Walcott possibly playing v Belarus Thursday?
« on: May 23, 2006, 03:42:07 PM »
Walcott may be playing with the England B team against Belarus Thursday.

Maybe we'll get a chance to see him play. And Sven will get a chance, too.  ;D

Owen, Walcott to Face Belarus in Exhibition: Roundup (Update1)
(Bloomberg)

May 22

Michael Owen and Theo Walcott will face Belarus in an exhibition soccer game in three days as the squad continues to wait on the fitness of fellow striker Wayne Rooney.

``Maybe not from the beginning, but you will see'' Walcott in the match at Reading, England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson told reporters today.

The 17-year-old Walcott, a surprise inclusion in the World Cup squad, has yet to make his Premiership debut for Arsenal after it agreed to pay Southampton as much as 12 million pounds ($22.6 million) for him in January. Owen, who has made one appearance for Newcastle since breaking his foot on Dec. 31, will also play after training with the squad in Portugal last week.

``Owen is hungry to play football,'' Eriksson said. ``He was on fire. It should be good for him if he could play 90 minutes.''

Eriksson said he'll know more about Rooney's chances of playing in the four-yearly tournament that starts June 9 in Germany after the Manchester United striker undergoes further tests on his broken foot in three days.

Rooney, who was injured against Chelsea on April 29, will recover in time for England's opener against Paraguay on June 10, today's Sun newspaper reported.

`Very Well'

``He is working very well,'' Eriksson said. ``We are in contact with him and the doctors. I always, more with the heart than the head, said that he will play in the World Cup.''

Iain Dowie left Crystal Palace by mutual consent after failing to coach the team back to the Premiership, the club said on its Web site. The 41-year-old took over at the south London team in December 2003 and led the Eagles to promotion that same season.

Palace was relegated from the top division last year and failed to advance from the Championship this campaign, being beaten by Watford in the playoffs. Dowie, a former Northern Ireland international, has been linked with Middlesbrough and Charlton, both without managers.

Palace said it turned down an 8 million-pound bid from Bolton for England striker Andy Johnson, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported on its Web site.

Bolton put in the highest bid for the 25-year-old, the Web site said, adding that Everton and Wigan are also interested. Johnson is among standby players for the World Cup.

Fenerbahce said it's not close to signing Arsenal and England defender Sol Campbell after U.K. newspapers said the 31- year-old was the subject of an 8 million-pound bid from the Turkish club.

``Rumors we have agreed all terms with Sol Campbell are untrue,'' Fenerbahce said in a statement. ``Claims he will arrive to sign in the coming days do not reflect the truth.''
