Interesting quote from the Big Soccer blog

Still trying to determine if this makes any kinda sense.

No sense at all.......he say they didn't underestimate them, then basically give the definition of 'underestimate'  ::)

the pfl and super leagues by far have more talent than the mls.... the mls has the marketing and money, also the support bc of the marketing money..

If that is the case then why have we not won this tournament before. Why have PFL & Super league teams not been in the final 4 or 6 or 8

Going back to the commentators. All those american commentators are crap except for the couple that do champions league on espn and the few from FSC and Gol tv. Those former UMNT players turned analysts are really hurting the sport, with their lackluster broadcasting skills and clearly biased stance. Especially during the world cup. It is really hurting the image of football in America atleast for those who are already fans.

quite right Smurfie, i was working out in a hotel fitness room de morning Argentina play Nigeria in de final and went up 2-0 and cacahole Balboa keep saying that he WOULDN'T want to have a 2-0 lead going into halftime, he keep saying dat over and over again, til some stranger (non-footballer) in the workout room with me start laughing. dat is just ah small example as u well know! Jeez!!!

Sounders FC Opener Set for March 19 on ESPN2

http://www.soundersfc.com/article.aspx?id=2628

RENTON, WASH. – The inaugural Seattle Sounders FC game will be featured as Major League Soccer’s opening date for the 2009 season, it was announced today. Sounders FC will host the New York Red Bulls on Thursday night, March 19, in a match nationally televised by ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Pacific Time at Qwest Field. Sounders FC will be making its debut as the 15th team in MLS. New York is the 2008 MLS Cup runner-up.

“By being selected for the first match of the 2009 MLS season, this presents an opportunity to show a national audience what all the excitement is about in Seattle,” said Sounders FC majority owner Joe Roth. “Our supporters will be in full voice and, along with our players, wearing green. It promises to be quite a spectacle.”

The balance of the First Kick (MLS Opening Weekend) schedule features five matches on March 21 and another on March 22.

It was also announced that Seattle will be the guest for the Toronto FC home opener April 4. That match is scheduled for a 12 noon Pacific kickoff.

The complete MLS schedule will be released in early February. Each team will play a 30-game regular season. Each team will play every other MLS team home and away, for a base of 28 games. Two additional games against intra-conference rivals will complete each team’s league schedule. The regular season ends on Oct. 25.

Since the franchise was awarded in November of 2007, over 18,000 season tickets have been purchased. Over 14,500 votes were cast in naming the team and results will be announced later this week regarding the recently concluded votes for naming both the marching band and members association.

Season tickets are available by calling 1-877-MLS-GOAL or by visiting www.SoundersFC.com.

The Sounders FC kit, including home and away uniforms, will be unveiled Thursday, Dec. 4, during a fashion show which will raise funds for the Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute and the Quest for the Cure. Guild

Sounders FC added 10 players to the roster following the Nov. 26 expansion draft. Altogether, there are now 14 Seattle players, including midfielder Freddie Ljungberg and goalkeeper Kasey Keller. Both played for English Premier League clubs during the 2007-08 season.

good to see... Keller is a close second to McBride as my favorite yank.  The man was just stellar between the post for so many years and a generation of American keepers have him to thank for their foreign careers.

Sando prince yuh eh lie... as enthusiastic about the league as I was back in '96 the quality on the field was abyssmal.  They ent exactly easy on the eyes yet... but talent-wise they've grown by leaps and bounds.

Sounders FC Make Zakuani Top Pick

RENTON, WASH. – The Seattle Sounders FC selected University of Akron forward and Generation adidas member Steve Zakuani with the first overall selection in Thursday’s Major League Soccer SuperDraft.

“Steve has all the tools, a great pedigree, and grew up in the Arsenal youth system,” said Sounders FC Owner and General Manager Adrian Hanauer. “He had a very good college career and we think has the potential to be very explosive and a very exciting player. He is also a very good young man.”

Zakuani, who was born in the Congo but raised in England, led the nation in scoring with 20 goals and seven assists in 23 games in 2008, while being named Soccer America’s Player of the Year. Zakuani was also a finalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy, awarded to the top collegiate soccer player. Before coming to the U.S., Zakuani, 20, played with the Arsenal’s youth teams of the English Premier League from 1997 to 2003.

