Thomson scores his first goal in Exeter's colours

Forest Green Rovers 1-1 Exeter

Jake Thomson's first goal in Exeter's colours was the highlight of City's final pre-season friendly.

The former Saint collected a fine James Dunne pass and slotted past James Bittner on 55 minutes but substitute Jack Winter's effort meant the spoils were shared at the New Lawn.

Thomson started on the right-hand flank in a shadow City line-up including plenty of squad players and he put through a high-quality through ball to create the first chance of the match but the linesman flagged for offside as 1st year pro Kyle Bassett raced through.

It was almost half an hour in when the first real chance was created, Chris Shephard's well-hit shot was kept out thanks to a fine stop from former City keeper Bittner.

And he had to be at his best again minutes later after Thomson's inch-perfect back post cross was headed goalwards by James Norwood.

The home side's number nine Reece Styche then missed a great chance to open the scoring after getting goal-side of Jack Furzer but he smashed an effort over the crossbar.

The final chance of the first half saw Scot Bennett head a goal-bound effort off the line from Ross Dyer after the striker went past Krysiak.

And it was Dyer who had the first chance of the second half just seconds in as he forced City's Polish shotstopper into a decent save.

This game was increasingly becoming about both side's goalkeepers, Bittner again showing his ability to tip over a technically brilliant chip from Thomson over his crossbar.

But he couldn't do anything about the opening goal. Dunne slipped a through ball through from central midfield to Thomson bombing away on the right hand side and he slotted a shot into the far corner.

The lively Trinidad & Tobago international then moved more centrally and had the Grecians' next two chances, first he thumped a rocket of a shot over the bar from Bertie Cozic's pass then after weaving through the defence he poked wide when well placed.

Dunne was one player pushing for a first team place for the Colchester game on Saturday and he seemed to ignore the friendly status of the game with a series of competitive challenges.

On the 74th minute the home side scored the equaliser when Winter's looping cross-shot flew in and the celebrations by Forest Green's number 12 and the majority of the 499 present showed what it meant to them.

City responded by sending on Aaron Dawson and Dan Western, followed shortly by Noah Keats.

Joe Heath then slipped Norwood through on the left-hand flank and the youngster span his marker superbly and got to the byline before hitting a shot high and wide of the far post.

Forest Green sub David Accam, who lit up the Reserve match between the two sides at The Park last season, came on in the second half and showed an example of his obvious ability with a wonderful run through the City defence that ended with Krysiak saving well at his feet.

Heath's right-footed shot over the crossbar proved to be the final real action of the match. Now the real work starts.

City lined-up: Krysiak, Thomson, (Dawson) Bennett, Furzer, Heath, Frear, Shephard, (Keats) Cozic, (Western) Dunne, Bennett, Norwood.

Exeter City Reserves 4 AFC Bournemouth 1
exetercity.co.uk

Exeter City Reserves ran out comfortable 4-1 winners tonight in the totesport.com combination clash with Bournemouth at The Park.

A strong City line-up found themselves three goals up after just 12 minutes and made comfortable work of their first second-string match at St James Park since September.

It took just a matter of seconds for the Grecians to take the lead when Richard Logan flew down the left hand flank and his deep back post cross was headed home by John O'Flynn.

Just seven minutes later it was two when Elliott Frear's left footed cross was met by a lovely header from Troy Archibald-Henville that looped into the top corner.

Troy, wearing the number 10 for his 45 minutes on the pitch, is yet to open his account for the first team but you suspect if he connects with deliveries like he did on this occasion his first goal surely won't be far away.

Logan was arguably the only first teamer from recent weeks lining up for Andy Tilson's side and he showed just why he's been in the starting XI for the majority of the campaign so far with a classy third for the Grecians on 12 minutes.

Jake Thomson sent a lovely long ball from deep in his own half and Logan raced onto it, getting to the ball before keeper Dan Thomas he lofted a chip into the back of the net.

The only downside for City this evening was the Bournemouth goal. Troy under-hit his backpass, the Bournemouth forward beat Artur Krysiak to the ball, cleverly shimmied past him and rolled the ball home.

The three goal lead was restored again on 37 minutes with the final goal of the match, Jake Thomson tried his luck with an optimistic 35 yard looping free kick on the right hand flank which Thomas could only touch over his head and into the far corner of his own net.

Logan and Troy were withdrawn at the interval for Dan Western and Jack Furzer and with the first move of the half it could have been 5-1 when O'Flynn cut inside off the left flank and curled an effort just wide from the angle.

The Irishman had another chance shortly after when Thomson showed searing pace down the right hand side before sending a low cross towards him but his close range shot was kept out.

Aaron Dawson tried his luck with an ambitious half-way line volley while Frear shot just wide after a sensational pass from Rob Edwards. Dawson, Frear and Thomson all had chances as the half wore on but couldn't find another goal for the Grecians.

City Lined Up: Krysiak, Thomson, Bennett, Archibald-Henville, Frear, Cozic, Edwards, Dawson, Stewart, O'Flynn, Logan.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.
