There's ah talk bubbling this week that Sacramento Republic is looking to make a bid for the MLS. The team consistently fills its stadium and I've heard that it has become an attractive proposition for investors. The word is that talks are being held this week with the Kings organization. As such, Sac Republic should be on a young baller's radar.

Sacramento? That will be four teams based in California. Unless they movie Chivas to there. Heard them talking about Las Vegas and Atlanta. Atlanta would be a good place for a Trinidadian to fit nicely into the team and adjust easily. So many Trinis there. If I young player in Trinidad right now I would be trying to get a link up with NYCFC with their direct link to MCFC, that's a route to England. All we have to do is improve our rankings.

When Orlando enter the MLS, are we sure they taking their players, or will the recruit players that are MLS level.

Also re: Orlando signing players.

They can sign their own players, yes. Eg. Kevin Molino was their first MLS signing.
However, there will also be an expansion draft and they can draft unprotected players from current MLS teams, this will take place in the off season before they join the league next year.

I remember a month or so back watching an interview with Molino on TV6 and he was saying that possibly another Trini could be joining Orlando. Any word on that?

If it's the same rumour I've heard, they're weighing up their options as they have other countries interested

Thierry Henry announces his retirement from soccer to join Sky Sports in London
MLS Soccer

Thierry Henry has subbed off for the final time in his career.

On Tuesday morning, the French legend, who spent the past four and a half years with the New York Red Bulls, announced his retirement from soccer. He will now move back to London and join Sky Sports.

"It has been an incredible journey and I would like to thank all the fans, team mates and individuals involved with AS Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal FC, FC Barcelona, the New York Red Bulls and of course the French National Team that have made my time in the game so special," Henry wrote on his Facebook page.

Henry, 37, is retiring after more than 20 years as a professional. He leaves the game as one of the most feared strikers of his generation, having scored more than 350 goals in all competitions, including 52 total for the Red Bulls (regular season and playoffs) and a club record 228 for Premier League side Arsenal.

The 2006 FIFA World Cup saw Henry again leading the frontline for the French team that reached the final, where they lost to Italy on penalties after Zidane's infamous headbutt on Marco Materazzi. Henry again scored three goals in the tournament.

In 2007, Henry left Arsenal to join Spanish powerhouse FC Barcelona, where he helped the Blaugrana win consecutive La Liga titles in 2009 and 2010 as well as the 2009 UEFA Champions League.

After three years at the Camp Nou in Barcelona, Henry was ready for a new challenge, and MLS and the Red Bulls came calling in the summer of 2010. A lifelong fan of New York City, Henry embraced the Big Apple and immediately injected a new energy into the club, who had opened Red Bull Arena earlier that year.

Over four and a half seasons with the Red Bulls, Henry built on his already formidible legend, scoring 51 goals and 42 assists in 122 regular-season appearances. In 2013, he led the Red Bulls to the Supporters' Shield, given annually to the club with the best overall record. It was the Red Bulls' first major trophy.

But Henry could never get the club the ultimate prize in MLS: the MLS Cup. The closest he came was this past season, when the Red Bulls fell at the penultimate stage, losing to the New England Revolution in the Eastern Conference Championship.

Henry announced he would leave the Red Bulls a few days after the loss to the Revs. He will be rememberd as one of the best players in MLS history, a description which is only partially captured by the individual honors he picked up: three appearances on the year-end Best XI and four AT&T MLS All-Star nods.

Beyond the statistics and the accolades, he will be remembered by soccer fans around the world for his grace, his creativity, and his competitiveness.

"I have had some amazing memories (mostly good!) and a wonderful experience," he wrote. "I hope you have enjoyed watching as much as I have enjoyed taking part."

Brek Shea closing in on move from Stoke City to Orlando City
It looks like Brek Shea's rough stint abroad is officially coming to an end.
The 24-year-old U.S. national team winger is in the process of sealing a move to MLS expansion side Orlando City, according to Stoke City manager Mark Hughes.
"We envisage Brek completing his move to Orlando," Hughes said Thursday via Stoke's official Twitter account. "It hasn't been confirmed yet, but he was in the building yesterday trying to tie it up."
Shea, whose impending move to Orlando City was first reported by the Orlando Sentinel, has made just three first-team appearances for Stoke since joining the Premier League club in January 2013. The Texas native has also played 14 matches in the Championship during loan stints to Barnsley and Birmingham.
Before moving to England, Shea compiled 19 goals and 14 assists in five seasons with FC Dallas --€” finishing as an MVP finalist in 2011.

