FIFA ruling may hit League clubs
BBC Sports

Clubs who are involved in this season's Football League play-offs are set to lose players involved in the 2006 World Cup finals because of a new Fifa rule.

Players chosen for the finals will not be able to play in any club game after 15 May, apart from the Champions League final, which has been moved to 17 May.

It means that Andy Johnson, if chosen by England, would miss the Championship final - if Crystal Palace reached it.

Reading, Southampton, Port Vale and Wrexham could also be affected.

Respectively the quartet have players representing the United States, Sweden and Trinidad and Tobago.

Fifa have introduced the cut-off date so players can have sufficient rest before the finals start on 9 June.

As well as moving the Champions League final, the Uefa Cup final has also been brought forward a week to 10 May.

"We don't want burned-out players. They will be free from other engagements," said Fifa general secretary Urs Linsi.

"The 23 players on the list for each of the 32 participating nations will not be available for any other competitions after this date.

"The Champions League final is a special exception."

There have been complaints in recent major tournaments that players involved in the major European leagues had arrived in an exhausted state because of the heavy schedule of matches during the domestic season.

Real dread news...
FC Utrecht defender, 26, dies in sleep

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - FC Utrecht defender David di Tommaso died in his sleep at age 26. The cause of death wasn't immediately known, the soccer club said Tuesday.

``He ate dinner last night and went to bed as he usually did. He didn't complain of feeling ill,'' club doctor Frank van Hellemondt said.

The French-born Di Tommaso was voted the team's player of the year last season by fans. Di Tommaso, who had one goal this season, played in Sunday's 1-0 victory over Ajax.

The Dutch soccer federation postponed Utrecht's game scheduled Saturday against Willem II Tilburg. No new date has been set.

He is survived by his wife and a daughter.

Dundee United 2-4 Celtic

Strachan hails fantastic football
Chisholm rues loss of early lead
Celtic replaced Hearts at the top of the Scottish Premier League for the first time this season after winning a six-goal thriller at Tannadice.
Chris Sutton headed into his own net to give Dundee United the lead but set up John Hartson to fire in the equaliser.

Sutton deflected in a Shaun Maloney drive only for Collin Samuel to hammer home and level for the home side.

But Alan Archibald deflected a Maloney corner into his own net and Stephen Pearson knocked in Celtic's fourth.

United's hopes of preventing Celtic taking over at the top on goal difference had suffered a blow before kick off.

David McCracken and David Fernandez both failing fitness tests, with Garry Kenneth coming into defence and Samuel up front.

But a loose pass back by Bobo Balde presented the home side with a chance after only four minutes.

Goalkeeper Artur Boruc attempted to prevent the ball going for a corner and was lucky to recover in time to block Peter Canero's attempt to slot the loose ball into the net.

Robson's inswinging corner flicked off the head of Sutton and into the Celtic striker's own net.

Celtic were stunned into action and Maloney had claims for a penalty waved away by the referee after a Kenneth challenge by the time the equaliser came after 17 minutes.

Gordon Strachan had given Hartson a starting place, despite Craig Beattie's part in the 5-0 midweek hammering of Motherwell.

And it was the Welsh striker who pounced after Sutton dummied a pass from Paul Telfer to drive the ball under Derek Stillie's despairing hand from 16 yards.

Stillie appeared slow to react but could do nothing when wrong-footed by Sutton's clever toe-poke to divert a long-range effort from Maloney into the net.

United were back level two minutes later when Canero found Samuel on the edge of the box and the Trinidadian turned Stephen McManus and his powerful drive appeared to deceive Boruc.

Another two minutes and another goal, Celtic restoring the lead when a Maloney corner was deflected into the net off the back of Archibald under pressure from Sutton.

Samuel threatened to restore parity early in the second half with a hitch-kick from 10 yards, but the striker's effort curled wide of the far post.

Jim McIntyre did well to fire on target from a difficult angle, but Boruc was well placed at the near post to block for a corner.

Stillie blocked a close-range diving header from Hartson but was left stranded when substitute Pearson pounced on a late ball across the face of his goal.

St Johnstone 5-1 Hamilton Accies
Paul Sheerin scored a double as St Johnstone leapfrogged Hamilton Accies into second spot in Division One after a first-half goal blitz.
Jason Scotland fired in the opener after a one-two with Steven Milne and Ryan Stevenson bulleted the second into the top corner from a narrow angle.

Sheerin added the third from the spot after Milne was felled before the midfielder slotted in his own second.

Pat Keogh headed in for Accies, but Goran Stanic replied from 35 yards.

