This moves makes sense and is logical all around but I would have liked to have seen him play at least 2 more years in Europe...looks like 30 is becoming the mandatory retirement age for the epl.

Not good enough to contribute thru out the season at Spurs; he got exposed at Spurs and was brought back down to earth. I guess he doesn't want to head back in the direction he came from, so he decided tuh buss it for the states.

Yeah, he woulda be riding pine at Spurs, not because he not good enough... but because there are better players ahead of him on the depth chart.  He could have stayed in England and found takers though.

Yeah I sure he could have gone to a lower table or one of the promoted clubs. They always looking for people with premiership experience. But why fight up with a relegation struggle when yuh could go back stateside, get big money and be a big fish in a small pond. The MLS and the press will stroke his ego like a you know what.

Well done Jan. Also well done Central FC.

So FS, which clubs are on the cards for being brought to sweet T&T for next  preseason as we are the new hot destination for football training, scouting. Jess ask Walsall. All those teams like Barnsley who got promoted on goals by Clint Marcelle, teams like Hull that had dey ass saved from relegation in the dying minutes by our players. Teams like Port Vale that Tony Rougier made himself a legend, even big boys like Nottingham Forest, Coventry that stern-turn-inho played his heart out for, and the tons of other teams that Hector Sam, Rougier, Ince, Shaka played for. Wrexham in Wales which was a crucial stepping stone for Carlos, Tallest, Spann and others. Not to mention the Scottish sides like East Fife and others that our world cup boy from Mayaro (Collin Samuel!) played for as well as Dog Andrews and our midfielder from North east stars .... Ahmm ... Oh gorm! .. Dwarika!

LOL. They were our first thoughts back in April when it looked certain they would get promoted. Thing is, it's not just who the team are, we need to bring over teams that will be a bit flexible. You know how T&T is....we couldn't even confirm Walsall's hotel until the day before they arrived! Next time will be easier, but the Head coach needs to be someone we can work with. We spoke to Dundee, but the coach there didn't seem flexible enough.

Transfer news: Chelsea confirm Eto'o as latest signing
The 32-year-old will be reunited with former manager Jose Mourinho
By JAMES ORR

Chelsea have signed Samuel Eto'o from Anzhi Makhachkala on a one-year contract.

The transfer of the Cameroonian looks to have finally marked the end of Chelsea’s pursuit of Wayne Rooney in this transfer window, as Eto’o had always been Chelsea’s Plan B option for a striker throughout the summer if a move for Rooney did not materialise. It now appears that Rooney’s immediate future is at Old Trafford, after he took to his Facebook page yesterday to publicly thank the United fans for their support in the 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Monday night.

The 32-year-old Eto’o will reportedly be taking a £10m pay cut from his £17m per year salary with Anzhi to reunite with former manager Jose Mourinho at Chelsea. However, the Russian side are believed to have given him a £1m lump sum pay-off to get him off their wage bill.

Eto’o won the treble under Mourinho at Internazionale in 2010..

"I am very happy to be here but also anxious because I want to get playing as soon as possible," Eto'o told Chelsea's website.

"It wasn't a hard decision. I saw the qualities Chelsea have, and I was very happy with Jose Mourinho before, so when the opportunity came, I was very happy to take it.'

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Transfer news exclusive: Leighton Baines sets his heart on reunion with David Moyes at Manchester United
By SAM WALLACE

England defender has asked Everton manager Roberto Martinez to agree a deal for move to Old Trafford.

The Everton defender Leighton Baines has asked his manager Roberto Martinez and the club's chairman Bill Kenwright to agree a deal to sell him to Manchester United, The Independent understands.

The left-back has been the subject of three bids from United this summer, for £9m, £12m and as part of a joint bid worth up to £30m, including Marouane Fellaini, all of which have been rejected. It is anticipated that United will bid for a fourth time before the transfer window closes on Monday.

Baines met with Martinez on the first day of pre-season to tell the new Everton manager that he wanted the club to negotiate a deal with United. Since then Baines, 28, has not missed a training session when fit and has played in both Premier League games so far this season. He was named as a substitute in Everton's Capital One Cup second-round tie against League One side Stevenage tonight.

