I wouldn't be too worried about friendly results vs European nations, they really don't take them seriously. The US is a good team but vs a top 20 team in a real tournament they'll still be chasing the ball, and struggling. In 2013 they beat Germany and Italy, we saw how average they looked in the World Cup.

There is an element of truth to this ... BUT, Germany does not like losing at home. Period. Slightly different dynamic if this game had been on the road, especially in a neutral location.

Germany didn't even leave first gear. The first half the US couldn't see the ball and Germany just passing the ball around like it was them alone on the field. Bradley and all was frustrated just walking around cause they were chasing shadows. Germany then appeared to lose interest in the game.

Hashtag Brazil ;D

Dunga did some drastic reshuffling. Kaka and Lucas Moura recalled and Thiago Silva and Coutinho dropped.
To me Coutinho and Thiago Silva should be in there.

Kaka, Lucas Moura and Hulk return to Brazil squad

http://www.goal.com/en/news/584/brazil/2015/08/13/14404962/kaka-lucas-moura-and-hulk-return-to-brazil-squad?ICID=HP_BN_11

The trio are joined by newcomers Alisson, Douglas Santos and Lucas Lima for the Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour clashes with Costa Rica and USA

Kaka, Hulk and Lucas Moura have will all return to the Brazil squad for September's Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour matches with Costa Rica and USA, coach Dunga announced on Thursday.

Zenit forward Hulk and PSG winger Lucas Moura are in line for their first international appearances since Dunga's July 2014 appointment.

33-year-old Orlando City man Kaka has 89 caps for the Selecao but was left out of Dunga's squad for this year's Copa America, with his last appearance arriving in October last year as Brazil saw off Japan 4-0.

Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho was a surprise omission following his fine form for Liverpool, with Dunga insisting that direct replacement Kaka offers more experience to the squad.

Internacional goalkeeper Alisson, Atletico Mineiro full-back Douglas Santos and Santos midfielder Lucas Lima are all in line to make their debuts for their country.

Captain Neymar has been included on standby with suspension ruling him out of Brazil's first two World Cup qualifying games, against Chile and Venezuela, in October.

Key first-team players Danilo, Luiz Gustavo and Oscar all return after missing the Copa America through injury.

Coach Dunga has led Brazil to ten consecutive Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour victories since his July 2014 appointment, but is looking to bounce back following a disappointing quarter-final finish in this year’s Copa America.

The five-time world champions will meet Costa Rica at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ, on September 5 before travelling to the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA, for a clash with USA on September 9.

The double-header will be Brazil's final two fixtures before the starOctober sees them kick off their qualification campaign for the World Cup in 2018 with games against Chile and Venezuela.

Brazil squad:

Goalkeepers: Jefferson (Botafogo), Marcelo Grohe (Gremio), Alisson (Internacional).

Defenders: David Luiz (PSG), Marquinhos (PSG), Miranda (Inter), Gabriel Paulista (Arsenal), Dani Alves (Barcelona), Filipe Luis (Atletico Madrid), Danilo (Real Madrid), Douglas Santos (Atletico Mineiro).

Midfielders: Luiz Gustavo (Wolfsburg), Fernandinho (Manchester City), Elias (Corinthians), Ramires (Chelsea), Oscar (Chelsea), Willian(Chelsea), Lucas Lima (Santos), Kaka (Orlando City).

Forwards: Roberto Firmino (Liverpool), Neymar (Barcelona), Lucas Moura (PSG), Hulk (Zenit), Douglas Costa (Bayern Munich).

CONCACAF related friendly: Costa Rica v Uruguay, Sept. 8, 2015

https://www.youtube.com/v/c0ygSdvUvDE

Costa Rica 1-0 Uruguay

Costa Rica ends year-long winless streak with 1-0 victory over Uruguay
By Michael Krumholtz (The Tico Times).

It took head coach Óscar Ramírez just two games to get Costa Rica back in the win column.

Ramíez, who was hired just three weeks ago, helped Costa Rica end a brutal winless streak with a 1-0 win against two-time World Cup champion Uruguay on Tuesday night at San José’s National Stadium. In its previous 10 games, the national team was 0-5-5 headed into the friendly, not having won since last October.

“La Sele” netted the game’s lone goal when Joel Campbell lofted a pass into the box that captain Bryan Ruíz put home with a header in the seventh minute. Though he was relegated to the bench for most of Saturday’s friendly against Brazil, Campbell started at striker over Marco Ureña and showed why he remains Costa Rica’s best option at the position with his beautiful touch pass.

