Football / John: Soca Warriors have a lot to play for
« on: October 06, 2008, 07:37:18 PM »
Trinidad Guardian

REFUSING to give up hope of qualifying for a second straight Fifa World Cup finals, T&T and Southampton striker Stern John says the ‘Soca Warriors’ still have a lot to play for.

John was speaking after his first training session with the national team at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, yesterday, ahead of tomorrow’s international friendly at the same venue against the Dominican Republic.

Tomorrow’s friendly is part of the T&T team’s preparations for their next World Cup matches away to Guatemala on Saturday and at home to the USA, four days later.

The other overseas-based players called up by ‘Soca Warriors’ coach, Colombian Francisco Maturana, and present at yesterday’s one-and-a-half hour session, included goalkeeper Clayton Ince (Walsall), Avery John (Miami FC), Khaleem Hyland (SV Zulte Waregem), and Sunderland’s Kenwyne Jones.

Jones was given permission to train with the T&T team by his manager Roy Keane, as he continues his rehabilation from a knee injury. He is back home to attend a funeral of a relative.

The Sunderland forward, who was accompanied by a club physio, will not take part in tomorrow’s friendly nor the two World Cup matches.

While the team trained together under the watchful eyes of Maturana, John who is recovering from a slight ankle injury, did some light training with the help of assistant coach, Ceasar Maturana for most of the afternoon, ending with a shooting drill.

Should John play in the match against Guatemala it will be his first for T&T in the second round campaign since scoring the second goal in the first round 2-0 away win over Bermuda which secured a 3-2 aggregate win and T&T’s Second Round berth.

T&T is currently on four points with Guatemala and five behind Group A leaders USA from three matches.

Cuba is without a point.

Guatemala is above T&T by virtue of a better goal-difference. Only two of the four teams will advance.

Looking ahead to the World Cup qualifiers, John said he was very confident that the ‘Soca Warriors’ can qualify for South Africa 2010.

“The last time we qualified for Germany, we had fewer points than we have now and at time looking at the remaining schedule we still have a lot to play for,” the veteran forward said.

“We know our capabilities and we know what is needed and going to Guatemala we have to take it one match at a time.”

The country’s record goalscorer with 69 goals also pointed out: “I love scoring goals. That is what I do for a living. But right now the team comes first and I will do whatever the coach requires, even if that means playing 10 minutes.

Commenting on his recall to the team after being overlooked for the first three matches versus Cuba, Guatemala and USA, John said, “My injury was not that bad, it was a slight grade one tear and hopefully I will be ready for Saturday.

John also explained that he is not expected to see any action in tomorrow’s friendly international versus Dominican Republic at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

“I’m working my way back into full fitness and I don’t think I will be ready for the game on Wednesday, which is not all that important as Saturday’s encounter away to Guatemala.

The other players who participated in the training session were Marvin Phillip (W Connection), Cyd Gray (Clico San Juan Jabloteh), Makan Hislop (Utd Petrotrin), Aklie Edwards (Defence Force), Clyde Leon (W Connection), Keon Daniel (Utd Petrotrin), Anthony Wolfe (North East Stars), Andre Toussaint (W Connection) and Cornell Glen (Clico San Juan Jabloteh) while Keyeno Thomas (Joe Public) will join the team on Thursday.

Thomas is with the Joe Public team which will host Montreal Impact in the second match of tomorrow’s double-header at Mucurapo, in a Concacaf Champions League match.

T&T captain, Dwight Yorke who arrived on Saturday did not participate in the session while Russell Latapy (Falkirk), Carlos Edwards (Wolverhampton) and Christopher Birchall arrived late yesterday and will train today at the same venue from 4.30pm.

Darryl Roberts of Turkish-club Denizlispor Kulubu was due home last night while Jason Scotland (Swansea), Dennis Lawrence (Crewe Alexandra) and Puerto Rico Islanders defender, Osei Telesford are expected today.

22-man squad named for clash with Guatemala.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

With just over a week to go before this country’s next 2010 World Cup qualifier at home to Guatemala, head coach Francisco Maturana has announced a 22-man provisional squad for the encounter at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on September 6.

