JR since you're close to the Union is there anyway that you can get an interview with Sheanon and ask him if he has any intention of joining the red black and white. There was an article a little while ago about him inquiring about joining but nothing has come from that.

I'm on it! It's offseason so there isn't too much contact from me personally, so I'll ask a close connection.  If not, I can def get an answer in February when I talk to the whole team in Orlando.

MLS, France launch coaching exchange.
By Associated Press.

NEW YORK -- Major League Soccer is sending its youth academy coaches to study abroad.

Personnel from teams in North America's top pro league will visit France's national training center in Clairefontaine. Coaches from the French soccer federation will teach the same player development skills they use at the club level there. Material from MLS, as well as the U.S. and Canadian federations, will also be in the curriculum.

The program features two weeks of immersion at the international youth academies of top European teams, including Real Madrid, Lyon, Paris Saint-Germain, Stuttgart and Athletic Bilbao.

As part of the arrangement, French officials will visit the sites of MLS teams to review youth academy procedures, and help coaches qualify for elite coaching licenses.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

MLS faces attendance challenge
By Paul Kennedy, Soccer Business Insider, socceramerica.com

Thanks to rising attendance, Major League Soccer has had a strong story to tell.

MLS averaged 18,807 fans a game in 2012 -- up 17 percent in just three years -- ranking third among American sports leagues, ahead of the NBA and NHL and behind the NFL and MLB, and sixth in the world among soccer leagues behind only the Bundesliga (Germany), Premier League (England), La Liga (Spain), Liga MX (Mexico) and Serie A (Italy).

(Both the Dutch Eredivisie and French Ligue 1 have both experienced decreases in 2012-13 that should drop them below MLS.)

But MLS faces perhaps its most challenging year in the last decade. For the first time since adding Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA in 2005, MLS will not welcome an expansion team or open a new stadium.

And it won't get the corresponding bump in attendance that these expansion teams and new teams have brought, especially in recent years.

Of the eight teams that averaged above the 2012 average of 18,807, seven were teams that arrived or opened a new stadium in 2009 or later. There was a difference of an average of almost 10,000 fans per game between those teams that arrived or opened a new stadium in 2009 or later and those teams that arrived or opened a new stadium before 2009.

For MLS to boost attendance this year, it will be entirely based on year-to-year jumps -- quite a challenge given that many of the best-drawing teams are at or near capacity to begin with.

More than ever, it will be back to basics for MLS clubs, making the work of ticket salespersons critical if MLS is to continue telling a positive storyline.

New teams/new stadiums (2009-12)
2012 AVG. TEAM (FIRST YEAR)
43,144 Seattle Sounders (2009)

City owners set for MLS franchise
By Kristan Heneage

The head of the owners of Manchester City is reported to be close to buying the franchise for a second MLS team in New York, the New York Times has reported.

Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, part of the Abu Dhabi royal family, whose private investment group owns City, is ready to invest a $100 million "expansion fee" to create the 20th MLS team. It will be based in Queens, may be called New York City FC and could begin playing in 2016.

The paper reported that a deal for the construction of a privately-funded $340 million stadium in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park was close, and an announcement on the new franchise could be made prior to May 25, when City face Premier League rivals Chelsea in a New York friendly.

Last week, the New York mayor, Michael Bloomberg, told reporters: "Hopefully, we're getting close to announcing a new soccer stadium here in Flushing Meadows Park."

Recently-deposed Premier League champions City will be making a third visit to the US in four years. Their City in the Community programme has seen pitches built across the country, including in Manhattan, in recent years.

Despite the franchise deal reportedly being at an advanced stage, the New York Times also reported that hurdles remain.

These include concerns over park space being lost to the stadium, and the need to gain planning approval for it.

City officials recently confirmed that they were in "active discussions" with the MLS about the proposals.

Stefan Szymanski, a professor of sports management at the University of Michigan, was quoted in the New York Times report as saying: "These are long-term investors - the Warren Buffetts of the Middle East.

"It almost doesn't matter what plays inside the stadium. It's the location, the city, that indicates it's a good investment."

Manchester City have not commented on the report.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

San Jose Earthquakes 1, Norwich City 0
Paddy Davitt, Norwich City Writer

Sunday, July 21, 2013
5:36 AM

Norwich slipped to a first defeat on their USA pre-season tour against a well-drilled San Jose outfit at Buck Shaw Stadium in the early hours of Sunday morning (BST).

Cordell Cato pounced a rare error from Russell Martin to calmly slot underneath Mark Bunn in the seventh minute. City gave debuts to both Dutch imports Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Leroy Fer but it was the MLS side who looked more likely to add to their slender lead. City’s club-record signing van Wolfswinkel earned himself a first half yellow card after a brief running skirmish with Quakes’ defenders Brad Ring and Dan Gargan. Fer looked an imposing figure when he was introduced at the interval but City were unable to seriously threaten home keeper David Bingham.

Chris Hughton kept only four of the starting line up from the midweek win over Mexican side Dorados de Sinaloa with Adel Gafaiti, Nathan Redmond, Alex Tettey and Jacob Butterfield all included again from the outset. Chris Hughton’s men got off to the worst possible start when Cato struck - much to the delight of the Ultras stationed behind the Norwich keeper’s goal.

City upped the ante with Anthony Pilkington sneaking behind Seven Beitashour before Jonny Howson tested Bingham from 20 yards out but the Quakes’ keeper parried to clear his lines. Walter Martinez then drifted away from Dani Ayala but dragged wide of Bunn’s goal as the MLS side exhibited little trace of any inferiority complex in the early stages.

