Trinidad and Tobago Men's Beach Soccer Team in Paraguay for training camp
TTFA Communnications

Trinidad and Tobago’s Men Beach Soccer team is currently in Paraguay for a two-week residential training camp ahead of the 2021 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship in Costa Rica.

A 17-man squad arrived in Asuncion on Saturday and is based at the Olympic Hotel. The team under head coach Ramiro Amarelle played its first training match against the Paraguay Beach Soccer national team on Tuesday, going down 7-2 to the hosts at the Estadio Mundialista Los Pynandi, the venue for the 2019 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.

T&T's goals were scored by Omni Baird and Dominic McDougall. The hosts had items from Carlos Valentín Benítez (3), Carlos Carballo (2), Sergio González and Yoao Rolón. Amarelle described the first encounter as challenging but valuable to the team’s preparations.

“The first match was good for us in terms of experience. It was a first international game for some of our younger players who never played at this level before,” Amarelle told TTFA Media.

“Obviously Paraguay has a higher level than us which is okay because these are the teams we want to play and it helps immensely in getting our team to be prepared for the harder challenges. They were a World Cup host and some of their players have the experience of playing in a World Cup. The gap is not too big but obviously they have more quality and are better at making decisions and executing. We are working on these aspects of our game.

“We made some mistakes which we will work on in training and continue growing and improving on our performances in the next five matches here in Paraguay,” Amarelle added.

Both teams will meet again on Thursday followed by further matches against the Paraguay National Team on May 8th, 10th, 11th and 13th.

Prior to the start of the camp, Amarelle said the period in the South American country would go a long way in preparing T&T for the upcoming Concacaf Championship which they begin against Costa Rica on May 17th in Alajuela.

“This is a great opportunity for us to be in a camp situation in foreign territory before the competition. There are a lot of aspects of a training camp that are needed and it is good that we will get to experience the environment of a venue that hosted the 2019 World Cup. It’s a big opportunity for the players,” said Amarelle, who was joined in Paraguay by fellow Assistant Coach Jaime Paz of Spain.

“The games are also very important for us as it gives us a chance to measure ourselves against an international opponent and to play these games before the competition is absolutely necessary and will boost our preparations. To everyone who played a part in getting this training camp arranged we say a huge thank you,” he added.

The TTFA wishes to acknowledge the role played by the Beach Soccer Association of Trinidad and Tobago (BSATT) in securing the training camp in Paraguay with related expenses for travel and accommodation handled by BSATT. The BSATT must also be credited for providing resources to ensure that coach Amarelle and his staff were well taken care of while in Trinidad.

The 2021 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship will be the ninth edition.of the tournament will take place at the Sports Complex Fedefutbol-Plycem in Costa Rica between 17–23 May 2021.

The championship also acts as the qualification tournament for CONCACAF teams to the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Russia with the top two teams qualifying.

T&T opens against Costa Rica on May 17, then take on United States on May 18th and Turks and Caicos Islands a day later.

T&T beach soccer coach pleased with team’s growth.
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday).

RAMIRO Amarelle, coach of the Trinidad and Tobago beach soccer team, is pleased with the growth shown by the squad during their two-week residential training camp in Paraguay.

The T&T team are preparing for the 2021 Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship in Costa Rica, scheduled from May 17-23.

T&T were beaten in their three warm-up games against the hosts, at the Estadio Mundialista Los Pynandi, Luque, Gran Asuncion – 7-2 (on May 4), 5-2 (May 6) and 7-4 (Saturday – May 8.). Both T&T and Paraguay are set to play three more practice matches this week, on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

In an interview on the TT Football Association's (TTFA) You Tube page, after Saturday’s fixture, Amarelle said, “We are continuing to improve. We’ve reduced the amount of mistakes a lot, and we also did some good things on the offensive aspect.”

Amarelle, the former Spain captain and ex-China coach, said, “I think our performances (are) improving and growing. We have one week ahead (of the qualifiers) and we’ll try to continue on this way. I’m excited for the next couple of days.”

