Panama looks to Dely Valdes twins for Gold Cup

Panama is counting on the offensive firepower of twins Jorge and Julio Dely Valdes, who retired from the national squad last year.

Hernandez said that the Dely Valdes brothers were on the preliminary list, but not yet on the final roster.

The coach said he spoke with the brothers about playing or helping coach the squad to boost the offense.

Jorge and Julio have been working out for a while, but the coaching staff wants to make sure they are in good condition before making a decision on whether to add them to the squad, Hernandez said.

The two players are interested in playing for the first time in the CONCACAF Gold Cup competition, Hernandez said.

Jorge and Julio Dely Valdes played their last match for the national team, when the Panamanian squad qualified for the regional finals for a spot in the 2006 World Cup with a 3-0 win over El Salvador in Panama City.

The Panamanian team, meanwhile, has been practicing for more than a week and plans to travel to the United States on July 4, two days before the start of the Gold Cup.

Panama must submit its roster 15 days before the start of the tournament, in which the Central American squad will compete in Group A against Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Honduras.

Panama's first game will be against Colombia July 6 in the Orange Bowl in Miami.

The Gold Cup tournament will be played July 6-24 at venues in Miami, Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston, Houston and New York.

The 12 teams participating in the 2005 Gold Cup soccer tournament have submitted their preliminary rosters.

The competition will be among three four-team groups, each of which will play in the first round to determine the best two squads in each group. Two third-ranked teams from among the four groups will also qualify for the quarterfinals.

The quarterfinals will be played the weekend of July 16-17 in Foxboro, Massachusetts, and Houston.

The Gold Cup semifinals and the final are scheduled to be held in Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Thursday, July 21 and Sunday, July 24, respectively.

The teams taking part in the Gold Cup are Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, South Africa and Trinidad an
