25 Questions, 25 Answers - a different kind of interview

FIFA Magazine

Dennis Lawrence
Born: 18 January 1974 in Trinidad
Height: 2.01 m
Weight: 80kg
Position: Central defender
Clubs: 1996: Defence Force (T&T army side). Since 2001: Wrexham (English League Two)

1. What does football mean to you?

Football is my life - it is my job and my hobby. I was a soldier until I got my first professional contract at the age of 26 so it means everything to me.

2. Which football club did you support as a child?

Juventus, and I support them still. I like the way they play and they have a great team at the moment.

3. Did you ever have an idol?

I have never idolised one player in particular but I was a big fan of the Brazil team of the early 1990s, and their defenders such as Branco and Jorginho.

4. Who is the best player in the world right now?

Ronaldinho, of course. Is there anyone else? He is amazing to watch.

5. Which team is currently playing the most attractive football?

Barcelona.

6. What is your fondest footballing memory?

Scoring the goal against Bahrain that put Trinidad and Tobago into the World Cup for the first time ever. At the final whistle I looked up at the scoreboard and saw 1-0 to T&T and knew we were in the World Cup draw. It was special. It was the best thing that could have happened to our country at the moment.

7. What has been your biggest disappointment in football?

It must be getting relegated with my club Wrexham.

8. What is your favourite type of music?

Rap and R&B

9. And your favourite book?

The Bible.

10. Your favourite film?

Face/Off - it's a great action movie.

11. Your favourite city?

Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad. I'm proud of my my culture and my heritage.

12. What is your favourite type of food?

Pelau - a Trinidadian dish of chicken cooked with brown sugar, with rice and peas in cocount milk.

13. And your favourite hobby?

Apart from football, it is basketball.

14. Who has been the most influential figure in world history?

I think it has got to be Albert Einstein. His ideas have had an enormous impact in the modern world.

15. What is your main strength?

I am 2.01 m tall so my height. The other thing is that I am usually able to remain calm in the heat of the moment.

16. And your biggest weakness?

I am not the quickest player, so maybe my pace.

17. What qualities do you look for in a woman?

She has got to be good-looking but, just as important, she has to be genuine.

18. And in a man?

A good friend has got to be supportive.

19. What do you spend most of your money on?

Probably on food!

20. What are you scared of?

Boats. I don't like going out on them at all, that's my one big fear.

21. How do you see the future of the world?

It's looking very dim for the world at the moment. The way mankind is treating the earth makes you fear for the future. We need to learn to live in our environment without destroying it.

22. What does the word "beauty" mean to you?

Beatuy is nothing on the outside, it exists inside a person.

23. Where would you like to go on holiday?

I may come from the Caribbean but it remains my top holiday destination - perhaps the island of St. Martin.

24. Who would you most like to meet?

I would have liked to meet Tupac Shakur but I cannot do so now. But, I have always wanted to meet Ronaldo as well. Maybe at this year's World Cup I will achieve my ambition.

25. Who will win the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany?

Trinidad and Tobago - you have to have confidence!

Impressive respones, though I think #17 and #22 are slightly contradictory.

Perhaps he's just being honest, most people grow up listening to Soca from December to February. For the other 9 months of the year, it's Rap, R&B or Reggae.

Musical preference don't mean anything. That is what he like the most and nothing wrong with that.

This is a case of being politically correct.. ah bet allyuh remember the case with Jones talking about listening some reggea music , that Fuller had given him when he was injured. He was taken to task for it by the media.. why Reggea and not Soca, It is the same with DL here
Phenomenal, lovely atmosphere.

I get that feeling too, but in the FIFA mag when they interviewing players their style of interviews is usually brief and to the point