The 12-team 2021 Concacaf Beach Soccer Championships will take place at the Sports Complex Fedefutbol-Plycem, Alajuela, Costa Rica.

T&T, who were drawn in Group C, will face the hosts on May 17, United States (May 18) and Turks and Caicos Islands (May 19).

The quarter-finals are set for May 21, with the semi-finals on May 22 and the third-place match, and final, on May 23.

The finalists will be guaranteed spots at the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Russia.

T&T goalkeeper Zane Coker also spoke about the progress the team have been making, ahead of the qualifiers.

“We haven’t played a match for the last 18 months, (since) the end of 2019,” said Coker. “If you want to look at it from that aspect, I think the team is building and coming together. We’ve been training for the past couple of months and we’re progressing dramatically.”

The T&T goalie continued, “It’s amazing to be here. Paraguay is fit, they have a full contingent and they’re not easing us up at all. This is something that I like and prefer with the South American teams. In Concacaf, we’re a little more laid-back. With this experience and exposure, it’s really good for us (ahead of) the World Cup qualifiers.”

Focussing on Saturday’s match, Coker said, “The score-line doesn’t say it all for me. Yes we lost but, here in Paraguay, it’s not about winning or losing, it’s about doing the simple things (correctly) and going to Costa Rica as strong as possible. About the game, I was really impressed.

“I think that the errors that we made are fixable ones,” he added. “The important thing is that we’re getting the opportunities (to score). It’s all about taking the opportunities.

“We’re a little more focused, a little more team-oriented. The brotherhood and cohesiveness within the camp in the last two days (were) amazing. I think we’ll build from strength to strength, going into the qualifiers.”

Paraguay win fourth straight beach soccer warm-up against Trinidad and Tobago
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday)

PARAGUAY notched their fourth straight victory over T&T on Monday, in their beach soccer warm-up match, at the Estadio Mundialista Los Pynandi, Luque, Gran Asuncion.

The hosts prevailed 3-2, but T&T were rewarded with an own goal, and a strike from Omri Baird.

The T&T team are in Paraguay for a two-week long training camp, ahead of the 2021 Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship in Costa Rica, scheduled from May 17-23.

T&T were beaten in their previous three warm-up games against the hosts – 7-2 (on May 4), 5-2 (May 6) and 7-4 (Saturday – May 8). Both T&T and Paraguay are set to play twice this week, on Tuesday and Thursday.

In an interview on the T&T Football Association (TTFA) Facebook page, T&T captain Ryan Augustine said, “The opportunity to play and train in Paraguay will be critical for us. It’s the first time we’re getting this preparation, at this standard. The only other time we got something this close was in 2017.”

He continued, “Being able to play against a team that is eighth in the world, we know that in Concacaf we don’t have any team that is close to their level or their intensity. The opportunity to play Paraguay is going to be pivotal for us this time.

“They are also preparing for their qualifiers, in CONMEBOL. I’m really looking forward to our chances in the qualifiers.”

Coach names 12-man squad for Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship
By Ian Prescott (T&T Express)

RAMIRO AMARELLE says that Trinidad and Tobago is ready for next week’s CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship.

T&T are in a very tough Group C and begin their campaign against hosts Costa Rica on Monday, before meeting the USA and then Turks and Caicos Islands. The two finalists in the 11-team competition will qualify for the 2021 Beach Soccer Championships.

“I am excited for the competition,” stated Amarelle. “We are ready to try to achieve our dream.”

Amarelle also believes that his team has come along greatly during a two-week camp and six-match pre-series away to world-ranked number nine Paraguay, a team preparing for the South American Championships.

“We have been working very hard during the last two months,” added Amarelle. “Also these 15 days in Paraguay will help us a lot to improve out level, increase our competitive level.”

Amarelle’s comments came yesterday after naming a very experienced final 12-man squad, leaving out goalkeepers Levi Fernandez and David Floyd, forwards Immanuel Russell and Mathew Brown, and defender Tevyn Gill.