In the second half, Campbell had three more opportunities to score, the last of which came in the 67th minute when he got behind the Uruguay defense but had his shot veer just right of the far post.

“Not to disrespect Uruguay, but we had chances to score at least one more goal,” Ramírez said in the post-game news conference.

Costa Rica, which quadrupled Uruguay’s shots on goals in the first half, dodged a scare when goalie Esteban Alvarado made an excellent save to stop a Christian Stuani header from going into the goal.

Playing at home for the first time since March, when it tied with Paraguay, La Sele looked more comfortable and fluid than it has all year. Costa Rica controlled possession from the beginning while staying aggressive on offense, slicing through a very good Uruguayan defense that includes top-flight talents like Diego Godín and Martín Cáceres. Even though it took advantage early with the one-goal lead, Costa Rica kept pressing the Uruguayans on their side, nearly expanding upon the lead with a number of close calls at net orchestrated by Campbell, Johan Venegas, and Celso Borges.

Before the match, Ramírez said his team would need to start dictating pace if it expected to beat the world’s best, almost foretelling exactly how Costa Rica would play against Uruguay.

“We want to do what we do best and control possession, maintain defensive balance when the situation calls for it and keep feeding the ball back to ourselves,” he said.

Even before Tuesday night’s game, Costa Rica’s defense looked to be immediately improved under Ramírez. The coach’s first game on the sidelines, on Saturday, ended in a 1-0 loss to a Brazil team that embarrassed the United States 4-1 on Tuesday night. After being plagued by miscommunications and break downs on the defensive end for so long, La Sele’s ability to hold back an aggressive Brazilian front gave fans plenty of reason for optimism. Even without key pieces like Keylor Navas and Bryan Oviedo, the defense overcame an early mistake on Brazil’s goal to seal down that side of the field and look cohesive.

Alvarado started in goal on Tuesday night after Alajuelense’s Patrick Pemberton played valiantly against Brazil on Saturday. The 6 ft. 4 in. goalkeeper continued his solid play from July’s Gold Cup while shutting down an Uruguayan attack that was without its best offensive threats in Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez. This is the third time that Costa Rica has beat Uruguay in the past 15 months, beginning with the 3-1 win in the World Cup group stages that sparked the Ticos’ run to the quarterfinals.

La Sele will next take the field again on Oct. 8 when it plays South Africa in a home friendly.

CONCACAF related friendly: Mexico v Argentina, Sept. 8, 2015

Mexico 2-2 Argentina

Mexico allow two late goals in 2-2 friendly draw against Argentina in final CONCACAF Cup tune-up
MLSsoccer.com

Two late goals by superstars Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi helped Argentina rally from a two-goal deficit to tie Mexico 2-2 in a Tuesday friendly at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Tex.

Mexico went ahead courtesy of an 18th-minute penalty by Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and a 70th-minute tally by Hector Herrera, his second goal for El Tri in as many games, but Mexico's defense could not hold on late. Substitutes Ezequiel Lavezzi and Aguero linked up while the Mexican defense faltered, allowing Aguero to tap in a shot to narrow the deficit, before Messi scored an audacious goal by taking an aerial ball from Aguero, turning and firing past Mexico 'keeper Moises Munoz on the volley just before the end of regular time.

Munoz had made two key stops earlier in the game to preserve Mexico's lead, but in the end, Argentina overcame their early finishing woes to grab the draw.

For Mexico, the game was the final tune-up before the momentous CONCACAF Cup playoff against the US national team on Oct. 10 at the Rose Bowl, and comes on the heels of a wild 3-3 friendly draw against Trinidad & Tobago last week.

On the bright side for El Tri fans, Mexico appear to be getting in a scoring rhythm under interim head coach Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti after a largely difficult Gold Cup campaign this summer, but their inability to maintain a lead has to be a concern heading into the US game. Despite that, even managing a draw against Argentina, currently the No. 1 team in the FIFA rankings, is certainly nothing to sneeze at.

USMNT not up to speed in friendly loss against Brazil: "They gave us a lesson tonight"
MLSsoccer.com

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Prior to Tuesday night’s tilt versus Brazil, Jurgen Klinsmann talked about looking at the friendly as an opportunity for his players to learn a thing or two.

After walking off the pitch, defeated by a 4-1 margin, the United States were taken to school in a big way, being outworked in nearly every aspect of the game.

