Union trade all their MLS draft picks to FC Cincinnati,

Union trade all their MLS draft picks to FC Cincinnati, deciding draft isn’t of much use
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/union-trade-all-their-mls-draft-picks-to-fc-cincinnati-deciding-draft-isn%E2%80%99t-of-much-use/ar-BBS2GhE

As Ernst Tanner prepared for his first MLS draft as Union sporting director, he did his due diligence watching college prospects on tape and at the recent scouting combine.

He came away unimpressed.

So unimpressed, in fact, that the Union traded all five of their draft picks this year to FC Cincinnati for a pile of cash in MLS' allocation money system.

The Union’s top pick was to be No. 13 in the first round, a slot that would have given them a fringe first-team player at best. They also had the Nos. 5 and 13 picks in the second round (29 and 37 overall), and the 13th pick in the third and fourth round (61 and 85 overall).

Cincinnati sent over $150,000 in general allocation money, and will send $50,000 more for the 2020 season based on performance metrics achieved by whichever players they pick.

Though it’s a headline-grabbing move for the Union to give up on the draft, from a soccer perspective it’s not a bad thing. The caliber of players in college soccer has been declining for years, as most top youth prospects rise through MLS club academies and turn pro as teenagers.

That’s been the case for the Union as much as any club, and the Union now have a well-established track record of bringing those prospects into the professional ranks. Brenden Aaronson turned down a scholarship offer from Indiana University this past summer to sign a MLS deal, and Mark McKenzie left Wake Forest after one college season last January.

Tanner will hold a conference call with reporters later Wednesday night. This story will be updated then.

2 summers ago a D1 college coach was telling me that Jamaica is currently the #1 Caribbean country where coaches recruit from. He said for many years T&T used to be where they recruited heavily from and now Jamaica has emerged, could be why they have more players being drafted in the MLS.

All the more reason why we need to develop players locally outside of the confinement of this current TTFA. I keep telling allyuh, TTFA, proleague are not the only game in town. The local grassroots organizations, which are now few, are the ones who have to do the job while we wait for this mad man term to end.

Happy for Henry, should be a good fit for him and he can build his resume as a manger. I wished Monaco would've given him more time build his team after he was thrown into a bad situation but I like this move for him, a page fro Patrick Vierra.

Last time from a TT pro club was Stefano Rijssel in 2014 (fell through though, he blames DJW and W Conn), if you were interested in comparisons. Jamaica has had more.

MLS owners predict league will surpass MLB, Premier League
RONALD BLUM (AP Sports Writer)
The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) -- Los Angeles FC lead owner Larry Berg predicts Major League Soccer will surpass Major League Baseball in popularity during the next 10 years and Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas maintains it will be of higher quality than the Premier League or La Liga by 2045.

The pair spoke at the league's kickoff event Wednesday, two days ahead of the start of its 25th season.

MLS anticipates the status of soccer in the U.S. will be boosted when the Americans co-host the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada.

''We definitely have the demographics in our favor, both in terms of youth and diversity. So I think we'll pass baseball and hockey and be the No. 3 sport in the U.S. behind football and basketball,'' Berg said. ''I think we will be the league of choice. I think we're already a league of choice to a certain extent, whether we can be a top-five league or a top-three league will really come down at the end of the day to money, our ability to compete for players.''

MLS has increasingly attracted better players from South America.

''I think the good news is players want to play here,'' he said. ''We're the United States of America. People want to live here. It's an incredible lifestyle. The infrastructure is fantastic.''

Mas co-owns the Miami team that launches this weekend, partnering with former England captain David Beckham. He talked about what MLS will look like for its 40th year in 2045.

''I think the MLS will be one of the top sports leagues in the United States. I think it will be on par or exceed the best leagues in the world, the Premier League or Serie A or La Liga worldwide,'' Mas said. ''I think that the MLS 25 years from now will be Premier League-ish if we want to so-call it that on the metrics that leagues are measured by.''