The former Barcelona and Spain beach soccer player commended the hard work by all members of the 17-man squad on the Paraguay tour and said it was difficult to leave out five players. Those omitted will remain with the team for the CONCACAF Championship, but will not participate in the tournament.

“For us today is not a happy day,” Amarelle said. “We are a family. Some of the players will not be part of the team inside, on the pitch, but they will remain with us out of the pitch supporting.”

T&T Squad

Goalkeepers: Jabari Gray, Zane Coker

Defenders: Jesse Bailey, Shallun Bobb, Omri Baird, Ryan Augustine

Midfielders: Joash Baird

Pivot: Lemuel Lyon, Kevon Woodley

Forwards: Hakeem King, Dominic McDougall, Akinola Gregory

Head Coach: Ramiro Amarelle
Assistant Coach: Jaime Paz

Ticos beach boys tame the Warriors 5-3.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

Despite two goals from captain Ryan Augustine from free-kicks, T&T’s Beach Soccer men went down 3-5 to host Costa Rica in their opening match in Group C of the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship in Alajuela, Costa Rica, on Monday.

The result means T&T will have to beat giants USA in their second match on Tuesday to have a chance of being one of two teams to progress from the group.

The hosts, spurred on by their handful of fans in the stands, always looked the more dangerous team from the start as the Trinbagonians struggled to offer any resistance. After some early attempts, the Ticos were rewarded with the opening goal a minute from the end of the first period of play, when Jonaiker Gamboa connected sweetly from a throw-in on the right side.

T&T goalkeeper Zane Coker, the star in the T&T goalpost when the two teams met in the quarterfinals of the tournament in 2015, could only watch on as Gamboa’s shot flew past him into the top right-hand corner of the net.

The goal gave the Ticos a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period of play and in the second, the Ticos went two-up from Christian Sanchez who unleashed a thunderous low drive that flew in before Coker could even see it. Coach Ramiro Amarelle immediately replaced Coker with Jabari Gray for the start of the third period where the Warriors came to life.

Captain Augustine pulled a goal back after the early moments, courtesy of a powerful low shot from a free-kick that beat the dive of the Costa Rican custodian to the right side. And a minute later Augustine it was again from event further out but this time his shot took a favourable bounce to go past the goalkeeper for a 2-2 scoreline.

The Trinbagonians, who were beaten 1-2 by the Costa Ricans almost six years ago, were now in line to avenge that defeat. But the home team then missed a golden opportunity to go 3-2 up when Sanchez picked out Josimar Downer from a right-side centre but with the goal at his mercy, the latter turned his header wide.

However, they were not to be denied as Sanchez got away from his marker from a tussle on the right side, and unleashed a blistering low drive that Coker could only parry into his own nets. Two minutes after the Ticos restored their two-goal advantage from another counter-attack on the left side. This time Gamboa centred for Greivin Pacheco to score, although it took him two attempts to do so.

Still trailing 2-4, the T&T men did not give up and were rewarded from a simple tap-in by Dominic Mc Dougall two minutes from the end, after Jesse Bailey pulled it back for him from the right side.

However, the Ticos would have the last say when Pacheco’s cross from the corner was connected nicely on the volley by Pablo Calvo to complete the win 5-3.

The Costa Ricans must now face the Turks and Caicos Islands for a chance to secure one of two spots to emerge from the group. If T&T upset the two-time winner of the tournament USA today, then they will face the Turks and Caicos on Wednesday to advance, but the task though seems a mountainous one.

US whip T&T 5-2 in Concacaf Beach Soccer
By Jelani Beckles (T&T Newsday)

THE T&T Beach Soccer team fell to a 5-2 defeat to the United States in their second Group C match of the 2021 Concacaf Beach Soccer Championships, at the Sports Complex Fedefutbol-Plycem, Alajuela, Costa Rica, on Tuesday.

T&T lost 5-3 to Costa Rica in their opening encounter on Monday.

T&T tried a new strategy against US from the opening match as T&T captain Ryan Augustine was the only starter remaining from the Costa Rica fixture.

