Two-goal Yorke gives Trinidad win over Iceland

(Updates with detail)

By Mike Collett

LONDON, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Dwight Yorke scored twice as Trinidad & Tobago began their countdown to the World Cup finals with a 2-0 win over Iceland in a friendly international at a freezing Loftus Road on Tuesday.

On a night when thousands of their countrymen began a traditional two-day carnival in the Caribbean heat, Trinidad's players tried to raise the temperature for their frozen fans in London and succeeded with a controlled all-round display.

In their first match since qualifying for their first World Cup in November, the Soca Warriors were quicker to the ball, faster on the break and more cohesive than Iceland whose first match under Eyjolfur Sverrisson saw a fifth straight defeat.

Yorke blasted his side ahead from eight metres after 10 minutes and the Trinidad skipper doubled the lead with an audacious chip from a 54th minute penalty after Stern John was pushed over in the box by Ivar Ingimarsson.

Iceland almost scored after 38 minutes when skipper Eidur Gudjohnsen was inches wide with a 20-metre free kick but Trinidad were always in control and gave scouts from World Cup opponents England, Sweden and Paraguay plenty to ponder.

BRITISH-BASED

Trinidad's Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker selected seven British-based players in his starting lineup, plus Yorke who was familiar with the Loftus Road ground from his days in the Premier League with Manchester United and Aston Villa.

It was Yorke who opened the scoring with a well-taken goal after only 10 minutes when Iceland's defence failed to clear a high, ranging cross from Colin Samuel who outpaced Heldi Danielsson down the left wing.

Indridi Sigurdsson played the inswinging ball straight to Yorke who controlled it with one touch before blasting it high and wide of goalkeeper Arni Arason with his next.

Iceland did create some chances of their own in an entertaining opening 45 minutes with left-winger Ivar Ingimarsson twice cutting in to fire two powerful efforts towards Shaka Hislop's goal.

Gudjohnsen went closest to a goal with his free kick and as ever was at the heart of almost every move Iceland put together.

But Trinidad were far too strong for Gudjohnsen to play on his own and some fine performances from Carlos Edwards, Samuel and Cyd Grey hinted that Trinidad may not be anyone's pushovers in the finals in Germany starting in June.

YORKE FIRES TRINIDAD TO VICTORY
By Ben Collins, PA Sport, London

Dwight Yorke sent a warning to the England camp with a two-goal performance for Trinidad & Tobago in Tuesday's World Cup warm-up with Iceland at Loftus Road.

The former Manchester United striker, who is set to lead the Soca Warriors against England in Nuremberg on June 15, netted the game's opening goal in the 10th minute and scored a second with a cheeky penalty shortly before being withdrawn in the 59th minute.

The 34-year-old, who could train with United once Sydney FC's season finishes on Sunday, has a licence to roam with the Soca Warriors and dropped back to produce a number of incisive balls for frontman Stern John and the wide midfielders.

One of which was Dundee United's Collin Samuel, who made the opening goal and impressed on the left, while Sven-Goran Eriksson's advisors should also be wary of Port Vale's Chris Birchall.

The Stafford-born midfielder showed again why he was accepted so quickly by the Warrior Nation - the team's passionate supporters - by providing the driving force in the centre of the park.

Kick-off was delayed by almost half an hour due to the late arrival of the Trinidad & Tobago squad.

When play did eventually start, both sides struggled to get going on a bitterly cold evening, but the Caribbean outfit are unlikely to encounter such harsh conditions in Germany this summer.

Stefan Gislason had the game's first shot, saved comfortably by West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop, before Yorke's underhit pass to Wrexham defender Dennis Lawrence almost allowed Eidur Gudjohnsen a run at goal.

Lawrence then played the ball wide left for Samuel, though, who beat his marker to cross from the byline. Iceland failed to deal with it and the ball fell kindly for Yorke, who was arriving on the edge of the box to chest the ball before lashing it right-footed past former Manchester City keeper Arni Arason.

That roused the Warrior Nation, who were already boisterous despite the freezing conditions, but not the game itself.

The next chance did not come until just after the half-hour mark following an error by Charlton defender Herman Hreidarsson.

Left-back Avery John launched a free-kick into the box and Hreidarsson misjudged his header, leaving Stern John free to bring the ball down just 10 yards out but the Coventry striker lacked composure and fired over the crossbar.

In the 37th minute, Hreidarsson had an opening at the other end, blazing over as he stretched to meet Gudjohnsen's knock-back, and shortly after the Chelsea striker went close himself, curling a 25-yard free-kick narrowly wide.

Fulham keeper Tony Warner came on at half-time to make his international debut, as did Swindon's 21-year-old midfielder Ricky Shakes.

Nine minutes after the restart, Stern John was bundled over in the box and Yorke scored with a cheeky chip before being replaced by Russell Latapy.

There were no other moments of note as both coaches used their substitutes, with Leo Beenhakker also bringing on Southampton's Kenwyne Jones for Stern John.

Dwight Yorke rolled back the years with a vintage display that saw Trinidad & Tobago see off Iceland 2-0 at Loftus Road.

The former Manchester United front man was at his mercurial best as England's World Cup opponents were full of wit and verve in putting a mediocre Iceland side to the sword.

Yorke continually dropped deep to link-up play for Trinidad and on a cold night in the capital was always the man most likely for the Caribbean outfit, with it being no surprise that he grabbed both goals either side of half-time.

Trinidad needed just ten minutes to break the deadlock when after the impressive Collin Samuel made inroads down the left, his cross was only partially cleared to Yorke - who took the ball down on his chest before lashing past Arni Arason from the penalty spot.

Coventry striker Stern John was left left with his head in his hands on the half-hour mark when he blazed over unattended, after a mistake from Herman Hreidarsson gave him possesion and it was the same pair involved in Trinidad's second.

Iceland responded prior to the half-time whistle but Hreidarsson could only divert the ball wide and then captain Eidur Gudjohnsen sent a free-kick narrowly over.

Fulham's Tony Warner made his bow for the Soca Warriors, as did Swindon's Ricky Shakes as Trinidad extended their lead in the second period.

In the 54th minute John was bundled down in Iceland's box by an out-of-sorts Hreidarsson and from the resultant spot-kick,k Yorke dinked the slowest and most precocious of penalties down the centre of the goal and beyond Arason.

You obviously don't like spann, yuh said the same thing on another post, but for what it's worth everybody is entitled to there own opinion,so here's mine spann played well enough to show what he's capable of and I will maintain what I've been saying about him since seeing him play,he tackles well, good winner of the ball, not afraid to take chances, good control of the ball, work ethic needs a little fine tuning but overall will be a valuable asset during the world cup.