Van Wolfswinkel displayed his pace and predatory instincts to race in behind Beitashour after anticipating Javier Garrido’s raking clearance but the Quakes’ defender recovered to intercept. The Dutchman then demonstrated his will to win despite the relaxed surroundings with a minor spat that started with Ring and ended with his team mate Gargan booked for an aggressive shove.

Pilkington’s free kick was plucked by Bingham before Redmond capitalised on defensive hesitancy to round Bingham only for Ring to foil the recent Birmingham signing. Van Wolfswinkel evened up the crime count after a lunging challenge on Ring earned him a debut yellow card and Garrido joined him for a clip on goalscorer Cato.

Ring bravely threw himself at van Wolfswinkel with the Dutchman ready to test Bingham five minutes prior to the interval, but San Jose finished the stronger as Mehdi Ballouchy sidefooted over from 20 yards after some sharp interplay around the edge of City’s penalty area.

Hughton rang the changes again at half-time in a repeat of the opening tour win over the Mexicans. Fer was the headline introduction with van Wolfswinkel making way for midweek goalscorer Luciano Becchio. Wes Hoolahan was also introduced for his outing of the tour in place of Butterfield. Fer’s goalscoring instincts saw him advance but unleash a rising hit that flew over. The dangerous Martinez then burst away from Ayala but skied over John Ruddy’s bar.

Pilkington teased his way into the Quakes area before sliding to Becchio but the Argentine could only strike a grounded home defender. Ayala’s affirmative action halted Marcus Tracy at the opposite end after the hosts’ sprung a sharp counter.

San Jose skipper Ramiro Corrales momentarily had Ruddy scrambling across his goal with City still second best in the sparring. The England keeper then dropped sharply on his goalline to foil Sam Garza after City were cut open down their left flank. Garza curled a golden chance wide to seal the win in the 87th minute after racing beyond a tiring City backline but guiding two yards beyond Ruddy’s left-hand upright. Shea Salinas had the final say when he slalomed his way around Ryan Bennett but fired over.

• San Jose Earthquakes: Bingham, Beitashour (Bernardez 62), Ring, Gargan, Stewart (Morrow 62), Cato, Ballouchy, Corrales, Garza, Salinas (Martinez 52), Tracy (Jahn 71). Subs (not used): Newton, Baca, Cronin, Lenhart.

Not even one MLS base on the US team?

U.S. calls up 23 players for camp
August 11, 2013
By Associated Press

Former Iceland international Aron Johannsson is among 23 players called up for the U.S. soccer team's training camp in Sarajevo ahead of its exhibition against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Johannsson is awaiting completion of paperwork that would make him eligible to play for the U.S. The forward, who plays for AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, needs approval from FIFA to make the switch because he played for Iceland in eight qualifiers for the 2012 UEFA Under-21 Championship.

The 22-year-old was born in Mobile, Ala., but moved back to his parents' native Iceland when he was 3.

Most of the players called up for the three-day camp are based in Europe, though coach Jurgen Klinsmann did bring in Seattle's Brad Evans and Eddie Johnson. Mexico-based Edgar Castillo, Joe Corona and Michael Orozco Fiscal also were included on the roster. U.S. captain Clint Dempsey, who just completed a move from England's Tottenham Hotspur to Seattle, was not brought in.

The Americans, who have a record 11-game winning streak, play Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday in Sarajevo. It is their only game before World Cup qualifying resumes Sept. 6 in Costa Rica.

"Our European-based players are just getting started with their seasons and this gives them a chance to get going a couple weeks before our big World Cup qualifiers," Klinsmann said. "We're also excited to bring some new faces into the senior team and have them start to become part of the group."

Team

Goalkeepers: Cody Cropper (Southampton, England), Brad Guzan (Aston Villa, England), Tim Howard (Everton, England).

Defenders: John Anthony Brooks (Hertha Berlin, Germany), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City, England), Edgar Castillo (Tijuana, Mexico), Brad Evans (Seattle), Michael Orozco Fiscal (Puebla, Mexico), Michael Parkhurst (Augsburg, Germany), Tim Ream (Bolton, England).

Midfielders: Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes, France), Michael Bradley (Roma, Italy), Joe Corona (Tijuana, Mexico), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg, Norway), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim, Germany), Jermaine Jones (Schalke, Germany), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht, Belgium), Danny Williams (Reading, England).

Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Sunderland, England), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna, Austria), Eddie Johnson (Seattle), Aron Johannsson (AZ Alkmaar, Netherlands), Bobby Wood (1860 Munich, Germany).

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Trinidadians in the MLS

How many of our guys play in the MLS,  how hard is it to get on a team there and why aren't more playing.  mls is improving.  Why are our guys going Asia when USA is closer and the football is better.

Carlyle Mitchell - Vancouver Whitecaps
Cordell Cato - San Jose Earthquakes
Kevan George - Columbus Crew
Nicholas Walker - FC Dallas
Kevin Molino - Orlando City (2015)

Trinis have played in the MLS all through the years, however, it's not easy to get in.

Pay in Asia is an order of magnitude higher, although racism and poor organisation are also prevalent.

I guess you can throw Nick DeLeon and Shaenon Williams if we're not talking about capped Trinis.  I think Molino and Cato have the brightest future as far as the list goes.  Both are LOVED by the fans and club and while Molino plays a more important roll and will get a ton of learning experience playing with the likes of KaKa, I think the MLS is soon to start reaching out to more Caribbean players. The combine earlier this year was a good start.