The squad will have a return of several of the members from the one which came away 3-1 winners over Cuba in Havana on August 20. There are call ups for in form Swansea City striker Jason Scotland and Toronto FC defender Julius James while Sunderland midfielder Dwight Yorke is also on the list of invited overseas professionals. Yorke made a return from injury with a 70-minute run for Sunderland’s Reserves last week. Sunderland midfielder Carlos Edwards is also in the squad.

Defence Force defender Aklie Edwards is also in the squad and will be eligible for action in the qualifiers having completed a four-match suspension for a red card offense in an Olympic qualifier against Cuba earlier this year.

Among the other home-based pros include midfielder Keon Daniel, the double scorer against Cuba as well as Densill Theobald, Anthony Wolfe, Clyde Leon and goalkeeper Marvin Phillips. Maturana has also included Khaleem Hyland in the squad. He received a red card against Cuba but is expected to be available for the clash with United States in Chicago on September 10.

“The squad remains almost the same but you know we are always looking to try for improvements. We will be working towards it because it is possible that the next two teams (Guatemala and USA) will play a different game to Cuba,” Maturana told TTF Media.

“Against Cuba I think we remained disciplined in the field and we continued a similar game from the one against El Salvador. That was a positive indication of our progress. Now we will try to keep that going and prepare as best as we can for Guatemala and America,” he added. Maturana will see his players again when training resumes on Monday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Meantime, members of the squad which completed the win over Cuba were each offered a letter of congratulations from the TTFF for their efforts in Havana.

“It is with great pleasure that I offer these short yet heartfelt words of congratulations to you and all your other team mates on your success in your first game in this the semi-final rounds of the World Cup 2010 qualifiers,” TTFF Special Advisor Jack Warner wrote.

“As I had stated to you just prior to the game, this game was especially important as the first at this stage, the most difficult phase of the tournament. I am proud that you heeded my words and came out of the encounter with a victory, and with the highest margin of all the games played in this segment by all the teams. This could prove to be very decisive later down the road and you are to be commended in converting most of your chances into goals, which as you can attest, are what wins matches.

The three points earned is a great first step. There is much work to be done and therefore now is not the time for complacency. Bask in your victory, but always keep in mind that it will not get easier. All teams have a burning desire to get to the World Cup. You must want it more and demonstrate this hunger for victory. With hard work and conviction that it can be done; it will be done!! You will always have my support and that of the T&TFF. Congratulations on this game, even as you continue to keep your eye on the main prize and do your team mates and your country proud,” Warner concluded. Tickets for the T&T versus Guatemala clash are now available via 800-fans and through online bookings at www.ttffonline.com/shop

Football / A question about form...
« on: July 14, 2008, 09:26:27 AM »
Just curious to know what you mean by a player in good form...
I have noticed many times including today in the PFL thread, people talk about form..This applies to not only football, but cricket and many other sports...
Ex: When Kenwyne had not scored for Sunderland for a few games, then all of a sudden he scores 1 goal, I hear people saying he get back his form...To me he scored a good goal, but until he starts scoring regularly then he is in form... I read today that Marvin Oliver scored, and someone stated, good he back in form.... Now I did not see the game, or have not seen him play for a long time, but I gather he had not been scoring much,so does 1 goal make you in form.....
I remember Lara playing  a few games and scoring a little bit of runs, then one game, he score a century...People talking about he back in form, but only to see the next game or inning he scored only a few runs....

Maturana clears air on his coaching philosophy.
T&T Guardian Reports.

The T&T Football Federation (TTFF) and the national team coaching staff met with members and officials of the T&T Professional Football League (PFL) and its clubs on Wednesday, to simplify the national team’s access to local-based players for preparations for the semifinal round of the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Following Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Bermuda which secured this country’s passage to the next round, the TTFF called the meeting with the Pro League which was subsequently held at the Nelson Mandela Hall, Centre of Excellence.

Coaches present included Ron La Forest (Ma Pau), Michael McComie (Joe Public), Terry Fenwick, Angus Eve (Clico San Juan Jabloteh), Hutson Charles (Defence Force), Peter Granville (Tobago United), Brian Williams, Philbert Jones (United Petrotrin), Stuart Charles Fevrier (W Connection), Jerry Moe (Caledonia AIA) and Clint Marcelle (North East Stars).

