St. Lucia's non-participation in WC qualifying is riddled with questions but T&T's non-participation in Olympic qualifying is maybe even more egregious. It has some of the same characteristics, but of course we live in the Land of Short Memories.

We don't have short memories. We know it is a waste of time dwelling over ineptitude.

Shabazz steps down as St Lucia football coach.
T&T Guardian Reports.

Rumours are circling the Caribbean that T&T’s Jamaal Shabazz has stepped down as the head coach of the St Lucia men’s national football team.

Shabazz, 57, who has also coached the Guyana men’s team as well as served as interim T&T coach was appointed head coach of the St Lucia men’s team in 2019 and was expected to lead that country through the first round of the 2022 Concacaf World Cup qualifiers against Haiti, Nicaragua, Belize and Turks & Caicos.

However, on the eve of their opening match in the round-robin Group C series in March, St Lucia withdrew.

FIFA did not announce a reason for the withdrawal, saying in a statement that “further details will follow in due course.”

St. Lucia, a Caribbean island nation ranked 175th, was the first of 211 nations to withdraw from qualifying, which has been reconfigured due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Host Qatar is guaranteed a berth, and the other nations are competing for 31 slots in the tournament, to be played from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18 next year.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee may impose sanctions for a withdrawal, but sanctions usually are contemplated in the event of a boycott.

Back then the decision to withdraw from the qualifiers by the St Lucia Football Association did not sit well with the players and the St Lucia Government.

News that the Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA) took the decision to not participate in the qualifies shocked players of the national football team, who protested outside the association’s headquarters in La Clery, demanding answers from the executive.

The Government of St Lucia responded to the news, expressing disappointment.

According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, the association took the decision without first consulting with the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports.

The SLFA is an independent organisation that governs football within Saint Lucia.

“The Government of Saint Lucia through its Sports Infrastructure Programme made it a priority to upgrade the Soufriere Mini Stadium to host World Cup qualifiers and the Government of Saint Lucia is clear and unambiguous in its commitment to upgrade facilities for this particular objective,” said the statement.

The statement added: “The Government of Saint Lucia is further concerned about reports that the ‘authorities’ turned down requests for special training permissions for a national football team.

“The government can confirm that we have no record of a request being made by the SLFA to have a team train for World Cup Qualifiers.”

According to the government, neither the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports nor the Office of the Chief Medical Officer received such a request.

Added the statement: “Despite the fact that high contact sports are not allowed under the current Covid-19 protocols due to the high risk the government has made special provisions for national athletes and this is reflected in the legislation. The Government of Saint Lucia, through the Ministry of Health, recently facilitated training for Platinum FC from Vieux Fort South who are due to travel in April for a tournament in Curacao.

“The Government will also be assisting with the vaccination of these footballers and team members. The Ministry of Health has also facilitated some netballers and other athletes who requested one-on-one training or training with strict protocols.

“Hopefully, the Football Association will engage with the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports and local footballers to resolve this matter.

“We look forward to the full clarification from the Saint Lucia Football Association as to the reasons for Saint Lucia’s withdrawal.

The Government of Saint Lucia has made significant investments in sports in Saint Lucia, including football, with the establishment of the Sports Academy and the upgrading of all our sporting facilities in order to attract regional and international tournaments.

“The Government will continue to do all it can to facilitate the advancement of our athletes and Saint Lucia as a leader in sports.

“The Government sees the participation in activities such as World Cup Qualifiers as critical to the development of sports and has done all in its power to facilitate the involvement of our athletes."

Efforts were made to contact Shabazz, the former T&T national women’s coach and Technical Director of local professional out Morvant Caledonia United.

Efforts were made to contact Shabazz, the former T&T national women’s coach and Technical Director of local professional out Morvant Caledonia United but up to press time there was no contact.

Shabazz had signed two-year contract back in 2019 to replace Francis “Panko” Mc Donald who managed the St Lucian team, during the Windward Islands Senior Football Tournament and and it is rumoured he has already found employment with another Caribbean Football Union nation, with an announcement expected to be made soon.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Shabazz appointed as Guyana head coach for the fourth time
By Rawle Toney (Guyana Chronicle)

THE Guyana Football Federation (GFF) officially announced the return of Jamaal Shabazz to the helm of the country’s senior men’s national programme – the Golden Jaguars.

Having first taken charge of the Golden Jaguars in 2005, the 57-year-old Trinidad and Tobago native will make his fourth stop as the Golden Jaguars Head Coach, after also serving in 2011 – 2012 and 2015 – 2016.

