing yorke back in 1989 with Yorke in 2006, seeing that they didn't play the same position for most of the series. Also, it would be better to judge players on their form at the moment and not what they became or were. Eventually we can even compare systems...

At then end it isn't about deciding which was better or not better, but just noting their strengths and weaknesses

Strike Squad Players
(taken from the list of those having taken part in the whole world cup qualifying):

Michael Maurice, Dexter Francis, Clayton Morris, Brian Williams, Hayen Waterman ,Marlon Morris, Marvin Faustin, Elliott Allen, Hutson Charles, Dexter Skeene, Philibert Jones, Kerry Jamerson, Leonson Lewis, Errol Lovell, Ron la Forest, Geoffrey Lake, Floyd Lawrence, Richard Chinapoo, Hutson Charles, Russell Latapy, Anton Corneal, Earl Carter, Dwight Yorke,Ricky Nelson, Maurice Alibey, Leonson Lewis, Dexter Lee, Leroy Spann,  .

(I'll let those who know better define the precise positions of each one)
Soca Warriors
(23 selected for the world cup plus the other major players of the hex under Beenie):

Shaka Hislop, Kelvin Jack, Clayton Ince, Christopher Birchall, Carlos Edwards, Stern John, Dennis Lawrence, Brent Sancho, Densill Theobald, Dwight Yorke, Cyd Gray, Avery John, Aurtis Whitley, Cornell Glen, Kenwyne Jones, Collin Samuel, Marvin Andrews, Atiba Charles, Ian Cox, Russell Latapy, Jason Scotland, Evans Wise, Anthony Wolfe, Scott Sealy, Anthony Rougier, Silvio Spann, Angus Eve.

For the Bajan bredren...

Sheffield United are prepared to let eight players leave Bramall Lane in the January transfer window.
Paul Ifill, Steve Kabba, Geoff Horsfield, Chris Lucketti, Alan Wright, Neil Shipperley and David Unsworth can go permanently or on loan.

Injury-plagued midfield man Li Tie is only available on loan.

Shefffield United boss Neil Warnock said: "All these players are experienced campaigners and will no doubt be in demand."

Warnock is keen to see Chinese international Li Tie, signed from Everton in the summer, in action in the Premiership.

He has finally recovered from a ripped thigh muscle which has restricted him to just one Carling Cup appearance since his arrival in the summer.

Walsall win last saturday (25th november) but somebody finally score on Ince in the league. D streak done  :'(

Walsall 2-1 Notts County
Top-of-the table Walsall maintained their seven point lead with this win.
Striker Tommy Wright, on loan from Barnsley for two months, drove home Mark Kinsella's pass to put the Saddlers in front on 27 minutes.

Just before the break Walsall went 2-0 ahead when Dean Keates' free-kick sailed straight into the net as Ian Roper tried to reach it with his head.

County pulled a goal back in the 72nd minute when keeper Clayton Ince allowed Ian Ross' free-kick to squirm in.

Hard luck dey Ince but nothing ent stopping you from making another 8 game clean streak.  ;D

Walsall for league 1 !!!!!