Since that original meeting with Martinez, which followed United's first bid, Baines has reiterated his desire that Everton try to agree a deal. He has met with Martinez, on a number of occasions, and Kenwright. His position has not changed: he would like the opportunity to play for United, not least to play in the Champions League.

Baines' former manager David Moyes has prioritised the signing of the left-back since taking over at Old Trafford as Patrice Evra has only one year remaining on his contract. Baines has two years left on his existing deal.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Vlad Chiriches arrives in London to complete £8.5m Tottenham move
By SIMON RICE

Tottenham target Vlad Chiriches is in London to finalise a move to White Hart Lane.

The Steaua Bucharest centre-back is expected to join for a fee of £8.5m as Spurs continue to strengthen the squad with the impending departure of Gareth Bale.

Should the 23-year-old Romania international complete his transfer, he is likely to be joined by Erik Lamela and Christian Erikson as Andre Villas-Boas splashes the cash following agreement over a world record fee with Real Madrid for Bale.

Chiriches has been capped 19 times by Romania and will be seen as a vital addition to a depleted defence.

Earlier this summer Steven Caulker was sold to Cardiff City while William Gallas was released. Steven Caulker has completed his move to Cardiff for a fee in the region of £9m that has broken the club's previous transfer record, set when they signed Andreas Cornelius earlier this summer.

The young England defender had been linked with Liverpool and Manchester City but Cardiff have pulled off a coup to land the 21-year-old.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

UEFA president Michel Platini calls transfers ‘a robbery,’ wants reform

By Associated Press, Updated: Friday, August 30, 10:45 AM
http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/dcunited/uefa-president-michel-platini-calls-transfers-a-robbery-wants-reform/2013/08/30/caea0360-1182-11e3-a2b3-5e107edf9897_story.html

MONACO — UEFA president Michel Platini has called for a reform to the transfer window, labeling the current system a “robbery.”

With Real Madrid on the verge of paying $132 million for Gareth Bale, Platini says something needs to change.

Platini says “I think transfers are a robbery ... it’s an opportunity for a lot of people to make a lot of money.”

Platini wants the transfer window to be shortened and is looking into the possibility of all European leagues starting at the same time.

The UEFA president reiterated his stance against goal-line technology.

How can Real Madrid afford Gareth Bale?
Posted by Sean Smith
http://espnfc.com/blog/_/name/espnfcunited/id/8961?cc=5901

Almost exactly four years since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka at a combined cost of £140 million, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is expected to present the traditional white shirt to another Galactico.

For Perez, the signing of Gareth Bale will be a victory -- further evidence of his astuteness in the transfer market and ability to bring the best financial results to the club he has presided over for 10 years, over two stints.

But for many, the question remains: How can Real Madrid afford to pay so much for a single player? A world-record £86 million transfer fee alongside a reported salary of £8 million (take-home pay) a season means the club will have forked out £134 million over the course of the Welshman's mooted six-year contract.

Real Madrid are £500 million in debt, according to reports, are under investigation by the EU over allegations of receiving illegal state aid regarding colluding with the city council over the price of land around Bernabeu, and are close to losing what is seen as their biggest competitive advantage -- the ability to negotiate their own TV rights. (Sources quote that Barcelona and Real currently secure themselves 23% each of the revenue from the TV market).

As Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger commented over the weekend: "It makes a joke of the financial fair play regulations. I find it amazing that in the year the regulations come in, world football has gone completely crazy."

But Real Madrid are in no kind of trouble.

Firstly, the headline debt figure of £500 million widely quoted in newspapers in July is taken wildly out of context and does not get close to telling the story of Real Madrid's finances.

That top-line debt figure is misleading as it includes things like season-ticket sales for the upcoming campaign, and transfer fees not scheduled to be paid in that year's accounts, both of which are more liabilities than debts.