Among the TTFF personnel were T&T head coach Francisco Maturana, assistant coach Anton Corneal, TTFF general secretary Richard Groden, Keith Look Loy, technical consultant and special advisor Jack Warner.

The main aim of the meeting was to reach an agreement with clubs, to ensure the release of players for training and international matches without complications.

Maturana and Corneal also discussed their feelings on the current state of the team and its plans for the future preparations as they look ahead to facing the United States, Cuba and Guatemala from August 20.

Both coaches were also called on to respond to matters raised by some of the club coaches present, regarding the non-selection of certain players.

Maturana clearly gave his reasons, citing that at no time did he overlook any player due to any off-the-field circumstances.

He was asked about the fact that young midfielder Khaleem Hyland was selected despite being unattached and the Colombian explained that the physical state of 19-year-old player who is on the verge of signing with an English club and had been in the national team since the beginning of the year. He explained that Hyland is different to that of a player in his late 20s or early 30s who had not secured a first team place at the club or international level for over a year.

Maturana also cleared the air on the absence of English-born midfielder Chris Birchall, saying that he had in fact monitored the player’s state during the past season and is hopeful that the player among others do in fact begin playing and training regularly at a level that would make them an option for his selection process.

Caledonia coach Moe also got involved asking what were the sacrifices the PFL clubs were willing to make to ensure the country has a well prepared team.

Maturana added to the table that as coaches they all understood the value of selecting and standing by the selection of their respective squads.

In addressing why certain players are not being selected he indicated that those were issues that he as a coach will never discuss in the media because he always believes a player can be saved and in most instances he would give a player the benefit of a doubt.

“But they also need to start playing and training regularly. It’s the only way a player will be considered for selection. No player earns his pick on reputation from the past,” Maturana said. “Once the players are active then the door is never closed I assure you.”

Corneal also took note of Fevrier’s questions on the non-selection of players who were part of the 2007 Concacaf Gold Cup squad but he (Corneal) later said that Maturana had in fact observed these players prior beginning his duty as head coach and also worked with some of them during the early period of his tenure and therefore their absence from the team was due to technical reasons.

The TTFF and the coaching staff as well, has taken note of the interest from the local clubs shown in the use of overseas-based players and will be careful as to avoid some of the local-based national players at any time feeling that they are being looked over, even by its own league, with preference to players based outside of the country.

The TTFF and its coaching staff maintained its stance that it will not bow to any pressure over the national team selection process and players will only be justifiably selected or considered. But the governing body and its staff remain open to discussions.

“It is interesting to note that some of the same coaches (names withheld) who in the (recent) past had been calling for use of more local players instead of a dominant number of overseas ones have really in a sense changed their calls now,” Corneal stated.

On the issue of scouting for the right talent, Maturana, who has observed several Pro League matches here, added that the feeder for the senior team is the Pro League, the other zones and “unseen” spots are for the Pro League clubs to look at and they should be getting these players in their system.

At the end of the meeting, the majority stood in support of Maturana and his staff and seemed prepared to offer continuing support towards the preparation of the team towards qualifying for South Africa 2010.

Soca Warriors get big bucks.
By: Francis Joseph (Guardian).
[/size]

British arbitrator Ian Mill, QC, ruled yesterday that 16 members of the Trinidad and Tobago World Cup squad are entitled to 50 per cent of the net profits Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) derived from the Road to Germany 2006 campaign.

The question for determination now is how much is 50 per cent of the net profits?

In a 30-page judgment delivered yesterday, Mill detailed the dispute between the players and the TTFF, which had its genesis in 2004, when T&T began the World Cup journey to Germany.

The players had originally agreed to 30 per cent of the net profits, but that was changed to 50 per cent after meetings with the TTFF and its special adviser, Jack Warner.

According to Mill, the 50 per cent was finally agreed upon on June 12, 2006. Mill stated:

“It seems to me that the applicants (players) have done enough to raise a case for the TTFF to answer in this respect. I therefore find, not without some hesitation, that Mr Warner did promise on June 12, 2006, to increase the players’ share under the commercial revenues sharing agreement from 30 per cent to 50 per cent, in order to obtain ‘practical benefits’ for the TTFF, and that therefore, that promise was, and is, legally binding on the TTFF.”