Orlando hosts NYC FC on March 8 MLS expansion opener.
BY ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK -- Orlando City hosts New York City FC on March 8 in the opening game for Major League Soccer's expansion teams.

The league said on Friday that NYCFC plays New England on March 15 in its home opener at Yankee Stadium.

MLS' 20th season starts on March 6 with the champion Los Angeles Galaxy at home against Chicago in a Friday night game. The following day's schedule has Montreal at D.C. United, Toronto at Vancouver, Columbus at Houston, Colorado at Philadelphia, Real Salt Lake at Portland and San Jose at Dallas.

Other March 8 openers have the New York Red Bulls at Sporting Kansas City and New England at Seattle.

San Jose opens Avaya Stadium, the 15th soccer-specific stadium in MLS history, on March 22 against Chicago.

Home openers on March 14 feature Vancouver at Chicago, Philadelphia at Salt Lake and Toronto at Columbus. New England hosts Montreal on March 21, when NYCFC is at Colorado. The following day, the Red Bulls host D.C. United.

Montreal plays its home opener March 27 against Orlando. Toronto will spend two months playing on the road during renovations to BMO Field before its home opener against Houston on May 10.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

2014 in Review: New York City FC dream big and make a splash ahead of inaugural MLS campaign
The year started with a coach and a sporting director.

It now finishes for New York City FC with a growing roster of 19 players, including Designated Players David Villa and Frank Lampard, and a hunger from a fan base already featuring 11,000 season ticket holders for the start of the inaugural season.

A few days removed from leading Real Salt Lake to the MLS Cup title game, Kreis ended his seven-year run with with RSL and was announced as the first NYCFC head coach on Dec. 10, 2013.

After an early January unveiling, Kreis immediately jetted off to Manchester to familiarize himself with sister club Manchester City’s set-up, beginning a year-long

On June 2, the club announced the signing of its first player – all-time Spain leading scorer David Villa. More than a month later, Lampard was introduced as the second Designated Player.

As those two cornerstones fell in place, Kreis and his staff starting using their knowledge of the league to bring in a group of experienced MLS players, the team revealed a new jersey and crest, and the puzzle of the expansion team started to take form.

Buzzworthy moment

There was already a buzz when NYCFC announced Villa as the team's first player. It went to another level in late July when Lampard was introduced to the media at a press conference in Brooklyn.

The Chelsea legend said he was ready to be an ambassador for the sport in North America, in the same vein as David Beckham when he signed with the LA Galaxy.

“It’s important, and I’m very aware of that role. I take it very strongly,” Lampard said of his new role. “Hopefully my football will do the talking. But as an ambassador to a new franchise, I think it’s important not just what we do on the pitch, but embracing the community.”

Lampard would soon be loaned to Manchester City, where he’s performed well in a second stint in the EPL. The possibility of a loan extension with the high-flying Blues has created its own worldwide buzz.

Stadium situation

The new franchise's first home stadium was announced in April, with the iconic Yankee Stadium serving as a temporary home for the 2015 season.

But where will the club’s permanent home be built? That is still very much up in the air.

The first site to be discussed was Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, even before the club was announced. That all but died, however, following opposition from parts of the community about building a stadium on parkland.

There were talks of a stadium across from Yankee Stadium, but New York City major Bill de Blasio expressed opposition. Then, NYCFC was reportedly interested in a site by Aqueduct Racetrack, back in Queens.

But the year ends without any concrete plans.

Supporters groups

The day it was announced there would be a second MLS team in the New York City area, Chance Michaels started a fan blog. Then in July, Michaels started a membership drive for the club’s first supporters group.

“I honestly didn’t know what to expect. When we first started this, there weren’t any players, there wasn’t a logo, there wasn’t anything,” Michaels said. “I thought if by the first match we could have 500 paid members, I’d be happy. We passed 500 members in three weeks.”

