T&T sprinter Marc Burns was unlucky not to capture the 100 metres title at Saturday’s Galatletica Banamex Sonora 2005 in Monterrey, Mexico.

He was edged on the line by American JJ Johnson.

Both Burns and Johnson hit the tape in 10.18 seconds, leaving the race to be decided by photo-finish evidence.

Johnson was eventually adjudged the winner.

Burns’ compatriot Darrel Brown, who came into the meet as the defending 100m champion, placed third in 10.31 seconds.

He was followed by Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles (10.32) and world record holder in the straight sprint Tim Montgomery of the USA, fifth (10.43).

In the feature event, the women’s 400m Olympic gold medallist Tonique Williams-Darlin of the Bahamas got the better of hometown girl Ana Guevara (50.05) Williams-Darlin’s won in 49.85 seconds.

At the Victoria International Track Classic in Canada on Friday, former national sprint double champion Jacey Harper was the class of the field, winning both the 100 and 200m.

In the 1000, he crossed the line in 10.47 seconds, beating Liberia’s Abraham Morlu (10.58) and American Kevin Devine (10.62).

He clocked 21.06 in the half-lap.
