Premiership Wigan are eyeing St Johnstone striker Collin Samuel. Wigan are on the lookout for a front player to replaced the disgraced Marlon King who was jailed for assaulting a woman last week.

Top target for them is reputed to be Espanyol’s hit-man Raul Tamudo. However, boss Roberto Martinez has also had scouts checking out Samuel.

Wigan already have former Saint Jason Scotland on their books. St Johnstone will be without both Steven Milne and Stuart McCaffrey for Saturday’s trip to Aberdeen.

However, boss Derek McInnes is hopeful Samuel will make it despite still being bothered by the knee injury which forced him to miss the cup win over Dundee United.

“We think Sammy will be back training either tomorrow or Friday,” said McInnes yesterday.

Saints have dropped their interest in a trio of trialists who featured in Tuesday’s closed doors clash with Kilmarnock.

“We won’t be taking the matter further because they wouldn’t have improved us,” explained the manager.

Meanwhile, speculation was mounting last night that Saints’ midfielder Murray Davidson is in line for a shock full international call-up when the Scotland squad is announced this morning for the friendly with Wales.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is tracking Espanyol striker Raul Tamudo. Martinez needs extra firepower in attack, having lost Marlon King.

Wigan scouts have checked out Tamudo in recent weeks. He has been attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs.

Signing a new striker will be a priority for Martinez when the transfer window reopens in January.

Martinez said: "We are now one striker short. The squad is one body less and it is important we address that situation.

"We are following different players in different leagues and different markets.

"In the long-term, we need to make sure not just regarding the striking position we keep improving, but helping the players we already have here become strikers."

Wigan have also been linked with St Johnstone striker Colin Samuel. The Trinidad & Tobago inter- national is out of contract next summer.

He is a pacy front man who previously played for Falkirk.

Huw Jenkins says that the Swans will let Jason Scotland go on a free next summer - but only if they have to

The Swansea City Chairman insists that the club will not be held to ransom over any wage demands and will only pay any player what they believe he is worth.

He also insists that he will not be drawn into paying more than that worth just because the player may have a value on his head within the transfer market.

Scotland has got one year left on his current Liberty Stadium deal and has already been linked with moves to Middlesbrough and Fulham after an impressive two years in South Wales.

Speaking to News of the World, Jenkins said "Jason is contracted to us for another 12 months, we'll deal with his situation this summer.  We'll sit down with Jason and his agent and have a conversation about his future.   He's had a great season, scored lots of goals and made the Championship team of the year.

"Jason's agent is now looking to get him a better deal and that's only natural.   We'll talk to Jason when the time is right.

"He's been a terrific signing for Swansea, nobody will argue with that.  He's our top goalscorer so of course we want to retain him for as long as we can but there's no rush to do anything.

"If we can't agree a deal, he can walk away at the end of his contract - that's what we did with Andy Robinson last year.

"We're not going to agree to a player's demands because he might be worth something in the transfer market.  That's not the way we operate.  We do what we think is right for Swansea City.

"A player could leave the club for nothing because his contract is coming to an end but we don't take that into consideration when we discuss wages.  Jason might leave at the end of next season on a free transfer but we could be going into the Premier League.

"Our priority at the moment is to bring in some new players.   We're looking to strengthen the squad ready for next season.  We've got to get stronger each year.  When Roberto has brought in a few new signings then we will sit down and talk to Jason."

Ivan Sproule puts his recent improved performances are down to Stern John's advice.

The winger earned the man of the match award as City defeated Crystal Palace 1-0 at Ashton Gate, coming off the back of terrorising the Watford defence on Boxing Day.

And Ivan also welcomed news his on-loan Southampton team-mate would be staying at City until the end of the campaign.

Ivan told Bristol City World: "Having Stern (John) in the team has helped me and has helped Nicky (Maynard) as well, as I'm sure he'd tell you.

"People say I've turned the corner a wee bit and I have to say, Stern spoke to me about the way I was playing, and he's got the experience so I've listened. I think he's put me on the right track.

"It's great to know that Stern will be with us until the end of the season because he's a great player and another lad that fits well into our changing room.

"He's got bundles of ability as everyone can see. If he keeps playing like that and I keep playing like that hopefully we can continue to climb up the table."

Ivan, who rattled the post against Palace, also believes confidence is key for a winger.

"Every player is the same with confidence but on top of that as a winger you need a run in the team," added the Northern Irishman.

