Car Rental or Train
« on: February 14, 2006, 08:50:08 AM »
fellas i need some advice.....I have a posse of 5 people and i going germany for 12 days.....would it be better to take a train to all the games, or rent a car for the time.....

i was reading other posts and I found that the german twin rail pass is 300 euros(for 2 people 2nd class)....so if I have five people the total cost must be more than 750 euros, and that's a train pass for only 4 days...i'll prolly want to travel around on the other days...so wouldn't it be better to rent a car?  if so, can anyone tell me of any economical car rental places in germany....

thanks

With that many a car may be easier, cheaper and more flexible.
All the usual rentals exist: budget, avis, hertz, national, but also check sixt http://www.e-sixt.de/ for a "Meitwagen" ("meat wagon") lol

Hi,
I am German and stay in Germany. My family is running a hotel near Nürnberg (Nuremberg) and the Nürnberg (Nuremberg) soccer stadium, we do have already a lot of bookings from TnT. What I would recommend to you and what I have recommended me guests:

For five people take a car, but check the companys. In our town we have a car rent with cars from 90,00 till 120,00 Euro per week. Europcar or Avis will charge approx. 350,00 Euro for one week.

Do not buy the train pass. The train pass is just for people how take the train the whole year. If you prefer the train check the website   www.bahn.de    the offical website for the German trains. On the left site you can change in English language.

Check my homepage www.hotel-seerose.de  / email: info@hotel-seerose.de  if you still need rooms for your stay. We have rooms from 51,00 till 83,00 single and 81,00 till 148,00 Euro douple.

Welcome in Germany

You have to go under the category "Jeep/Cabrio"

Their fleet does have several convertibles listed. If you click "PKW-Flotte" (passenger car fleet) they have:
VW Beetle Cabrio
Renault Megane Cabrio
BMW Z4, Audi TT Roadster
BMW 3er Cabrio, Audi TT Roadster
Mercedes Benz CLK Cabrio

Here's what I got for June 11-June13

Tarif:
 Jeeps / Cabrios - Tagestarif

Abholung (pick up): Düsseldorf Airport - 11.6.2006 / 12:00
Rückgabe (return): München Airport - 13.6.2006 / 12:00

Wählen Sie aus der Angebotsliste (choose from the following list)

Cabrios
 â‚¬ 198,00*  VW Beetle Cabrio
 â‚¬ 254,00*  Renault Megane Cabrio
 â‚¬ 284,00*  0DR/0PSGR
 â‚¬ 294,00*  BMW 318/320 Cabrio
 â‚¬ 318,00*  Mercedes Benz SLK
â‚¬ 350,00*  Mercedes Benz CLK Cabrio

Possibly, that happened to me in Puerto Rico. I just picked those real quick to see what would come up, but you can check other locations and dates.

For car rental, you might want to look at company called InterRent (see The World Cup in Germany - Car hire)... they're a no frills subsidiary of Europcar (which is in turn 100% owned by VW).  They only hire out VW Golfs, they only have secondary locations and the cars have an InterRent ad down the side ... BUT, the hire prices start at 8.99 euros a day!  I've hired one for 22 days (with fully comprehensive insurance as an added extra) for 422 euros.

As for trains, the standard 'Bahncard' is indeed intended for German commuters, but there are several other passes you can look at - different passes apply depending on whether you are based in T&T or in Europe.  The details are listed here: The World Cup in Germany - Travel / Rail.

Car hire from airports is always more expensive. Guaranteed. However there are some companies that if you pre-book will actuallly come and pick you up from the airport. Think inter-rent are one of those