In just the third minute of the match Nicholas Perera gave US the lead with a free kick. His shot was heading wide, but the ball took a friendly bounce and went into Jabari Gray’s net.

The US goalkeeper Christopher Toth then gave USA a 2-0 lead with a shot from distance in the fourth minute.

T&T created chances but failed to convert. With four minutes left in period one Augustine took a free kick inside the US' half but his shot went wide.

In the dying seconds of period one Tomas Canale headed home after his attempt came off the crossbar to make it 3-0.

T&T goalkeeper Zane Coker, who replaced Gray at the end of period one, needed attention twice in the early stages of period two after getting injured. Coker had to be replaced and Gray returned to the action.

Midway through the second period, Dominic McDougall missed two chances within seconds of each other. He first failed to convert a header which was followed by a close range shot.

Gabriel Silveira then gave US a 4-0 cushion with 17 seconds left in the second period when he converted a header.

The third and final period was the most fruitful for T&T.

Shortly after the third period kicked off T&T got on the board. Toth came out of his area to clear the ball, but failed to make contact and McDougall slotted home. Canale made it 5-1 in the sixth minute of the final period, before Akinola Gregory rounded off the scoring with a goal for TT seconds later.

TT will play Turks and Caicos in their final group game on Wednesday from 4.30 pm. The top two teams in each group will qualify for the knockout phase along with the two best third place teams.

The winners and runners-up will qualify for the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Russia.

Still alive as Trinidad and Tobago best Turks & Caicos to advance to ‘quarters’
By Ian Prescott (T&T Express)

AN AMATEURISH performance saw Trinidad and Tobago almost blow an early four-goal lead before desperately surviving for a 7-5 win over Turks and Caicos yesterday at the 2021 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship in Costa Rica.

Victory saw T&T’s ‘Beach Warriors’ secure a fourth consecutive trip to the quarter-finals phase. They now await a clash with either tournament favourites El Salvador or defending champions Mexico, on Saturday. T&T’s chances of beating either of those teams appear thin at best, given what they have produced so far.

Defending champions Mexico, Panama, USA, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala advanced to the quarter-finals as automatic qualifiers, along with Caribbean countries Trinidad & Tobago and Bahamas, both third-placed finishers in their respective groups.

T&T made a fast start, leading by four goals after the first quarter, but made hard work of holding off their rivals. T&T got two goals apiece from goalkeeper Jabari Gray (4th & 11th), defender Shallun Bobb (5th & 20th), and striker Douglas Mc Dougall (24th & 36th), while captain and defender Ryan Augustine (3rd) got the opening goal.

After completely dominating the first period, T&T stopped playing as a unit and descended into individual, amateurish play. They were outscored 3-2 in the second period, as the Turk & Caicos clawed back to 4-2 and later at 5-3, with a close-up goal from Alex Byran (16th) and a downward header from Ledsome Jerome (17th), while Herby Magny (24th) turned and hit a low shot past goalkeeper Zane Coker.

T&T head-coach Ramiro Amarelle rotated again, with goalkeeper Jabari Gray, Joash Baird, Omri Baird, Joel Lyons and Hakeem King getting the start, while Turks & Caicos kept the team which played the first two matches with one exception.

An explosive T&T saw captain Augustine score with his first touch when turning the ball off the outside of his foot. Keeper Gray doubled the advantage four minutes into the game with a volley straight from his goal area. A minute later, Shallun Bobb put in the first of a pair of close-up headers for 3-0 and Gray also got his second with a bouncing shot pass his opposite number, Pendieno Brooks, for 4-0, after dribbling up field, past an attacker.

Turk & Caicos continued to fight and were closer with two goals in the third-period. Magny’s header caught Gray off his line and he was also left defence-less by a low shot by Jeff Belijour with two minutes left. Desperately holding on, T&T got an insurance goal from McDougall to relieve the pressure and seal the victory.

Trinidad and Tobago face El Salvador for Beach Soccer semifinal spot
T&T Newsday Reports.

T&T BEACH Soccer players Dominic McDougall and Jabari Gray both know that the national team will have to produce their strongest performance of the 2021 Concacaf Beach Soccer Championships to upset El Salvador in the quarterfinals, on Friday.

