De Spanner ... its history

FSC running a lot of programming ahead of the WC ... ah ketch a piece of ah interview with Rivellino and the history of what we know as 'the Spanner' jumped out.

Anybody ketch dat? I had NO clue. He said he saw a player doing it and then he perfected it ... Pele confirmed. Did a lil digging based on the phonetics of the last name of the player he mentioned (he called him 'the Japanese') ... and stumbled upon this: the player is SERGIO ECHIGO ... documented as being the inventor of the Spanner.

In Portuguese it's called the 'drible elastico'.

yeah but something about a standing spanner more nasty to me than ah full speed.. with a full speed spanner, yuh could get away with a half spanner and use speed to get by the defender, but with the standing, is ah full wrench to loss the defender..

like the ones in that rivelino video there, dem is some dutty ones from a stand up position... especially the last one.

The most popular is the Outside inside...But there's also the Inside Outside.. Never seen it done outside of Trinidad.

Ah could tell de younger posters does get up earliest every day.... how on earth nobody eh mention Leroy name yet ? All yuh tink dey does call it spanner anywhere else but Trinidad and Tobago ? Yes other countries have players who were and are doing it ..but it eh name spanner !
We older folks know is Leroy Spann dat it name after here ....inside and outside leroy Spann was the master at it ..dats why it is known as de spanner in T&T.
I have also seen timothy haynes demonstrate it ..in de air !

YES!!!! The Air Spanner.  I didn't know it was Leroy it ws named after.  But yes.. The air spanner is wicked, That is worst than getting it on the ground.
