Football / Paging TI, Rijsbergen comment on Jemmott.
« on: May 30, 2007, 08:34:39 AM »
Rijsbergen satisfied.
...but still looking for right Gold Cup combination.
By: Randy Bando.

Trinidad and Tobago national senior team head coach Wim Rijsbergen is not focused on just winning the quadrangular Digicel Shield, but is more interested in looking at his new charges as he heads into the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Addressing the media after T&T’s 1-0 win over Haiti on Monday Rijsbergen explained, “In a tournament like this there is always a prize and of course we are here to win it, but on the on the other side more importantly we are here to prepare for the Gold Cup.”
T&T’s lone item came courtesy a strike from W Connection’s Andre Toussaint who featured as a second period substitute.
Rijsbergen continued to explain that he is looking for the right combination of players heading into this summer’s Gold Cup.
“This team and the last team we had in the Caribbean Cup are two completely different teams. We now have eight different guys in our starting line-up and in the next match we still have some guys that we would try even when we go to Honduras before the Gold Cup,” he said adding, “The group we have now wants to win the Gold Cup tournament and even without much time to prepare the guys are in good spirits.”
“I have explained to the guys that we are looking for the best team and everyone would get a fair chance to show what they can do.”
Overall the Dutchman expressed satisfaction in his team’s performance against Haiti to move to the final of the Digicel Shield on Wednesday.
“I am very satisfied with the performance of the team although there is always room for improvement.”
“It was a good goal by Toussaint, Mc Farlane came in and did a good job and hopefully we see all the guys doing a good job and lining up for the Gold Cup,” said Rijsbergen.
“Haiti is a very tough team and I was very happy that we came out and got the results although some of the guys are very tired because of the amount of work we did over the last couple of days.”
Trinidad and Tobago would now face Mexico’s Pan American squad after the South Americans defeated Caribbean neighbors St Vincent 8-7 on penalties in the first match on Monday.
According to Rijsbergen W Connection’s Courts Pro Bowl winning goal keeper Jan Michael Williams was rested for the Haiti match because of some knee problems he was having and they didn’t want to aggravate injury.
Commenting on Superstar Rangers midfielder Kerwyn Jemmot who is ruled out of the Gold Cup, the national coach believes it’s no big loss, “Jemmot is just one player and nobody is bigger than the team. It’s bad for Jemmot and that’s the same for Osei Telesford and for Nigel Daniel who are also injured. It’s impossible to get Jemmot ready for the Gold Cup but we have other guys to replace him,” he enlightened.

Football / Question concerning the EPL.
« on: May 14, 2007, 05:47:37 PM »
For argument sake guys, lets say you owned an average new club in the EPL with no players onboard. You were given Ł70 million to buy players and staff (only), who would you buy. Remember, this is a new club, starting fresh and does not have a big financial budget.

Football / Best game by Arnold Dwarika.
« on: March 13, 2007, 05:09:46 AM »
I taught he had a great game vs Jamaica on the 30th of June 2001 and Jamaica again on June 28 1998. Against USA on November 11 2001 and in the 2001 Gold Cup also he was excellent.

Cant remember him to good in his school days though.

Boy, did he waste his God given talent. We really loose good players to liming, smoking, and drinking. Jemmott, Dwarika, Highley, now Whitley and it seems Silvio slacking off to.. etc... I believe players have to come out of T&T the society is not good especially the youths when the only recreation is liming and drinking. Our government should invest in an Athletic College/University and some water parks and so on.

Anyhow, back to Dwarika, I really taught he could have been a classics for T&T. Anyone have the T&T vs El Salvador game from the 1996 Gold Cup and the USA one also ?

Trinidad's W Connection upsets Mexico's Chivas.