T&T will play El Salvador at 4.30 pm (TT time) at the Sports Complex Fedefutbol-Plycem in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

T&T qualified for the quarterfinals after finishing third in Group C behind Costa Rica and USA.

In the opening round T&T lost 5-3 to Costa Rica on Monday, before falling 5-2 to USA on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, needing a win to qualify for the knock-out phase, T&T got past Turks and Caicos Islands 7-5. T&T just held on for the victory after comfortably leading 4-0. El Salvador ended the group phase with three wins in Group B with victories over Dominican Republic (15-1), Guatemala (7-1) and Bahamas (7-2).

Speaking to TT Football Association media, McDougall said T&T must deliver the goods to come away with a win.

“If we could get our best effort thus far and maybe come out victorious. If we could get it right and be in the right frame of mind and be positive in what we doing in the plays and all these nice little things we could possibly beat El Salvador. I am hoping and I am looking forward to victory,” McDougall said.

Giving his thoughts on the victory over Turks and Caicos, McDougall said TT could have been more convincing.

“It was both negative and positive. I think we started really well, but we were not able to manage the game in the manner in which I expected but still thankful for the victory.”

McDougall scored a brace against Turks and Caicos, but said the team’s performance is more important.

“It is always good to be on the headlines and score goals, but it is more a team effort and if T&T could go on the end of my goals I will be more happy than (seeing) McDougall.”

Goalkeeper Gray, who also netted twice versus Turks and Caicos, also felt T&T could have been more clinical in the final group match.

Gray said, “It was good. We did not manage (the game) for the entire 36 minutes but we learned valuable lessons and it was good to have the victory.”

On his performance, “That was a plus. I just went out there with a game plan which the coach (Ramiro Amarelle) implemented and just following it brought those two (goalscoring) opportunities and I was glad that I was able to take them and get confidence in myself going into the quarter-final.”

Gray said the training camp in Paraguay may prove beneficial heading into the match against El Salvador. The T&T players spent two weeks in Paraguay where they played the hosts in six practice matches.

“We have been through the motions in Paraguay playing against a quality team and this is no different. We have not shown what we can do as yet, but on Friday is a great opportunity to finally do it and finally do great things and make the country proud back at home.”

Conceding 5 goals against Turks & Caucus seemed unlikely. El Salvador must be encouraged.

Horrible start to the match!

One of the observations or takeaways from the beach soccer tournament, the futsal tournament and 11 v 11 football is that measured aggression seems to be lost on some T&T players. The opponents don't seem to foul with the serial or pathological tendency that our players display. When will we recognise the limits of physicality that isn't sprinkled with a dose of proper judgement?

Lemuel Lyon should be on the WC squad.

He was in the camp in Paraguay, but he was one of those who got cut from the final squad.

My mistake. Lemuel Lyons is on the squad.

I meant being Fenwick squad.

Why? Based on what? When last he even play in de Pro League? Plus de man go be 35 this month.

The 34 y/o McDougall has a mean turn. He's a year younger. Look like he could strike the ball well from any angle within 20 to meters of goal. And he has a passport!!! :)

T&T bow out CBSC after 9-2 loss to El Salvador.
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian).

T&T’s beach soccer men made their exit from the Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship (CBDC) on Friday after being hammered 9-2 by El Salvador in a quarterfinal encounter in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

The win came courtesy of hat-tricks from Ruben Batres and Valasquez Henriquez, and an overall commanding performance by the Central Americans.

The El Salvadorians, who went into the match as the leading scorers at the end of the group phase, wasted little time in taking the lead. Goalkeeper Eliodoro Portillo picked himself up after being fouled by Kevon Woodley earlier and fired a powerful grounder that lifted over the dive of Gray with only seconds gone.

The third minute had barely gone and El Salvadorians were two goals up. Darwin Ramirez’s long-range effort bounced awkwardly off the crossbar for Exon Perdomo to pounce on it. But the Trinbagonians pulled one back from a freekick by Woodley, picking himself up after being hacked down close to goal, and he beat Portillo in goal.