“They gave us a lesson tonight,” said Klinsmann. “All the aspects there’s definitely a lot to take with all of us. The players get a sense for the tempo, the speed of play, the speed of thought, the speed of execution. For us it’s a huge learning curve, a huge learning moment for all the players that were on the field to experience that. I’m not mad at anybody.”

The two areas in which Klinsmann feels his team were outclassed on Tuesday happened with regards to tempo, both in regards to how Brazil controlled the play and how they thought about the following sequence.

“They’re not used to that,” said Klinsmann of his club trying to keep pace with Brazil. “It’s a tempo that is played in Champions League. You watch Champions League and this is Champions League tempo. It’s not only their technical tempo where they played one-two touches and then dribble whenever they think it’s the right moment to dribble. It’s the speed of thought. They are two thoughts ahead. It’s like playing chess and they are two moves ahead.”

“They were just mentally quicker than us and technically they’re very gifted,” said midfielder Alejandro Bedoya. “They just thought a lot better than us and even when you try to get close to them they’re able to flick the ball and play a quick one-two right around us.”

Of course, if the US are to change the result in their major CONCACAF Cup clash with Mexico on October 10th, they must be able to keep pace with El Tri both physically and mentally, and unlike the Brazil match, they will also need to impose their will and gain control of the run of play in order to tilt the scales in the ultimate must-win match.

“If anything it’s a motivation thing that we need to step our game up,” said defender Geoff Cameron. “Everybody needs to work hard, leave it on the field… We have to have a short memory with this, but at the same time we’ve got to learn that we can’t come out flat footed and we got to want to get on the ball, want to move, want to tackle and be aggressive.”

USMNT midfielder Alejandro Bedoya endures rough outing against Brazil in brand-new No. 6 role
By Nicholas Rosano (MLSsoccer.com)

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – “Sometimes versatility is a good and a bad thing,” says US national team midfielder Alejandro Bedoya.

Having a player that can fill in effectively at multiple positions is a valuable asset for any team, but when that trait is pushed to the extreme, things can get a little dicey, as Bedoya and the USMNT learned the hard way on Tuesday night.

Thrust into a defensive midfield role in the USA’s 4-1 friendly loss to Brazil, Bedoya looked behind the game almost from the start. He made one crucial interception early on, but afterwards struggled to make an impact on the game on either side of the ball until he was replaced by Danny Williams – a more natural defensive midfielder – in the 36th minute.

“I hadn’t really played there before,” Bedoya told reporters after the game. “... Over the past two games I tried to do my best somewhere, but I hadn’t really played [there] as a professional. But this is one of those games where you learn a lot and you take it from here.”

Bedoya, who plays his club soccer with Nantes in France’s Ligue 1, is typically more accustomed to playing in an attacking midfield role, either centrally or on the the flanks. In his latest stint with the USMNT, however, he was asked to play as one of two central midfielders alongside Jermaine Jones in a 4-4-2 formation against Peru, then in an even more defensive role alongside Jones, with Michael Bradley playing ahead of the duo, in a 4-2-3-1 formation against Brazil.

He admitted that he was able to train “a bit” in the so-called No. 6 role in the current US camp, but that when push came to shove, the circumstances were slightly different.

“I try to work on things in training, but obviously in a game environment it’s a whole different thing,” Bedoya said. “Against good teams like Peru and Brazil, it’s fair to say that I got exposed a little bit and not really knowing how to play as a No. 6, which I haven’t really played it as a professional, but everything’s a learning curve. “

The decision to start and play Bedoya in any position ultimately rests with USMNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who said that he’d seen some good things from Bedoya in more central positions in the last year, but that the experiment just didn’t work out on the night.

“Obviously playing Ale in the center there with Jermaine and with Michael in front of him was a very good option,” Klinsmann explained in his postgame press conference. “He showed that in a couple of other games after the World Cup that he can play inside.

“He just never caught up with the game. He was literally running after the ball and trying to get involved somehow, but he never connected, and that’s what you see then and you wait a little bit and then you say, ‘You know what, maybe it’s better if you make a switch there.’ And you explain it to him and you just cross it off.”

The 106th meeting between Norway and Sweden is in progress. Currently goalless at about 15' into the proceedings.

UPDATE: Turned out to be a very, very entertaining friendly. Zlatan wasn't at his best, but he had a look or two. Subs on both sides were influential.