If you looked at the same figures for Arsenal and Manchester United, for example, you would get a debt of £849 million and £458 million, respectively. Those figures are shouldered on much smaller revenues, as well: United pull in a full £100 million less than Real Madrid a year, while Arsenal bring in £191 million a year less than the Spanish club.

But if you apply UEFA's definition of debt, the figure is a lot smaller. Real Madrid had bank debts of £125 million in its 2011-12 accounts, and with cash at the bank of about £84 million the club has a debt of about £41 million. Adding transfer liabilities brings the figure to £106 million -- sizeable but very manageable considering their ability to generate such large revenues.

Those revenues have made the Spanish giants the biggest club in the world. Real Madrid topped the Deloitte's Annual Review of Football Finance for the fourth year running with an annual revenue of €513 million (£440 million) for its 2011-12 accounts.

And that figure is going up: Revenue has risen at least 10 percent year on year for the last four seasons. Real Madrid -- even without a boost in revenue from a new marquee signing like Bale -- would expect to post an extra £80 million in revenue by the end of next season.

A planned law change to force Real Madrid and Barcelona into collective TV rights in Spain will cut revenue slightly, but the £15-20 million they are likely to lose in TV revenue will be more than made up by rising merchandise sales.

Perez's genius in taking Real Madrid from a financially battered club up to the most bankable club of the modern era is based upon seemingly crazy spending on big signings.

He believes that the really big stars in world football -- the Galacticos -- will eventually pay their own way in merchandising sales. And he has been proved right time and time again.

Real Madrid's previous transfer-fee record was in 2009 when they tempted Ronaldo away from Manchester United for what was a world-record fee of £80 million. At the time, Perez boasted that he will make the money back in merchandise sales.

It was no idle boast, either, as the club announced just a year later that they had made £90 million, mainly on the back of shirt sales of the Portuguese forward's No. 9 jersey and other memorabilia in the preceding year. That included 1.2 million shirt sales in Madrid alone.

The club had been there before. In 2003, when they brought David Beckham over from United for a fee of £35.1 million, the club were fourth in the Deloitte football finances table. By 2005, they were on top -- where they have remained -- primarily on a 67 percent rise in sales of merchandise, thanks to the pretty one's global appeal. Beckham has sold £1 billion worth of shirts during his career -- and 1 million shirts in his first year in Real Madrid alone.

Looking to strike oil twice, Real brought in Kaka from AC Milan in the same window as Ronaldo for £56.1 million. The Brazilian striker's popularity in Asia helping to recoup the huge outlay.

But will Bale have the same effect as Ronaldo or Beckham? Football experts are already questioning the value Bale will bring as a player with just one season of Champions League experience behind him, and little exposure to the kind of pressure associated with playing for a truly global football club.

While he is not established as a superstar, playing for Real Madrid should push him into the appropriate spotlight. And he taps into the Premier League audience, which is now truly global. More than 40 percent of the last TV-rights contract for the English league was made up of foreign sales.

Bale will be the first Galactico since Ronaldo in 2009, and well-timed as the world climbs slowly out of recession. Perez is betting that the global fan base is ready to spend £60 million each on a new shirt for a new modern superstar.

With such profit to be made, the question people should be asking is not can Real Madrid afford it, but why aren't they spending silly money more often?

ProSoccerTalk’s Top 20 players to watch in the transfer window
By Joe Prince-Wright (prosoccertalk).

In January the rumor mill runs into overdrive, as you’ve already seen countless deals being shut down or speculated during the opening week of the transfer window reopening.

Hopefully this list will help clear the murky waters for you, as ProSoccerTalk picks out our top 20 players you should watch during the January transfer window, which opened on January 1 and will slam shut at midnight on January 31. Here’s where you can find all the details as to how the window works in the Premier League.

From clubs in the Premier League and across Europe, these players are either wanted because of sensational form so far this season, a falling out with their current manager or just fancy a change of scenery. This time of year usually doesn’t provide the best value for money, but there’s certainly some gems out there.

Keep this list of elite soccer stars handy throughout the month of January, as many will surely be on the move to some of Europe’s biggest teams.

Let the fun begin!