Late goals from Jose Luis Seabra and Earl Jean gave 10-man W Connection a surprising 2-1 win over Mexico's Chivas in a CONCACAF Champions Cup first-leg quarterfinal on Tuesday.
Caribbean champion Connection was expected to struggle against the 11-time Mexican champ. After 19 minutes it seemed doomed when Trinidad and Tobago international goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams saved a shot from striker Sergio Santana outside the area, earning him an automatic red card.
But Chivas didn't score until the 60th when Mexico international Omar Bravo headed in a left cross at Manny Ramjohn Stadium.
Connection skipper Jean replied with a looping header in the 78th to equalize, then the inexperienced Trinidadian side stunned Chivas eight minutes later when Seabra was found in space on the left edge of the box and he thumped an unstoppable low drive past Chivas keeper Ernesto Michel. Connection will take its advantage into the return leg at Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara on Feb. 28. W Connection FC becomes the first Caribbean team to win a Champions’ Cup game since CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh (TRI) defeated the Chicago Fire (USA) by a score of 5:2 in the Quarterfinal Series on 17 March 2004.

Seabra rescues 10-man Connection on return.
...to draw first blood against Mexicans.
By: Randy Bando (ttproleague.com).

Vibe CT 105 W Connection’s Brazilian midfielder Jose Luis Seabra returned to the playing field with a bang, as he created a goal and scored another to help his team to a nail-biting 2-1 win against Mexican Club Chivas in the first leg quarter final match of the CONCACAF Club Championship at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium on Tuesday night.
Seabra who spent the entire 2006 season off the field due to a knee injury proved to be a masterstroke by Coach Stuart Charles Fervier who introduced the player as a second half substitute as the ‘Savonnetta Boys’ trailed a goal down with ten men.
In the early stages of the well contested encounter W Connection lost 2006 Pro League Player of the Year, goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams to a direct red card when he was forced to scramble the ball outside his area after a poor back pass by defender Devon Drayton.
But it was the home team that had the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium in high spirits when in the 3rd minute Andrei Pacheco converted Christian Viveros’ pass into the net but to the dismay of the W Connection fans it was disallowed for an offside.
Connection continued to apply the pressure and had another promising build-up in the 11th minute on the right side but Hughton Hector’s service into the Chivas area was too long and proved to be harmless for goalkeeper Ernesto Michel.
Chivas then turned things around as they controlled the pace of the game. Coach Jose Manuel De La Torre utilized the experience of key players such as Captain Ramon Morales, Omar Bravo and Sergio Santana.
In the 15th minute Chivas’ Roberto Rivera saw his 23 yards effort sail over as they tried for the early advantage.
With the persistent determination to get the early goal Chivas recorded the first yellow card of the encounter when Bravo received the booking by Jamaican Referee Courtney Campbell for a harsh challenge on Christian Viveros in the 18th minute.
Two minutes later the Mexicans had an even better effort when Bravo played Santana neatly inside the Connection area but his low attempt flashed past goal keeper Jan Michael Williams’ far post to the relief of the home supporters.
On the 20th minute mark the horror arrived as W Connection lost inspirational player and goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams. Williams received a straight red card when he scrambled a great save outside his area to deny Sergio Santana a goal after defender Devon Drayton played a wayward back pass forcing Coach Fervier to make an early change.
Second choice goalkeeper Kerwin Beckles was then introduced at the expense of striker Dwight Scott in the 21st minute.
Beckles was called to action immediately with a low block to reject Chivas’ Morales 19-yard free kick.
Morales continued to be a trouble maker in the Connection area when he relaxed a neat pass outside the area for defender Diego Martinez to have a go on goal but the defender’s effort sailed over bar.
With W Connection down to ten men, Chivas did most of the attacking, but the W Connection defence was doing enough with defender Elijah Joseph marshalling his teammates well to deny the Mexicans any close range shots on goal.
However the more experienced Mexicans were having trouble to penetrate Connection’s defence and Coach Jose Manuel De La Torre decided it was time to introduce another national player, Alberto Medina came on for Antonio Patlan in the 42nd minute.
Less than a minute on the field, substitute Medina squandered a great opportunity just on top of the six-yard area created by teammate Bravo but he fumbled wide.
W Connection on the other end had their first legal shot on goal when Brazilian William Da Silva Oliviera had a 23 yard attempt easily parried by goal keeper Michel in the closing stages of the first period and the Savonetta Boys held on for a goalless score at the half.
Chivas returned even more aggressive in the second period as they took the game into the Connection half of the field.
In the 52nd minute Morales managed a 24 yard attempt but saw it flash harmlessly over goal keeper Beckles’ crossbar.
One minute later Beckles was in action again when he easily collected a tame close range header by Roberto Rivera after a neat cross was played inside by Manoel Sol from the right side.
Goal keeper Beckles also had to make a couple of other saves just before the 60 minute mark. In the 58th minute he was composed enough to collect after substitute Medina raced into his area and had a low shot and in the 59th he made a spectacular diving save to deny a deflected shot by Diego Martinez.
Soon afterwards W Connection’s Coach Stuart Charles Fervier decided to bring on the experienced Jose Luis Seabra who recently came off rehabilitation on his injured knee at the expense of Andrei Pacheco.
Less than a minute after his appearance, Chivas went ahead with the opening goal. Mexican Omar Bravo unmarked headed past goal keeper Beckles in the 61st minute at far post when he met a Martinez crossball for the 1-0 lead.
In quick reaction the W Connection coach boosted his teams front line and made a technical change replacing midfielder Hughton Huctor with striker Andre Toussaint in the 65th minute.
In the 72nd minute W Connection’s captain Earl Jean saw his powerful low shot from outside the area deflected for a corner.
Coach Fervier was then rewarded for his great tactical move when W Connection equalized in the 79th minute to send the home fans wild. Substitute Jose Luis Seabra weaved his way past two Chivas players before the ball rebound into the air as striker Earl Jean did well to win the ball ahead of goal keeper Michel to head in for the 1-1 equalizer.
With the match now hanging in the balance, the Mexicans showed more signs of frustrations seeing players Diego Martinez and Alberto Medina both receiving bookings, minutes apart.
On the 86th minute mark Brazilian substitute Seabra rose to glory when he collected a pass on the left side from another substitute Andre Toussaint created room for himself to blast a left footed shot well out of goal keeper Michel’s reach to put the home team ahead 2-1 as the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium broke into a Carnival atmosphere.
The ‘Savonetta Boys’ maintained their advantage until the end against the Mexicans Champions to draw first blood in the first leg of the quarter final round of the CONCACAF Club Championship.
Vibe CT 105 W Connection will now have to travel to Mexico to face Chivas in the second leg on February 28th as they hope to maintain the scores in their favor and look towards moving into the semifinals of the CONCACAF Tournament for the first time in the club’s history.

