EPL Wrap up
« Reply #30 on: August 20, 2006, 08:02:38 PM »
Yeah ah know it already have ah "EPL Results" thread...but still, some observations on this weekend's EPL action:

Portsmouth 3 v Blackburn 0- Brad Friedel denies Kanu a hat trick in his Portsmouth debut...penalty shouldn't have been awarded in the first place...but good job by Kanu all the same.

Liverpool 1 v Sheffield United 1- Gerrard took a dive, contact was minimal at best (non-existent from what I saw)...this from a llongtime Liverpool supporter.

Fullham 1 v Man. United 5 - Saha, Rooney and Ronaldo played well, but Rooney looked to be in fine form being Johnny-on-the-spot on one goal, and executing a clinical one-time finish off a nice Ronaldo pass on the second.

Charlton 1 v West Ham 3 - Say what allyuh want about Zamora, but imagine him upfront with Stern John in Soca Warrior red.  He had to weak goals...but proved to be very opportunistic on both, good football sense on display.  Nice game by Marlon Harewood too...though it won't show up in the stat book.

Arsenal 1 v Aston Villa 1 - only memorable for Theo Walcott making the most of his run

Bolton 2 v Spurs 0 - Unfortunate result for Spurs, first goal should have been disallowed since it came as the result of an uncalled foul.  2nd was a 40-yard pond-skipper that Robinson (continuing his ordinary showing since the World Cup) should have done better with.

Chelsea 3 v Man. City 0 - Chelsea continues it's unbeaten streak at home, undefeated at Stamford Bridge in Morinho's two years there.  Good to see Terry getting right into goal-scoring form...albeit a month too late for us Englan fans.

Everton 2 v Watford 1 - Horrendous decision to award Watford a penalty when an attempted cross from the right edge of the penalty box was struck off the head of the defender...somehow the ref and his assistant saw a hand instead, costing Watford a point.

Newcastle 2 v Wigan 1 - Only thing worth mentioning is that Newcastle misses Michael Owen...and will miss Alan Shearer.

Reading 3 v Middlesborough 2 - Ordinary goalkeeping by former MLS standout Marcus Hahnemann almost cost Reading in their debut in the Premiership...but good composure and good play particularly by Seol Kyi-Hyeon to win Reading a point.

Conclusions:

1. Kanu was a boss signing for Portsmouth. One of the most gifted players out of Africa and survived heart problems to continue to rip up EPL.

2. Damn right Gerrard dive.

3. 4k Zamora.

4. Come on Arsenal, step the game up.

5. Chelsea played real ball culminating in a sweet diving header from Drogba. Confirmed the fact that they are a major force to be reckoned wit in defending their title. And Shevchenko hungry for 1st EPL goal.

6. Hard luck fuh Watford. If Carlos had sign he woulda share beat down the right, leave a man fuh dead, send in a sweet cross for a man to head in, giving Watford their first EPL point.

7. Middlesbrough choke bad. And their coach have de England job. All credit to newly-promoted Reading, that Korean midfielder is a hardworker and doh stop running. He alone deserve dat win.

T&T welcomes back...the King

2. Damn right Gerrard dive.

I shame tuh admit it, but replays doh lie...I understand that it's part ah de game, but ah really doh have no respect for it.

3. 4k Zamora.

7. Middlesbrough choke bad. And their coach have de England job. All credit to newly-promoted Reading, that Korean midfielder is a hardworker and doh stop running. He alone deserve dat win.

#9. Merge it fuh dat mods  ;D

#10. Gerrard didn't dive..he merely lost his balance..he didn't even appeal for a penalty as some people claim.

#11. Ameobi could handle it this season fuh Newcastle.

#12. That going to be Kanu only good game this season.

#13. Seol from Reading was outstanding.

De Warriors supplanted England as mih squad in Germany...but I rooting fuh England 20 years now (gawd...is so long since "Hands of God"???:o) they still ah close second.

We could go back and forth on Gerrard (ah saw yuh post in de other thread)...but breeze hit Shearer harder before.  Agree that he lost his balance...but not from defensive contact.

Too early to tell fuh Kanu...but I love opportunistic strikers...yuh can't teach that.

Seol was outstanding...agreed, props to S. Korea for placing about 3 (by my count) national team members in the Premiership.  Good start for Seol coming over from Wolverhampton.

........So what do you think he was gesturing to the referee for and telling the referee when his "bum" was on the ground?!?  (Watch the hihlights/replays again and wipe off yuh glasses this time)
Yuh think he was tellin' the referee that the pitch needed watering?:  "C'mon ref, the ground's too bloody 'ard! Get some water on it, will you?"
Since a whole lotta people, including the media, the comentators and even a liverpool supporter or two have said it wasn't a penalty that the liverfoolians that had come out wit dey guns blastin on  de weekend eh have nutt'n to say bout it again.  Ah love it, too!!

When I played my mangy little years of school and recreational football, youngster, I DIDN'T  ask the referee for fouls if no fouls were committed.  That is how I learned to play the game: with class, sportsmanship and "Fair Play"  we didn't need no fair play banner!!   Now that I coach youngsters, I teach them what I was taught.  I teach them to play clean, play fair and use SKILL!! Cll me an unrealistic idealist, but I rather be that and produce players that think "game first" rather than the ones that think "cheat first"  If this is what you are being taught where you are learning "The beautiful game", that as soon as you feel or can anticipate contact, you start working on your appeal to get a foul called/man carded/penalty awarded, then you are being robbed of a lot of lessons in sport and in life and I pity you and your coaches.  If this trend continues (which ai see it is) football will become a totally different sport by the time the next generation comes around!

Gerrard didn't dive but that WAS NOT  a foul.

Not even close. Since when you could foul someone without contact? gerrard make his play, lose his balance and fall down plain and simple.

I don't know what that ref was smoking.

I agree with everything you said, but where I take issue with Gerrard was that when he "fell" to the ground, he was appealing to the referee for a penalty.  Now alot of the same people that would defend Gerrard for doing that, are the same people who criticized Ronaldo for getting involved and getting Rooney sent off in the WC.  I feel that there was absolutely no contact and Gerrard did try to stay on his feet and did lose his balance as a result, but, in typical Gerrard-like fashion, he was quick to appeal for the penalty didn't he?  He even had an exchange with the player that "fouled" him as if to justify his appeal.