Rangers v Porto
 RANGERS v PORTO

McLeish call for return to form
Rangers have no selection problems for their Champions League opener against Porto on Tuesday.
And manager Alex McLeish is unlikely to ring too many changes, despite a recent run of poor form in the SPL.

Porto are without star striker Benni McCarthy, who has been left behind by coach Co Adriaanse due to a breach of discipline at the club.

Former Tottenham striker Helder Postiga is injured and also misses out for the 2004 Champions League winners.

"Leaving McCarthy was a disciplinary measure," said Adriaanse. "Whoever does not obey leaves. Be it the best player or the best paid player."

"The team has to be more important than any player."

Adriaanse ordered McCarthy to sit out of Saturday's match against Rio Ave reportedly because the 27-year-old appeared at a training session wearing new hair extensions.

The Dutch coach barred players from wearing earrings or "unusual" hairstyles shortly after he took charge of the club in May.

Peter Lovenkrands and Francis Jeffers may be pushing for a place in the Rangers starting line-up after featuring as subs in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Falkirk.

However, the game probably comes to soon for recent signings Olivier Bernard and Filippo Maniero.

Dear God
Thank you for us winning the match and bringing the people of T&T together like in the old days.
It has been 6 years since I left the shores of T&T and I miss my home and my people. It has been sad reading the news everyday, when murder and kidnappings dominate the headlines, but Today has been the first in many years that I see good news on the front pages of the newspapers and it brings joy to my heart to see this.
Thank you for Stern finding his scoring shoes, thank you to the coach and his staff, thank you to all the players who worked their tails off, but most of all thank you for God #2 Latapy, you have blessed the sweet twin islands with someone truly special..

If beenie decide to play Yorke in mdifield and with half time gone, who would you rather see coming on from the bench: Stern, Scotland, or Sealey. I personally prefer if he start Stern and say Sealy, if it not working out then sub who ever pulling more stones. I rather see Stern start as I am not sure how effective he can be from the bench.  Kinda like the USA game. And if we really need a goal bad switch formation and have 3 forwards.
Just my opinion so do shoot me..

Dundee United 2-2 MyPa 47
MyPa win on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate

Chisholm in state of shock
Dundee United were dumped out of the Uefa Cup on the away goals rule after a late collapse against MyPa 47.

Following a 0-0 draw in Finland, United appeared to take control of the tie when midfielder Mark Kerr's 20-yard shot flew in after 15 minutes.

Collin Samuel blasted them further ahead on 29 minutes after Jim McIntyre had flicked on a Barry Robson cross.

But Adriano scored from the penalty spot on 74 minutes and MyPa's Brazilian striker lobbed in a second soon after.

A frantic finale saw United lay siege to the visitors' goal but they could not find a way through, despite good chances falling to Robson and Paul Ritchie.

United were guilty of throwing the game away and switching off, thinking the game was won.

There was an early scare when, with only 90 seconds gone, goalkeeper Derek Stillie carelessly smashed a clearance off Ritchie but when the ball fell to Adriano, the striker's lob was saved by the Tannadice number one.

But the home side soon gained the upper hand in midfield and got the breakthrough thanks to a wonderful goal.

Robson curled a free-kick from the right into the MyPa-47 penalty area and when the ball was headed clear, Kerr controlled it and quickly drove a powerful right-footed shot into the net.

And on the half hour United doubled their lead with a slick counter-attacking move.

Striker Collin Samuel was on target in the first half

Lee Miller sent Robson away on the left and when the former Inverness player swung his cross in to the box McIntyre glanced the ball on to Samuel at the back post, who slammed in a close-range shot.

In the 35th minute Miller forced a wonderful save from Janne Korhonen with a powerful 12-yard header seconds before Niklas Tarvajarvi's angled shot at the other end went narrowly past Stillie's right hand post.

After the interval Grant Brebner flashed a 25-yard volley high over the bar and Kerr shot wide from closer in.

In the 67th minute McIntyre beat his man cleverly in the visitors' penalty area but when he stood the ball up at the back post Kerr had to stretch to head the ball off the bar.

However, the game turned on its head when MyPa-47 got a penalty after Stuart Duff fouled Adriano just after Stillie had made a great save from Tero Taipale.

The Brazilian slotted the spot-kick away with great confidence and instantly a nervousness enveloped Tannadice.

And in the 81st minute there was disaster for United when Adriano beat the United offside trap and lobbed Stillie to draw the sides level.

A stunned United threw everything at the visitors and with six minutes to go Robson went clean through on goal but blasted his shot straight at Korhonen and then in the last minute Ritchie blasted over the bar from only 10 yards out.