“I heard a few things a couple of weeks ago, but up until the last second, I had no idea,” Zakuani said of being the No. 1 pick. “It's a great honor, and I'm so excited. I'm ready. I'm going to go in there, train hard, catch up to the level of play and hopefully contribute right away.”

With the first pick in the second round (16th overall), the Sounders FC selected Wake Forest University defender Evan Brown. A top defender in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Brown contributed to 14 shutouts in 2008 and 15 in 2007, a single-season shutout record en route to the NCAA College Cup title. His 89 games played ranks as the sixth-most all-time at Wake Forest.

Azusa Pacific University defender Jared Karkas was chosen with the first pick in the third round (31st overall). A 22 year-old native of Upland, Calif., Karkas was an NAIA first-team All-American. He started all 22 contests during Azusa Pacific’s 2007 NAIA title run, anchoring a defense that posted program single-season records of 14 shutouts and a 0.49 goals-against average.

Seattle’s final selection in the fourth round (46th overall) was Harvard midfielder/forward Michael Fucito. An All-Ivy League first-team and Academic All-Ivy League selection as a junior and senior, Fucito compiled 20 goals and 12 assists in his final two seasons for the Crimson.

All SuperDraft selections are expected to report to Seattle later this month for preseason training. The Sounders FC begin its inaugural MLS season by hosting the Red Bull New York Red Bull at Qwest Field on March 19. Season tickets are available by calling the Sounders FC at 877-MLS-GOAL or online at www.soundersfc.com.

Sounders FC to Host Chelsea on July 18

http://www.soundersfc.com/News/Articles/2009/02-February/Chelsea-Announcement.aspx

Blues make first visit to Seattle since winning Premier League titles.

RENTON , Wash. - Seattle Sounders FC will host Chelsea FC, winners of five major English titles in the past five seasons, Saturday, July 18, at Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field, it was announced today. Kickoff is set for 12 noon pacific time and the match will be televised live on ESPN2.

“This will be unlike any international game ever played in the Pacific Northwest,” said Sounders FC majority owner Joe Roth. “Chelsea is one of the top clubs in the world, and they are playing the home team, our Sounders FC, backed by our loyal supporters. The atmosphere that afternoon will be incredible.”

The match is part of the Sounders FC full 18-game season ticket package. To date, the club has sold 19,800 season tickets. Seattle opens its first Major League Soccer season at home on March 19 against the New York Red Bulls.

“We are delighted to be opening our preseason preparations in Seattle,” said Peter Kenyon, the Chief Executive of Chelsea FC. “It is a fantastic city and we have great memories of our time there in the summer of 2004 which went on to be a great season for us. The Sounders FC will provide us with a real test and we are happy that a sporting city like Seattle now has its own new soccer franchise as it is important for the development of the game in the United States. We will be bringing a full strength squad so it should be a great game."

Chelsea features a star-studded lineup led by captain and defender John Terry and midfielder Frank Lampard-both members of the English National Team-and other accomplished internationals such as Didier Drogba, Michael Ballack and Deco.

In anticipation of the demand for tickets, seating at Qwest Field will be expanded to include the upper bowl for the Chelsea game.

Chelsea will be making its first trip to Seattle since the London club certified its standing as one of the world’s powers by winning back-to-back Premier League championships in 2004-05 and 2005-06.

The Blues finished second in the EPL the past two seasons and in 2008 they were runners-up in Europe’s most prestigious competition, the UEFA Champions League. The recent run of success also includes an FA Cup (2007) and two Carling Cups (2005, 2007).

This marks Chelsea’s fourth visit to Seattle and second to Qwest Field. In 2004 the Blues defeated Scotland’s Celtic, 4-2. The original North American Soccer League Sounders won a friendly, 2-0, at the Kingdome in 1977. Chelsea first toured in 1967, defeating a local amateur side, 5-0, at Memorial Stadium.

An on-sale date to purchase tickets exclusively for the Chelsea match will be announced later this spring.  Season ticket memberships that include the Chelsea match are available by phone at 1-877-MLS-GOAL or online at www.SoundersFC.com.

Whitecaps joining MLS in 2011

It's official: Whitecaps joining MLS in 2011

By Ian Walker, Vancouver SunMarch 18, 2009

It's a good news Wednesday for Vancouver Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi, as he talks about the franchise joining Major League Soccer (MLS) for the 2011 season.
Photograph by: Jenelle Schneider, Vancouver Sun

The Vancouver Whitecaps will join Major League Soccer for the 2011 season, it was confirmed today, in what may be the worst-kept secret in Lower Mainland sports circles.

