Beenhakker & company checks out Pro League action.
By: Shaun Fuentes.

National Senior Team Head Coach Leo Beenhakker wasted no time in getting his first up close look of players in this country when he attended Saturday’s Pro League encounter between Vibe CT 105 W Connection and Tobago United at the Ato Boldon Stadium.
A day after their arrival in Trinidad, Beenhakker and his two assistants Theo de Jong and Wim Rijsbergen were on the scene with the latter two attending the match between National Quarries North East Stars and CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh at the Sangre Grande Recreation Ground.
In the squad called for the first training session at the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 10:30 am on Monday, nine players are from Jabloteh, five from W Connection and one from Tobago United.
And after viewing the clash in Sangre Grande, Theo de Jong and Wim Rijsbergen added National Under 20 player Kendell Jagedeosingh and Anthony Wolfe to the training squad.
Meantime, experienced home-based pro Angus Eve said he expected that Beenhakker would get a group of players hungry to work under him from Monday.
“We possess a lot of talented players who I think don’t get the type of experience to really show themselves up and now that they are getting a first time opportunity to work under the new coach I am pretty sure that they will be all eager to do well under him,” Eve told TTFF Media on Sunday. “We know that several of the recent players on the team from the overseas leagues are going to be coming back later in the month but as of now, it’s a fresh slate and the coach is going to be making judgments on what he sees and not just on what he’s heard. Hopefully everyone can make that sort of contribution to assist him in making the right decisions in terms of team selection for the next two games against Panama and Mexico.”
“None of us have worked with him before but we all know what’s been happening and we know his reputation. He’s coming with loads of experience and pedigree and hopefully he can transfer that onto our football. We are a country which has players with good technique and skill but we need some organization and hopefully he can bring that to the team now,” Eve said adding that he didn’t think it was a situation where the team will be needing to start from scratch again because of the fact that several of the players which drew 0-0 with Costa Rica in the last qualifier should be able to show themselves up again with Beenhakker at the helm.
The Dutch-born coach has also indicated that he hopes to see the list of overseas-based pros by May 18 in order to have a final team by the closing two weeks leading up the match against Panama at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Saturday June 4.

Squad For Training:

Derek Phillips (Shamrock Rovers), Densill Theobold (Caledonia AIA Fire), Keon Daniel (St Clair Coaching School), Gary Glasgow (Unattached), Hasely Holder (Unattached), Anton Pierre (Defence Force), Dwayne Jack (Tobago United), Jan Michael Williams, Arnold Dwarika, Andre Toussaint, Kendall Davis, Atiba Charles ( W Connection), Keyeno Thomas, Nigel Daniel, Angus Eve, Duarance Williams, Kerry Baptiste, Trent Noel, Aurtis Whitley, Michael Celestine, Nigel Pierre (CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh), Carlon Murray (Unattached), Kevin Graham, Derek King (Joe Public), Radhanfan Abu Bakr (Queens Royal College), Anthony Wolfe, Kendall Jagedeosingh (National Quarries North East Stars).

25 players called up for Beenhakker’s first training camp.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation has invited twenty five players for the first training camp to be conducted by recently appointed National Senior Team head coach Leo Beenhakker beginning at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Monday morning.
The players, selected on the advice of technical director Lincoln Phillips and the TTFF Technical Advisory Committee will move into a three-day live in camp at the Dr Joao Havelange Centre of Excellence, Macoya on Monday. On Sunday they will undergo a medical evaluation by Team Doctor Terrance Babwah.
Beenhakker arrived in Trinidad on Friday with his two assistants Theo de Jong and Wim Rijsbergen to begin training ahead of the June 4 World Cup qualifying match against Panama at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Both his assistants played with the 1974 and 1978 Dutch World Cup teams.
Among the players called for the initial training sessions include CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh midfielder Angus Eve, Aurtis Seaton, Nigel Pierre, Keyeno Thomas, Daurance Williams and Michael Celestine. Regular national team midfielder Densill Theobald of Caledonia AIA Fire is also in there with Anton Pierre, Gary Glasgow, Arnold Dwarika and Joe Public’s Derek King also getting the call. Irish-based defender Derek Phillips is expected to arrive home for the sessions.
National Under 20 players Keon Daniel, Karlon Murray, Radanfan Abu Bakr and goalkeeper Thorne Holder have also been invited to join the camp.
“We will be using the next two weeks to get all the knowledge about the players who are playing here. We will be attending some of the matches. We will talk with their coaches and work closely with the players to get as much as we can out of the next two weeks,” Beenhakker told TTFF Media ahead of his first session.
“We need to know exactly who is who and then after that we will have most of the players abroad who will be finished with their Leagues coming over to join the preparations. We will have about ten days with them. We have already met with some of them and seen them play for their clubs. Right now it’s not a situation where we will still have five weeks before the Panama game but rather one where will only have five weeks before what I think are two key matches in this qualification bid and therefore we have to make use everyday within this period.”
Some of the overseas-based pros are expected to start arriving this month including Crewe Alexandra goalie Clayton Ince who arrives with new English-born midfielder Christopher Birchall on May 10 and Scottish-based midfielder Brent Rahim is expected in around the same time.
Beenhakker has stated that with the English and Scottish season being over by mid-May, he wants to have a look at all the overseas pros in training by at least May 18. Two training games are carded to be played inside the last ten days of May.