The arbitration hearing was held between April 28 and 30 in the London Headquarters of the Sports Dispute Resolution Panel.

Now that the arbitrator has determined that the players are entitled to 50 per cent of the net profits, the next step for the arbitrator is to determine what figure should be paid out.

A case management hearing will take place in London in June, when dates will be set for the trial some time later this year.

Both parties agreed that the arbitration hearings will be in private, and no one is allowed to disclose the contents of the proceedings and/or the judgment.

In his judgment, Mill said he was disappointed that neither Warner nor the TTFF secretary Richard Groden appeared during the hearing in April.

The arbitrator indicated in his judgment that he hoped the TTFF would provide a proper account of the monies received to the players.

“Obviously, I hope that the effect of this decision will be that a proper account will expeditiously be rendered, together with the payments shown as due by that account and sufficient inspection of the TTFF’s records to enable the applicants reasonably to be satisfied that they have received that to which they are entitled.

“In that context, I should observe that any agreement entered into prior to qualification for the World Cup Finals, but which resulted in revenues accruing to the TTFF in consequence of qualifying, should be disclosed by the TTFF to the applicants.”

The players argued that the T&T Government published a figure of $173 million which the TTFF supposedly received during the campaign, but the TTFF disputed this, saying the figure was much less.

During the hearings in London, four players gave oral evidence before the arbitrator: goalkeepers Shaka Hislop and Kelvin Jack, defender Brent Sancho, and striker Stern John.

The 16 players who took the TTFF to arbitration were: Marvin Andrews, Christopher Birchall, Atiba Charles, Cyd Gray, Ian Cox, Cornell Glen, Shaka Hislop, Avery John, Stern John, Kenwyne Jones, Kelvin Jack, Collin Samuel, Brent Sancho, Aurtis Whitley, Evans Wise and Anthony Wolfe.

Representing the players were British attorneys Rupert Butler and Mike Townley, while Englishman William Mc-Commick, assisted by Trinidad lawyers Om Lalla and Kelvin Ramkissoon, appeared for the TTFF.

The impasse started in the Port-of-Spain High Court last year, but the TTFF took the preliminary point that this matter was not suitable for litigation.

The Federation asked for the matter to be stayed and resolved by an arbitrator. The arbitration proceedings were then filed in London on October 4.

The players contended that after TT defeated Bahrain 2-1 on aggregate to qualify for the World Cup Finals, the TTFF received US$5.6 million from FIFA.

As a result, the players argued that there was an inevitable commercial spin, in that sponsors paid large sums of money to be associated with any of the teams reaching the finals.

A statement on the Dragons website read: "After the sad events of the past week, manager Brian Little has made his intentions clear about reshaping the team for next season.

"It really goes without saying that the club's finances will have to be revaluated as we step down from the Football League and many aspects of the club's operations will have to be reviewed.

"It is always a sad time when players move on from the club and we would like to thank them all for their efforts on our behalf."

The closest answer I could give being a Chelsea fan, is if Chelsea winning would make Sunderland go down it would depend on who the eventual winner is... If any other team except ManU winning, then ah could handle the second place, if not then is Chelsea all the way...

Murder toll jumps to 24
Wednesday, January 16 2008

TWO more murders yesterday pushed the toll for 2008 to 24. A 20-year-old man of Bagatelle, Diego Martin, yesterday succumbed to his gunshot wounds about three and a half hours after he was shot while visiting a friend.

According to a police report, at about 7.30 am, Angleo Skerrette, of Savannah Terrace, was standing outside the Tomato Trace home of a friend when several loud explosions were heard. The friend, police said, who was inside the house at the time, ran out upon hearing the gunshots, where he discovered Skerrette lying in a pool of blood. Skerrette was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was treated and warded in a critical condition. However, police said at about 11 am he succumbed to his injuries.

A motive is yet to be determined for his killing.