MLS commissioner Don Garber made the announcement at a posh and packed press conference at the Westin Bayshore. Garber praised the team's ownership group for convincing MLS that Vancouver was a viable market for its 17th franchise.

"It's a very passionate soccer market and an ownership group that gets the game," said Garber. "Our goal is to become one of the world's best soccer leagues. The addition of Vancouver will help us get to that point."

Current Whitecaps owner Greg Kerfoot is heading the Vancouver ownership group. Joining him are NBA star Steve Nash, San Francisco Giants co-owner Jeff Mallett and Boston Celtics co-owner Steve Luczo. The group paid US$35 million for the franchise, down from the $40 million price tag MLS was originally asking, but more than the $30 million the Seattle Sounders paid two years ago. Seattle makes its MLS debut on Thursday in the league's opener agianst the New York Red Bulls at Qwest Field.

Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi cautioned there is a chance the team name could change once it joins MLS, but not if he gets his way.

"The Whitecaps name has a lot of equity," said Lenarduzzi. "There is a lot of things we need to make decisions on. There may be people out there that think it may need to be something other than that."

Vancouver will have the second MLS team in Canada following the successful launch of Toronto FC in 2007. Toronto FC has sold out every home game, capped season tickets at 16,000, and has a season-ticket waiting list of over 14,000.

The Vancouver expansion team will play at a renovated BC Place Stadium., which is set to undergo $365 million worth of improvements, including a retractable roof.

Kerfoot is the owner of Vancouver Whitecaps FC and former CEO of Crystal Decisions Software. Luczo is president, CEO, and chairman of the board for Seagate Technology and part owner of the NBA's Boston Celtics. Mallett is part owner of Major League Baseball's San Francisco Giants and is the former president and COO of Yahoo! Nash — a guard for the NBAs Phoenix Suns — is a two-time NBA MVP, and along with Mallett, is an investor in women's professional soccer.

Thierry Henry coming to Seattle

FC Barcelona, one of the world’s most popular and successful clubs will return to the United States this summer to take on the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday, August 5 at Qwest Field in Seattle (7:30 p.m. PT).
Rumors started kicking around the internet last April that the Sounders FC was seeking to bring Thierry Henry to Seattle. It was announced Friday that it may become a reality, as Henry’s FC Barcelona club will come to Seattle August 5 to face the Sounders FC at Qwest Field.

“I know there were a lot of rumors out there, so I guess in some ways some of them are true,” owner/GM Adrian Hanauer said.

On the heels of their victory over Chelsea to advance to the Champions League final against Manchester United on May 27 in Rome, Barca joined with the Sounders to make the announcement this morning.

For soccer fans, the friendly will provide another opportunity to see some of the top players in the world. Along with Henry, Barca features such stars as two-time runner up for FIFA Player of the Year Lionel Messi, Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o and 2008 FIFA Player of the Year finalist Xavi, among others.

“As a fan, I’m beside myself to have a chance to see those teams and measure our team to see where we are on the world stage,” Hanauer said. “We also wanted to make sure we gave value to our season ticket holders and that we rewarded their belief in us. It’s a hard economic time and that makes it hard to commit to the team the way they have. This is our way to say thanks to those fans.”

With Chelsea already on the schedule July 17 at Qwest Field, Hanauer looked at Wednesday’s Champions League semifinal a bit differently.

“It was exciting. You watch it a little bit differently knowing that those players will be here,” Hanauer said. “Then you start thinking about the players we have to match up with – those are some of the best players in the world.”

The August 5 game is added to a growing list of marquee games at Qwest Field this year. In addition to the Sounders FC friendly against Chelsea in July, the US National Team will face Grenada in the CONCACAF Gold Cup July 4 and Seattle will host the 2009 MLS Cup in November.

FC Barcelona to Face Sounders FC

UEFA Champions League finalist FC Barcelona to face LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders FC this August as part of 2009 US Tour
NEW YORK (Friday, May 8, 2009) – FC Barcelona, one of the world’s most popular and successful clubs – and the current UEFA Champions League and Copa del Rey finalists – will return to the United States this summer for the second consecutive year. FC Barcelona will tour the west coast, taking on the LA Galaxy on Saturday, August 1 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. (11:00 p.m. ET), and the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday, August 5 at Qwest Field in Seattle (10:30 p.m. ET). There will be a third game to conclude the FCB Tour. Details are being finalized and will be announced shortly. The preseason tour was announced today by Major League Soccer (MLS) in conjunction with FC Barcelona and the MLS teams.

