Impact makes Joe Public look like regular Joes

CBC Sports

Maybe Joe Public FC head coach Keith Griffith should stick to just coaching soccer and not concern himself with making prognostications.

The Montreal Impact all but assured itself a quarter-final berth in the CONCACAF Champions League Wednesday night with an easy 4-1 win over Joe Public FC in Trinidad and Tobago.

With the win, Montreal solidified its hold on first place in its round-robin group of the 16-team competition. The Impact has 10 points, ahead of Mexican side Atlante FC (four points) and Olimpia of Honduras and Joe Public (three points apiece).

Atlante visits Olimpia later on Wednesday. A victory by the Mexican club would ensure Montreal advances to the next round as the top two clubs in each of the four first-round groups move on to the quarter-finals.

Griffith raised eyebrows after Joe Public's 2-0 loss to the Impact in Montreal last month when he boastfully predicted the Trinidadian club would handily win the return match on their home turf.

"The next time we meet the Impact [in Trinidad and Tobago], we'll beat them by four goals clear, for sure," Griffith said at the time.

But Griffith's team was overpowered, outclassed and outplayed by the Impact Wednesday in Port of Spain, and they sorely lacked offensive inspiration without influential forward Gregory Richardson, who was serving a one-game suspension.

Montreal's win was all the more impressive when you consider its hectic and taxing schedule as of late — Wednesday's game was the Canadian club's fourth in eight days.

It took the Impact all of five minutes to open the scoring, Rocco Placentino finding of the back of the net with a low shot after collecting a perfect pass from the wing from Tony Donatelli.

Donatelli curls perfect shot into net

Montreal's lead lasted only four minutes, as Kerry Noray took advantage of some slack defending by Montreal before beating Impact goalkeeper Matt Jordan with a shot from close range.

Donatelli restored Montreal's advantage in the 12th minute when he collected a high cross from Leonardo Di Lorenzo, slipped by a Joe Public defender inside the box and curled a perfect shot into the back of the net.

After that flurry of goals, the game settled down into a pedestrian rhythm before the Impact scored with two minutes remaining in the first half.

Sandro Grande made a perfect defence-splitting pass that sent Joey Gjertsen on a breakaway, and after he rounded Joe Public's goalkeeper, the Montreal midfielder played the ball into the middle of the box for Peter Byers, who scored on an easy tap-in from two yards out.

The Trinidadian side never really threatened in the second half, and Donatelli sealed the result with his second goal of the game at the 78-minute mark when he chipped his shot over the head of the onrushing Joe Public goalkeeper.

The Impact will play its last two games of the first round on Oct. 21 against Honduran club Olimpia in Montreal (CBC Bold, CBCSports.ca, 8 p.m. ET), and Oct. 28 against Atlante FC in Cancun, Mexico (CBC Bold, CBCSports.ca, 10 p.m. ET).

Joe Public disgrace T&T colors with 4-0 exit in Champions League.
« Reply #653 on: October 29, 2008, 04:18:48 AM »
Olimpia concludes Champions League play with 4:0 victory over Joe Public.

Honduras – Allan Kardeck Dos Santos scored two first-half goals and CD Olimpia concluded its CONCACAF Champions League run with a 3:0 victory over Joe Public FC on Tuesday.

Both teams already had been eliminated from contention for a quarterfinal berth, and the result finished Olimpia third in Group C with eight points. It was the fifth loss in six games for Joe Public, leaving the Trinidadian side in last place with three points.

The goals were the first of the season by Dos Santos for Olimpia, which used only a few of its regulars. Olimpia is in third place in the Honduran league, one point above the last place guaranteed a berth in the playoff semifinals with four matches to play.

Olimpia had the better of play early, and twice forced Joe Public defender Terrence McAllister into fouls in dangerous areas just outside the area. His second gave Jaime Rosales a free kick just outside the left side of penalty area in the 26th minute, and his right-footed strike inadvertently struck Dos Santos – standing in the Joe Public wall – in the side of the face and deflected just inside the near post.