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

MLS team under fire for telling out-of-work employees that Pepsi is hiring rather than support them
Jack Baer
Yahoo Sports

The “United” in the name Minnesota United apparently does not extend to some of the club’s gameday employees.

[ Coronavirus: How the sports world is responding to the pandemic ]

Minnesota United, one of Major League Soccer’s newer clubs, sent an email to employees on Tuesday that did not pledge to support them like so many other teams and leagues have done while the coronavirus crisis shuts down the industry.

Rather, the reported email told employees they were encouraged to file for unemployment benefits, and that the club’s partners at Cub Foods, PepsiCo and Target are hiring. The email was later leaked to a fan group of the club.

The email was confirmed by the Pioneer Press to have been sent by the team, which defended itself by saying that the email was part of a series of emails to roughly 100 workers:

Minnesota United told the Pioneer Press on Wednesday this email was plucked out of a series of four or five that intended to inform and communicate with a subset of about 100 workers — mostly ticket-takers and ushers who work only a few hours at each Loons home game at the St. Paul stadium. These emails did not go to contracted stadium workers in food, janitorial and security services nor full-time employees, who are working from home during the health crisis.

The defense did little to stop online blowback for the message. Other MLS teams such as Atlanta United and Orlando City have pledged to pay hourly workers for postponed games, per the Press.

Minnesota United is principally owned owned by William McGuire, a former chairman and CEO of UnitedHealth Group. McGuire resigned in disgrace from UnitedHealth in 2006 amid allegations of backdating stock options, purported to be worth $1.6 billion. He eventually paid back over $400 million to the SEC and shareholders.

McGuire is joined in the United’s ownership group by the Minnesota Twins-owning Pohlad family (net worth $3.5 billion as of 2015), Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor ($2.8 billion) and members of the Carlons family ($2.2 billion).

Minnesota United isn’t alone in cutting out gameday employees during the coronavirus shutdown, as the TD Garden — owned by the Boston Bruins and leased by the Boston Celtics — also reportedly informed its workers they were being laid off on Tuesday.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

MLS mulling tournament format, neutral-site games if season returns
ESPN.

MLS commissioner Don Garber said that the league is "focused at getting in as many games as possible" but that the season's suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic will alter how they will be played.

Speaking to ESPN's Taylor Twellman, Garber said MLS is exploring alternative formats to completing the season, which has been suspended until at least May 10.

"From tournament formats and neutral locations, ultimately playing an abridged regular season, but doing everything to get as many games," Garber said.

Garber added that if and when play does resume, games would mostly be played behind closed doors in what he dubbed "MLS Studio" games.

"We might be playing further into the winter," Garber said. "That's even hard to imagine because we had a zero Celsius MLS Cup in Toronto in mid-December in 2017, but we're going to have to push this season as far as we can so that we can crown a champion in 2020."

On Wednesday, however, MLS released a statement saying the league realized that a return to action by mid-May was unlikely.

In the statement, the league said: "Although we hoped to return to play in mid-May, that is extremely unlikely based on the guidance of federal and local public health authorities. Our goal remains to play as many games as possible, and while we currently have enough dates to play the entire season, we recognize at this time that it may become difficult to do so."

Garber added that MLS is closely monitoring its counterparts in England and Germany in regards to how those leagues are implementing testing and training protocols.

MLS has a training moratorium for its players until April 24, but Garber said that would be extended "at least a couple weeks."

Garber also said "nothing formal" has been discussed as far as a reduction of player wages but that those talks likely will take place.

MLS Players Association executive director Bob Foose told ESPN's Jeff Carlisle last week that the league had not approached the union about players taking salary cuts, and added that teams are better equipped than others throughout the world to cope with the effects of the pandemic.

In light of Real Salt Lake cutting the salaries of some employees and furloughing others, Garber said he expected more clubs to make decisions on the salaries of non-playing staff.

