Sorry about the delay, guys, had a hectic Easter Bank Holiday weekend and still recovering! :)
Please click link below to view some pics taken by my friend Otis who runs the TrinisInLondon.com website.

http://www.trinisinlondon.com/Warrior_Nation_Fete/index.html

In summary for now the Warrior Nation Nite went smoothly, all who attended thoroughly enjoyed the night, the Steadfast TV crew (filming for ITV) were pleased with footage, interviews and performances they got for their show and the event will be featured as planned on ITV1's "Fans United" on Wednesday 17th May 2006 at midnight (GMT).

I will elaborate a bit more in event write-up, I'm doing between now & tomorrow.

Got to dash

Warrior Nation Nite @ Base Bar event report!
« Reply #9 on: April 19, 2006, 10:27:44 AM »
Well folks, those pics only gives us part of the story of how well the Warrior nation Nite went. Our friend Otis (soon to become a Warrior Nation member, he’s in glasses on left in this picture, click link http://www.trinisinlondon.com/Warrior_Nation_Fete/slides/PICT0197.html) who runs the TrinisInLondon.com website was busy most of the night chatting up gyal so was unable to capture every aspect of the night. We also await some pics from FLi who was there and snapping away so hopefully he was able to capture other aspects of the night. Jay(the mechanic) was also in attendance and was most helpful to me in collecting some new flyers that I was unable to collect before the event due to time constraints so many thanks to him as we were able to hand the new flyers out before the event was over. SMI (another Warrior Nation member and regular poster here) was in the house too! SMI did fly catch you on camera? Maybe FLi can post a picture of you at the event if he took one as proof that you were there. FLi where are yuh pics man? Yuh sticking!!  ;D

For those who asked, the venue where the event took place is called the Base Bar, 33 Camberwell Road SE5 (in South-East London) and has a capacity of 150. As folks hear we go be on ITV and it was the start of the Easter bank holiday weekend (most didn't have to work the next day) well is like they now had excuse to party and come out to gallery deyself, if yuh see dem!
This Represent/Warrior Nation Nite was advertised to be on from 8pm till 2am but we ended-up going till bout 3:30am as the place was still packed till that time and folks didn’t seem to want to go home. I myself arrived just before 8pm and folks dressed up in their T&T colours and waving their flags were already inside, nice one... that's exactly what we wanted most of them doing so that the night will look good on TV once the Steadfast TV(ITV) cameras start rolling. I quickly got the soca music flowing and before I could turn around the Steadfast TV camera crew arrived and were setting up. Luckily I got the big Warrior Nation Banner up on the wall from the night before and the venue was all set for the cameras! The Steadfast TV camera crew’s aim was to capture the night as it developed and they asked me if I could give them an intro-interview of how the night is set to proceed and I happily obliged saying words to the effect:-

This is a night featuring the fans of the T&T Soca Warriors aka the Warrior Nation and will give ITV viewers a taster of how passionate we T&T supporters are about our team and how we plan to support them in Germany and to party and create a carnival like atmosphere in and outside the football stadiums at our three 1st Round matches whether we win, lose or draw. (Truetrini this is where I was hoping you coulda help out as you could real talk for camera!)
The night will also feature live soca artists who have recently penned and recorded songs in tribute to our team the Soca Warriors and we should also have some Carnival dancers performing and at least one player from our World Cup bound Soca Warriors football team expected to pass thru.
Ladies dress in Red/T&T colours who arrive before 10pm get Free wine and we should be giving away a Warrior Nation kit to one of our lucky supporters/feters who will get free member to the Warrior Nation which will normally cost them ÂŁ15. It should be an action packed night!

Well folks so said and so done and the ITV crew were telling me before the end of the night that they were very impressed with how it all went based on what I had promised them:-
Their cameras captured the early birds dressed in Red arriving before 11pm and getting their FREE wine and immediately getting in the wine-ing mood! By 10:30pm the venue was already getting packed with Trinbagonians mostly clad in Red/T&T colours and even folks from the other islands and countries were clad in Red too to show their support!
Carnival and football DVDs were on show on the Big screen until 11pm keeping the early arrivals entertained apart from the infectious soca music.
The Carib in the bar was flowing and the Poison Carnival dancers had arrived by 10:30pm and were ready to strut their stuff for the cameras. The billed Soca artists Fakekou, Level Crew, Silvah and Soca Banton were all in the house by 11pm and ready to perform too to show their support for the Soca Warriors. The icing on the cake was the arrival of Soca Warrior right-winger Carlos Edwards around 11:15pm so you done know it was show time!