The other murder took place on Monday night. According to a police report, at about 9.40 pm Shaka Wiley, 27, originally from Malabar, was at Sanchez Street, Arima, when a lone gunman approached him and opened fire. Wiley who was shot several times about the body, died on the scene. Wiley was a former student of Fatima College.

A party of officers visited the scene, along with the District Medical Officer who viewed the body and ordered its removal to the Forensic Science Centre in St James. A motive is yet to be determined for his killing. However, police said that he was a suspect in several robberies and shooting incidents.

Meanwhile, police investigators are calling on members of the public to assist them in identifying the body of a man which was discovered in a swamp last Friday at El Socorro. Investigations are continuing.

Wrexham boss hails unknown talent

Wrexham boss Brian Carey was delighted with their victory
Boss Brian Carey believes the key to Wrexham's success this season lays in the unknown talent in his squad.
He hailed midfielder Matty Done and striker Josh Johnson who helped knock League One Port Vale out of the Carling Cup on Tuesday night.

The Dragons won 5-3 on penalties with the match finishing 1-1 after extra time at Vale Park.

"We've got a lot of players that a lot of people probably haven't seen, but we know what they can do," said Carey.

We will worry about that when the draw is made, but right now we're focussed on Saturday

Brian Carey

"It was part of our game-plan to introduce players like that and unsettle them because very often you don't have to be the best player in the world, but if you're quick, you'll cause problems.

"Josh came on tonight and gave us something to think about because he performed very, very well and really unsettled the Port Vale defence. Matty caused them problems as well.

"We take a lot of encouragement but as I stressed to the players afterwards we've got to keep doing this every day in training, every game, set ourselves some standards and try and reach them every time we go on the pitch because you can't accept anything else at this stage."

Carey played down the prospect of a money-spinning tie with Premiership side in the second round draw, instead insisting the focus must be on the league.

"I'll leave that to the chief executive and the owners to go down that road," he added.

"Of course it is very, very useful and much needed revenue for a club like ourselves but I just want to get through the next round.

Newcomers, Morecambe are the visitors to the Racecourse at the weekend for Wrexham's first home game of the season.

Them reporters get real tie up...

Dundee United 0-0 Hibernian

The game at Tannadice was a dismal affair
Dundee United and Hibernian fought out a wretched goalless draw at Tannadice that does neither side any favours.
Hibs midfielder Guillaume Beuzelin hit the crossbar with an early strike and United's Craig Conway failed to touch home a gilt-edged chance.

Simon Brown, given a rare start for Hibs, made a smart save to keep out a Noel Hunt shot in the second half.

And the visiting goalkeeper had to push away a dangerous long-range free-kick from United captain Barry Robson.

Interview: Hibernian manager John Collins
Interview: Dundee United manager Craig Levein

It was a game Hibs needed to win to keep in touch with the race at the top of the table but too many of their players simply didn't look interested.

United were a little livelier but lacked the quality to take advantage of an off-day from the visitors.

Hibs created a wonderful opening inside the fourth minute when Abdessalam Benjelloun threaded a pass through to Beuzelin but, with the ball bobbling on the badly rutted pitch, the midfielder's shot clipped the crossbar.

The atrocious condition of the playing surface was making life difficult for both sides, with several passes going astray and players struggling to run with the ball.

Hibs left-back David Murphy fired in a powerful shot from 20 yards that was headed away by defender Lee Wilkie.

And United striker Hunt tried his luck with an acrobatic overhead kick that flew a couple of yards wide.

The Hibs defence appeared intent on gifting the ball to United as often as they could but the home side failed to take advantage.

A woeful first half came to a close with a stretching Conway somehow failing to stab home an angled Robson drive that drifted just inches wide of the post.

A training ground injury denied Hibs the services of Andrew McNeil, so Brown started his first match since August.

The big goalkeeper flapped at a looping cross early in the second half but Jason Scotland slashed the loose ball wide of the gaping goal.

Steven Whittaker tried an audacious shot from wide on the right flank and United keeper Derek Stillie was given a fright as it dipped on to the roof of the net.

On 75 minutes, Robson brushed off challenges from Scott Brown and Shelton Martis but his shot from 20 yards skewed wide.

Brown then had to make the first save of the day when he got down smartly to palm away a 12-yard dig from Hunt.