MLS announced last week that it cut the salaries of its top three executives, including Garber, by 25%, while also reducing management and other staff pay.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Will David Beckham have the same effect on MLS as an owner that he did as a player?
Graham Ruthven
Yahoo Sports

It was just a few weeks before the start of the 2002 World Cup when David Beckham showcased his new mohawk haircut on the front cover of GQ. Gelled into a central fin and colored with a streak of blonde, the style was something Beckham and his wife Victoria Beckham came up with themselves. Before too long it was a staple of every barber in the country. “Even [bankers] in the city were having it,” said Adee Phelan, Beckham’s former hairdresser.

That Beckham could take something so overtly ridiculous and make it mainstream underlined the influence he held over British culture. This knack for setting trends has defined his career both as a soccer player and a celebrity, and his 2007 move to the LA Galaxy allowed him to combine both as he became the very public face of soccer in the United States.

Beckham’s impact on MLS is well-documented. Everything that has grown and developed the league over the past decade or so can be traced, in one way or another, back to the moment the Englishman landed in California. He is without any question the most significant player in the history of MLS.

Now, he is an owner, exercising an option written into his original MLS contract to buy a franchise for $25 million. Together with Bolivian businessman Marcelo Claure, Korean-Japanese tech billionaire Masayoshi Son and brothers Jorge and Jose Mas, Beckham led an ownership group which oversaw the introduction of Inter Miami to the league this year.

So will Beckham have the same effect on North American soccer as an owner as he did as a player? After all, where he goes, others follow. He is at the center of a business and celebrity world that can be alerted to MLS’s potential. If he can get city bankers to go into work with a mohawk, surely he can attract a higher level of investment — and a higher caliber of investor — to the league.

Of course, MLS already boasts its fair share of high-profile club owners. Arthur Blank, the Home Depot co-founder with a net worth of over $5 billion, is the man behind Atlanta United. Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, bankrolls the New England Revolution. Then there’s Red Bull, which counts the New York Red Bulls as part of its international portfolio of clubs. New York City FC is operated by City Football Group, the same group that owns Manchester City.

MLS has even attracted celebrities to its ownership circle. In fact, it has become something of a trend in recent years with Will Ferrell, Magic Johnson and Tony Robbins all co-owners of Los Angeles FC and Drew Carey, Macklemore, Ciara and Russell Wilson all shareholders in the Seattle Sounders. James Harden even has a stake in the Houston Dynamo, and Steve Nash is involved with the Vancouver Whitecaps. The argument could be made that Beckham has already played a role in luring many of these names to MLS.

Either way, MLS surely hopes Beckham will make the league even more attractive to even richer prospective investors. While the structure of American sports is traditionally socialist, favoring trades and drafts over a true free market like the one in European soccer, the success and failure of major leagues is largely determined by more capitalist factors. Nothing accelerates the growth of a sport in the U.S. like franchise owners with deep pockets. Only two current NFL owners, for instance, have a net worth of under $1 billion.

The success of Atlanta United since their introduction to MLS just three years ago shows what can be achieved with genuine investment both on and off the field. Indeed, they have raised the league’s ceiling and set a precedent for the rest of North American soccer to follow. More figures like Blank are needed.

Beckham has already succeeded in luring the sort of investment Inter Miami needs to become major players in MLS. Son alone is pegged at a net worth of $22.9 billion, making him the richest franchise owner in the league. Inter Miami might be restricted from ploughing riches into big-money transfers (due to MLS’s structure), but such backing will certainly help them capture a notoriously difficult South Florida sports market.

The Inter Miami model covers all bases. In Beckham, they have a face recognizable to the American public. Behind the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star, there is a group of billionaires to sign the checks.

Figures like Beckham can only do so much to make MLS attractive to prospective owners and investors, though. The league itself must make changes to its centralized structure if it is to take the next step in its development. Salary caps must be raised, or abolished entirely. Clubs must be allowed to sign more than just three Designated Players. Owners have to be able to spend their money. Otherwise, MLS’s growth will always be limited.

