Latics fail in Yorke bid

Oldham have failed in an ambitious bid to sign former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke

Yorke was contracted to Sydney FC when the January transfer window closed thus rendering any move impossible until the summer, at least.

Latics manager Ronnie Moore was rumoured to be keen on a loan deal but his bid has been thwarted by red tape.

A move to Boundary Park could have suited Yorke with the 34-year-old - who knows the North West well from his time at United and also Blackburn - desperate to retain his match fitness before Trinidad & Tobago's World Cup bid this summer.

A number of clubs - most notably Derby - had also expressed an interest in bringing Yorke back to English shores.

The Caribbean side's captain is training with United following the end of the Australian season in February.

Moore, meanwhile, is still believed to be closing on a new signing before next week's football league transfer deadline on March 23.