Chivas Coach blames wasted opportunities for loss.
By: Randy Bando (ttproleague.com).

Coach Jose Manuel De La Torre of the Mexican League Champions Chivas says his team’s failure to capitalize on both their goal scoring chances and the fact that the Pro League Club Vibe CT 105 W Connection were down to 10 men in their first leg encounter of the CONCACAF Club Championship quarterfinal match accounted for their loss.
Speaking to the media through an interpreter after his team’s 2-1 loss against the TT Pro League Club, De La Torre said, “We had the numerical advantage and we didn’t take advantage of that. We also didn’t take advantage of the opportunities that were presented to us during the game,” said the disappointed Mexican Coach.
W Connection lost their goal keeper Jan Michael Williams on a red card just 20 minutes into the match and came from behind in the thrilling encounter to beat Chivas 2-1.
Chivas fielded four of their Mexican national team players out of the six currently in their squad. National striker Omar Bravo scored the lone item for the Mexican Club.
De La Torre also recognizes the quality of players that are at W Connection, but believes his team should have done much better.
“W Connection has some good players who play at a really good level but I believe we should have performed at a much higher level,” he said.
Chivas and Vibe CT 105 W Connection would meet again in two weeks time on the 28th of February in Guadalajara, Mexico in the second leg of the quarterfinal of the CONCACAF Club Championship and Coach Jose Manuel De La Torre is very confident that his team’s style of play would get them through to the semifinals.
“We have our system of play and this is our style of play so we are not going to change it. We are going to continue to use our best players in the next match and we would see how our opponents can react to it again,” ended the Chivas Head coach.
Fervier: Connection not celebrating yet.
By: James Saunders (ttproleague.com).