T&T trailed 1-2 at the end of the first period and conceded another goal early in the second, when Gray handled the ball outside his area and Batres opened his account with a fierce low drive that Gray had no chance of holding.

Batres would complete his hat-trick by scoring his team’s fifth and seventh goals, both of which came in the third period of play.

Henriquez on the otherhand scored all his goals in the third period, all of them coming from ferocious strikes. But despite their dominance however, there were moments of brilliance for the Trinbagonians, reminiscent of their abilities.

With the score at 3-1, Gray was put into the spotlight as the referee pointed instantly to the penalty spot when Urbina Hernandez was brought down inside the danger area. However Hernandez’s effort was pushed wide from the penalty spot.

The save lifted the Trinbagonians somewhat, until an own goal by Jesse Bailey gave the El Salvadorians a 4-1 advantage at the end of the second period, and dropped the heads of the men in all white.

The third session was a period of punishment for the battling T&T men. And despite a goal from Omari Baird, lifting the ball over an onrushing Portillo during the run of play that reduced the scoreline to 6-2, it was mainly the heroics of Batres and Palasquez that dominated the affair in that session.

The El Salvadorians will now be hoping to go all the way after finishing third in the last three championships.

Pandemic took toll on squad, says Trinidad and Tobago beach soccer captain Augustine
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday)

THE covid19 pandemic proved to be a huge challenge on the national beach soccer squad, according to team captain Ryan Augustine.

The team were eliminated in the quarter-final stage of the Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship, which took place last month in Costa Rica. The T&T team, under the guidance of Ramiro Amarelle, were trounced 9-2 by El Salvador, in the round of eight, on May 21.

During the group stage, T&T were beaten 5-3 by the hosts Costa Rica (May 17) and 5-2 by the United States (May 18), before they edged Turks and Caicos Islands 7-5 (May 19) to finish third in Group C.

During an interview last Thursday, Augustine acknowledged, “A couple years ago, we had a couple players, myself (included), who would have played outside of Trinidad, who would have played all year round. Now, none of us play full-time or even part-time per se. The pandemic had a bigger part to play I think, across the board. Most players were not very active. It definitely had a huge negative impact.”

The T&T captain continued, “The number of challenges we had to overcome – fitness alone, players sacrificing time after their jobs to come to training and having to go into a bubble. It’s definitely a bit stressful.”

The T&T beach soccer team had a two-week long camp in Paraguay before going to Costa Rica for the Concacaf Championship.

“The camp in Paraguay was great,” said Augustine. “The pandemic had a huge part to play in our transition to Costa Rica, because of issues with flights. The camp, in general, was very positive.”

On the flip side, Augustine said, “It was sad to see our performance in the tournament. Not using the pandemic as an excuse but a combination of a couple things led to us not really having a great showing, which was very unfortunate.” About the challenges, Augustine mentioned, “The pandemic, the stress that it had on the team. Everybody is dealing with the pandemic but it definitely took a toll on us.

“I think the disconnect for a lot of the team in competing year-round. Because we lack so much structure, and we don’t even have a league, the results, where we’re actually at shows.”

Augustine is eager to assist the future crop of T&T beach soccer players.

“I am motivated to stay involved and help in the progression of the sport, and supporting the younger ones coming up,” he said. “Where we’re at now is a big step from where we were when I had started. When I started, we didn’t have any experienced players to learn from. Now we have a pitch in Couva (next to the Ato Boldon Stadium), we have lights at the pitch, we have the Home of Football where we can stay in.

What did he learn most from the Concacaf campaign?

Augustine replied, “I think it brought the more brutal reality to the surface, of where we are, in football in general. It just reiterates the point that we have to do more.

“Without structure and a place for players to play, to develop and have that commitment to the game, no matter how talented you find Trinidadians (and Tobagonians) are, we are going to suffer. If we don’t do something sooner or later, we’re going to hit rock bottom. The only way to come out of that is to start from scratch.”
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.