MLS commissioner Don Garber’s recent criticism of big city teams failing to make waves suggests there is an acknowledgement within MLS HQ of the investment and direction the league needs from big business to progress beyond this point. “We have, unfortunately throughout the years, had some of our smaller markets be our most popular teams,” Garber said earlier this year. “And that’s great, but we’ve got to get our bigger markets — who have way more competition, and have a lot of history that they’re working through and working against — I’m looking forward to seeing them be more successful.”

For every Atlanta United and LAFC, there’s a San Jose Earthquakes. It’s as if MLS is stuck between two different eras: the previous era, when the league would embrace almost any ownership group if it moved them into a certain market, and the present era, when the league has sought ownership groups ahead of new markets.

How it transitions between the two will determine MLS’s future. In Beckham they have someone to help. Selling soccer in in the United States should be easy for someone who can make mohawks popular.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

T&T senior men’s international USA-based Major League Soccer (MLS) quartet of Kevin Molino, Joevin Jones, his brother Alvin Jones and Greg Ranjitsingh will have to continue their outdoor team training fields for individual workouts, in compliance with detailed health and safety protocols that were created in consultation with medical and infectious disease experts due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic until June 1.

This was confirmed in a May 14 release by MLS who announced that the players will continue to be able to use outdoor team training fields for voluntary individual workouts.

A team training moratorium has been in place since MLS suspended play on March 12 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Players were allowed to begin voluntary individual workouts last week, in accordance with detailed health and safety protocols and in line with local public health or government policies.

In the release issued on Thursday, MLS said it has extended the small group and team training moratorium through, and including June 1.

MLS players may continue to use outdoor team training fields for voluntary individual workouts, in compliance with local health authorities and government orders, that were created in consultation with medical and infectious disease experts.

MLS training facilities remain closed to all players with the exception of those requiring medical treatment or rehabilitation, under the direction of the team medical staff, that cannot be performed from the safety of their residences.

While MLS players are expected to remain in each club’s respective market, the league will continue to review individual requests by players to relocate to another market by car, taking into account the totality of a player’s situation.

MLS and its clubs will continue to remain in close contact with the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and local health authorities on this continually evolving situation and provide further updates as they become available.

With those protocols still in place, midfielder Molino and goalkeeper Ranjitsingh who are both attached to Minnesota United began voluntary individual training on Tuesday at the National Sports Centre in Blaine, Minnesota, their first session at the venue since the season was suspended in March.

The older of the Jones' brothers, Joevin and reigning MLS champions, Seattle Sounders are also set to begin individual workouts while Alvin's Real Salt Lake will follow soon following two months of individual at-home training sessions.

There was also good news for other USA-based T&T players who are attached to clubs in the United Soccer League Championship Division and League One who began individual workouts on Monday.

Small group settings will be limited to up to four players, with no more than one athletic trainer and one member of a club’s technical staff allowed on each field during a session. Teams in areas where local and state recommendations for stay-at-home orders have not been lifted should not train or allow treatment that is prohibited by their jurisdiction. In addition, all clubs will notify the league of their plans to return to the team’s training facility prior to re-opening and training is voluntary for players.

Among the players who returned to training were Andre Fortune (North Carolina), Leston Paul (Memphis 901 FC), Neveal Hackshaw (Indy Eleven), Duane Muckette (Memphis 901), Shannon Gomez (Sacramento Republic), Triston Hodge (Memphis 901 FC), Cordell Cato (OKC Energy), Kevan George (Charlotte Independence), Noah Powder (Real Monarchs), and Leland Archer (Charleston Battery), all in the United Soccer League Championship Division along with Josiah Trimmingham (Forward Madison) and Luke Singh (Toronto FC) of USL League One.

Further north, Canada-based Premier trio Akeem Garcia and Andre Rampersad, both of HFX Wanderers, and Kareem Moses (Edmonton FC) are all awaiting word on when or if their season will get going.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