Tickets to see the Spanish giant, whose honors include 18 La Liga trophies, a record-setting 24 Copa del Rey championships and two UEFA Champions League titles, will go on sale to the general public in the coming weeks. Tickets will be available for purchase at www.Ticketmaster.com/mls, the MLS team websites and by calling 1-800-745-3000. The match will mark the third friendly match (in addition the MLS Cup and the Chelsea friendly) included in season ticket memberships for Seattle Sounders FC season ticket holders.

FC Barcelona, whose heralded roster of international superstars currently includes Lionel Messi, Rafa Marquez, Xavi, Carles Puyol, Thierry Henry and Andres Iniesta – who scored the goal that propelled Barça into the Champion’s League final – will look to secure its third UEFA Champions League crown on Wednesday, May 27 against Manchester United, at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.

Barça is in the midst of one of their best campaigns in recent history, and in position to win all three of their major tournaments: Spain’s La Liga, UEFA Champions League and Copa del Rey. After defeating Real Madrid 6-2 in La Liga’s Clasico this past weekend, FC Barcelona is at the top of its league’s standings with 85 points, within range of conquering their 19th domestic title.  The club also advanced to the prestigious Copa del Rey final and will face Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, May 13.

In the second year of a five-year partnership, FC Barcelona, MLS and its commercial arm Soccer United Marketing (SUM), proudly see this year’s tour as a continuation of the cooperation fostered in FCB’s visits in 2006 and 2008.

“After a season in which we’ve played great soccer and based on our unforgettable experiences in past tours, we at FC Barcelona are excited to take our great players and performances to our fans in the United States once again,” said FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta. “Together with MLS and SUM, we look forward to great competition from the Galaxy and Sounders, and leaving our mark on the West Coast of the U.S.”

“We’re pleased to have FC Barcelona return to the United States this summer,” said Soccer United Marketing President Doug Quinn. “Arguably, they are the most exciting team in international soccer today. Their partnership with MLS and their upcoming tour reflect their commitment to soccer and their fans in the region.  We look forward to memorable matches with great stadium atmosphere featuring MLS clubs against an opponent whose year could be remembered as one of the best of all time.”

This will mark Barça’s third tour on American soil in partnership with SUM. In 2006, the FC Barcelona USA Tour registered the highest average attendance for any club tour in U.S. history, averaging 80,734 in three matches. Barcelona played in front of three sold-out crowds: at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (vs. CD Guadalajara, 1-1 on Aug. 6 in front of 92,650), at Houston’s Reliant Stadium (vs. Club America, 3-3 on Aug. 9, with a crowd of 70,550), and at Giants Stadium in E. Rutherford, NJ (vs. NY Red Bulls, 4-1 on Aug. 12, in front of 79,002).

In 2008, FC Barcelona USA Tour visited two cities and averaged 40,000 fans.  On August 3, FC Barcelona defeated one of Mexico’s most historic clubs, CD Guadalajara, 5-2 at Chicago’s Soldier Field.  Three days later, on Aug. 6, Barça defeated MLS’ New York Red Bulls 6-2 at New Jersey’s Giants Stadium.

FCB 2009 US Tour Schedule

August 1, 2009 vs. LA Galaxy at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California
August 5, 2009 vs. Seattle Sounders FC at Qwest Field in Seattle, Washington

I bet you at the game.

Seattle looking niiiiiiiiiice!

Nice attackng football... very attractive in fact.  Great facility... not sure how the other games are, but this is a nice turnout to see LA.  Field not pristine, but decent by MLS standards.  Ah couda do without de confetti on de pitch doh.  Keller looking boss... Freddy playing nice ball... Jaqua is a real nice pick up... I think Riley will be quite a steal too, man playing real lively in defense and supporting de attack well.  More I see of this team the more I like.