After a vote on the name, the Third Rail was born and the team itself immediately embraced the group.

“They participated in what the badge was going to look like, we let them choose where they wanted to sit at Yankee Stadium,” NYCFC Chief Business Officer Tim Pernetti said. “That’s the culture we’re trying to create. I think supporters are growing because they have access to this club.”
Coaching philosophy and tactics

Kreis said he was hired “for a reason,” and part of that reason was the attractive, possession-oriented soccer he employed at Real Salt Lake, usually with the team set up in a 4-4-2 diamond formation.

A former MLS star himself, Kreis explained that he learned the importance of building a team starting with the center of the park in his second year at RSL, and promptly backed up his words with the signings of Lampard and Villa.

“As we’ve gone from there, we’re looking for players to compliment those two players’ styles and also fit in with the way Manchester City wants to see the game played and also the way Claudio and I want to see the game played,” Kreis said. “We’re always looking for players who fit into the style of soccer and the type of group we want to be.”

Needs

1. A full roster: The roster has increased from six players to 19 in about two weeks following the conclusion of the MLS season, but it is still very much a work in progress.

The next phase, according to Reyna, includes college and international players.

The acquisition of the former will play out in the days leading up to the 2015 MLS SuperDraft on Jan. 15. As for the latter group, there's a possibility of up to four Manchester City youth players coming on loan, while Kreis and his staff have been scouring South America in an attempt to find the same kind of quality players he was known for signing at RSL.

2. Another DP: Kreis and sporting director Claudio Reyna have said that the club wants to bring in a third Designated Player prior to the start of the season.

Will that player be a USMNT regular? Perhaps Jozy Altidore or Mix Diskerud? Or could it be another international star? Maybe Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who has also been linked to the New York Red Bulls?

It’s all a bit murky right now and part of a roster build that has been less than fun for Kreis.

“Right now it feels like torture,” Kreis said. “But come Jan. 24 when we have the whole group together and we’re on the soccer field and I’m a soccer coach again, I’m going to be extremely happy that we were able to do it.”

MLS is  not that bad. There are some teams that are more exciting than others and I'm sure if they did good television coverage the game out look more exciting. I've always had a problem with how they present the product. The audio, the camera angles and announcers are all poor. I'm sure that Seattle Sounders, LA Galaxy and now New England Revolution are about as good as a middle table EPL teams.

Here's how they can improve their league

- Increase salary cap (pretty obvious)

-Better production for games (Announcers over explain things, quote meaningless stats. The cameras are too far, can never tell who ahs the ball, I hate hearing the sound of the ball and even in noisy stadiums they don't let you hear the crowd, they don't do slow-mos , nothing just bland production and I find American accents extremely annoying when listening to commentary and they aren't witty like English commentators either. just awful).

-Stop acting like players on their last legs are stars. ( the world laughs at the them when they do this).

-Stop Adidas sponsorship. ( Some might disagree but the kits look similar to me and Adidas makes some boring kits  to begin with) No team has a strong identity except maybe Redbulls and Seattle.

Stop the Conference non-sense. I saw Seattle play LA five  times in one season in regular MLS play. What is the point of that. Why can't they play each team Home and Away. Teams in the West will always have a it harder to win the Supporters Shield because that conference is much  harder.( for those of you that don't know, the Shield is given to the team with the most points at the end of the regular season) When you have to play LA, Portland, Salt Lake five times, meanwhile some teams in the east have to play lame teams like Chicago, Toronto, Columbus and DC it's no wonder the Eastern teams win the Supporters shield more often. Also the playoffs are unfair because the teams are harder in west and teams from the east just need to be good enough. They should make brackets that mix from east and west to decide the Championship.

No more expansion draft- By having new teams pick from an already talent deprived pool just makes the talent even more diluted. New teams, sign new players and trade when the window opens like normal. How stupid is it that teams have to submit a list of players 11, that they want to protect from being drafted to Orlando or NYCFC. You could end up loosing a valuable player.  Like Portland didn't protect Ricketts ( their starting Goal Keeper) and he was taken by Orlando. Why couldn't Orlando  just buy a  new keeper.

