Trinidad-born teenager Kerron Clement has broken Michael Johnson's decade-old indoor world record for the 400m.
The 19-year-old was competing for the University of Florida at the National Collegiate Athletic Association indoor championships in Arkansas.

Clement, who is the world junior 400m hurdles champion, clocked a time of 44.57 seconds, obliterating Johnson's time of 44.63 seconds.

It was the second big success in a week for the teenager, who helped his university team set a new NCAA 4x400m relay record the previous weekend.

"I can't describe how I feel," he said after the race.

"When I crossed the line, I wanted to cry, that was my first reaction" he said. "It was so overwhelming - breaking Michael Johnson's record. I guess it's mine now."

The record-breaking athlete who left Trinidad at 13 when his family migrated to the United States has been hailed by athletics pundits as a possible successor to the current World and Olympic champion, Felix Sanchez.

Switched allegiances

Clement's achievements have been lauded in the Trinidad media, but the pride will be tinged with disappointment that he has opted to run for the United States.

Trinidad sports journalist Kwame Laurence told BBC Caribbean Radio that Clement had in the past expressed interest in running for the country of his birth, but that athletics officials had "missed the boat".
I don't think there's anything that Trinidad would be able to offer that can lure him back because certainly, the big sport equipment giants like Nike and Adidas would be chasing Kerron with some attractive offer.
"Maybe we felt we didn't need to go after him because he already declared his intention to run for us but the United States certainly wasn't going to sleep on a talent like Kerron Clement particularly since that talent was spotted and developed in the United States

I still hope kerron changes his mind

this is the reson he does not want to run for us savannah

Ato Boldon wants Trinidad and Tobago to be a world power in track and field. And the retired sprint star is willing to play his part in helping the country attain that status.

"I don't have any illusions of coaching anybody. There are people who do a good job coaching-wise, people who have a great passion for the sport, people like Mr (Edwin) Skinner, who really care about the athletes. My role should be to help. Right now, what we lack is people who know what it takes to succeed in modern-day track and field. I'm the piece of the puzzle that's missing."

Boldon, though, will not be part of any programme that is not properly supported, financially and otherwise.

"If they want to put a budget, where we can have some money to help these Olympians of the future, then fine. Failing that, I'll look elsewhere to help and just deal with whatever the repercussions are, as to who doesn't like it. At this stage, I don't have the patience to go through the usual Trini drama. I would like to help my country because my country has given me a lot, but not at the cost of my happiness.

"It's not only financial backing," an indignant Boldon continued, "but some support at a high level. A very good example is Kerron Clement. I talked to him at the US trials, and it's not that he doesn't love Trinidad, but there's such an air and a legacy of a total lack of efficiency. Even though he may not make a US team in life, Clement prefers to represent the US rather than deal with the headache of Trinidad."

But Boldon is confident that T&T's negative image can be changed.

"Anybody who is serious about track and field being a beacon for us on the world stage can do something about it. And not just when it's election time or when the next Darrel Brown shows up. If they're going to be serious about it, like countries like Jamaica and the Bahamas, then certainly I'm interested and would be willing to sit down and talk to whoever. If not, don't complain if I go and do it for somebody else."

The quadruple Olympic medallist told the Express that if T&T does not accept his offer, Canada could become the beneficiary of his knowledge and experience.

"Canada has been embarrassed by their last two Olympic showings, and they want to put things together to make their track programme one to be reckoned with. I'm definitely interested in that. I still have a deep desire to help the sport and pass on some of the knowledge I have gained."

Boldon said that if T&T does respond positively to his offer, he will do everything possible to help the country's young athletes.

"But it's not something I'm going to do by myself. I think I can assemble the people who can do it. Some are Trinidadian and some are not."

The British Broadcasting Corporation's (BBC) coverage of the 1999 World Track and Field Championships in Seville, Spain featured a Trinidadian voice. Forced out of the meet by a hamstring injury, Boldon changed roles and was part of the commentary team.

"I got good reviews for my work."

The 1997 200 metres world champion is hoping to renew his relationship with the BBC.

"Michael Johnson is reportedly not at the BBC anymore, doing track commentary. So that's something I'm definitely interested in; that's something we're going to try to work out as soon as possible."

Boldon said that HSI sprinters Maurice Greene and Inger Miller, coach John Smith and manager Emanuel Hudson all tried to convince him to shelve his retirement plans.

"None of them were convincing enough for me to sway."

The seventh fastest human being in history was, therefore, not among the athletes who turned up for the first day of HSI's off-season training programme, on Monday, November 1.

"Never before had I missed the first day of practice, so it felt a little weird. It may even be enough for me to say okay, I'm going to work out with them a little bit, just so I can begin to take this off-season weight off," Boldon ended. "I'm now about 200 pounds."