Footballer dies in freak accident

Falkirk FC said it would be in touch with the player's relatives
A young footballer has been electrocuted at Falkirk FC's training ground after equipment he was carrying came into contact with power lines.
The 17-year-old is thought to have been carrying poles for nets which touched lines above the Little Kerse sports ground in Grangemouth on Friday.

He was pronounced dead by medical staff called to the scene.

Falkirk FC officials said there would be no comment until they had spoken to the player's next-of-kin.

An investigation has been launched following the incident.

Pole contact

Central Scotland Police said the player's identity would not be released until relatives have been informed.

The teenager is believed to have been carrying 20ft long poles for transportable nets used behind normal football goals to catch balls which miss the target.

One of the poles is thought to have come into contact with a cable.

Police said a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.

A spokesman for Scottish Power said: "A full investigation is under way into this incident. We would like to extend our sympathies to this unfortunate young man's next of kin."

Former Birmingham and Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has vowed to concentrate on playing and not partying after signing for Sydney FC last month.
He was released by Birmingham in April and has joined one of the eight clubs - seven from Australia and one from New Zealand - in the new A-League.

The 33-year-old told Channel Seven's Sportsworld: "I am not here to enjoy the nightlife and the scenery.

"And I do not feel I have anything left to prove."

The Trinidad and Tobago international added: "I went through that phase of having to prove myself at Manchester United.

"Now I want to concentrate on putting the ball in the back of the net and bringing out the people to enjoy the number one sport in the world."

Swindon Town Manager Andy King has moved to secure his first new signing of the summer, having agreed a deal with Bolton Wanderers midfielder Ricky Shakes.
The Town Boss has held talks with the player, who can also operate up front, and he will join Swindon Town on July 1st.
"I met Shakes at the New Zealand vs Australia game and we had a conversation. His agent is a good friend of mine, Tommy Langley. We have an agreement that he will be joining us for pre-season training on July 1st.
"He played for the reserves at the end of last season and did well and he is someone who I have been after for a little while. He did well when he was on loan at Bury last season and can also play out wide or up front, so could be a good addition for us," said King.

Arsenal rape suspect behind bars

Robin van Persie moved to London last year
Arsenal star Robin van Persie is to spend a third night in jail after being arrested on suspicion of rape.
The 21-year-old striker was held on Monday in the Dutch city of Rotterdam over the weekend.

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Reijnmond said it will be applying to a judge on Thursday to hold him for up to 14 more days.

The married player moved to the north London club from Dutch side Feyenoord for £2.75m last summer.

Van Persie has hired Dutch lawyer Abraham Moszkowicz who said his client was innocent.

International debut

A spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office said on Tuesday: "We are going to keep him in custody tonight [Wednesday] and we are going to ask a judge tomorrow to keep him in custody for a further 14 days pending investigations."

Last season Van Persie made his senior international debut for Holland and scored 10 goals for Arsenal as they went on to win the FA Cup and finish runners-up in the Premiership.

At the weekend he stressed his desire to stay at Arsenal long-term.

The club said it had no comment to make this stage.

Lawrence took a starring role for Trinidad and Tobago
Wrexham defender Dennis Lawrence starred for Trinidad and Tobago at the weekend as they beat Panama 2-0 in a World Cup qualifying match.
Coventry striker Stern John had given the home side a first-half lead at Port of Spain in the CONCACAF zone clash.

But Lawrence sealed the points in the 70th minute with an outstanding box-to-box counter-attack.

Lawrence burst out of defence, swapping passes with Dwight Yorke before sending the Panama goalkeeper the wrong way.

Beenhakker sparks T&T
Globetrotting Dutch-born boss Leo Beenhakker had a far happier debut than his Costa Rican counterpart by leading Trinidad & Tobago to their first final-round win at home in Port of Spain against Panama.

Promising to add some tactical acumen to the Soca Warriors finals hunt, Beenhakker seems to have located the proper balance during his two month’s at the helm. Coventry City strike Stern John – who failed to score in the three final round matches under former boss Bertille St. Clair – found the net in minute 34 to send the home fans into long-awaited hysterics.
Dennis Lawrence added another in the 70th minute to give the hosts their first three-point haul of the CONCACAF ‘hexagonal’. Added to the one they picked up in their April home draw with Costa Rica, things are suddenly looking a little sunnier for the picturesque dual-island nation as they stalk their first-ever appearance at the FIFA World Cup finals.

Warriors break duck on Beenhakker's debut.
By: Ian Prescott.