“Today marks another new and exciting chapter in the history of Guyana’s Golden Jaguars. We are pleased to announce that Mr. Jamaal Shabazz is the new Head Coach for the Senior Men’s National Team,” Wayne Forde, president of the GFF said at a press conference hosted at the Federation’s National Training Centre at Providence.

“The GFF’s Executive Committee is extremely confident in Coach Shabazz’s track record and his ability to lead the national team programme and to build on the sturdy foundation already set in place. He is a master of his art who brings extensive expertise and experience to this role,” Forde said.

The GFF president added that “it goes without saying that he will have our full and unrelenting support as we continue to shape the programme towards qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

This is quite possibly the best time to remind all Guyanese that it is not a team that qualifies for a FIFA World Cup, but rather — a nation.”

A DIFFERENT APPROACH

Shabazz departed in 2016 following a heart-breaking 4 – 2 defeat to Reggae Boyz at the National Track and Field Centre in the 2016 Caribbean Cup Qualifiers, where the Jamaicans came from being down 2 – 0 at half time to win.

Since then, the Golden Jaguars were led by Shabazz’s assistant, Wayne Dover, former Jamaica International Michael Johnson and recently, Brazilian Marcio Maximo.

Shabazz lauded the three coaches for all their inputs towards the Golden Jaguars, while adding, “I’m here to build upon the platform of their work, while bringing my own experience, love and commitment to the game. Building isn’t all about ‘mashing down’ but it is about using platforms that have been established already.”

The Morvant Caledonia football club founder highlighted the change in Guyana’s football landscape over the last 15 years when he was first introduced to the ‘Land of Many Waters’ as a coach.

At the press conference, where Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., along with Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Kashif Muhammed were in attendance, Shabazz reminded the gathering of media and other GFF execs, of the many times they were forcefully removed from venues after breaching the borders of the facility to gain access to train, since no permission was given.

“When I look at the technological and infrastructural advancement in the last five years, a lot has to do with the leadership of president Forde and the executives,” Shabazz said.

Shabazz is calling for a collective approach, with all stakeholders involved, particularly the Government of Guyana and the media, for him to achieve success this time around.

Meanwhile, Minister Ramson Jr, upon listing the many achievements of Shabazz under his previous tenures as Head Coach, assured the nation that the Trinidadian will be more than capable in leading the Golden Jaguars to prosperity.

“Jamaal Shabazz comes with the credentials, he comes with the experience; he comes with the record that’s proven and tested. And on behalf of the Government of Guyana, I would like to welcome him back,” Ramson said.

The Golden Jaguars ended their season under former Coach, Marcio Maximo, with a failed bid at qualifying for the 2020 CONCACAF Gold Cup, as well as falling short of advancing to the next round of their FIFA Qatar World Cup Qualifier.

Shabazz completes communications course in Europe
Kaieteur News

Golden Jaguars Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz broke new ground completing a course in Strategic Communications at UEFA Academy in Geneva Switzerland, recently.

Shabazz was the only football coach among a group of Communications Experts from the European Football Union (UEFA). The UEFA Strategic Communications Compact Course ran from January 24 to 27 and was attended by the Heads of Media and Communications for countries including France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Wales, Norway, Finland and Turkey among others.

The Trinidad born Shabazz viewed his attendance as a personal investment to his career.

“Its important to equip myself with additional competencies, since a lot of our work in modern football involves communication and human resource management, explained Shabazz.

“UEFA is the most advanced Confederation in FIFA and this experience has sharpened my insight for an adjusted approach in terms of Communications.

Some of the topics delivered at the UEFA   Strategic Communications course included; Evidence-oriented communications, Quantifying the impact and benefits of PR in the modern world, Content strategy and campaigns, Political Advocacy and Introduction to issues management & crisis communications.

“When we look at the impact UEFA Champions League has on our psyche in the Caribbean it reflects a clear communications strategy that has worked and influenced the world.

“The ambitions we have for 2026 demands a competence greater than coaching. We have to mobilize a country and get different stakeholders working towards one objective, added Shabazz.

Shabazz mentioned a need for Federations in the Caribbean to recruit young people and invest in the future.

“There is a techno savvy youngster born after 2000 that we not utilizing at all. They can reach the masses faster than a press conference with just a touch of their phone.”

“We need to recruit them because they understand communicating in the here and now, added Shabazz.

Despite his personal investment Shabazz acknowledged the role of the Office of the President of the Cooperate Republic of Guyana, the Ministry of Sport, Culture and Youth in Guyana, Go Logistics and the GFF in making his trip possible.

The Guyana National Coach will leave Switzerland over the weekend and spend 10 days in the United Kingdom observing overseas based players.
