Going forward, it is fairly evident that we need speed as well as power (i.e. ability to take singles and rotate the strike) in our batting if we want to stay relevant in 20/20 cricket.

This speed is crucial in other cricketing formats as well.

How Gibson et. al are not aware of this fact is frankly embarrassing.

Liverpool are now top of the league with a goal difference of +49, with only City boasting a better goal difference.

I am happy, but it goes without saying that it would be foolish for Liverpool to start thinking about the title.

Tottenham was quite toothless though.

My friend who supports Spurs must be beside himself; nine goals conceded by the team from North London against the Reds.

So another result with huge ramifications for the top half of the table. Crystal Palace have recorded an improbable victory against Chelsea.

Thus, City can go second, Liverpool can go top, or Arsenal's faint title hope could be infused with some form of life if they beat the citizens later today.

Well, on the original topic of the thread, it looks like Green could be a great addition to American football (i.e. soccer). I do not think the German footballing administrative hierarchy will lose too much sleep over Green's choice of national team representation.

What was done was done for the greater good of humanity, when subjects and verbs fail to agree there is a threat to syntactic harmony.  Draconian as it may seem, redaction was preferred over reaction, as these pre-emptive measures will prevent the deployment of Weapons of Parse Destruction against our community.

Eh???  ???
So you are saying that revision of the grammatically offensive topic title is desirable in order to preserve the integrity of English language (British standard I assume) on this site, correct?

Of course, my reply is said in jest, counselor.

My heart can't take this. This team and this season will kill me.

I knew this was going to be a tricky game, and I was cussing up a storm, and almost lost it when O'Shea (who should have scored) had that chance towards the end.

But, he missed.

In past seasons, that would have gone in and the game would have ended in a disappointing draw for Liverpool.

I would have preferred a more composed finish, but I am happy for the three points.

Well Michael-J, here is more evidence of the stupidity (sorry, no kinder way for me to say it) behind West Indies' 20/20 philosophy and tactics.

Gibson happy with West Indies methods

Matches: Bangladesh v West Indies at Dhaka

When two opposition players speak openly about your weakness, a reply is awaited. When asked if his players are too reliant on boundaries and place a low emphasis on singles and twos, West Indies coach Ottis Gibson said he took pride in having big hitters in the team.

Before the India-West Indies game, Suresh Raina had said that India would look to cut out fours and sixes, because West Indies don't like rotating the strike. On Sunday evening, India bowled plenty of dot balls, cut out the boundaries and restricted West Indies to a modest score.

Now Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has echoed Raina's words. In four T20s against Bangladesh so far, West Indies have averaged eleven fours and eight sixes a match. That sixes count is higher than their overall average of just over five per match.

Gibson responded by saying there was nothing wrong with West Indies' method, and they had done well basing their strategy around boundaries, even if India had taken advantage of intelligence gathered on his team's players during the IPL.

"We are blessed with players who can hit the ball to the stands," Gibson said. "I am sure people will look at [Chris] Gayle to hit the ball to the stands rather than take a quick single and pull a hamstring. If you look back at the game, most of our best players are in the IPL and I think they [India] know them quite well, and a lot of the plans from last night seem to come out of IPL. Bangladesh are different and we look forward to it. We have to focus on winning, to survive in the tournament.

"People will make assumptions based on what happened last night. India bowled well. We didn't get singles but we don't normally get singles. That's the way it goes sometimes."

Gibson believes that talk of taking more singles wouldn't necessarily mean his team would start doing that. He wants the batsmen to be more aware of the situation they are playing in, and then find ways to find the boundaries.
  :frustrated: :banginghead:

"You can't change much technically but it is in the mindset," he said. "We have to be aware of what the opposition is trying to do. We need to adjust mindset to counteract that. We can't just start taking singles, but take those that are there. I wouldn't want them to be run out, like Gayle did last night. He would have got 30-40 extra runs."