"When you get a run in the side it's about producing the goods. Of late I think the whole team has been.

"We've tinkered with the formation and I've been playing to the right of a front, which reminds me of my old Hibs days. That's when I was excelling in my football and at the moment it seems to be coming out again."

Sunderland recall Carlos.

Sunderland have recalled Carlos Edwards from his loan spell with Wolves. The loan agreement has ended with immediate effect and Edwards could feature in Sunderland's game against West Ham at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

Edwards joined the Championship club, managed by ex-Black Cats boss Mick McCarthy, at the start of October, originally for three months, but Sunderland have taken up an option to recall him early.

Edwards has played six games for Wolves who currently lead the Championship by six points. The winger featured in Trinidad & Tobago's 3-0 win over Cuba in a World Cup qualifier in Port of Spain last night.

Kenwyne Jones has flown back to the Caribbean to attend a family funeral.

The Sunderland striker, in the final stages of his rehab for a knee injury, was given permission to travel yesterday and will stay in Trinidad until next weekend.

It has been agreed that Jones will train with the Trinidad and Tobago national squad as they prepare for Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Guatemala and the Black Cats have sent a club physio with the striker to assist his work.

Roy Keane, Sunderland's manager, confirmed: "There has been a death in his family and he has gone over with our best wishes.

"One of our medical staff has travelled with him, to make sure his recovery goes to plan because every day is vital at this stage.

"Kenwyne will be back next weekend and hopefully, then, he will have a good week's training with the first team and after that he'll look for a reserve game."

Jones hurt his knee when playing for T&T in a friendly against England in June. He has pencilled in Sunderland's reserve game against Wigan later this month as a comeback date.

Crewe are believed to be in the hunt to sign giant Swansea defender Dennis Lawrence on loan.

First team coach Steve Holland has been looking for a defender all summer and the former Wrexham defender has been a long term transfer target for the Railwaymen and they are looking to tie up a short term deal in time for Saturday's match at Bristol Rovers.

The 6ft 7 defender is out of favour at Swansea and it is understood that Roberto Martinez is keen for the Trinidad and Tobago international to get some games under his belt.

Holland told BBC Radio Stoke "We have made some progress this week and we have a player who ticks all the boxes and we have to see how that evolves over the week, its in its early stages"

Sunderland have received an enquiry for Carlos Edwards, reportedly from Sheffield Wednesday, while Anthony Stokes could also be loaned out.

Black Cats boss Roy Keane is prepared to listen to offers for Trinidad and Tobago international winger Edwards.

The 29-year-old former Wrexham and Luton star has not featured for the first team since coming off the bench in the 1-0 home defeat by Liverpool on the opening day of the Premier League season.

"There has been interest in Carlos and I'll have a chat with him," Keane told the Shields Gazette.

Championship outfit Wednesday have previously been linked with a move for Edwards.

Keane is also prepared to loan out Republic of Ireland international Stokes, whose only outing so far was a half-hour stint in the 3-0 home defeat by Manchester City.

However, the 20-year-old, who had a prolific spell at Falkirk while contracted to Arsenal in 2006, has impressed Keane with his application in training.

"I've had no calls about Stokesy, but I'm open-minded with some of the players on the fringes, and if a club wants to ring up and ask about Stokesy, we'll have a chat," added Keane.

"He's keeping his head down and he's working hard.

"I think it would have helped if he'd been away with Ireland Under-21s last week.

"He would have benefited from that because he needs games."

Kenwyne Jones and Carlos Edwards are set to miss Wednesday's international game in the Caribbean. Jones missed Sunderland's 1-0 win at Aston Villa after picking up a virus earlier in the week and Edwards has a groin strain.

The winger started at Villa Park despite suffering the injury in training on Wearside yesterday but he was substituted in the 67th minute. Both players were named in the Trinidad and Tobago squad for their friendly against Jamaica in Kingston on Wednesday.

Roy Keane, Sunderland's manager, confirmed: "Kenwyne didn't train yesterday, he has a virus and could not travel.

"I spoke to the doctor and he told me that Kenwyne was not right. The temptation is always to take a risk but it would not have been fair. I doubt whether it's a 24 hour thing, it will be longer than that.

"Carlos has a groin injury which he picked up in training yesterday, he won't be fit to travel."

Danny Collins picked up a dead-leg in the win at Villa Park and Keane is hoping he is fit for Sunderland's game against West Ham at the Stadium of Light next week.