The goal appeared to inspire Joe Public, which forced Olimpia goalkeeper Donis Escober twice into diving saves, first off the foot of Gregory Richardson in the 33rd and again two minutes later when Seon Power hit a drive from just outside the 18. Kerry Baptiste, who has 15 goals for Joe Public this season, missed another chance when he sent the rebound from Power’s shot way over the bar from the six.

Joe Public, which finished with 10 men after Power was sent off with his second yellow in the 84th, mustered little much the rest of the way and was shut out for the third time in the Champions League.

Dos Santos added his second in the 38th, beating defender Silas Spann to a backpass and muscling him off the ball. With Spann falling, Dos Santos rounded goalkeeper Alejandro Figueroa, had to regain control of the ball and easily scored from about 14 yards.

Oscar Boniek Garcia and Nestor Fabian Silva added goals in the 72nd and 85th, the last when Joe Public’s defense failed to react to a free kick by Rodolfo Lopez that deflected off the wall. The ball trickled toward goal where Silva tapped it into the net.

Joe Public, which was outscored 15:3 in the Champions League Group Stage, will return to TT Pro League play with the club in seventh place, one point short of the Big Six playoffs with three games in hand and seven matches to play.

Joe Public: Alejandro Figueroa, Sean Power, Silas Spann (Gary Glasgow 78th), Terrance McAllister (Reon Nelson 46th), Dale Saunders, Dexter Thornhill, Wolry Wolfe, Kerry Noray (Shane Calderón 67th), Lyndon Andrews, Kerry Baptiste, Gregory Richardson.

Coach: - Keith Griffith.

CD Olimpia: - D.Escober, J.Palacios, J.Rosales, R.Morales, W.Barahona (N. Silva 74th), B.García, R.López, J.Calderón, A.Navas (S. Arzú 69th), E.Andino, A.Kardec (R.Rojas 61st).

Goles: (A. Kardec 1-0 min 26, 2-0 min 37, B. García 3-0 min 73, N. Silva 4-0 min 86)

I eh know which display was worse, T&T's 3-0 loss to USA or JP's 4-0 loss to Olimpia. JP could be accused of willful negligence of their duties last night, it was that bad. Losing is one ting, but when no meaningful effort is made, the loss is hard to take. Men standing up, looking lethargic and disinterested, ball watching, not marking players, fouling indiscriminately, no leadership on de field,  making bad pass after bad pass with no pressure etc. The team was unrecognizable from the one that played against NE Revolution, earlier in de campaign. Ah waiting tuh see what kinda explanation, if any, dey go give fuh dat performance.

I cant understand how Sean Power could be called up for T&T side. This man is awful. Not even Cyd Gray was this bad when he first came on the scene.

Silas Spann is terrible, his passing is zero, good ideas but definitely his passing is sub par. Same with his elder brother Silvio. Both cant be defensive wing back players.

Kerry Noray is a pure fighter and was one of the only player who really played ball.

Joe Public entire team was shamless to watch, this was the first time I turned off my TV while watching something related to T&T.

New England Revolution probably feeling the worst of all teams knowing that a poor side like Joe Public beat them twice. And Alante FC too.

Imagine professional players still making foul throws (Spann & Power).... steups....

Many holes in JP defence since the tournament started and nothing has/was done about it, no new players, no adjustment by the coach and if he did make changes, it was moreorless a worst player, seems they were not expecting to make it this far.

They also played with 90% of the same team, they have no depth what so ever. I really hope to see San Juan Jabloteh and W Connection put on a better show next time.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

If we know T&T players we might understand JP's delima, look at how they play when something is at stake, when there is nothing at stake what we expect, what was JP playing for?it was just another game,i'm sure they were just going through the motion, how does a coach motivate players for a game like this, peeps say they waiting for when Jabloteh and WConection play in that league remember they were there in the past,i don't see what's disgraceful about their performance in the league,at least it has enhanced the Pro league and given it some sort of respect.
