Wilfred" Spongy" Benjamin Joins Marist College
« on: August 06, 2006, 07:40:25 PM »
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-Marist head men's basketball coach Matt Brady announced Wednesday that 6'7 forward Wilfred "Spongy" Benjamin and 6'1 guard Dejuan Goodwin will be part of this year's incoming recruiting class.

"We're obviously excited to have Dejuan in our program," said head coach Matt Brady. "He comes from a winning program that has been tremendously successful, due in large part to the fine coaching he has received at Mt. St. Joseph's. In addition to being a versatile backcourt player, Dejuan is also a high-level perimeter defender."

Goodwin, a native of Baltimore, Md., led Mt. St. Joseph's to a 38-1 overall record as a senior and a final ranking of eighth nationally in the USA Today poll. Under Goodwin's direction, the Gaels won the Baltimore Catholic Championship and the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association Championship, while earning MVP honors of the prestigious Gonzaga Classic. Goodwin earned All-Baltimore Catholic league and All-City honors while racking up 12.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and two steals per game.

"Wilfred comes to us after two extremely successful seasons in junior college," Brady said. "His athletic ability and size are what we needed in our program to continue to compete at the highest level."

Benjamin, a native of Trinidad, comes to Marist from Williston State College in Williston, North Dakota. Benjamin powered the Tetons to a 22-12 record this season and a regional championship win over North Dakota State College of Science on their way to the NJCAA National Tournament, while averaging 12.3 points, 9.6 rebounds and 59.3 percent shooting from the field.
"Both of these young guys are wonderful additions, not only to our basketball program, but to the entire college campus and community as well," Brady said.
Marist went 19-10 during the 2005-06 campaign and will feature rising senior Jared Jordan, the nation's leader in assists last season at 8.5 per contest.
