Based on 1998 Qualifiers, HOPE REMAINS!!!
« on: March 28, 2005, 07:00:12 PM »
 ???

Did some research because I refused to believe that a country's dreams could be dashed so early. After two games then (1998) Jamaica had only one point, and was going into game #3 at home after a thrashing (as T&T got on Saturday), they lost 6-0 to Mexico. They drew game #3 at home, so with a win on Wednesday, even 1-0, we'll be one point ahead of where Jamaica was in teh buildup to 1998. I like to see the glass half full rather than half empty.

2 things:

1 - Jamaica had a real coach

2 - He went the controversial "UB40" route which worked spectacularly for him.

We have neither at the moment.

However..you are correct.  8 games to go.  Anything is possible.

Probable?  Unlikely

Possible?  Maybe...with a shove

yeah but Jamaica's first 3 matches were against the 3 best teams in the hex.
played USA at home - draw 0-0 (we lost)
played Mexico away - lost 6-0 (we lost to GUATEMALA by a similar score)
played Costa Rica away - lost 3-1 (we will see what happens but even IF we win it is a home game)

Jamaica had a much tougher opening 3 games than we.  Not to be a hater but unless we beat Costa Rica we are much worse off than they were at this point, having lost to one of the so called weaker teams by such a large margin.  Note that they went on to beat Costa Rica at home 1-0 and they only lost TWO games in the entire Hex - we done lost 2 already and we ent even reach Azteca yet.

yes, Simoes is a different class coach to BSC, but Simoes ride the same wave that T&T did 8 years before, i.e. he had a team of mainly locals, always at his disposal for a very long time. Kinda like the Strike Squad days, and maybe like Guatemala now.
Add to this a peak in the right time of a few locals with real talent, plus a forward who got into the form of his life (Burton).

We had similar stuff in 89, ie Latas and maybe Leonson Lewis.
For all intents and purposes, T&T was a wc quality team in 89, so we kinda equal to Ja on that front, plus we qualify a youth team right after on d momentum. Ja did the same...See the pattern developing here?
Now, after both countries had their honeymoon period, and players start getting ship out, and other countries start taking them serious, look how both of us ketching we tail.
Ja going through now exactly what T&T went thru in 94 and 98, and even 2002, with such a string team on paper, perhaps one of the top 2 or 3 in CONCACAF, yet fail miserably.
Its alsmot like carbon copy, ie the development, just we 6-8 years ahead of them.

What we need is:
1) a change in tactics and selection
2) a player from T&T to ketch the form of his life
3) and some good ole fashion luck!

Its was more good coaching  that helped jamaica in 1998 .Simones recurited 3 UB40 but they were just average players in the english   first division who came and tried out for the reggae boyz

The UB40 were average in England but they brought a fundamental tactical knowledge to the Jamaican squad which is lacking in Caribbean countries.  Remember in 1995 when Norway came on their brief tour of the Caribbean, (they played Jamaica and T&T)?

They played jamaica to a 1-1 draw.  After the game, in a radio interview, the head coach of Norway was asked what he thought of the jamaican players, his reply was:
"On the ball very good, off the ball not so goodThe Beatles brought a greater understanding of tactical organization to a team that hadn't much idea.  Previously, Jamiaca's results weren't very encouraging.
