Spurs spree nets Malbranque and Chimbonda

Jon Brodkin and Dominic Fifield
Wednesday August 30, 2006
The Guardian

Tottenham Hotspur are braced for a breathless close to the transfer window, with yesterday's purchase of the Egyptian striker Mido merely the start of hectic activity at White Hart Lane. Steed Malbranque and Pascal Chimbonda were last night poised to join the club, and at least two players are set to depart.
After a busy day of negotiations Spurs agreed a fee with Wigan Athletic for Chimbonda and looked certain to get Malbranque from Fulham in a deal which is likely to see Wayne Routledge move in the opposite direction. Chimbonda's arrival clears the way for Lee Young-pyo to join Roma, the club from whom Mido has signed for Spurs for £3.4m.
Tottenham need to improve on a disappointing start to the season which has featured defeats to Bolton Wanderers and Everton, and the signings should boost the squad and fans. The club is not short of funds, especially after selling Michael Carrick to Manchester United, and their outlay on Mido, Malbranque and Chimbonda will amount to about £11m. They have already spent heavily on Didier Zokora and Dimitar Berbatov.
Spurs are set to beat West Ham to the signing of Malbranque after trumping the Upton Park club yesterday by agreeing a deal with Fulham for the midfielder worth £2.5m. Malbranque's preference is to join Tottenham. He had been due to have a medical at West Ham but has switched his attention to Spurs.

Tottenham moved swiftly after West Ham had a £2m offer accepted for the 26-year-old, and the deal is attractive to Fulham because it carries a higher value and allows them to end their search for a right-winger by getting Routledge. The former England under-21 international joined Spurs from Crystal Palace last summer but failed to establish himself and spent the second half of last season on loan at Portsmouth.

The impending arrival of Chimbonda will end Tottenham's lengthy pursuit of the French right-back. Their chairman, Daniel Levy, has agreed a fee with Wigan's manager, Paul Jewell, that could rise to the asking price of £5.25m, and only a medical can now prevent Chimbonda from making the switch to White Hart Lane that he has craved all summer.

Wigan will pocket a significant profit on Chimbonda, whom they bought for £400,000 from Bastia a year ago. Chimbonda has since broken into the France squad, and Jewell has a ready-made replacement in Emmerson Boyce, a summer signing from Crystal Palace. Jewell is still looking to add a left midfielder to his squad and also hopes to sign Jason Euell from Charlton Athletic, though he faces competition from Middlesbrough for the 29-year-old. Charlton, meanwhile, are hopeful of signing the Senegal defender Souleymane Diawara from Sochaux.

Chimbonda's move to Spurs will clear the way for Roma to get Lee, who has been playing at right-back ahead of Paul Stalteri this season but will be used in his more traditional left-back role by the Serie A club. Lee spent only one season at White Hart Lane after joining from PSV Eindhoven.

"Tottenham and AS Roma have agreed in principle to the transfer of Lee Young-pyo," Lee's agent, Chin Sung-won, said yesterday. "We are in talks with AS Roma on detailed contract terms. You can consider the deal as almost sealed, as the only remaining procedure is the player's decision."

Roma are confident of sealing the deal and also hope to get Rodrigo Defendi, a 20-year-old defender, from Spurs. Mido was delighted to return to Tottenham, where he was on loan for 18 months and got 11 goals last season. "I'm very happy to be back," the striker said. "It was, and it always will be, a great honour for me to play for Tottenham. I always knew in my heart I would be coming back. It is a fantastic move for me, I have some good friends here and it will be good to be back with the lads."

Tottenham's head coach, Martin Jol, said: "He knows I like him as a player, his strength in the air and his mentality. It's an excellent addition to the squad and our striking options are now complete."

 This is probably true.

The man carrying a serious condition in his knee since before the WC, why yuh think he did not play any WC games ?
He aggravated it during practice.
Before any transfer is made you must do a medical for insurance purposes.
If he do this medical and it prove that he have to do the knee operation, then that is probably the end of his overseas carreer.
Ah cant see how he getting out of doing one if he want to play for a new club.

Stoke & Derby keen on Stern John

Stoke & Derby keen on Sky Blues striker
fansfc.com

Stern John is a target for the Championship duo.

The Trinidad & Tobago international has netted 22 times in 51 starts since joining Coventry from Birmingham City in the 2004/05 season.

He has not always been a regular in the side however and had a loan spell with Derby last season.

He began the current campaign alongside Dele Adebola at the Ricoh Arena but the recent sale of Gary McSheffrey looks to have heralded a change in style for Micky Adams' side and John looked ill at ease playing alongside new signing Kevin Kyle at the weekend.

Plymouth Argyle are still locked in talks to bring Southampton striker Kenwyne Jones to Home Park.