W Connection coach Stuart Charles Fervier has taken his team’s amazing 2-1 come from behind victory over Mexican Champs Chivas of Guadalajara in stride and with a bit of caution.
The St Lucia born coach described the win by his side who were reduced to ten men as early as the 20th minute after goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams handled the ball outside the area as a massive victory for his team not only because of the result but because of the level at which their Spanish speaking opponents play.
However, at the post match press conference the w connection coach exercised watchfulness and caution saying that the club was not yet ready to celebrate just yet.
“It is just halftime we are only at the 90 minute mark; we take a 2-1 lead to Mexico and of course our main objective is to win, but we still have to keep our feet on the ground because we still have another 90 minutes to play”, Fervier said.
The coach however noted that his side is in no way intimidated by the looming prospect of facing the Mexicans at home in Guadalajara, an area prominently known for its passionate die-hard and vocal football supporters saying instead that they are excited and looking forward to it.
“We are really happy to be going to Mexico to play in that sought of atmosphere because we have worked hard to be here and you grow up seeing this kind of thing on TV and dream of these moments so we are really quite happy”.
Fervier further added that the away goal the Mexicans gained was not really important to him and does not give his club a disadvantage going into the return leg.
“Our main goal was to win at home and take a victory into Guadalajara, if we go there and do the same then I believe that we will have no problems.”
The St Lucian went on to thank the fans who came out to support W Connection and congratulated his players for the win despite the odds stacked up against them, heaping loads of praise on outstanding Brazilian midfielder Jose Luiz Seabra who came off the bench in his first appearance after an eight month injury layoff to create the first goal of the match and score a magnificent second to secure victory for the ‘Savontetta Boys’.
“Jose has always been a quality player, even though I still believe that he is far from his normal form and not in shape to play 90 minutes, because of his quality he was able to decide the game in one moment”, the coach pointed out.
He ended by saying that he was especially proud of his clubs accomplishment because it augurs well for the image of the Pro league which he says has been “cried down” by detractors in recent times.
“We are glad to prove that there is quality here in this league despite what certain individuals have claimed and we are going to represent the league and the country to the best that we can”.

Football / T&T U-17 team needs to start prep.
« on: January 19, 2007, 06:05:46 AM »
What are we waiting for ? Corneal should focus on this team and not worry about the senior team let Wim run the show, April isn't far, we need to get games under our belt.

Bora begins work with U-17s

Newly appointed technical director of Jamaica's football, Velibor 'Bora' Milutinovic, participated in his first official training session with a national outfit yesterday at the National stadium east field, when he went through the paces with the national Under-17 team for just over an hour.
The five-time World Cup coach watched national Under-17 head coach David Hunt take his squad through their paces for the first half hour of the session before deciding to lace up his boots.
The veteran coach questioned the youngsters on their technical abilities and used a few drills to demonstrate his points.
It was a pleasant session for the young players, who all seemed to warm to his infectious personality. At the end of the session, he implored the players to dream of South Korea in June and of South Africa in 2010.
He conceded to the Observer that for now he just wants to share his experience with the youngsters.
'Since I've been here, people question if I am good or not good... They all want me to talk and talk, but all I want to do is share my experience with them (players) and let them see the joy in the game... Is this wrong?'
Meanwhile, coach Hunt was pleased to have the new TD share some of his experiences with the team. 'This is the second time he has come to a training session, but the first he has addressed the players. It was very good what he has to share, and how he communicates his coaching point was something different. So I know the players and myself will definitely benefit from this experience,' he said. Jamaica under 17 will play a warm up with Mexico. Group B takes place at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica and is composed of four teams joining the home side that includes Canada, Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago and USA from 18-26 April.