The visiting keeper was then at full stretch to get a hand to Robson's curling long-range free-kick.

The full-time whistle followed soon after to mercifully bring a dismal day's play to an end.

Whitley makes Wrexham loan move   :rotfl:

Whitley has not played since September last year
Wrexham have signed Cardiff City midfielder Jeff Whitley on loan until the end of the season.
Whitley ended an unsuccessful loan spell with Championship rivals Stoke in December, where he made just one start and three substitute appearances.

He will not play in Sunday's derby with Chester, but will be considered for Tuesday's game with Grimsby.

"Jeff seems up for the challenge and we are looking forward to seeing him play," said Wrexham boss Brian Carey.

"We have been monitoring his situation for a while and have been making enquires to see if he might be available.

"This signing should be a major acquisition for the club, especially when you consider the experience and know-how he will bring with him."

Last week, Cardiff revealed they had been unable to locate the transfer-listed Northern Ireland international.

But the 31-year-old then made contact with the club and has accepted Wrexham's offer to join them for three months.

Whitley, raised in Wrexham, joined Cardiff in July 2005 and has since made 42 league and cup appearances for the Ninian Park outfit.

He made nine appearances for Wrexham on a short loan spell at the Racecourse eight years ago.

LA Galaxy admit Beckham interest
By Matt Slater

Signing players of (Beckham's) stature would be a wonderful step in the right direction, not just for the Galaxy but for soccer in America

Alexi Lalas
Los Angeles Galaxy
The Los Angeles Galaxy have confirmed they are interested in signing David Beckham if the former England captain fails to renew his Real Madrid deal.

Out of contract in Spain at the end of the season and no longer a first-team regular, the 31-year-old midfielder is believed to be considering a move.

"There are thousands of clubs out there that would love to have a player of his calibre," said Galaxy boss Alexi Lalas.

"And the Los Angeles Galaxy is certainly one of them."

Interview: LA Galaxy boss Alexi Lalas

Beckham, who played against the Galaxy for Real in a pre-season game in 2005, has already said that he would like to end his career in the US.

"I've one year left at Real, and maybe two more after that, but things can change in football and the American league does interest me," said Beckham.

"I want to be part of a country that is passionate about sport. And I've got my academy in LA, which is important to me because that is my life after the game."

But when he made those comments in April he was still a fixture in the Real first team and captain of England.

Things have changed considerably for the former Manchester United star in the intervening months.

Dropped by new managers at club and country, Beckham is now stalling on extending his stay in Madrid and believed to be reconsidering the final chapters of his playing career.

Beckham's Real Madrid displays are little more than cameos now
As well as the Galaxy, Celtic, Spurs and Israeli club Maccabi Netanya have been reported as possible destinations for the high-profile star.

The two British clubs, however, have recently distanced themselves from a possible move for Beckham and the prospect of the player going to Israel seems remote.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Lalas, the Galaxy's president and general manager, made it clear that Beckham would suit his team, signal their intent to compete on the world stage and be good business for Major League Soccer.

"For many people the Los Angeles Galaxy are looked upon as the jewel of MLS," he said.

"We play in the best stadium, we have had incredible success over the history of the league and we have had great individual players and great teams. There is a tradition of excellence.

"All of this leads to this race to become the first 'MLS super club', if you will.

"That is something we aspire to and in order to do that you have to have quality players, a direction and passion, a good coach and credibility domestically and internationally.

"Signing players of (Beckham's) stature would be a wonderful step in the right direction, not just for the Galaxy but for soccer in America."

When asked for a firmer statement of intent regarding a possible bid for Beckham, Lalas was careful not to say anything that could be regarded as 'tapping up'.

"A move for Beckham is not something we need to discuss at this point because he's under contract with Real," he said.

"But if that changes, and there's an opportunity, of course we'd be interested."

Brand Beckham attempts to break America at the 2003 MTV Awards

The former US international did, however, admit that the Galaxy's owner, sports conglomerate Anschutz Entertainment Group, has a close relationship with Beckham.

His academy shares a home with the Galaxy just outside LA at the 27,000-seat Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Lalas also said that with the Galaxy missing the MLS play-offs for the first time in 10 seasons he was planning a major overhaul of the team during the close season.