The highlight: Norway's 16 year old left-footed prodigy, Martin Odegaard. Unconfirmed reports indicate he might be loaned out by Madrid, possibly destined for the Premier League. His pass selection will catch your attention.

On the whole, either team could have walked off with the win, but, for me, Norway might have been the more deserving. Hope they progress out of European qualifying.

Big football day in Sweden: just as Sweden's men sign off, the Swedish women kick off versus Nigeria.

US national team to host Costa Rica in international friendly on October 13 at Red Bull Arena
MLSsoccer.com

The United States national team will be keeping busy after its decisive CONCACAF Cup match against Mexico on October 10, announcing on Saturday that it will face Costa Rica in a friendly at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey on Tuesday, October 13.

The match will kick off at 6:30 pm ET, and can be seen on ESPN and Watch ESPN, as well as UniMás and Univision Deportes Network (UDN).

The friendly against Costa Rica will be the first time the teams face off since meeting for a trio of games in 2013. The US won two of those three matchups, outlasting Costa Rica in the home-leg of the final round of 2014 World Cup qualifying with a 1-0 win in the snow at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, and following up with another 1-0 victory in East Hartford, Connecticut, on its way to the 2013 Gold Cup title. The US holds a 13-4-4 against Costa Rica on home soil. In the most recent matchup, a World Cup Qualifying matchup held in Central America, Costa Rica won 3-1 in San Jose.

Costa Rica feature a number of MLS-based players on their roster, including D.C. United forward Alvaro Saborio, Montreal Impact midfielder Johan Venegas and Columbus Crew SC outside back Waylon Francis on their most recent squad. New York Red Bulls defender Roy Miller, Vancouver Whitecaps duo Kendall Waston and Jordan Smith, and Portland Timbers winger Rodney Wallace have also all featured for the Ticos recently.

This will be the 33rd meeting between the United States and Costa Rica, with the lifetime series evenly split at 13-13-6. The MNT has played 16 matches in the state of New Jersey, and this will be its third at Red Bull Arena. The last time the team played at the venue was in 2014 before of a sold-out crowd of 26,762, when Tim Howard became the MNT's all-time winningest goalkeeper with his 54th victory, leading the U.S. to a 2-1 win against Turkey.

The match against Costa Rica will take place just three days after USMNT's CONCACAF Cup clash against Mexico on Oct. 10, a game that will determine which CONCACAF team will play in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. The game against Costa Rica will also serve as a part of the USA's continued preparations for 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying, which begins on Nov. 13 when the team plays the winner of St. Vincent & The Grenadines and Aruba at Busch Stadium in St. Louis in its opening qualifying game.

Also ... a lot of visceral comments online point to Americans not understanding his mind. At least for the moment, Sunil Gulati seems to get it.

Having gotten over the hump of his decision regarding Landon Donovan, I don't know how much room he has to wander. We'll find out as qualification progresses. No overt signs of a player revolt afaik.

True on all accounts. I have a feeling it wouldn't be long now before they seek to replace him.

As somebody posted in another thread, it would have been interesting to see T&T take them on before our WCQ.

Puerto Rico to host U.S. in friendly
CONCACAF

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Puerto Rico will host the United States in an international friendly on May 22 at the Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel in Bayamon, it was announced Thursday.

It will mark the first-ever meeting between the sides as both prepare for competitions in June. The match will be one of three for the U.S. ahead of the Copa America Centenario, while Puerto Rico will participate in 2016/17 Scotiabank CFU Men’s Caribbean Cup second-round play.

"This match fits perfectly for us in the calendar and the preparation of our boys ahead of the second group stage phase of the Caribbean Cup,” said Eric Labrador, president of the Federación Puertorriqueña de Fútbol. “Our national team has the opportunity to be able to take on a World Cup team at home. We urge all lovers of football to go and enjoy a great game and that they support our national team.

After the game, the Americans will face Ecuador (May 25; Frisco, Texas) and Bolivia (May 28; Kansas City, Kansas), before kicking off their Copa America Centenario campaign against Colombia (June 3; Santa Clara, California).

"We are thrilled to be playing Puerto Rico in our first preparation game for the Copa America Centenario," said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. "This will be an important opportunity for our players to stay sharp and keep progressing towards our opener against Colombia, and we appreciate all the efforts by the Puerto Rican Football Federation to help organize the match."

It looks like the MLS clubs released the US players that were called up eg Dempsey, Bradley, Beckerman, Zuzi etc. since they're in preparations for Copa America.
