de latest Stern interview

Stern John is in a rich vein of form at present after scoring his sixth goal in ten games against Sheffield Wednesday in midweek. It helped the Sky Blues to a 2-1 victory and lifted them to 11th place in the Championship and still harbouring outside hopes of a play-off push. And John has a dual target this season as he intends to help Trinidad and Tobago cause an upset in the 2006 World Cup group alongside England. It has been a tremendous turn-around for John who was loaned out to Derby County earlier in the campaign and is now forming a fearsome partnership with Dele Adebola. However, as he told givemefootball's Ian Clarkson, there were mitigating circumstances behind his start to the season.

Q YOU MUST BE HAPPY WITH YOUR GOAL RETURN?
A So far It has been going well and since I came back from Derby I have been looking fitter and I feel better. Hopefully I can continue to do better and carry on scoring goals for the remainder of the season.

Q YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH DELE ADEBOLA LOOKS GOOD AS WELL DOESN'T IT?
A It feels really good. We have picked up where we left off at the end of last season. We weren't doing that well at the start of this season because I was back and forward with internationals and I wasn't really settled. I am settled now and I don't have to worry about flying back for internationals. I feel well and the partnership with myself, Dele and Gary McSheffrey is just getting better and better.

Q WHY DO YOU FEEL FRESHER?
A When you have to fly out to Trinidad or South America to play games, you go over there for two weeks and when you come back and it takes you two weeks to get over the jet lag. It is very difficult. There are no more games so I can just concentrate on playing for Coventry. I am enjoying it and feeling fitter.

Q WHAT ARE THE AMBITIONS FOR THE REST OF THE CAMPAIGN?
A I think if we have to maintain our momentum and keep our run of form going then we have a good chance of climbing the table. We aren't going to kid ourselves but we have a good chance of making the play-offs. If the results continue to go our way then who knows?

Q HOW MUCH OF AN INFLUENCE HAS DENNIS WISE HAD SINCE HIS ARRIVAL?
A Dennis is a massive player for us. He has bought experience and composure to our midfield. He has done it before so the lads look up to him. He is a great player. I know he is coming to the end of his career but his awareness on the pitch is really good for us.

Q WERE THERE ANY TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO SCOUTS WATCHING YOU IN MIDWEEK?
A I have no idea if there were scouts here watching me, but I am just going to do my thing. I am not worried whether people are watching or not as I just want to keep putting the ball into the back of the net. Hopefully I can get my goals tally into double figures before the end of the season - that is one of my targets.