Squad For Training:

Derek Phillips (Shamrock Rovers), Densill Theobold (Caledonia AIA Fire), Keon Daniel (St Clair Coaching School), Gary Glasgow (Unattached), Hasely Holder (Unattached), Anton Pierre (Defence Force), Dwayne Jack (Tobago United), Jan Michael Williams, Arnold Dwarika, Andre Toussaint, Kendall Davis, Atiba Charles (W Connection), Keyeno Thomas, Nigel Daniel, Angus Eve, Duarance Williams, Kerry Baptiste, Trent Noel, Aurtis Whitley, Michael Celestine, Nigel Pierre (CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh), Carlon Murray (Unattached), Kevin Graham, Derek King (Joe Public), Radhanfah Abu Bakr (Queens Royal College).
Toussaint nets treble in 7-0 W Connection win.
By: Nigel Simon - Guardian
.

Andre Toussaint fired in three second-half goals to inspire VIBE CT 105 W Connection to a 7-0 romp over Tobago United for win number six in as many matches in the T&T Professional Football League’s Senior Division at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva yesterday.
Toussaint scored in the 56th, 81st (penalty) and 86th minutes to join clubmate Gefferson Goulart as the league’s top scorer with seven goals each.
St Lucian Earl Jean, the team’s captain added a pair of his own, in the fourth and 59th minutes while midfielder Brenton De Leon (51st minute) and Goulart (85th) were the other scorers for the “Savonetta Boys” who now have maximum 18 points.
The win also equalled the club’s best league start of 1999 —its first year as a professional club.
Caledonia AIA/Fire stayed second on the table with 10 points—thanks to a goal each from Devon Modeste, his third of the season, and Kevin Baptiste to beat United Petrotrin 2-0.
Champion side National Quarries North-East Stars revived its ambitions for a second straight title with a 2-1 win over struggling CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh on the Sangre Grande Recreation Ground in the day’s other match.
Anthony Wolfe got both goals for “Stars “in the first-half, after Jabloteh defender Ansil Elcock had given his team the lead.

Yesterday’s PFL Senior Division results:

Ah neva see any article or press release saying dat dey were released by de Chinese clubs, but when Dwarika signed wit Beijing Guoan (last March), de contract was only for one year. Ah guess dey chose not to renew it. Since Dwarika was wit W-Connection before he went tuh China, he probably jes fall back een.

Glasgow was also on a one-year contract wit Guangzhou Xiangxue. He broke his leg last August in a friendly against Guatemala and I doh know if he ever went back China.

Last season, ah think the China League ended in dispute. It seemed that sometime around October - November they cancelled the season. There was also some concern that teams were losing lots of money. Whether or not those events had any effect on their contracts, I doh know.

Chinese soccer striving to survive
By Chen Xiangfeng (China Daily)
Updated: 2004-12-04 10:08

The next time China's football team can play in a major international tournament is four years away at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

China's Olympic team pose for a group photo. [newsphoto]
What makes things more miserable is that the Olympic appearance results from home advantage - the host team gets an automatic spot without having to play any qualifiers.

Everyone can take a deep breath because China do not have to fight with Asian rivals like they did before.

The world's most populous country failed to qualify for this year's Athens Games and last month lost out in the race to qualify for the 2006 World Cup to unfancied Kuwait.

With a footballing history of more than 2,000 years, China's first World Cup appearance came only two years ago.

Its World Cup debut was tarnished by the loss of all three games in the group stage and failure to score a single goal.

Fans are afraid that they will have to wait for China to host the event before they make another World Cup appearance.

Humiliating knock-out

China's 7-0 thrashing of Hong Kong last month was not enough to send them through to the next round of Asian World Cup qualifiers.

Kuwait won the group and advanced by routing Malaysia 6-1, giving Kuwait a one goal better goal difference than China.

