remember I had wrote about Teams and Boogie Teams in WC competition.
Check this one out

There's a strange pattern involving the European winners of this match and their subsequent performance in qualifying for the European Championships -- the next big tournament for them after the World Cup. Let me illustrate:

World Cup Spain 1982 -- third place: Poland -- failed to qualify for Euro Champs in France 1984

World Cup Mexico 1986 -- third place: France -- failed to qualify for Euro Champs in Germany 1988

World Cup Italy 1990 -- third place: Italy -- failed to qualify for Euro Champs in Sweden 1992

World Cup USA 1994 -- third place: Sweden -- failed to qualify for Euro Champs in England 1996

World Cup France 1998 -- third place: Croatia -- failed to qualify for Euro Champs in Belgium/Holland 2000

World Cup Japan/Korea 2002 -- third place: Turkey -- failed to qualify for Euro Champs in Portugal 2004

What that saying is if yuh want to qualify for de Euro finals, doh come 3rd in the WC .....daiz all   ;D

I told Touches the day before the tournament started about a similar stat.

1986 France 3rd - Didn't qualify for 1990
1990 England 4th - Didn't qualify for 1994
1994 Sweden 3rd - Didn't qualify for 1998
1998 Holland 4th - Didn't qualify for 2002
2002 Turkey 3rd - Didn't qualify for 2006

It would seem that Portugal is not going to qualify for 2010 in South Africa.

Well Ireland without Keane and Czech without Nedved are a lot weaker than with. It'll be interesting to see if they blood any young attacking midfielders into the Squads.

I don't know much about Slovakia, but they may be on the up and up...After all they were in the WCQ playoffs this time around

Speaking of Twilight zone...Italy was always going to win this World Cup.

WC1970- Italy lose the final to Brazil...12 years later
WC1982- Italy win the final over Germany...12 years later
WC1994- Italy lose the final to Brazil...12 years later
WC2006 - Italy win the final over France....

Looks like Italy is not going to make it to another WC final game until 2018...and they will lose...probably to Brazil

The last time we did not qualify was 1968. But the last time we were 3rd in the WC (1970) we went 1st place in the Euro Champs (1972). As you said : only time will tell  ;)

the 3rd place thing could have some logic behind it. in many cases, them teams went above what many thought they were capable of and placed 3rd e.g. poland 82, turkey 04, germany 06. maybe they burn out on that by the time euro q's come around.