The Poison Carnival dancers were scheduled for some other gigs that evening and so asked to perform first which they did after we (the DJ’s) got the crowd jumping and waving for the cameras to the some of the latest 2006 soca tunes including the popular Soca Warrior anthems by Bunji & Maximus Dan “Warrior Anthem” & “Fighter”, respectively. I mainly took a backseat from the DJ decks and let my DJ team (DJ Bliss and DJ Apache) do most of the playing while I helped to coordinated the night so that everything ran as smoothly as possible. Most of the night my mobile phone was going with folks asking for directions on their way to the venue and asking if they can still get in and if the show for the cameras has already started. Once the show got going my input was mainly as MC to introduce the acts to the audience and camera crew. Another camera crew from Ben TV arrived just before the performances started and the night was bubbling with excitement. By 12:30pm we had to start refusing folks entry as the venue was packed to the limit…. Those who were late had to lime outside and wait for folks to leave to be allowed in which most of them did as the weather was warm on the outside.
The Poison girls dressed in bikini costumes strutted their stuff and I give them and Poison a big-up for the cameras much to the delight of their manager. Just before they ended their performance I asked Carlos Edwards to step forward into the dance-floor area (near the DJ box and asked the Poison girls to do a dance round him for the cameras. They obliged and Carlos was feeling like a King if yuh see d smile on his face! See Carlos in this pic having a good time http://www.trinisinlondon.com/Warrior_Nation_Fete/slides/PICT0258.html
Next up were the live soca artists:-
First up to perform was Level Crew who put on an energetic performance for the audience and cameras with their new Soca Warrior song. They were jointly introduced by myself and their manager Coco Payol who is a popular UK based Trini-storyteller in the mould of Paul Keens-Douglas. He regularly MCs at the London calypso tent every summer and I previously did that MCing job before Coco took over.
Next up we had Silvah along side Soca Banton (the UK Soca Monarch for 2005) also performing their Soca Warrior tune which also went down well with the crowd to loud cheers. Finally we had artist Fakekou (a nephew of the Baron) who performed his new rapso song “Kick De Ball” and we also featured his brand new music video for the song playing on the screen in the background while he performed. In my opinion Fakekou’s song has a lot of cross-over appeal and will go down well with ITV viewers who might be into the R&B, Hip-Hop, etc as it has that sort of international vibe.
After the performances we next did our Warrior Nation Kit raffle (kit provided by FLi) and gave away a membership kit to one of the lucky ravers in the venue.
In general I was told by almost everyone that it was a great night and audience, artists, etc were really looking forward to seeing themselves on TV showing their support for the Soca Warriors!
For the rest of the night while folks partied on I regularly announced that they can look out for the broadcast of this T&T fans i.e. Warrior Nation Nite on ITV1's 'Fans United' programme on Wed.17th May’06 at midnight. I also regularly plugged the benefits of joining the Warrior Nation and kept directing eyes towards the big Warrior Nation banner on the wall telling folks that we’ll be jumping behind that banner in Germany and at all our future T&T games if they become members.
I can tell you by the end of the night most folks who attended were anxious to become Warrior Nation members so I can say the night was definitely a success. Once this Warrior Nation Nite airs on ITV1 I just hope that FLi will have enough kits to supply the many UK based Soca Warriors supporters who will be interested in joining up!

That’s it, the summary of the Warrior Nation UK Fete Nite Part 1.

Next, look out for the Warrior Nation UK Sweat, FLi and the rest of the crew will keep you folks posted.

Sorry this post was so long but it could have been even longer if I tried to cover everthing that happened that night!

Socapro, happy, tired and still recovering from a great Easter/Warrior Nation weekend.

Over and out!

FLi, Jay & SMI allyuh could give allyuh feedback on how the Warrior Nation Nite went as well yuh know as I am sure I eh see or remember to post everything of interest that went on!  8)

HIGH COMMISSIONER HOSTS PLAYERS IN LONDON.
BY: Shaun Fuentes.

High Commissioner to London, Her Excellency Glenda Morean-Phillips showered praises on the Soca Warriors last Monday evening at a reception hosted by her at Belgrave Square.

