Carpette ‘Caps’ Central Championship.
By: Naz Yacoob (Guardian).
[/size]

“It is one of the better young teams that I have ever coached.” These were the words of former T&T midfielder Leon Carpette, after Carapichaima Senior Comprehensive School copped its biggest success to date, when it won the BGTT Central Zone of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL).
‘Caps’ achieved the feat, when it defeated defending champions Presentation College by 3-0 on Thursday in the eight round of the competition.
‘Caps’ started playing in the Secondary Schools Football League in 1980 and competed in the East Zone, participating in the Senior and Under-16 Divisions, and because of its consistent performance in the league, it became one of only two teams to be admitted to play in the Championship Division of the East/Central Zone.
‘Caps’ participation in the East was noteworthy because although not lifting a single trophy, its discipline on and off the field was quickly noted by officials of the SSFL.
When the Central Zone Championship Division was eventually formed, ‘Caps’ became one of the dominant teams, winning the Central ‘InterCol’ title on several occasions, also proving a serious threat to arch-rivals, Presentation College.
With hard work and serious dedication, ‘Caps’ reached the National ‘InterCol’ final in 1992. It came up against Belmont Secondary at the Hasely Crawford Stadium and lost the game, not before earning the respect of all.
The entire Central population rallied around the team and it received a standing ovation from the partisan crowd for it stout performance.
Once again, the ‘lads’ from Central Trinidad had to journey to East after the league was restructured. This time, however, they were treated with some respect, anytime they played.
Five years ago, the Central Zone was again reintroduced, ‘Caps’ continue to perform consistently and were always high in the rankings, with a serious potential to win.
Such was the commitment and dedication to the sport, that several of the players were rewarded with scholarships abroad, and others moved on to the Pro League, participating with a great deal of distinction. Last year, ‘Caps’ won the zonal intercol competition, and because of some unfortunate circumstances had to settle for second place in the league.
Over the years, the well oiled and disciplined school, have had the honour and privilege in having the services of various coaches, who all played an important part in the develoment and progress of football and several other sporting discipline, including Kenneth Franco, Abdul Rasheed, Jan Steadman, Leroy Spann, Anthony Streete, Everald ‘Gally’ Cummings, Lawrence Rondon and Leon Carpette.
“Despite financial and other constraints, we at Carapichaima Senior Comprehensive, have always been striving for the success that have eluded us on many occasions. We believe in the holistic development of the student, thus ensuring that our footballers are given the forum to exibit the skill and talent they possess,” said team manager Steve Gopiesingh.
Carpette attributed the team’s success to the crop of players he had to work with.
“They are a quality bunch, eager to learn and go forward in the game. One of the key element in our success, was the high level of discipline shown by the players,” Carpette stated.
“A lot of the guys have the talent but were lacking in certain areas in the field. Myself and assistant coach Rondon (Lawrence) decided to work on it. I think with our past experience it did work out,” Carpette said.
And to add to the celebrations in Central Trinidad, the ‘Caps’ girls team emerged as the champion team in the Girls Division.
In extending congratulations to the team, president of the SSFL, Ewing Davis, praised the efforts of ‘Caps’ and said that football is on the rise in Central Trinidad, particularly in the schools competition.

A time to help ailing former national footballer Leon Carpette
By Garth Wattley (T&T Express)

The first footballer I can remember seeing in the flesh is Leon Carpette.

It was a sunny afternoon at the Queen’s Park Oval. I was less than 10 years old. And I can’t with any certainty say what was the game and who Carpette was playing for. But in my childish imagination he stood out, physically. I remember a tall red man with a big Afro and his socks down to his ankles.

This was sometime in the mid to late seventies and that look was somewhat fashionable. And I knew he was a sort of important player from what my father told me.

So in a week that has already been filled with so much loss for so many people, it is with sadness I learned of the difficult plight that this former national player now faces.

Since October last year “Nab” Carpette, 68, has been battling the effects of a stroke, in fact more than one. His situation has deteriorated further this week.

Sickness and hard times don’t seem to spare any one of us. At some stage we have adversity to face. And right now, Carpette is having a time of trouble. So remember him. And where possible, do what you can to support.

The public will get that opportunity on November 6 when the Valiants Sports Club hosts a Benefit Brunch at the Pleasantville Community Centre on Prince Albert Street for “a most pleasant personality.” That is how one of Nab’s friends, Adrian Chandler describes him.

On the field, Carpette was one of those who contributed to some of the memories followers of the game in the seventies hold dear.

“He was a sturdy midfielder, a good reader of the game...He was dependable and reliable,” Veteran Footballers Foundation (VFOTT) president Selby Browne recalls.

“His distribution was accurate and he used his height to full advantage as a good header of the ball.”

Carpette used those skills first and briefly, for the San Fernando Technical Football team that began a famous run of InterCol and League triumphs in 1969 and which stretched out to 1972. But Carpette’s physical skills also served the national team well, especially the celebrated squad that played in the 1973 Concacaf World Cup qualifying tournament in Haiti. That team was led by Selwyn Murren and included the outstanding Warren Archibald, Everald “Gally” Cummings and Steve David. Carpette’s passes certainly would have helped those fellows to do their thing.