One possible stumbling block for a Galaxy attempt to sign Beckham would be the salary cap rules that exist in the MLS.

The rules were introduced when the league was set up in 1996 to ensure a level playing field and prevent any repeat of the excesses that brought down the North American Soccer League in the early 1980s.

But Lalas confirmed that the 12 team owners are due to discuss a loosening of these rules, a move that would make marquee signings more likely.

"We recognise that when opportunities that will benefit the entire league come along we have to be able to make adjustments," he said.

"I feel that going forward there will be the ability for the individual teams to do something like (sign a player of Beckham's stature)."

What remains to be seen is if Beckham feels his days as first-team player for a major club - and country - are genuinely over.

Despite the huge strides made by American soccer and the MLS a move to the US would still be seen as an admission that his career is winding down.

Yorke set to quit Trinidad side

Yorke skippered his country at the 2006 World Cup finals
Sunderland striker Dwight Yorke looks to have played his last game for Trinidad and Tobago.
The 34-year-old is one of 13 players in dispute with the national federation over payments owed from the World Cup.

T&T skipper Yorke issued a statement on behalf of the players who went to the 2006 finals in Germany.

It said: "We would like to announce our consideration to retire from international football immediately after our next two games."

Yorke, who scored in Saturday's 5-0 win over St Vincent/Grenadines, added: "We all recognise the fact that retirement must come to us all.

"But we certainly didn't anticipate this decision, especially following so hot on the heels of what has been our proudest and most memorable achievements in the game this summer.

"We cannot see how we can build on anything if the contracts that we enter into are not worth the paper they are written on. It is for these reasons we now feel the need to say 'goodbye' to the international stage."

Yorke returned to England on Sunday after agreeing with Black Cats manager Roy Keane that he would not play in Wednesday's friendly against Panama ahead of Sunderland's trip to Preston at the weekend.

Beckenbauer issues 2010 warning

Beckenbauer's claims are likely to infuriate many South Africans
Franz Beckenbauer believes organisers of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa are facing serious problems.
"The organisation for the World Cup in South Africa is beset by big problems," the German legend claimed.

"But these are not South African problems - these are African problems.

"People are working against rather than with each other," said the Kaiser, chairman of the 2006 World Cup organising committee.

But Beckenbauer ruled out the possibility of Germany taking over the 2010 tournament if the mounting problems proved too much for South Africa.

"There are emergency solutions, but Germany is not one of them, there are enough other solutions," added the 61-year-old in comments likely to infuriate South Africans.

Beckenbauer's claims come just days after Fifa president announced that he would travel to South Africa to urge lawmakers to speed up building work.

Blatter said he would meet President Thabo Mbeki and "explain the value of the World Cup" to the country's parliament.

The Fifa chief also advised South Africans not to take up offers of help from British, French, German, or other experts involved in organising previous World Cups.

I heard it mentioned before, that if they do not get their act together, USA is a candidate for hosting it, ...

Ref Poll sent home from World Cup

Poll brandishes one of three yellow cards at Simunic
Graham Poll has been named as one of 14 referees who have been sent home from the World Cup.
The English referee has paid the price for his yellow-card blunder in the Australia versus Croatia game when he booked Josip Simunic three times.

Russian Valentin Ivanov, who issued a World Cup record 16 yellow and four red cards in Portugal's fiery game against Holland, is also on his way home.

Argentine Horacio Elizondo will referee England's quarter-final with Portugal.

Poll, 42, had been tipped as a possible World Cup final referee prior to the tournament getting under way.

But a series of errors in Australia's crucial final Group F match ended any such hopes of being given the showpiece final.

Poll's biggest mistake led to him cautioning Croatia's Simunic three times before finally sending him off.

Graham Poll is an exceptional referee, who will be able to overcome the situation

Fifa referees chief Angel Maria Villar Llona

But the Tring official also dismissed Australia's Brett Emerton and Croatia's Dario Simic.

And Poll awarded the Socceroos a first-half penalty for handball by Stjepan Tomas but failed to spot an even more blatant handball by the same player after the break.

