Following the launching of the 2006/2007 Digicel Caribbean Cup in Kingston, Jamaica earlier this month, Digicel held another launch for the preliminary stage of the competition in Curacao last Thursday as the Netherlands Antilles prepares to host one of the groups from September 6-10.
The four nations competing there will include Netherlands Antilles, Grenada, Guyana and Suriname. The top two teams will then advance to the second round in November leading up to the eight-team finals to be played in T&T from late January.
Digicel announced in Curacao that it intends to make the 2006/2007 tournament the biggest ever and has several promotions planned. The fans who attend matches are promised to enjoy - Free Digicel handouts and football memorabilia; Chances to win cash and prizes in promotional games and activities; Enjoy the party carnival type atmosphere that will be developed by Digicel at each game; Witness the dancing exploits of the Digi girls and be part of the football beat and kids will have a chance to be part of the tournament by becoming the team mascots with the international teams for the day.
Digicel Dutch Caribbean marketing manager Ciro Kroon expressed excitement ahead of the matches, saying: “This will not just be a football game, we will organize a grand party in the stadium. We are looking for all kinds of ways in which we can unite the Caribbean. We are doing so with telecommunications, but we want to do it through sports as well”.
“Football is a sport that is liked by everybody. Now’s the time to give the Caribbean island a chance. We have just seen the world cup games in which Trinidad & Tobago played. By organizing more of these events we are promoting sports and provide a stimulus for players throughout the region who would like to represent the Caribbean during the next World Cup” Kroon added.
Jean Francisca, President of the Netherlands Antilles Football Association said that his island will no doubt benefit from hosting the group.
“It is fantastic to welcome the Digicel Caribbean Cup to our country. With 6 matches to be played here, we are looking forward to a real festival of football with a rare opportunity for fans to enjoy international football on their doorstep and we look forward to welcoming big crowds for all the games,” Francisca said. Shabazzs Guyana qualifies for Digicel Cup second round.
By: Shaun Fuentes.

Suriname bounced back from a heavy defeat to Guyana earlier in the week to stop Grenada 1-0 in Fridays Group A encounter in the Digicel Caribbean Cup first round at the Ergilio Hato stadium in Curacao

The Dutch-speaking islanders started the game in confident fashion, taking early control of the game against the lackluster Grenadians. It was no surprise when they grabbed the lead and the eventual winner in the 35th minute through Gorden Kinsaine. After teammate Cliften Sandvliet went past two defenders, his shot was partially blocked by the goalkeeper but Kinsaine was on the spot to convert on the rebound.

Grenada lifted their game in the second half, forcing Suriname on the back foot for much of it but to little avail though. Suriname went close to a second item when Ivanildo Vlijter struck the post near the end.

Guyana meantime secured their berth in the second round when they hammered hosts Netherlands Antilles 5-0 on Friday. They had earlier beaten Suriname 5-0 as well on Wednesday.

The Guyanese team, coached by Trinidadian Jamaal Shabazz, silenced the home fans as they took control of the match and took the lead on 31 minutes through Gregory Richardson. The player made a solo run and then held off a challenge before slotting past the advancing goalkeeper.

The Netherlands improved and went close to finding an equalizer early in the second half but they were soon punished for not converting. Nigel Codrington turned his man cleverly and drilled one into the far corner on 58 minutes to send Guyana up  2-0. The homeside withered and Guyana capitalized by grabbing three further goals.
Randolph Jeromes fine diving header, connecting firmly with Walter Moores corner, added to Guyanas lead and a 3-0 margin. Then Codringtons second goal of the night on 73 minutes, a fine right footed strike from the edge of the penalty area, ended the game as a contest.

Suriname applied late pressure in search of a consolation strike but found it hard against a sturdy Guyanese defense. . Jerome Abrahams solo goal in the final minute sealed Guyanas victory and left Suriname with an uphill challenge to qualify for the next phase of the competition. The second round starts in November with the eight-team finals carded for T&T in January 2007.
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
