Sean Daniel wins Young Kings title
By ROBIN MORAIS

SEAN DANIEL is this year’s Young Kings Calypso Monarch.

He won the title from a field of 14 contestants on Monday night at the St James Amphitheatre.

Apart from the judges, Daniel won lusty rounds of applause from the large crowd for his tune "True Government."

The large crowd of kaiso lovers at the Amphitheatre in St James felt he had put on a sterling performance to take the title.

His composition dealt with the need for political leaders to have God as their real leader in governing the affairs of the people.

The 21st annual Young Kings competition was organised by the National Action Cultural Committee.

Second place went to Organiser with his hilarious "Trinbago Yankee" which had the crowd in side-splitting laughter. Third place went to the National Calypso Queen, Karene Asche, with her pulsating "Spirit of Fear."

Fourth position was copped by Jervae Caesar singing "Caribbean Woman," and fifth place was taken by Duane O’Connor with "Stand Trinidad and Tobago."

Young calypsonian Roderick Gordon took the sixth position with "Not in Trinbago," and seventh place went to Ras Kommanda with "Rae Ann."

Michael John’s passionate plea for national unity in "Divide and Rule" earned him 12th place in a three-way tie with Lima Calbio and Abbi Blackman.

A number of the calypsos dealt with national unity, the current crime problems affecting the nation, spirituality, corruption and the abuse of power by those in authority.

Despite Richard Mendez giving a good performance of his calypso "Mr Goodman Children," a tune generally appreciated by the audience, he failed to place in the top 12.

The same could also be said for Revealer (Patrick Lewis) who sang "Morality Gone" which dealt with the drastic decline of basic morality in the country over the years.

The results of the top 12 finalists in the Young Kings competition 2006 are as follows:

1st place-Sean Daniel — "True Government"

2nd place-Organiser — "Trinbago Yankee"

3rd place- Karene Asche — "Spirit of Fear"

5th place- Duane O’Connor — "Stand Trinidad and Tobago"

6th place- Roderick Gordon — "Not in Trinbago"

7th place Ras Kommanda —"Ree Ann"

8th place- Marva McKenzie — "Revelation Time"

11th place- Walter Taylor — "Warrior Song"
