Carlos John surrendered to police at 10:45 AM. He was charged in connection with the London bank account issue. It is alleged that he made a corrupt payment of £25,000 to Basdeo and Omar Panday on Christmas Eve 1998. He is on $750,000 bail. Panday was arrested and charges were read to him, but those charges have not yet been made public.

Basdeo Panday, Carlos John and Ishwar Galbaransingh are charged with corruption.

Former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday, former government minister Carlos John and businessman Ishwar Galbaransingh all appeared before a Port of Spain magistrate today charged with corruption.

The charges stem from the Piarco Airport Development project.

They were granted bail in the sum of 750 thousand dollars each.

Today both Mr. Panday and Mr. John surrendered themselves to police after warrants were allegedly issued for their arrest in connection with the now infamous London bank account.

We are told Mr. John surrendered to police around 10:45 this morning.

He was charged with providing a corrupt payment of 25 thousand pounds to Basdeo Panday and his wife Omah Panday on Christmas eve of 1998.

He appeared before Magistrate Ejenny Espinot in the Port of Spain Magistrates’ Court.

Officials of the Anti Corruption Bureau have confirmed that Mr. Panday was brought before the said magistrate and charged with receiving the funds.

We are also told that businessman Ishwar Galbaransingh has also surrendered to police and is currently being processed.

He is also expected to appear before the courts shortly.

Also we are hearing that a warrant has also been issued for Mr. Panday’s wife Omah Panday in connection with the same issue.

Jack saves Oma from jail
« Reply #6 on: June 03, 2005, 06:14:14 AM »
By Richard Charan (Trinidad Express)

Oma Panday, wife of Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday, was headed for jail on Tuesday night until the 11th hour intervention of Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) vice-president Jack Warner.

Warner raised the bail money after calling an emergency meeting of his company. A resolution was passed by the company's board of directors allowing for the company's assets to be used as surety to stand bail for the wife of former prime minister Basdeo Panday.

It was Warner and Roy Augustus, former junior education minister in the UNC government , who turned up at the Port of Spain Magistrates' Court late on Tuesday with two deeds worth $400,000 each.

The Daily Express made several attempts to contact Warner yesterday, but his secretary said he was tied up in meetings.

At the UNC's public meeting in Gasparillo on Wednesday night, Warner said: "I am proud to have been her bailor and, Mrs Panday, I tell you tonight, if you have to get bail tomorrow again, I will do it again tomorrow."

Opposition Chief Whip Ganga Singh told party faithfuls at the meeting that one of the properties used to post bail was located at 26 Dundonald Street, Port of Spain.

Ganga claimed it was "the same property where (former Prime Minister) Eric Williams was born. By his birthright, Eric Williams has become a UNC".

Mrs Panday visited her husband at the Maximum Security Prison yesterday, where he is being kept in the top security section, in the same cell block where his former super minister Dhanraj Singh was housed during his imprisonment on a murder charge.

The only other prisoner in the building is contract killer Shawn Parris.

Panday bows out as MP after 34 years

Ok,I know we have a election thread, but I felt this story was big enough.historic enough to command its own thread.

Panday bows out as MP after 34 years

Richard Charan Keino Swamber

Basdeo Panday chose to end his career as an elected politician yesterday - never showing up to file nomination papers to contest the Couva North seat he has owned for 34 years. He was the only ’dissident’ Member of Parliament not to seeking re-election.

His daughter, Oropouche West MP Mickela Panday, brother Princes Town North MP Subhas Panday and political allies Kelvin Ramnath, Dr Hamza Rafeeq and Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj all showed up at Rienzi Complex, Couva, to give themselves a chance.

Panday could not be contacted by phone last night.

When Panday, 77, met with other loyalists at Ramnath’s Couva South office last week, he was the only one not to commit to seeking nomination. Had he done it, Panday’s political future would have been in the hands of the Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who heads the screening committee that would have review his job in Couva North and his political career of 43 years.

Panday and Maharaj fought and lost to Persad-Bissessar in the party internal election in January, and

Panday had to relinquish the Opposition Leader post when Persad-Bissessar secured support from MPs, including some former Panday loyalists.

Panday’s exit was confirmed by Deputy Political Leader and former Panday partisan Dr Roodal Moonilal, who made no mention of Panday during his speech at last night’s UNC meeting in Marabella.

At least two other people filed nomination papers for Couva North before the 4 p.m. deadline yesterday - former Panday press officer Sunil Ramjitsingh, and deputy Political leader of the UNC, Suruj Rambachan.

Ramjitsingh criticised Panday’s 34-year-tenure as Couva North MP, and said he had the endorsement of more than a thousand people from the electoral district. Rambachan’s nomination papers were submitted by former Chairman of the Couva North constituency executive Orlando Nagessar.

Nagessar said of Panday’s failure to offer himself as a nominee, ’I doubt very much he would do this.

But this is not the end. After election there is still life. I think he has a role to play. This is a senior statesman and it is a pity it had to come to this.’

I am no Panday fan, but I feel this should not have gone this way. He had the opportunity to go out on his own terms. This looks like he finally come to terms with defeat.

I suppose for the UNC this way is better than him stepping away under different circumstances. There is less of a chance that he could split party support if he's not still active politically as an MP.

Sunil Ramjitsingh, a 33-year-old former print and broadcast journalist, and a media, research and communications specialist attached to the Chaguanas West Constituency, submitted his documents to the UNC Secretariat at Rienzi Complex this morning. His package contained the standard nomination form, a three-year development plan for the constituency, a campaign plan and endorsements from over 1,270 constituents collected over the weekend.

Panday did not have to leave this way but now he has to leave with shame because of his stubborness, ignorance and bitterness..and I believe most of the country would not feel sorry for him at all