Hannibal Najjar summons players for training.
By: Shaun Fuentes.

Trinidad and Tobago Technical Director Hannibal Najjar has summoned ninety one players for the resumption of training this week.
Najjar, who led T&T through to next April final CFU Gold Cup qualifying round, returned from a brief stay in Missouri United States last Saturday.
Over the next few weeks leading up to the end of 2002, Najjar intends to look at several players of the various age groups as T&T prepares to finalize a final Senior and Under 23 teams for the CFU Gold Cup qualifiers and 2003 Olympic qualifiers respectively.
The first session is carded for St Mary's College this Thursday from 3pm and will continue for the remainder of the month at selected venues and times to be determined.
Najjar also mentioned the possibility of senior warm up matches in January against a visiting Chinese Professional club as well as a South American nation and Scottish club Dundee. He is also making attempts to get a warm-up encounter in the second week of February as well as three matches in March leading up to the Gold Cup qualifying tournament.
Included in the list called are Under 17 players as well as standouts from the recent Secondary Schools League including former Under 17 goalkeeper Marvin Phillip, Jerol Forbes, Princes Town SC's Linsie Sherwood, Lyndon Luke, Andre Pacheco, St Anthony's College's Ian McAuley, Keeron Benito, Roderick Anthony, Steve Sealey and Julius James. Also earning a recall in an attempt to have the him reacquainted with the national scene is former Under 17 striker Nkosi Blackman. Former National under 17 forward Adrian Nunez of Rawlin's College in the USA is also in the country and has been invited for training.
"While being away where I spent the time wrapping up matters and closing up shop and seeing about related matters to the development of the football here, I was able to make several contacts with individuals and organizations pertaining to our programme in terms of organizational development which should come first before we get into actual player development. I am due to make further visits to the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) later in December and the United States Youth Soccer Association," Najjar told TTFF Media.
"I am encouraging all the recommendations that I can get. The guys had to go back to their clubs so this was a perfect time to go back to the States and wrap matters up there. I have invited a large number for training before we close off for the Christmas during which time they will be given personal training programmes before we resume the second week in January.
"There are now eighty eight invitees and clearly we will be looking at more players as time goes along. We need to be making a statement to the nation, in particular the young people that they are going to be looked at an early enough stage where we can identify their skills firstly and concretize their personalities for the making of a national player and not wait until they are older where we maybe have complaints about some of the things they may be missing. I want to identify those young people very early and naturally they will understand their roles but by virtue of being exposed to and rubbing shoulders with the senior players who are in many ways still a young group, it will enhance their overall well being and create a sense of extra enthusiasm that I need from the young people. Having these young ones around will not hurt them and certainly will not hurt us. We will be not be allowing people to slip through the nets. We have talent and the days of when younger people used to be exposed to the big football has returned. We have sheltered this for too long. The only setback they may have is the physical readiness to be part of the senior team and therefore we will be having the on board but utilizing them in a sensible way," Najjar explained to TTFF Media.

Kevin Graham, Keyeno Thomas, Nigel Pierre, Andre Toussaint, Densill Theobald, Jeremy Delpino, Dale Saunders, Kerwyn Jemmott, Derek King, Hollis Browne (Joe Public).

What about Track & Field / Merlene Ottey runs for Slovenia ?
« on: August 19, 2006, 07:02:42 AM »
Didn't she run for Jamaica at senior level, can track and field change allegiance like that ?

An interesting question was posted to me at the weekend by someone who wanted to get my views on Jamaica-born Merlene Ottey, who competed for Slovenia at last week's European Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the age of 46. My reply was to simply state that, while I am not witness to Ms. Ottey's physical appearance, she can only be competing at championship level due to a solid physical foundation and her adherence to a disciplined training regimen. Still, to be on the international stage in track and field at the age of 46 is a huge achievement and, especially after making it to the women's 100m semifinals, Ms. Ottey should be applauded.

