JOHANNESBURG, June 19 (Reuters) - Egypt’s players returned from their shock Confederations Cup win over world champions Italy to find some of their hotel rooms had been burgled, South African police said on Friday.

“The SAPS can confirm that at about 1am (2300 GMT) this morning, Friday 19 June 2009, members of the Egyptian team reported that their wallets containing cash were missing from their hotel rooms,” police spokeswoman Sally de Beer said in a statement.

“Five members of the team were affected. It must be stressed that they were not present in the hotel rooms at the time of the incident.

“The South African Police Service will take all measures possible, including liaising and cooperating with other role players, to prevent a recurrence of an incident of this nature.”

The Egyptian team were staying at the Protea Hotel Wanderers in Johannesburg and in a statement, the company said: “Protea Hotels has strict security measures in place where electronic access control of the rooms and safes are monitored.

“We are working very closely with the local law enforcement bodies to get to the bottom of this unfortunate incident.”

South Africa’s high crime rate is one of the main challenges facing organisers of the 2010 World Cup, with the Confederations Cup seen as a dress rehearsal the event.

I know criminals are very sophisticated and savvy in this technological age that we live in, but I imagine that the South African police should be questioning some of the people working at the hotel.

Despite recent crime, FIFA trusts local security

After a pair of security issues in South Africa over the past few days, FIFA said Saturday that it trusts local authorities to keep fans safe at both the Confederations Cup and at next year’s World Cup.

The hotel rooms of five Egyptian players were robbed while the team was playing Italy on Thursday at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, and four visiting rugby fans were mugged shortly after their arrival in the country’s financial capital from England.

“Security is an absolute key issue and, as you know, we trust the South African authorities to secure both the Confederations Cup and the World Cup,” FIFA spokesman Nicolas Maingot said.

The South African media is claiming that an alleged robbery from the hotel rooms of some Egypt players on Thursday evening was nothing to do with burglars but with prostitutes. 

On Friday, the Pharaohs’ team manager Inas Mazhar reported that $2,400 US had been stolen from the rooms of some players on the night the African champions defeated Italy 1-0 in the 2009 Confederations Cup.   

City Press said on Sunday morning that police sources confirmed that there were no signs of forced entry and added that CCTV footage showed scantily-clad women moving around a number of hotel rooms during what seemed to be a party. 

“The players must explain why their rooms were not broken into and why their room safes were not tempered with but they still lost money,“ an unnamed police source told City press.   

Sunday World, another Johannesburg publication, quoted a police officer as saying, “we have confirmed that some of the players brought prostitutes whom they picked up on Oxford Road to their hotel rooms and we have strong suspicions that they were cleaned by ladies of the night.”   

Security guards who guard the hotel told the same newspaper that: “when they (the players) were robbed, they pointed their dirty fingers at hotel staff – that’s nonsense.” 

The Egyptian team spokesperson was unavailable for comment.

Brazil 2nd nation to report robbery

Brazil became the second nation at the Confederations Cup to say it was robbed at the team’s hotel.

Brazil coach Dunga revealed the robbery on Sunday. Team spokesman Rodrigo Paiva said “a jacket and some money” disappeared from some of the rooms at the Centurion Lake hotel, just outside Pretoria.

They think it happened when the team went to a safari on Friday, and Paiva says Brazil contacted authorities about the incident.