China's head coach Arie Haan was immediately released from his contract with the China Football Association (CFA) and returned home, marking another failure in the CFA's policy of choosing foreign coaches.

Only Bora Milutinovic achieved brief success for China by leading the team to the 2002 World Cup finals.

A longer wait is simply unbearable for fans who have lost interest, and are running out of tolerance with domestic football.

Even Haan, a midfielder in the Dutch team of the 1970s that reached two World Cup finals, said the recent turmoil in China's top professional league played a role in the national team's slump.

In October, seven of the 12 clubs in China's Super League, including Dalian, Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, Sichuan, Shenzhen and Liaoning, commonly known as G-7, united to challenge the CFA, urging the association to reform the league.

The G-7, headed by seven-time league champions Dalian Shide, criticized the CFA for lack of transparency and acute corruption.

"Of course it had an influence on the national team, the players," said Haan.

"A lot of players are not being paid, a lot of players don't want to play because they're not satisfied with the circumstances, the referees."

The 10-year-old professional league, replaced by the Super League this year, was hampered by lackluster performances and poor commercial success, despite heavy investment from club runners and the government.

Both Beijing and Dalian threatened to boycott league matches in October while Liaoning and Shenzhen struggled to pay their players on time.

With the recent drug scandal involving Liaoning's goalkeeper Liu Jiansheng, who is believed to be connected to social drug use and match fixing, China's football is on the edge of collapse.

Asian Cup emotion

But Haan insisted he had something to feel proud of.

"This year, we only lost two matches. In the final of the Asia Cup we lost to Japan, and afterwards we lost to Kuwait," he was quoted as saying by the Xinhua news agency.

"That should not be considered a bad result."

His remarks should be considered partly right.

Compared to a whole year's chaos and disappointment, 2004 Asian Cup left fans with some fond memories, though not the final against Japan.

China was unbeaten in the group matches and then gave fans a surprise semi-final victory by beating favourite's Iran in a penalty shootout.

But title hopes were dashed by arch-rivals Japan who rallied to beat China 3-1 in the final.

Some fans refused to leave the stadium after the match, protesting the result by shouting and throwing bottles and garbage.

More than 6,000 security staff were deployed in and around the stadium, with riot police, soldiers and SWAT teams in position to prevent crowd trouble. The tough measures proved insufficient and some fans vented their wrath by attacking a vehicle and rioting.

But runner-up is still an excellent result for China as the team advanced to the final for only the second time. It lost 2-0 to Saudi Arabia in the 1984 final.

Looking to the West

With hopes of reaching the 2006 World Cup vanished, CFA officials are vowing to take action - and hope hosts Germany can offer some help.

A specially-assembled group, called the 2008-Star Team consisting of 27 young and promising Chinese football players, will undergo a two-year-long training session at Bad Kissingen.

The talented 27, selected from the nation's best youth players aged between 15-19, are expected to form the core of the 2008 Olympic team.

Eckhard Krautzun, a former German Olympic team member with a 35-year-long coaching career, has been appointed head coach.

This is not the first time China has sent it's footballers overseas for training.

Besides, many top players are beginning to see Europe as a way to turn round their careers.

China's Footballer of the Year Zheng Zhi,the national team's playmaker, has just completed trials at Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin. Teenaged defender Du Wei from Shanghai Shenhua has been in contact with a number of German clubs while another international midfielder, Zhao Junzhe from Liaoning, has received an invitation from Scottish Premier League giants Glasgow Celtic.

Young goalkeeper Song Junmin from Tianjin and national team captain Li Weifeng are also planning to move abroad.

Women's hope

China's women footballers have also struggled to find form.

The Athens Games began in a disastrous 8-0 rout to Germany but the year ended offering a glimmer of hope as the U-19 youth team were runners-up in the World Women's Championship.

It is hope for the future of the women's national team, who won silver at the Atlanta Olympics and finished runners-up to the US at the 1999 World Cup, after losing their shine due to the retirement of veterans.

They were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the 2003 Women's World Cup, and then at this year's Athens Olympics the team suffered their biggest setback after being eliminated from the group phase. Its 8-0 loss to Germany is the worst in the team's history.

Head coach Zhang Haitao resigned immediately after the Games and the women's team is still looking for a new manager.

With the youth side achieving an unexpected second-placed result, head coach Wang Haiming become one of the favourites to take over the job from Zhang.

Whoever will take the helm, it is believed some emerging stars from the U-19 team will be added to the national team, carrying hopes of helping China return to the world's elite.

Real nice squad. I like the fact that some of the under 20 players in with the training squad. I hope they remain at least training with the senior team.

That under 20 team should be in training for the Olympics coming up ...... most if not all should be eligible for the Olympics.