Against India, West Indies didn't include the experienced Ravi Rampaul, and went with the in-form left-armer Krishmar Santokie instead. With India discovering plenty of swing under the lights, Gibson said it would be a factor in their selection against Bangladesh, in what will be another night game.

"The ball swung more at night, as the Indian bowlers showed," he said. "We have to look at it when we form the eleven. Rampaul and [Sheldon] Cottrell are in our side, both are excellent so we will see how the team shapes up.

"I thought he [Santokie] bowled okay. Defending 130 was never going to be easy against the Indian batting line-up. He will get more and more comfortable in the tournament. He was probably a bit nervous, and he will work to improve."

2-2 at present! 2nd half has commenced.

Speaking of presents, Ronaldo won himself a penalty that should not have been one on two objective criteria.

3-2 Real

The lazy running does just annoy me. I watch Australia this morning, When they wasn't getting the boundaries, they at least take the single, and looking to turn singles into 2 runs. I watching and these fellas ambling down the wicket like is a Sunday morning stroll.

We easily left 20 runs on the table. 67 Dot Balls!

This is exactly what Suresh Raina said about us at the pre-match press conference and people digging horrors....he said our inability to pick the ones and twos is our greatest weakness and we would struggle to make runs if we couldn't hit the 4s and 6s... Sammy's response was, " well try to stop us from hitting sixes nah."   Well, I guess they did just that.

Well you did not provide a link confirming the full comment, but if this is true, then this has to be one of the stupidest things I have heard in a long time.

If this statement reflects the overall philosophy of the West Indies T20 approach, then West Indies cricket really has big problems in the T20 area.

Too many dot balls. We look disinterested and befuddled

Because there was no effort to pick up singles in the early overs, thus increasing the pressure on the batsmen.

When our batsmen finally decided to start looking for singles, it was too late...

Then again, Gayle does not have the level of fitness required to be a singles type of batsman

Looks like a long afternoon for the gunners...

2-0 within the first ten minutes of the match.

172
Pool cyah drop any points going fwd ... what something like 9 games. But back in de day Arsenal had an even stiffer challenge, something like 12 games ahead of them and they won those games. On balance, Pool might be most deserving of the title.

It looks promising, but based on the number of false dawns I have endured as a Liverpool supporter, I am not so sure about the title; of course Liverpool should go for it, but at this point, at the very least, the reds need to secure the champions league spot to keep the likes of Suarez and Sturridge looking at other clubs to increase their chances of playing champions league football.

173
Gerrard has really been so clinical from the spot this season.

He really should be England's designated penalty taker for the world cup in Brazil.

174
Another huge win for the reds today in a game where Southampton had Liverpool's back four on their heels for the majority of the first half and the first ten minutes of the second.

That Sterling substitution definitely made the difference as Liverpool began dominating more in the midfield play.

Now into second.

There's a lot of football left to be played, but it is heartening to see Liverpool win games such as this, where the club was outplayed for such a significant portion of the match.

In past seasons, these games would have been draws or losses.

Tief decision by the ref dey.

and he misses!

Ozil did not look confident when taking the kick and I am not surprised he missed.

Ironically, Neur was already diving to his left before Ozil kicked the ball; all Ozil had to do was hit it into the right corner.

I was 3 years old...I going nd take it in...shitt...we eh hv no match no time soon anyway  ;D

I was 10 and can still remember the pain of that game. One of the few times in my life that I broke down and cried.

 :(

I cannot ever watch that game again....

Those that were too young to experience that 1990 team will never fully understand the joy and pain of that campaign.

I remember that Kerry Jameson goal against Guatemala at the National Statdium (it wasn't named the Haseley Crawford yet) the month before. I remember all the drama and tension that preceded that brilliant strike because the Strike Squad were moments from being eliminated from the 1990 campaign.

I was a football lime by my grandmother's house and my father was fulminating against the tactical inadequacies of our team.

As the seconds came down and the ball came into Jameson's path....

That strike sent the red multitude at the stadium into delirious raptures, my father, along with everyone else was beside themselves with joy.

And then came the cruel letdown a month later...