No more games during the International Window.

The commissioner needs to stop arguing with Klinsmann. Jurgen doesn't give a damn and the commissioner is just there arguing over everything he says. At the end of the day America is not a country with footballing knowledge, no one respects the commissioner (not even in America) but people do respect Klinsmann.

That's just my take on what I've seen from watching and following MLS.

Jamieson's star shines bright for LA & US l De Rossi reportedly interested in New York move
Here are the top 15 stories everyone's talking about this morning:

1. PATH TO PRO

USL is quite rightly being touted as an ever-more important rung on the ladder of professional soccer in the US, particularly with the growing number of MLS development sides. But it's not all wunderkinds and five-star prospects: there's always been room for guys who fall more into the "solid pro" category, and perhaps no-one better epitomises that than Luke Mulholland, the Real Salt Lake midfielder who worked his way up from the USL PDL to being a regular starter for one of the better teams in MLS.

2. MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Let's not forget the wunderkinds, though. Having made an impact for the US U20’s in CONCACAF qualifying, Bradford Jameson IV is showing the benefits of regular playing time for younger players in USL and according to the LA Galaxy II star, “as far as development goes, I think it’s going to be influential in the future of US Soccer.”

3. PROVISIONAL PLAYERS

Jamieson and 20 others are in the first U20 camp of the year for the US. Head coach Tab Ramos named both a 21-man camp and a 35-man provisional U20 roster for the upcoming CONCACAF Championship. There are 10 MLS players amongst the 35 names included, from which Ramos must select 20 by Friday.'

4. HOUSTON’S NEXT TARGET?

It seems that the Houston Dynamo’s signings won’t stop with Erick Torres, as reports over the weekend indicate the club could be closing in on 27-year-old Spanish defender Raul Rodriguez, currently with La Liga side Espanyol. The veteran center back would certainly fill a need.

5. AGITATED AGENT

The Dynamo have also expanded their current roster by officially signing Re-Entry Draft selection Chandler Hoffman. However, while the club also picked up Samuel Inkoom in a trade with D.C. United, it seems the Ghanaian's representatives have some issues with the deal.

6. LAFC’S LATEST ADDITIONS

LAFC have added a further two individuals to their ownership group with Lon Rosen and Tucker Kain, both currently executives with the LA Dodgers, coming on board for the new MLS Franchise. That brings the group to 24.

7. DE ROSSI AND THE BIG APPLE

Could an Italian World Cup winner be on his way to MLS? According to stories from Italy, Daniel De Rossi is considering a move stateside for the next stage of his career, with both the New York Red Bulls and New York City FC said to be interested in the 31-year-old midfielder. Take this one with a gigantic grain of salt as De Rossi, a former teammate of Michael Bradley who's perhaps best-known in US circles for breaking Brian McBride's face at the 2006 World Cup, looks the part of an AS Roma lifer.

8. NOUVEAUX AJOUTS?

A more reliable source is reporting that the Montreal Impact are on the verge of adding a pair of DPs ahead of the 2015 preseason, and could find a third, non-DP player in the mix as well. Given their heavy early-season schedule -- they're in the CONCACAF Champions League knockout rounds, remember -- the earlier the better for any and all new additions at Stade Saputo.

9. A CAREER IN SOUTH KOREA

Hey, ever wondered what Ryan Johnson’s up to since leaving MLS? Well, it looks like the Jamaican international is heading for a reunion with another former MLS man, Vancouver Whitecaps boss Martin Rennie, with reports that the striker is set to sign for the Scotsman’s South Korean side Seoul E-Land.

10. GARGAN TARGETS MORE

While Dan Gargan was brought into the LA Galaxy squad last season to provide much needed depth, circumstances meant that the versatile 32-year-old ended up in a starting role for much of the year. Will Gargan’s performances have been enough to earn him a regular spot in 2015?

11. THE EXPORT BUSINESS

While MLS players enjoy a well-earned holiday rest, Christmas is a particularly busy time for Americans in England, with export standouts Geoff Cameron and Brad Guzan both finishing the year with shutouts in the English Premier League.

