UEFA man accuses Jose of lying
UEFA have accused Chelsea lied over claims that Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard had spoken with referee Anders Frisk in the official's dressing room.
European football's governing body today charged Chelsea, Blues manager Jose Mourinho, his assistant Steve Clarke and the club's security official Les Miles with bringing the game into disrepute.
Mourinho, Clarke and Miles are accused of making 'wrong and unfounded' statements over what they claimed they had seen occur at half-time of the Champions League match at the Nou Camp on February 23.
The trio could now face fines or touchline bans if found guilty at a hearing on March 31, and UEFA director of communications William Gaillard believes the organisation has damning evidence against the London club.
'I can categorically state that this (the alleged meeting between Rijkaard and Frisk) did not happen,' Gaillard told Sky Sports News.
'In one statement by Chelsea we have two officials - not including Mourinho - saying they have seen it which we know is not possible from where they were, they could not have seen it.
'At the same time, in an article he wrote, we have Mourinho saying he was the one who saw it. There is a contradiction between the two statements.'
Gaillard added on Sky Sports News: 'This is bringing the game into disrepute.
'It is using `the end justifies the means' (approach). To get where you are going - in this case in the Champions League - you are ready to use disloyal methods and, frankly, this is totally and completely unacceptable.'
Frisk has since retired from refereeing after receiving death threats from Chelsea fans following the match.
The Swede's decision 'dismayed' UEFA but, even in light of their assertion that the claims made by Mourinho were false, they will respect Frisk's decision to quit for the safety of his family. 'The UEFA referees' committee and everyone involved was extremely dismayed by Anders Frisk's resignation, but we are not charging Chelsea with his resignation.
'He has asked us not to ask him to reconsider. It was a difficult decision for him to make. More than half of his life has been spent refereeing.
'But he wants to spend more time with his children. The kind of threat he received made him think twice about whether he should keep going.'
On the night of the match, which Chelsea lost 2-1, spokesman Simon Greenberg said: 'We will be submitting an official complaint to UEFA about an incident that occurred at half-time. That's all I can say.'
On February 27, Mourinho was quoted in Dez Record as saying: 'When I saw Rijkaard entering the referee's dressing room I couldn't believe it. When (Didier) Drogba was sent off I didn't get surprised.
'There is something that tells me that in London the referee will be (Pierluigi) Collina, the best in the world. A perfect referee with personality and quality.'
A UEFA statement said: 'UEFA today announced the opening of disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea FC, head coach Josi Mourinho, assistant manager Steve Clarke and security responsible Les Miles, for making false declarations, notably in the complaint sent by Chelsea FC following the UEFA Champions League match played against FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou on 23 February 2005.
'By further disseminating these wrong and unfounded statements, Chelsea FC allowed its technical staff to deliberately create a poisoned and negative ambience amongst the teams and to put pressure on the refereeing officials,' the statement continued.