And de uniform is boss... easily the nicest kit in MLS  :beermug:

Sounders FC wins U.S. Open Cup

Roger Levesque, Fredy Montero score goals in Seattle's 2-1 victory over D.C. United

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sounders/2009795563_sounders03.html

By José Miguel Romero

Seattle Times staff reporter

WASHINGTON — Robert F. Kennedy Stadium, as the sign hanging from a wall in the lower level read, is a place where eagles dare. Wednesday night, it was also the place where Sounders FC won its first trophy.

The first-year Major League Soccer club stunned the home side, D.C. United, 2-1, in the U.S. Open Cup final, giving Seattle a major soccer tournament championship in its first season in existence. Seldom-used forward Roger Levesque scored the goal that eventually made the difference in the 86th minute, putting in cross from teammate Sebastien Le Toux.

Fredy Montero, Sounders FC's leading scorer, though often panned by fans, achieved hero status when he knocked in a deflection for a goal in the 67th minute for a 1-0 Sounders FC lead. Levesque's goal made it 2-0, and goalkeeper Kasey Keller rescued his team with key saves in the closing minutes after a D.C. goal by Clyde Simms.

After the final whistle, Sounders FC players charged onto the field and embraced, then ran to a corner where fans were seated and acknowledged them.

Seattle became the first MLS expansion team to win the U.S. Open Cup, the annual club championship of America, since the Chicago Fire in 1998. But it took persistence, and a red card to D.C. goalkeeper Josh Wicks in the second half that had United playing with 10 men.

Missed quality chances, which have plagued Sounders FC, were a factor once again. But D.C. United also failed to capitalize on good shots, and Sounders FC did well to keep up an attack and not be on its collective heels much in the first half.

Montero was involved right away. His direct shot off a cross from Steve Zakuani in the 10th minute was batted away by Wicks, who thwarted the Rave Green numerous times.

In the 19th minute, Wicks deflected midfielder Freddie Ljungberg's shot, after Le Toux had fed Ljungberg with cross to the middle. The 35th minute saw Montero try a header on a pass from Leo Gonzalez, but it went over the goal.

The best chance for Seattle in the half, though, came about a minute before halftime. Le Toux, playing well in place of normal starter Nate Jaqua, fed Montero for a header that Wicks somehow deflected.

Wicks had four first-half saves. Keller wasn't called upon much for saves in the first half, but D.C.'s off-target shooting kept the game scoreless for the first 45 minutes.

One could only Imagine that Montero say something about Wicks sister.
Because, that is as much as I would concede as a reason fir that rediculous stamp and red card.

Not sure how they could say that Seattle "stun" DC... how can you stun a team playing with 10 men?

As for the card, Wicks is a cunny... that was the first thing grab my attention after the ball hit the back of the net.  I was like "wait, what he juss do there??".  I was surprised the ref didn't spot it or more Seattle players didn't rush him.  That was bush league.

I would not say "stun" but you must admit Seattle looked the better team all night, especially in the first half, just was not putting away chances. DC only went to ten men after conceding the 1st goal, which damper a pretty good night for Wicks....i guess he was Stunned by the goal and had a dotish moment. Apart from that he "saved" DC all night. Remember also, Seattle was on the road and a rookie team, DC I think were the defending US Open champs.

I definitely wouldn't say that Seattle were the better team all night... Keller had to dig deep into his past to pull off a couple saves himself.  Seattle started hot but DC eventually settled into the game, in fact I'd say it was 50-50, anyone's game until the goal was scored.  All that other stuff about Seattle being on the road and DC being defending champs eh really swaying me.  This is MLS, teams don't really enjoy much of a home field advantage in this league, certainly not playing before a half-full stadium as DC was at RFK tonight.  As for defending Cup champions... yeah, but they've been middling all year.

I'm not taking anything away from Seattle... nice team, great way to start your initial campaign with a trophy.  I'm just not buying this big upset that the headline writer is trying to sell.  Expansion team or not all you have to do is look at their records:

DC       7 wins, 5 losses, 11 ties

Seattle 8 wins, 8 losses, 10 ties

Pretty even record I'd say.

Quakes unveiled another stadium design this week.
features according to the hype 'shortest site lines in MLS', a scoreboard bar (underneath the double sided HD screen at the open end. see 0:33 in the video) Also a general admission berm at that end for 5,000 person standing room (or picnics when it's not filled to capacity, lol) 15,000 seats.

I don't care what people have to say about MLS... it is exciting as a football fan banished in America to see a game in a quality stadium... and hopefully see a quality game in the process  :D