12. HOWARD TARGETS 2018

Tim Howard, meanwhile, played no part in his Everton side’s 3-2 loss to Newcastle United having picked up a calf strain in the Boxing Day clash against Cameron’s Stoke City. Off the field the US international, who still hopes to play in the 2018 World Cup, has revealed that speaking to President Obama on the phone was nowhere near as daunting as an angry Sir Alex Ferguson.

13. KLJESTAN IS AVAILABLE

Could a Sacha Kljestan move to MLS still be on the cards? The US international certainly looks like he might be going somewhere after Belgian side Anderlecht revealed that the midfielder is available for “a fair offer”.

14. MEXICO: A TOP 10 TEAM?

Under manager Miguel Herrera, the Mexican national team seems to have found its way again. Herrera’s aims for 2015 are to win the Gold Cup and reach the final of the Copa America, and MLSsoccer.com contributor Tom Marshall thinks there should be a third target on the list: get Mexico back into the top 10 in FIFA’s world rankings.

15: THE OTHER GIANTS

If Mexico gets into the top 10, where does that leave the US? They're currently ranked 27th by FIFA, third place in CONCACAF behind Costa Rica (16) and El Tri (20), and have plenty at stake in this summer's Gold Cup. Here's Ives Galarcep's early prediction for Jurgen Klinsmann's roster.

The outrage expressed by New York City FC fans over not getting Lampard right now ... is laughable. Cyah believe this stance about Lampard burning his reputation in the US. Absolutely happy fuh Lampard and I find the outcome entirely predictable ... in that in this arrangement one club was always going to be second fiddle to the other.

Such a massive show of disrespect.  Should have never signed for the club if he didn't want to be there.  I would boo him every time he stepped on the pitch for nycfc if I were a fan

According to Soccer America:

Quote
In yet another twist to the story, it appears there was no loan deal between NYCFC and Manchester City, which means Lampard was never owned by NYCFC, which claimed in its signing announcement on July 24 it had signed him to a two-year contract beginning Aug. 1.

Nowhere does NYCFC ever refer to Lampard being on loan, and the MLS Players Union does not include him among the NYCFC players on its Sept. 15 salary list. He'd be on the list if he was on loan from NYCFC to Manchester City. Wednesday's announcement refers to Lampard's contract being extended, not a loan agreement being extended.

That's why I asked above what I asked.

The one who is causing the problem is the MLS, they know what's been going on and did not come out and clarify anything.

Steven Gerrard signs 18-month LA Galaxy deal
UK Guardian

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/jan/07/steven-gerrard-contract-la-galaxy-liverpool

Steven Gerrard will join Los Angeles Galaxy at the end of the season in an 18-month deal worth around £4m a year, describing the move to the MLS club as a “match made in heaven”.

Gerrard’s departure will end a 27-year association with Liverpool, with the captain to start playing for Galaxy in July. With the franchise having won the Major League Soccer Cup three times in past four years, Gerrard wants to end his career on a winning note.

“The time’s right for myself and my family for the change, for the fresh challenge,” he told the LA Times. “I want to finish my career very strong. I want to add some more medals and trophies to my collection. So I think it’s a match made in heaven. One of the reasons why I chose LA Galaxy was because of the success they’ve had recently but also the plans for more success in the future.”

Bruce Arena, the Galaxy coach who has been in charge for all of the three MLS titles over the past four years, said: “Steven Gerrard arrives in July and by then we will certainly have a plan available. He’s a player of quality. I’m not concerned about how he’s going to fit in. We have a club with a proven history of success. All those things go hand in hand in making LA Galaxy a very attractive team for players such as Steven Gerrard.”

The Galaxy president, Chris Klein, said: “We just started thinking in the universe of players that are out there, we want to make a decision on what signifies a Galaxy-designated player. When we look at that, Steven Gerrard is the perfect fit with what he brings to us on the field and the character that he has off it.”

Confirmation of the deal came after the fallout continued over the manner of Gerrard’s leaving of Liverpool. The 34-year-old said he would still be at Anfield next season had the club offered him a contract extension last summer and not in November, by which stage Brendan Rodgers had made clear Gerrard would no longer be an automatic selection.