1. Iker Casillas

Having lost his place in the Real Madrid starting lineup last season under Jose Mourinho, it was all meant to be so different this season for Casillas when new boss Carlo Ancelloti arrived. But Diego Lopez is still the number one as Casillas has been firmly rooted to the bench. Captain of the Spanish national team and Madrid, Casillas said last year he may leave Real to further his career and it seems as though Manchester City and Arsenal are willing to offer him an escape route. On his day, the best ‘keeper in the world.

Price: $15-20 million

2. Edin Dzeko

In the starting lineup at the moment due to Sergio Aguero‘s injury, Dzeko has been in and out of the City team this season. How much more of this can he take? Manuel Pellegrini likes the Bosnian forward, but surely he wants to be playing regularly before the 2014 World Cup this summer. With top clubs across Europe clambering to snap him up if City let him leave, the bustling striker won’t be short of options.

Price: $25 million

3. Juan Mata

Sulking at Southampton after being substituted, Spanish international Mata is becoming increasingly frustrated by his role at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho. The 25-year-old is a magician capable of unlocking any defense, but Chelsea has the likes of Oscar, Willian and Hazard to do that. Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli and Inter Milan are all ready to snap him up.

Price: $38-42 million

4. Diego Costa

This man has terrorized defenses in Spain for the last year and this season, he’s already scored 19 goals in 17 La Liga matches for Atletico Madrid. The Brazilian born forward made the big call of switching his national allegiance to Spain, and the 25-year-old will surely be at the 2014 World Cup. Diego has a release clause of $47 million and has long been linked with Chelsea and Arsenal, who could both do with a top striker. Who will make the move?

Price: $47 million

5. Fredy Guarin

Highly rated central midfielder from Inter Milan, the Colombian terrier gets stuck in and could become a key cog for any Premier League side in the engine room. He’s get a great strike on him, plus his style would suit the rambunctious midfield battles in England. Chelsea are sniffing around but don’t be surprised if others make a bid.

Price: $15-20 million

6. Adam Lallana

Southampton’s captain and leading light, Lallana led the Saints to an impressive start to the PL season. He’s since gone on to win his first England caps and performed admirably against Chile and Germany. Many of England’s top clubs are trying to snap him up, but it will take a lot of cash to steal the Englishman’s silky skills away from St. Mary’s. Manchester United are interested, as are Liverpool but Lallana seems happy at Saints… for now.

Price: $25-30 million

7. Fabian Schar

FC Basel performed superbly in the Champions League and young Swiss defender Schar is set for a massive future on the European stage. Chelsea and Spurs are interested as the 22-year-old is comfortable on the ball and loves to step into midfield. Ball-playing center backs are a valuable commodity these days.

Price: $20-25 million

8. Jackson Martinez

Chelsea have been tracking FC Porto’s Martinez for quite some time, as the pacey attacker is full of goals and gives defenders a torrid time. He has a knack of popping up to score crucial goals and his tremendous athleticism seems him as the perfect PL player. Mourinho loves to raid his old club Porto, too.

Price: $35-40 million

9. Jeremy Menez

Following his move from AS Roma in 2011, Menez has struggled to get into the team ahead of PSG’s growing band of stars this season. Menez is available on a free transfer in June, but he could be a seriously good pick up for any team looking for a pacey winger who can get to the byline and deliver delicious crosses. Bargain.

Price: $10-12 million

10. Ander Herrera

The Athletic Bilbao man nearly joined Manchester United last summer but the deal fell through. A midfielder general who loves to spray the ball around, Herrera would be an automatic starter at Old Trafford and his qualities are much needed in David Moyes‘ midfield. His price should drop considerably in January, will the Red Devils dive in for a second time?

Price: $30-35 million

11. Javier Pastore

Like Menez, this man has struggled to force his way into PSG’s starting XI after the likes of Cavani, Lavezzi and Ibrahimovic have turned up. Pastore, who PSG bought for $60 million in 2011, is hoping to be in Argentina’s squad for the 2014 World Cup and must be playing regularly. Both Arsenal and Liverpool are lurking, could he be the final piece in the jigsaw?