Trinidad and Tobago are firmly back in the 2006 World Cup qualifying picture after claiming a 2-0 victory over Panama at the Hasely Crawford Stadium yesterday, their first success in the final round.
The Warriors' maiden victory in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying means they leave here tomorrow in fourth place and with four points going into Wednesday's equally-important match against Mexico in Monterey.
A 34th minute strike by experienced forward Stern John and a second in the 71st minute from overlapping stopper Dennis Lawrence set up a fabulous win as the home team gave their best performance of the entire qualifying campaign.
Playing their first competitive game under Dutchman Leo Beenhakker, the T&T Warriors looked a significantly improved team against Panama, who themselves were quick, skilful and extremely dangerous on the counter-attack. The Warriors had marginally the better of the first half in what was a good game.
Struggling striker John might have had two goals in the first half alone when presented with excellent goal-scoring opportunities.
Carlos Edwards had an excellent game and was a constant threat down the Panamanian right where he breezed past Carlos Rivera-who later had to be substituted-at will.
Edwards set up John's first chance with a square pass on the platter in the 23rd minute after ghosting past Rivera, but John stabbed the excellent opportunity wide.
However, the Coventry City striker made amends 11 minutes later when scooping a low pass from striker partner Dwight Yorke past Panama keeper Donald Gonzales to give T&T their opening goal.
And a sea of red exploded into euphoria in a near-packed Hasely Crawford Stadium.
There was much to like about the Warriors' performance. Beenhakker had no surprises in his squad except including Kelvin Jack in goal at the expense of Clayton Ince, while Densil Theobald got the nod over Leslie Fitzpatrick at left midfield.
The Dutchman got a polished performance from all of his Warriors, who stroked the ball around the park like few in Trinidad and Tobago had seen in recent times. Panama always looked dangerous but credit must go to the T&T midfield and defence.
At the back, T&T battled doggedly, while Chris Birchall, Aurtis Whitley, Theobald and Edwards had excellent runs in midfield.
After a spell of second half pressure, a superb Trinidad and Tobago performance was sealed in the 71st minute with a second goal from lanky defender Lawrence.
The Wrexham player started the move in midfield and also finished it with aplomb.
Collecting in centre field, the overlapping stopper hit the ball wide to Yorke and then ran into space to collect the return pass atop the penalty area, where he eluded a retreating defender and stroked the ball low past keeper Gonzales. It completed a well-deserved victory for Trinidad and Tobago.
The road to 2006 FIFA World Cup™ in Germany will reach its midway point on Wednesday, 8 June 2005 as the CONCACAF Final Round continues with Match Day 5.
Panama will greet the USA at the Estadio Rommel Fernández in Ciudad de Panamá on Wednesday, while Guatemala visits Costa Rica at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San José and Mexico host Trinidad & Tobago at the Estadio Universitario in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.

Winger Figo is 'released' by Real

Figo's Premiership admission
Real Madrid have released Portuguese international winger Luis Figo, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.
The 32-year-old fell out with coach Wanderley Luxemburgo near the end of the season after being used as a sub as Real finished second behind Barcelona.

"The way they treated me when I was dropped wasn't right. They didn't tell me I wasn't going to play. It really hurt my pride," Figo told Marca.

The former World Player of the Year had a year left to run on his Real deal.

Figo has been a long-term target of Tottenham, who are in the market for a right-sided midfielder after selling Simon Davies to Everton for £3.5m.

Real's director of football Arrigo Sacchi had admitted on Punto Radio that Figo's future at the club was in the balance.

"I don't know whether he will stay. He's got a contract with us and I hope he stays because he could still be a great player for us and he is a great professional," said Sacchi.

"But I think his future depends more on him than it does on us. If he continues to feel down about his situation then it won't be good for him or for us."

Figo joined Real from arch-rivals Barcelona for a then world record fee of £37m in a sensational transfer in 2000.

Figo joined Real from arch-rivals Barcelona for a then world record fee of £37m in a sensational transfer in 2000.

Hislop insists he is not retiring

Shaka Hislop has denied reports that he is ready to quit football.
The 36-year-old keeper was released by Portsmouth at the end of the season and speculation had arisen that he was considering his future in the game.

"I'm not retiring," he told the Stellar Group website. "I've got several offers from clubs and will be discussing them with my agent in the next few weeks.

"I was disappointed to be released by Portsmouth but I still feel fit and well, with a hunger for the game."

Hislop's future at Fratton Park suffered after the departure of Harry Redknapp as manager and his last Pompey first-team appearance was on 15 January.

