Confident T&T head for Mexico

NATIONAL football team manager Bruce Aanensen said Saturday’s 2006 World Cup qualifier at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, saw the team performing better than in recent times.

He suggested that the direction of Warriors coach, Leo Beenhakkar, and his assistants, Wim Rijsbergen and Theo De Jong, all of the Netherlands, had begun to show in the players’ attitude on the field.

Aanensen (speaking a day after the Warriors’ 2-0 triumph over Panama) pointed to “significantly greater” ball possession, maintained by intelligent passing and strong support play and a renewed desire to win the ball, as the defining factors in T&T’s win.

Aanensen was appointed manager of the national team following a drastic change in the team’s administration on April 1.

The changes saw Bertille St Clair being sacked as coach of the team.

Aanensen said the players have become more of a unit, one that is more confident, one playing a series of short passes—a welcome change from the often unproductive long ball strategy utilised in the past.

Aside from Beenhakkar, English-born Christopher Birchall,20, was also making his full international debut, after friendlies with the team in the build-up to the match.

Aanensen was of the view that Birchall made a considerable difference in the midfield with his deft first touch, keen vision and ability to read the game, his fighting spirit and his effectiveness in dead ball situations.

The manager believes that the youngster is an asset to team.

The team’s next stop on the “Road to Germany” is Wednesday’s away match to CONCACAF qualifying stage three group leaders Mexico, in Monterrey.

The last time T&T beat Mexico was a 1-0 piping in July 2000, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. On that occasion, present captain Dwight Yorke set up then captain, Russell Latapy’s goal scored from 25 metres.

Mexico beat T&T 3-0 and 3-1 in round two of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. But at a post-match press conference following his team’s emphatic win, both Beenhakkar and Aanensen say that the task ahead is not an easy one. The manager said “We will do our best to come back with a point.”

The team was out on the Hasely Crawford Stadium pitch for a light recovery session on Sunday morning.

“T&T needed something like this to happen and its definitely put us back in the groove” T&T captain Dwight Yorke said.

“The result speaks for itself. The pressure was on because we all know how important it was to get a result.

“The management staff deserve a lot of credit as well. They have done a fantastic job in such short space of time.”

The Warriors captain also expressed his belief that they could hold their own on the road once they maintained their form and positive approach

“The coach knows what he’s doing” Stern John said. “He also gave me the confidence to go out and do it. When everyone else was talking about taking me off”.

Goalkeeper Daurance Williams replaces Clayton Ince, after the Crewe Alexandra custodian informed management that he will sit out the Mexico match.

based on a fifaworldcup.com article, the azteca is 7200 ft above sea level... so the azteca is much higher up