Price: $25-30 million

12. Yohan Cabaye

The leader of Newcastle’s French revolution seemed to be on his way out of St. James’ Park this summer when he walked out of training and his teammates. But after being disciplined by the club he’s stuck around and Cabaye has produced some stunning displays and added important goals for the Magpies. Arsene Wenger is a long-term suitor, will Cabaye move to the Emirates or possibly Manchester United?

Price: $25-30 million

13. Nemanja Matic

Chelsea let this man leave in Stamford Bridge for Benfica in the move that brought David Luiz in the opposite direction, but the deep-lying Serbian playmaker Matic has turned into a star. Pulling the strings for Benfica, his eye for a pass and ability to break up play see him sought after in the window. Both Chelsea and Manchester United are again vying for his services.

Price: $32-35 milion

14. Koke

Atletico Madrid have a whole host of stars, but 21-year-old Koke is perhaps their prized possession. He has a release clause in his contract according to many reports, which is much disputed, and varies considerably. But what isn’t in doubt is his talents on the pitch as the playmaker is an assist king and pops up just behind the forwards in devastating fashion.

Price: $30-60 million

15. Shinji Kagawa

Just what is going on with the Japanese international at United? With the Red Devils looking for more creative midfielder across Europe, it seems as though Kagawa’s time is up at Old Trafford. He hasn’t done much wrong during his time in English soccer but it seems like a move back to the Bundesliga could be in the cards.

Price: $20-25 million

16. Dimitar Berbatov

The supremely skillful yet slightly erratic Bulgarian forward could be a bargain for someone in the window, as Fulham are sitting perilously close to the relegation zone in the Premier League. Berbatov, 32, has shown his class with Manchester United and Tottenham in the past, and it seems as though Arsenal may pounce to snap him up for next to nothing to bolster their attack.

Price: $4-5 million

17. Mohammed Salah

The young Egyptian winger is another of Basel’s star performers and he’s highly-touted to go right to the top. Salah, 21, is comfortable on either wing and tore Chelsea apart in the Champions League earlier this campaign, plus former Egyptian and USMNT head coach Bob Bradley is a massive fan. Liverpool are said to be watching him, alongside many of Europe’s elite.

Price: $15-18 million

18. Kevin De Bruyne

It hasn’t quite happened for the Belgian winger at Chelsea this season, after playing several times at the start of the year he’s hardly featured of late. Constant questions about De Bruyne’s absence has irked Mourinho and he’s ready to ship the powerful winger out of Stamford Bridge. Wolfsburg want to buy him, while Atletico Madrid are interested in a loan deal.

Price: $37 million

19. Thomas Ince

The son of former Manchester United, Inter Milan and England midfielder Paul Ince, Thomas has set the Championship alight with some dazzling wing play this season. Ince, 21, is ready to play in the Premier League after spending his entire career in the lower divisions initially on loan from his old club Liverpool. The England U-21 winger has the desire to succeed in the PL.

Price: $8-12 millionsource: AP

20. Eliaquim Mangala

Another star from FC Porto, Mangala was rumored to be heading to England in the summer but he opted to stay at Porto. At just 22 he’s already carved a name for himself as one of the most talented central defenders in Europe, that’s probably why Chelsea Manchester City and Barcelona are chasing him. He has pace, strength and a cool head, everything you need from a central defender.

Price: $36-40 million

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Edwards Interesting Wolves
twtd.co.uk

Town skipper Carlos Edwards is reportedly a loan target of League One title challengers Wolves.

The 35-year-old, who previously spent time on loan at Molineux in the 2008/09 season when a Sunderland player, made only his eighth start of the campaign in Saturday’s 1-1 FA Cup draw with Preston.

The Trinidad and Tobago international is out of contract at the end of the season and given his lack of involvement seems unlikely to be offered new terms.

Edwards joined the club in the summer of 2009 when the Blues, then managed by his former Black Cats boss Roy Keane, paid the Wearsiders a fee of £1.35 million.