The Trinidad and Tobago international added: "I believe I am still good enough to play at the highest level and I think my performances for Portsmouth have shown that."

Warriors sharpens armoury in good show.
By: Anil Roberts - Guradian.

Well Done, Leo! On Wednesday I was pleasantly surprised by the greatly improved performance of our T&T Warriors.
The regular readers of this column will know that as a coach, when analysing the performance of a team or athlete in a practice match or warm -up event, I do not pay much attention to the actual end result, that is, it is of no consequence whether we win or lose.
The most important aspect is to determine whether or not there were any discernible changes in approach, attitude, tactics, cohesion and intelligent play.
No, I am not making excuses for our team having lost by 1-0 to Club Alianza Lima de Peru. There is simply no need to do such a thing.
Keep in mind, our main goal is to qualify for Germany 2006, while the immediate (short-term) goal is to obtain the full three points on June 4 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, versus Panama.
Remember that I, personally, and we as a people, have suffered through some of the most dismal performances by our national football team over the past 18 months.
Our Warriors had sunk to an all-time low, not only in a string of embarrassing results in meaningful matches, which included a 5-1 thrashing by Guatemala in a final round Concacaf World Cup qualifying match, but also a string of unimpressive, tactically and technically flawed performances in warm-up matches against footballing minnows, like St Vincent, Antigua, St Kitts, Haiti and a second-string Azerbaijan team.
The first half of last Wednesday’s encounter with the recently-crowned Peruvian club champion was simply a breath of fresh air. Though we did not score (however, a second look at Kenwyne Jones’ goal, which was somehow disallowed by the assistant referee for offside, would show that he in fact made a brilliantly-timed run, before tucking the ball into the net), we improved by leaps and bounds in many facets of the game.
Firstly, we kept the ball for extended periods. Keep in mind that when coach Beenhakker first arrived in T&T some seven weeks ago, I was lucky enough to conduct an hour-long exclusive interview with him on Spalk. He stated that the backbone of his coaching philosophy was quite simply—to keep the ball.
He said that when you have possession you are in control, you dictate the game and force the opposition to adjust to your game plan.
Obviously, I went to the stadium to see if, in such a short space of time, Leo would have been able to transpose this philosophy on his team. The short answer is WOW!
In the first half, by my estimation, we (T&T) had between 65 per cent to 70 per cent of possession to Alianza Lima’s 30 per cent to 35 per cent. This is a huge disparity and a great improvement.
However, more pertinently, Leo is having a definite effect on the team. There were times when our Warriors made 18 to 24 consecutive passes. We were switching the point of attack from flank to flank.
All that was missing was a player of incredible vision and ability to make the timely forward passes, whether they were through-balls or passes over the back of the defence. (Did someone say Latapy!…….Sorry I digress, Latapy stated categorically that he wants to focus on coaching. I can still dream).
The fact of the matter is that it was only seven months ago that St Vincent was knocking passes all around us in our home stadium, making us chase the ball all over the pitch. Do you remember? Sorry to bring back such harsh memories, but it was necessary to illustrate my point clearly.
To those who might be saying, but anybody could knock the ball around a Peruvian club team, I simply say, Alianza Lima was a better team than Azerbaijan, Haiti, St Kitts and St Vincent. Furthermore, the team had just recently won the league championship, so form was good.
Secondly, I noticed a marked improvement in the team’s ability to keep its shape, defensively. T&T was defending in numbers. Making it difficult for Alianza Lima to move the ball around. Any false touch, or poor control was punished by a timely tackle of a defender who was in the right position.
Alianza never looked like scoring in the first half (the goal was a well-taken “half-a-chance”.)
Defensive pressure was applied as a unit, beginning up front with the two strikers and continuing through the midfield into the defence.
In attack, T&T was able to maintain possession in the opponents defensive third. We have not been treated to this type of football since Bertille St Clair’s first stint as national coach during the 2000 Gold Cup.
This enabled us to maintain numbers in attack which provided players with several options, rather than simply having a lone figure in the box. Of course, now more imagination, creativity and individual brilliance is needed in order to score goals and create clear-cut chances.
Yes, we lost a practice game. Who cares? Marked improvements have been made in key areas, which augurs well for our team and our country. I look forward to the match on Wednesday with El Salvador to continue to witness the evolution of players into a team.

Well done Leo, keep it up!

Writer’s Note:
There was no use in analysing the second half because, as per usual in practice matches, it was only used to observe individual players. Consequently, an inordinate number of changes were made (everybody got a sweat) rendering fluent play impossible.