As previously reported by Plymouth Vital, the Pilgrims have tabled a bid for the big target man, although the £750,000 transfer fee quoted in a national newspaper is wide of the mark.
Sources in Southampton have indicated to Plymouth Vital that talks are still ongoing between the two clubs, although these will have to be concluded soon to beat the transfer window deadline of midnight on Thursday.
One added complication to the deal is the possible sale of Ricardo Fuller from Southampton to Stoke City, which would leave Southampton short of attacking options.

Jones, a Trinidad and Tobago international, played against England in the recent World Cup in Germany.
Plymouth manager Ian Holloway has made no secret of the fact that he wants to sign a big powerful striker and the 6-foot 2-inch tall Jones would certainly fit the bill.

I guess no Crystal Palace for Sancho.
Can you imagine Yorke from league champ to Sunderland??
I cant see Stern going back to Derby.
All the teams interested in players in lower spots than the team they on now, except for Plymouth and Jones, and with Fuller possibly moving on, he might actually see more game time.
Glad is not me advising them on these choices.
Its still early in the season, the table will look completely differnt in a few weeks, they have 1 more day.

RANGERS are in a stand-off with Austria Vienna over the transfer of defender Sasa Papac.
The Ibrox club tabled a second offer for the Bosnian defender last night - but it was swiftly rejected by the Austrians, who want £1million.
Rangers believe they have offered a fair price for the 26-year-old, who is desperately waiting for the green light to complete his move.
Marvin Andrews has rejected the chance to move to Reading on a three-year deal as he wants to stay in Scotland near his church in Kirkcaldy.
His agent John Viola revealed: "He wants to stay and fight for a place in the team."

Hammers to land Corinthians duo
Sky Sports
By Graeme Bailey & Patricio Figueroa -  Created on 31 Aug 2006

West Ham United are set to pull off a major coup by the signing Argentine stars Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano, skysports.com can reveal.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United were all thought to be competing for the duo, along with some of the continents elite including Bayern Munich and Milan.

However, The Hammers have struck a deal with Media Sports Investments (MSI) - who own the rights to the Corinthians pair.

South American sources claim Portsmouth were also in line to broker a move, but it seems MSI have decided that a move to West Ham will best serve their prize assets.

The deal is believed to be initially for a season-long loan for the duo - but it could become permanent if all parties are happy, although it remains to be seen whether West Ham could affor them with both players carrying price tags of over £15 million.

The pair are both currently already in England ahead of this weekend's Brazil versus Argentina clash at Arsenal's brand new Emirates Stadium and this has aided the move.

A statement on Tevez's website claims a move is done for himself and Mascherano.

"Carlitos Tevez along with his former Corinthians team-mate, Javier Mascherano, has signed a contract to play with West Ham United of England," read the statemen

Gunners to land 'Beast' for Reyes
Sky Sports
By James Pearson -  Created on 31 Aug 2006

Jose Antonio Reyes is set to end his spell with Arsenal by joining Real Madrid.

It is being claimed that The Gunners have struck a deal with the Spanish giants that sees them secure Julio Baptista and €3 million (£2 million).

Reyes, formerly of Sevilla, has made no secret of his desire to return to La Liga and is now appears his wish is set to be fulfilled.

The 22-year-old made a bright start to his early career with a number of spectacular goals, although he failed to really settle in London.

Baptista, who joined Real for £13.8 million last summer from Sevilla, has failed to make his mark at El Santiago Bernabeu.

Now with Fabio Capello in charge of the Galacticos, the Italian tactician is keen to free up a non-EU place in his squad by allowed Baptista to leave.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been chasing Baptista for over a year after originally trying to bring him to The Premiership prior to his Real switch.

Spurs were keen on the Brazilian, however, they were rejected by The Beast who is now set for Arsenal with Reyes poised to move in the opposite direction.

Good ketch for Wenger, will restore some toughness to the midfield which they lost when Viera left.

Kranjcar joins Pompey

Sky Sports
By Mark Buckingham -  Created on 31 Aug 2006
Portsmouth have clinched the signing of Croatia international Niko Kranjcar.

The 22-year-old emerged as a late transfer target for Pompey after Harry Redknapp lost out to Aston Villa for Stilian Petrov.

A deal was quickly put in place for Kranjcar, who is rated as one of the brightest playmaking talents in Europe.

He has signed a four-year contract with the Premiership club after opting to leave Hajduk Split in his homeland.

Pompey flew their medical team out to Zagreb where Kranjcar is preparing for Croatia's upcoming Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia next week.

Kranjcar passed the medical before signing his deal with Redknapp's side and caps a busy few days in the transfer market for the South Coast club.

Pompey is lookin good.