“If a contract had been put in front of me in pre-season I would have signed it,” Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo. “I’d just retired from England to concentrate all my efforts on Liverpool. I didn’t want my club games to be tailored.

“My injury record had been fantastic for the past two and a half years and I had a great season from a personal point of view last season. It’s all ifs, buts and hindsight now. That period between the summer and the end of November gave me thinking time.

“There’s no blame and I’m not angry about it. There are other people in the squad and the club had other things to worry about. Liverpool Football Club have been unbelievable for me since I was eight years old. This club has helped me fulfil my dreams over and over again. There is no finger pointing from me towards the manager or anyone else at the club.”

Danny Murphy believes the manner of Gerrard’s departure “stinks.” The former Liverpool and England team-mate of Gerrard told Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “You can only be judged on the season you’ve just played and, last season, he was terrific. He probably felt he’d warranted a new contract at that point. Liverpool let it get to November or December before they offered him anything. In fact, that offer was only triggered by Stevie going out in the press and saying he hadn’t been offered a new deal. That says to me that the club, and Brendan [Rodgers], were already thinking about him moving on.

“Each manager has his own opinion and Brendan is not going to come out and say, ‘that was my decision’. It stinks a bit that they treat a player like that. We saw the same thing with Chelsea and Frank Lampard. Clubs say: ‘We have offered him a new deal’ but it’s always on reduced wages. It’s not how you should treat someone who’s put their all into a club.”

MLS and British broadcaster Sky Sports announce groundbreaking partnership
MLSSoccer.com

Major League Soccer announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with British sports broadcaster Sky Sports to televise league matches live in the United Kingdom, marking the first time Sky Sports will own MLS broadcast rights. The four-year multimedia deal begins with the kickoff of MLS’s landmark 20th season.

As part of the new agreement, Sky Sports will broadcast at least two MLS regular-season matches each week, as well as the AT&T MLS All-Star Game, every MLS Cup Playoff game, and the MLS Cup final. The matches will appear across Sky's family of networks.

The UK-based broadcaster will also carry weekly MLS highlights across various platforms, including Sky Sports News and SkySports.com.

Sky Sports will also broadcast at least one match from MLS's new "Decision Day" – the recently announced format change for the final day of the MLS regular season, during which all Eastern Conference games will be played simultaneously at 5 pm ET (9 pm UK time) followed by all Western Conference games at 7 pm ET (11 pm UK time). Many of the matches are expected to determine the final spots for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

MLS on TV: Find out where you can watch MLS games in the US and Canada
“As MLS continues to grow into a global brand, we are excited to partner with Sky Sports, a leader in the UK TV market, to bring the sport to millions of soccer fans,” said Gary Stevenson, president and managing director, MLS Business Ventures, in a statement. “2015 is a milestone year for MLS including new stars, new clubs and a new brand. Sky Sports will help continue to grow the League and clubs worldwide.”

“Football in the US and Canada has enormous potential for growth and we can’t wait to bring this competition to our viewers for the first time,” said Sky Sports Managing Director Barney Francis. “Thierry Henry has joined us [as an on-air pundit]. He created fantastic memories in MLS, and we look forward to seeing more of those great stories from across the Atlantic.”

Henry played for the New York Red Bulls for nearly five seasons before retiring from the game after the 2014 season.

“I saw the passion of the fans in the US and Canada," he said in a statement. "They have always had it for other sports but they also have it for football now and it’s going to be huge in years to come. Sky Sports is the best place for the game, to bring it closer to fans in the UK and build MLS even more.”

Henry is just one of several Sky ambassadors. Another is David Beckham, the retired two-time MLS Cup champion with the LA Galaxy who is currently spearheading an MLS expansion bid in Miami. He sees the new deal with Sky Sports as another step in the evolution of MLS.

"This is another important moment that shows the continued growth of MLS," he said in a statement. "I have seen first-hand how popular soccer has become in America. Having fantastic partners such as Sky Sports on board will not only add to the coverage of the game, it will also broaden its appeal outside of the US."

The deal was negotiated with MLS’ new global media rights agent, IMG, as part of a continued focus to bring MLS to more fans around the world and grow the relevance of the league.