FOOTBALL BRIBES
FIFA President Sepp Blatter is under investigation by Swiss police for his role in a secret deal to repay over one million pounds sterling in bribes pocketed by football officials, according to a British television investigative report.
Amidst the fervour of the World Cup tournament in Germany, the BBC aired the expose on the organisation which monopolises world football.
The documentary on the BBC current affairs programme Panorama on Sunday was produced by English journalist Andrew Jennings who has clashed with FIFA vice president Jack Warner on several occasions.
Last month as Jennings attempted to interview Warner at Piarco International Airport, Warner physically pushed him away, claiming later that Jennings' microphone had struck him.
The video of the shoving incident also formed part of the documentary and included another incident in Rio Claro where Warner used obscene language during another attempt by Jennings to solicit comments on continued investigations into FIFA.
The 40-minute Panorama documentary revealed that bribes had been paid over a period of nearly 20 years to FIFA officials by a marketing company, ISL, now bankrupt.
ISL, set up in 1982 quickly acquired lucrative marketing and television rights to the Olympic Games, the World Athletics Championship and the football World Cup. The company collapsed in 2001. Receivers examining ISL's accounts found evidence of bribes.
The Panorama documentary said some officials after being discovered to have received bribes repaid monies to ISL. Others who refused were taken to court and a secret deal was worked out.
The documentary interviewed employees of ISL who confirmed that the company had paid bribes to FIFA officials over a period of 20 years.
ISL insiders told Panorama that the bribes were paid systematically-"like salaries" one said, through a secretive Liechtenstein foundation and an offshore bank in the Caribbean.
Swiss Investigating Magistrate Thomas Hildbrand, according to the Jennings documentary, is investigating the possibility that FIFA, and not the individual officials, has repaid some of the bribes accepted by its officials. FIFA president Blatter had denied all allegations regarding the scandal.
Jennings told the Express yesterday: "It is a fact that there's a major criminal investigation into FIFA and Blatter going on in Switzerland. It has been going on for the last three years."
The documentary which proffered several documents to support its investigation took five months to produce.
Jennings told the Express: "What I have always known is that the fans have never trusted FIFA. They know for simple reasons that every World Cup ticket on the street comes out of the back door of FIFA, because I don't print World Cup tickets."

Football / Hannibal Najjar !!!!
« on: January 30, 2006, 10:19:05 AM »
I saw this in Flex news achieve section. Can anyone clarify this....

RE: Hannibal Najjar’s most cherished moment as National, U/20 and U/17 Youth National Coach can be felt as he describes his years spent in the development of the likes of Dwight Yorke, Russell Latapy, Craig Demmin, Clayton Morris, Reynold Carrignton, Anthony Rougier, Lester Felician, Philbert Jones, Dywane Demmin, Mickey Trotman, Leonson Lewis, Hudson Charles and Dexter Francis to mention a few.

If this is true then I feel the TTFF should hire him as under 20 coach or Youth Development Coach ?

Football / FIFA yellow card rule sucks !!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: November 03, 2005, 03:17:10 PM »
All teams in the play-offs suffering from this yellow card situation, cards players recieved from since last year still paying the price even in a new qualifying phase, Sepp Blatter SUCKS !!!!!!!!!

Imagine Jlloyd Samuel is a BORN Trini and he cant play for T&T !!! and has never played for England at senior level, so this player stands a chance to lose out his international career forever because of this dum rule, unless he can break into the England squad and I cant see that happening now or the next 4 years [because me might be to old ?]. FIFA and there stupid windows and rules. Jack Warner needs to do something about this before he retires, then again he may take Blater's place one day.

Double hurdle for Hiddink's Australia.
By FIFAworldcup.com.