Some of the Warriors sent apologies for their inability to attend the event but Dennis Lawrence, Brent Sancho, Carlos Edwards and Shaka Hislop did manage to fit the soiree into their busy schedules and were greeted and feted by Morean-Phillips on behalf of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.

In her address, Morean-Phillips praised the team, saying Trinidad and Tobago was justly proud of the work of our Soca Warriors in not only securing a place among the final 32 football teams that will play for the prestigious FIFA World Cup this June in Germany, but also for putting this country on the world map in a lasting way.

"You will understand the swelling of pride at the fact that so small a country could field a team of talented footballers that stand shoulder to shoulder with the already acknowledged greatest soccer players in the world and put them to the test," Morean-Phillips said, eliciting a swell of applause.

The affair was also addressed by High Commission press attache Ashton Ford, TTFF international relations consultant out of England, Mike Berry and LOC executive member, Terry Joseph, who represented committee chairman Jack Warner. European media, including BBC Caribbean's Debbie Ransome and Sky Sports' Roger Clarke spared no effort in capturing extensive interviews and comments from team members present.

Among those present, who were ushered by girls of Poison UK and  heard performances from former national calypso monarch Tobago Crusoe and fellow England-based bard De Alberto and heard pan music from double-seconds player Samuel du Bois (backed by Slovenian bassist Joseph Secnak) were British Member of Parliament Joan Walley, impressario Sonny Blacks, Trini journalists Simon Lee and Odeka O'Neil, diplomat Nina Baden-Semper, Reverend Pat Stephens and Miss T&T/UK Crystal Lougier. Guests were also treated to a wide array of Trini cuisine and beverages at the fete which went well into the night.
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

FLi, Jay & SMI allyuh could give allyuh feedback on how the Warrior Nation Nite went as well yuh know as I am sure I eh see or remember to post everything of interest that went on!  8)

Disclaimer: I'm not in any of those pictures  ;)

Any way, my version.

First of all, I thought it was going to be an 'official' Warrior Nation scene, not a warrior-nation-tacked-on-to-an-existing-session. That's a whole different vibe. Onward.

Get down there in my red/white/black, about 10ish, find my friends who looking vex vex because they didn't have anybody to gape, wait 20 minutes to get served by the  bar because the bartender chick eh look like she know how to mix a rum and coke, get vex with same bartender 5 mins later cause she eh wah give me no glass of ice ("you just want a glass of ice?" "yes" "no").

Music was decent, spent a lot of time avoiding this scary sweaty Nigerian who kept lifting women up and 'dancing' with them despite their protestations, slightly concerned because the filmmakers seemed to be shooting from the "oh look at how the natives behave" angle and thus encouraging general wildness and wassiness (see Nigerian, above).

By about midnight place was ram, stop drinking because i woulda cuss the bartender (if I coulda make it to the bar through the crowd, anyway), end up drinking coke for the rest of the evening because it was cheaper than water (madness), lime with the friends lil bit but most of them skate out early, noticed that Carlos have a real cool tattoo but questionable taste in entourages (and for allyuh who wanted to suggest the man was wilding it up, that's not true. He was real mellow and must be drink two carib for the whole night), continued my mission of hiding from cameras/nigerian fellah, wondered where some of these people come out from, start to get bored and then they announce that the first act was coming on.

Now, Level Crew and Coco P real talented, I've seen them perform lots of times. Level is seriously high energy, and the boys could real dance. So it was a damn shame that they had to perform without a stage in the middle of a ram ram session, with no space to move, and the people at the back coulda barely hear or see anything. Wasn't surprised that they cut their performance. Next up was Silvah and Banton. Their performance was better than the last time I saw them, but WHY it is soca 'artistes' feel women want to hear things like "the girl dem want Silvah to...(and variations along that anatomical theme)". That was definitely not on. Fakekou was aight, song was aight but he need to sort out his stage presence. Also, it seemed that he was the 'artist of the evening' but not sure it was the best idea to have his video/logo on the screen directly behind the other performers during their performances.

By two I was real tired and on the verge of cussing the Nigerian, so I hide out in by some chairs in a corner waiting for my other pardners. Leave there like three I think.