Norville is back playing

WINTRY conditions had cast doubt on whether this fixture would even begin, such was the speed at which the sleet and snow blew across Vicarage Road in the hours before kick-off.

However, the swirling snow failed to settle on the playing surface and both teams took to the field with only a sprinkling of snow beneath their boots.

Terry Bullivant's side boasted all the first-team experience on show, with players such as Paul Mayo, Jack Smith, Lloyd Doyley and Ashley Young all having racked up significant match minutes in the Hornets first team.

Brynjar Gunnarsson also started in the centre of midfield as he continues to build match fitness, and Alec Chamberlain returned in goal.

However, it was the Foxes who broke through after only five minutes and scored through Louis Dodds, firing low to Chamberlain's left from the edge of the penalty area. The ball had rebounded back into the path of the striker after a clearance from the Watford defence deflected off a Leicester body.

The Hornets seemed dead and buried by the youthful resilience of the visiting Foxes until Ben Herd popped up in the right place at the right time on 88 minutes to smash a right-footed volley past Peter Akman from all of 25 yards.

Once play resumed after Dodds' opener, left-winger Adam Wykes got the next chance on goal, making himself available for Dodds to find inside the area. His sliced shot was just wide of Chamberlain's top corner.

On the quarter-hour Anthony McNamee's floated cross over the six-yard box was begging to be struck on the volley by Omari Coleman, but on his unfavoured right foot the striker opted to take the ball down and found Toumani Diagouraga, whose cross-shot cleared the Leicester goal and behind for a goal kick.

The game wasn't much of a spectacle over the next 15 minutes, with neither side making consistent inroads into their opposition penalty area. The best chance to level for the Hornets came from a McNamee free-kick on 28 minutes, which bounced in the area after several players missed the header. It needed the slightest touch to divert past Foxes stopper Conrad Logan but one was not forthcoming, the ball spinning behind into the Vicarage Road end.

Watford survived a penalty appeal four minutes later when Chris O'Grady burst past Jack Smith, forcing Chamberlain to go to ground at the feet of the City striker. O'Grady appeared to have pushed the ball past Chamberlain inside the area before he was brought down by the veteran - referee Miller looked to his linesman who did not flag and Watford resumed play with a goal kick.

Another good chance to level fell to Diafutua from Young's right-sided corner on 35 minutes. The French striker was forced to head the ball back whilst going away from goal and turned it over the bar from close range.

Leicester centre-back Alan Sheehan tried an audacious 35-yard volley as the half wound down. The ball sat up perfectly for the defender to strike, executing a superb volley only to see his shot whistle just wide of Chamberlain's left post.

The Hornets made a half-time substitution, with Ryan Gilligan coming on to replace Young on the right flank.

Ten minutes in Dodds again showed his ability when right-back Liam Norvall found him at the top of the penalty area - a neat turn later and the forward's shot through the legs of Doyley had Chamberlain scrambling across his goal, the ball going just wide.

Dodds was behind a fierce strike from another smart turn a few minutes later, this time freeing himself from the attentions of Smith before firing into the chest of Chamberlain from 15 yards.

Jason Norville, on as a 62nd minute sub, almost had an instant impact when he found the ball at his feet and a clear run at goal - Foxes custodian Logan did well to smother the ball at the feet of the advancing Trinidadian forward.

The Hornets then spurned two cast-iron chances to equalise. First Paul Mayo found himself in acres of space to the left of the six-yard box from Smith's lofted ball but the defender's attempted piledriver into the bottom corner was hit squarely across the box. Norville picked up on the ball, and on his right foot, placed a low shot inside the near post to which Logan got down quickly to turn behind.

Chamberlain's positioning had to be spot on at the edge of his area with six minutes remaining, snatching the ball away from sub Ashley Chambers as the diminutive forward bore down on goal.

With only two minutes left an equaliser came from an unlikely source - right-back Ben Herd. The young defender found himself in the right place to latch onto a half-cleared ball from the City defence and unleashed a thunderbolt of a volley from fully 25 yards. The sheer force of the effort took it through a ruck of bodies and left sub keeper Akman with absolutely no chance as the ball rocketed past him into the net.

McNamee tried to seal the win with another long-range effort, this time a curling strike on the run which had Akman worried until it cleared the crossbar by inches.

Watford: Chamberlain, Herd, Mayo, Gunnarsson (Ferrell 62), Doyley, Smith, Young (Gilligan HT), Coleman, Diafutua (Norville 62), Diagouraga, McNamee. Subs: Osborne, Grant.

Leicester: Logan (Akman 78), Norvall, Franklin, Dawson, Lycett, Sheehan, Porter, Wesolowski, O'Grady, Dodds, Wykes (Chambers 83). Subs: Goodwin, McKay, Payne.

Andre Boucardneeds consistent first team starts and he will improve. Barry Fry seems to be over looking the youngster and using him when other players are injured.