The last time Australia qualified for the FIFA World Cup™ finals was way back in 1974. And their debut in West Germany proved little more than a painful learning experience as they took an early flight home after earning only one point from a goalless draw against Chile following defeats by both East and West Germany.

But those Down Under with proclivities toward superstition will surely be considering the tournament's return to Germany a positive sign for the hopeful Socceroos. And since taking the helm in July, former Netherlands and Real Madrid coach and current PSV Eindhoven manager Guus Hiddink has players and supporters alike believing in miracles – and ignoring the memory of past disappointments.

As undisputed kings of Oceania, the Australians – who will leave the South Seas behind and move to the Asian Football Confederation regardless of what happens in their November showdown against Bahrain – have reached the inter-continental play-offs ahead of the last three finals. And each time, they have come up agonisingly short , their last loss coming at the hands of current adversaries Uruguay. Before that, they went down to Iran in 1997 and in the final run-up to USA 94 were knocked out by no less an opponent than Diego Maradona's Argentina.

History aside, Hiddink is renowned the world over for pulling off Cinderella-style surprises. As coach of co-hosts Korea Republic in 2002, he did the seemingly impossible by guiding the previously out-of-luck East Asians to the rarefied air of a FIFA World Cup semi-final. Little wonder Paulo Montero, Uruguay's tough centre-back and a veteran of Korea/Japan 2002, is unwilling to guarantee all will go the South Americans' way, claiming: "We have a 50-50 chance - no more, no less."

Injury woes
One thing likely to concern Hiddink, though, are the injuries that could yet put a sizeable dent into his squad come 12 November. Captain and talisman Craig Moore has been officially ruled out for both legs with a damaged hamstring. In addition to the loss of his inspirational on-field lieutenant, Hiddink will also have to wait on the fitness of Stan Lazaridis and Harry Kewell – both of whom have been hit hard by injuries over the past few seasons and are not sure to be 100 per cent.
"We have picked a squad that is flexible and will be able to adapt," Hiddink said in an attempt to keep spirits high. "This will be the most important thing across the two legs." And Hiddink can at least count on midfielder Tim Cahill's availability after he missed part of last month's training camp in the Netherlands and England after his club Everton refused to release him. "For me there was no way I'd miss a game for Australia," said the player.

The Australians will also be heartened that they are not the only ones with injury worries. Uruguay's first-choice goalkeeper Fabian Carini and his deputy Sebastian Vieri are both struggling for fitness, meaning the Celeste must either look to an untested third choice or take a chance on one of the injured pair.

Second leg in Sydney
Last time out, ahead of Korea/Japan 2002, Australia saw their 1-0 first-leg advantage overhauled on a tough return trip to passionate Montevideo and the fabled Centenario stadium. This time around, though, the 16 November second leg will be at home in Sydney, leaving the Socceroos with an advantage, according to Football Federation Australia president Frank Lowy. "We wanted to play the first game away and as luck has it that's what happened," he told FIFAworldcup.com.

With only four days between the first and second legs, Hiddink has hinted at resting a few key players in the first game in order to guarantee their freshness for the return. It is surely a gamble, but the Dutchman's instincts have been known to pay big dividends in the past.

Yellow cards will be another big concern as cautions from the previous round of play will carry over, leaving seven Socceroos in danger of missing the second leg if they pick up a card in what is bound to be a physical game in Montevideo. The seven in question are Cahill, Brett Emerton, Zeljko Kalac, Lucas Neill, John Aloisi, Vince Grella and Marco Bresciano.

Armstrong claims silver in Italy..Findlay third in Britain.
By: Kwame Laurence.

Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Aaron Armstrong snapped up silver in the men's 200 metres event, at the Sport Solidarieta meet, in Italy, on Sunday.
The Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Senior Track and Field Championship half-lap silver medallist clocked 20.56 seconds, at the Solidarieta meet, to finish just behind American Ray Edwards, who got to the line in 20.55.
Another American sprinter, Dirk Homewood, was a distant third, in 21.18.
On Saturday, at the Loughborough European Athletics Permit meet, in Great Britain, T&T's Mark Findlay bagged bronze in the men's 100m final in a hand-timed 10.4 seconds. Australian Patrick Johnson topped the field in 10.2, while British sprinter Daniel Plummer finished second in 10.3.
In the preliminary round, Findlay won heat one in 10.57 seconds to advance to the final as the sixth fastest qualifier. Johnson was the fastest of the qualifiers, clocking 10.30 to top heat two. Plummer was the winner of the third and final heat in 10.42.
Armstrong, who was third in the men's 100m final and first in the 200m final at last month's Sagicor National Open Championships, is part of the six-man 4x100m relay squad selected for national duty at the August 6-14 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Findlay, though, did not qualify for the 100m final at the National Championships, and was not chosen for the Helsinki trip.
Armstrong, Marc Burns, Jacey Harper and Darrel Brown combined for 4x100m gold at the CAC Senior Championships, in Nassau, Bahamas, two weekends ago, in a national and Championship record time of 38.47 seconds, the fastest time in the world this year.
The same quartet, as well as Kevon Pierre and Melvin Nero, have been selected for the World Championships.

Football / The Minister in the Ministry of Sports.

Flex ask me to post this for him guys, an e-mail that was sent... (any ideas or feedback)...

The Minister in the Ministry of Sports.
The honourable - Mr Roger Boynes.

Dear Sir.

We are increasingly bombarded with news of unemployment and alienation of our youths. Annually, in excess of six thousand students graduate from secondary and tertiary educational institutions in T & T. Their first priority, as was perhaps the case with the rest of us was to secure sustainable employment. Unfortunately, high academic grades as well as work experience is required by employers, making it literally impossible for almost seventy percent of the graduates to become employable. What then is the solution?

My proposal is to make all sporting disciplines professional so that the individual not only becomes actively involved in healthy activity, but also is associated with positive and motivational peers while earning income. To achieve this :

- Professional coaching is required from as early as age eight 8 to thirteen 13.

-This would result in increased employment opportunities for coaches and those who might aspire to this end.

- Those in this age group would be ably assisted by their coaches to become focused on which type of sport they might be best suited to excel at.

- Between the ages of fourteen(14) to seventeen(17), a semi-professional school league consisting of players in the various sporting disciplines could be established.

- This would augur well for healthy competition, thus presenting an opportunity for exceptional players to be chosen for the professional league.

- To promote healthy family and community activity, competitions should be scheduled for weekends.

- The various stadia across the Islands should be utilized for matches thereby promoting to the public so that ticket sales could increase.

- A percentage of proceeds of these ticket sales should be deposited with prize monies into an athletic fund to be utilized for educational requirements of the winners.

- The entire school body can become involved and support their athletes by designing and printing T-shirts, caps, banners, flags etc.

- This would serve to identify which school was represented by the most orderly and disciplined group. The players would be motivated by the support and prizes could be given for Most Disciplined Posse thereby developing in youths a consciousness for proper conduct.

- A professional league consisting of those players over the age of eighteen (18) who would have excelled in their various disciplines could then be formulated.

- These youths would be doing what they do best and earning incomes for it.

- We would become more supportive of our athletes because as a nation we would be more aware of their activities.

- Economic activity across the board would be generated and vision 2020 would be achieved. Increased use of our stadia would mean employment for maintenance personnel, administrators, promoters, taxi drivers, food vendors, manufacturers of sporting goods and accessories and the list goes on.

- Athletes in winners row would undoubtedly attract and warrant heavy sponsorship. Sponsors would be rewarded by firstly being associated with excellence in sports and secondly should be granted tax credits by the government to the value of their contribution.

- This would serve to increase sponsorship, hence increase funding for sporting activities, thereby making sports a viable income earning alternative to misconduct and criminal activity.
I hope these proposals would be favourably considered for implementation so as to achieve the desired end.

Sincerely.
EON FAZAL SHAH.