Mark Viduka also seemed to be bundled to the ground in the box during the first half, while it appeared that Harry Kewell was offside when he scored Australia's second equaliser.

A statement from Fifa referees committee president Angel Maria Villar Llona defended Poll but also conceded he had made a mistake.

The statement read: "Graham Poll is an exceptional referee and a great sportsman, who will be able to overcome the situation thanks to his strong personality and love of the game.

Viduka had strong penalty claims waved away

"Thursday evening's 2-2 draw between Croatia and Australia in Stuttgart saw referee Graham Poll make an error.

"The experienced official is disappointed at having committed the error, the first such mistake in his 26-year career.

"The Fifa referees committee also recognised the oversight and the fact that none of the match officials at the stadium picked up on the error.

"In explaining his actions to the committee, Poll said he incorrectly noted down the name of the Australia number three Craig Moore when booking Simunic for the second time and failed to realise his error."

Poll's assistant referees Philip Sharp and Glenn Turner will also not be involved in the latter stages of the tournament in Germany.

Yorke hails influence of Birchall

Yorke's side are in the same group as England
Trinidad & Tobago captain Dwight Yorke has praised midfielder Chris Birchall for the impact he has had on the team.
Port Vale's Birchall became the first white player to play for the country in 60 years when he was called up during the World Cup qualifying campaign.

"At the time he joined the team he was the odd guy out but we all welcome him with open arms and he's been very much a key player to our team," said Yorke.

"He's come in and done a fantastic job and has become an influential player."

Trinidad & Tobago open their World Cup campaign against Sweden on 10 June before playing England on 15 June and Paraguay five days later.

Yorke added: "Chris is a fantastic bloke, he takes everything in his stride.

"We are very lucky that we have someone as passionate as him, and he brings something different to the table

Swans sign Gills defender on loan

Swansea City have signed defender Brent Sancho from League One side Gillingham.

Trinidad & Tobago international Sancho has signed on for an initial month's loan and could feature in Tuesday's LDV Vans Trophy area final with Colchester.

Swansea manager Kenny Jackett was desperate to sign a defender after Kris O'Leary's two-match suspension for a red card added to his defensive woes.

Sancho, 28, has fallen out of favour at Gillingham recently, and was embroiled in a club-versus-country row last year.

Villarreal spy slams Rangers duo

Cabello hopes to expose the gaps between Kyrgiakos and Andrews
Villarreal chief scout Javier Cabello, has attacked Rangers' rearguard ahead of their Champions League showdown next week at Ibrox.
He was speaking as captain Quique Alvarez was ruled out with a muscle tear during their 1-0 defeat by Celta Vigo at the weekend.

"The Rangers defence, especially the centre halves Kyrgiakos and Andrews, are very weak and too slow.

"While they are good in the air, we can take advantage of them," he said.

Cabello, who attended Sunday's Old Firm encounter, is clearly confident ahead of next Wednesday's Ibrox clash and is encouraged by the fact that Alex McLeish's side are under-performing in the Scottish Premier League.   I have to say that the Rangers players look to be low on morale

Javier Cabello

"We score a lot of goals from set-pieces and will try to hurt them when we are playing near their penalty box," he said.

"I have to say that the Rangers players look to be low on morale.

"It seems Rangers run out of ideas and have a mental block when they try to take the initiative."

Amid his frank assessment, Cabello was full of praise for Chris Burke on his recent spying missions, while hinting that the winger could prosper elsewhere in the future.

"I saw Rangers against Aberdeen and Celtic and the player who really caught my eye was Chris Burke," he said.

"He has everything and I expect him to have a tremendous future. I have no doubts about this.

"It was exciting for me to see him taking the ball and trying to go forward. Rangers have a real prospect.

"I will not be surprised if this boy ends up playing for a big club very soon."

Meanwhile, it has been reported that the Villarreal players locked their own coach out of a crisis meeting as they search for ways to reverse their poor form ahead of the Rangers game.

The Spanish side were given a boost though, as playmaker Juan Riquelme looks set to win his fitness battle, wherehis absence having coincided with a slump in domestic form.

Midfielder Riquelme has responded well to treatment in Buenos Aires and is expected to make the journey to Glasgow.