Lessons for future 'Warrior Nation' sessions: Is either about the WN, or it isn't. It gets confusing when is a 'warrior nation special event' at a 'represent your island' jam. I had a couple of people ask me if it's always a soca warriors thing, if this was a one off event in a random bar, etc etc. That's the kind of thing you want to avoid. Also, no one was giving out WN flyers, which is a shame because a lot of people left by 2.30 and the only flyers they had were from other promoters plugging their stuff. And it was hard to see the banner because it kept falling down and it had real people leaning on the wall it was on. Venue was definitely too small, and a sure fire way to piss off performers and their managers is to not make proper provisions for their performance.

Pro, I like the idea that you promoting the Warrior Nation and doing the raffle etc at the Represent events, but I think that more planning needs to go into anything that has the Warrior Nation name associated with it. If allyuh fellahs on the board saying that the place too small and the girls buss, how you think the people who was actually there woulda react? It was fun and the vibe was decent, but I think the Nation could do bigger and better in future.

Looking forward to the sweat.

I gone.

I gone.

Hi Stacy, thanks for your feedback regards how the event went through your eyes...its much appreciated.

Regards your comment about it being a Warrior-Nation-tacked-on-to-an-existing-session rather than an official Warrior Nation scene, that's quite valid. However lets keep in mind that right now we don't have that many UK based Warrior Nation members and we need to get as many new members as possible to help raise awareness of the Warrior nation and its goals.... so having this event as a tacked on event was an ideal opportunity to win over new members. Before the event I was trying to round-up as many signed-up Warrior Nation members as possible to attend the event in their WN t-shirts so we could establish a notable presence for the cameras etc and WN flyers could be handed out, etc. could be handed out. As it was there were only 4 of us that I am aware of that made the event to help hand out flyers etc. Also I must confess that the turn out was much higher than I anticipated. Basically the Steadfast TV folks asked me if I could produce a night where the Soca Warrior fans come together in party a atmosphere to demonstrate show they will be supporting the Soca Warriors in Germany and that's what I tried my best to provide.

When I saw you in that corner around 2am you should have told me someone was giving you a hard time. I believe the chap you are referring to is actually a Grenadian fellow called Eric. The reason I know this is because some other women also complained to me about his behaviour around 2:30am and they pointed him out. I had a stern word with him and told him if he doesn't calm down he will be put out by one of the bouncers. He is well known on the London soca scene (a member of the Mangrove Steelband) and has a reputation for getting carried away in parties after having a few drinks. Sorry to hear that he spoiled your night somewhat.

The bartender thing I will deal with....coke cheaper than water? I'll have to speak to them about that one! Maybe they ran out of ice or something because the place was much busier than they or myself anticipated, I'll check up on that one too.

Yes artist did give us feedback on lack of performance room but some of them had performed at Base Bar before and were happy with venue....guess none of us anticipate the crowd. Maybe we should of started the performances an hour earlier when there was more room in the venue rather than at 12pm as scheduled? But definitely the venue turned out to be too small for the crowd.

Anyway many thanks for your feedback and note for the next Warrior Nation Fete I try to organise I want you as my deputy as I obviously need your help and can only do so much!

Responses in-line.

Hi Stacy, thanks for your feedback regards how the event went through your eyes...its much appreciated.

no scene. Just my input as a professional limer

Regards your comment about it being a Warrior-Nation-tacked-on-to-an-existing-session rather than an official Warrior Nation scene, that's quite valid. I don't disagree that at this point the WN UK base is quite small and needs development. That said, to an extent it is still an either/or. The emails etc that were going around did not make it clear that it wasn't a strictly WN event. So when people got there, there was understandably a bit of confusion. I've been involved in joint events/promotions in the past, and the key thing is to be very clear about what you're doing, and why. The other thing is that if you confine WN 'awareness raising' to parties then you're missing a large chunk of your market. I know alot of Trinis up here who don't fete - and if they do they only dealing with PUK or Busspepper. Need also to think about the university crowd, and the -ahem- 'older generations'.

I dealt with Eric, he was actually rather polite. He took the chain up about one of my liming pardners being the boyfriend, and subsequently left me alone. Wasn't him, doh study it.

I doubt they ran out of ice. It was at the very beginning of the night.

Earlier start - possibly. Bigger/better venue - definitely.

Are you the main/only organiser for the WN fetes then? In any event, I'm willing to help out the WN with any events from the 8th of June. Late, but I have to graduate.