When he was not wearing T&T colours, Carpette was making a name for himself with Telco in the Southern Football Association (SAFA) and also represented SAFA in inter-league competition. He would also have figured in North-South clashes and turned out for Paragon and then San Fernando Strikers in the short-lived ASL professional football league. Later on, Carpette began his association with Valiants.

Fact is, he was part of the football “happy days,” for many of you, a contributor to the good memories of your youth.

There is no accurate way to quantify what impact experiences from activities like sport can have on our well-being. But as I’m sure you can testify, dear reader, they certainly do a whole lot for us, years after they occurred. It is the same with culture. Excuse me, but I had to find a way to mention the mightiness of the Shadow, Winston Bailey, no longer among us. But at least audio technology will allow that calypso legend to keep giving sage wisdom and heart-warming humour through splendid rhythm. When it comes to sport though, there is a challenge.

Printed, not to mention video archive material is not so efficient for the era in which men like Carpette played. It therefore remains a challenge to give proper recognition in the present to the contribution of athletes from the decades before the 21st century. And because of the inevitable disconnect that results, rallying support for them in their times of need is doubly difficult.

Browne’s Foundation has been striving manfully to assist senior members of the football fraternity.

“We have embarked on receiving a container of medical appliances such as walkers, hospital beds, etc to facilitate the membership,” he says, adding that VFOTT has also established an insurance plan for its members.

Good on them.

The truth is however, as much as well-wishers may try, not all situations can be catered for as adequately as would be hoped.

But Leon Carpette and those like “Nab” need to know they haven’t been forgotten.

Show him on November 6.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

RIP Leon Carpette.

As youth when I first started following TT football, his name was mentioned alongside other greats such as De Leon, Steve David and others.

Football icon Carpette dies.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Only days after the public was asked to support him financially, ex-national footballer Leon Carpette has died. He was 68 years.

Carpette considered one of the country's footballing icons who played an instrumental role on the famous 1973 football team which lost 2-1 to Haiti in Port-au-Prince, despite scoring five goals in a crucial CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier, passed away yesterday morning after a long battle with two strokes.

It is understood he got a stroke last year and then another earlier this year. But things turned for the worst when his condition started deteriorating.

Friends and family members made a public call this week for Carpette to receive assistance, but it never happened.

Carpette grew up in Pleasantville and made a name for himself in the sport of football, representing the successful San Fernando Technical Institute during its period of dominance in the InterCol and League competitions in the late 1960s to early 1970s, winning almost every title at stake.

Carpette also represented Paragon, Telco and San Fern0ando Strikers in the Southern Football Association Competition, and also played in the North-South Classic. However, it was when he wore the red, white and black for T&T at the qualifiers that his name became a household one.

Selby Browne, president of the Veteran Football Foundation (VFF) said Carpette was a man of excellent character. "He was a good human being and a good friend to those who knew him."

Browne, an encyclopedia of local football, described Carpette as one of the standout midfielders in the 1973 T&T team. "He was a hard tackler of the ball, an excellent passer and a good reader of the game. Carpette also used his height to telling effect, as a good header of the ball. Generally, he was an excellent player and a good man. We called him the last of the red men in the game," Browne said.

Funeral arrangements are being made.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

VFFOTT extends condolences on the passing of Leon Carpette
VFFOTT Media

THE VETERAN FOOTBALLERS FOUNDATION OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO IS SADDENED BY THE PASSING OF MR. LEON “NAB” CARPETTE. FORMER OUTSTANDING NATIONAL FOOTBALLER AND MEMBER OF THE HISTORIC FIFA WORLD CUP 1974 QUALIFIERS. THE TEAM THAT REMAINS THE HIGHEST PLACED TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO TEAM TO DATE, IN THE CONCACAF WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS.

Mr. Selby Browne, President, of the Veteran Footballers Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago (VFFOTT) confirmed his sadness on receiving news of the passing of our own Mr. Leon “Nab” Carpette, former outstanding national footballer, who represented the historic national team that placed 2nd in the CONCACAF FIFA WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS 1974, after the disingenuous actions that placed Haiti 1st. At that time the CONCACAF had only one place in the FIFA World Cup.

Mr. Browne, as President of the Veteran Footballers Foundation on behalf of several past Trinidad and Tobago footballers, extends his condolences to Leon’s entire family, relatives and friends and give thanks for the wonderful memories, quiet moments and great fun, laughter and camaraderie we enjoyed.

Leon “Nab” Carpette, made a significant contribution to football by representing the Telco football team and the Southern Football Association, in addition to representing the Trinidad and Tobago National Football Team with distinction.

Leon gave back to the game by sharing his vast knowledge and commitment to football as coach of the Carapichaima Secondary School that won the Central Zone three years consecutively around the 2010 period.

Permit me to focus on the character of our Leon Carpette. His was the gift of having the heart, will and desire to win, the commitment to dedicated training, learning from his coaches and elder footballers to get to the top of the game and become national and international heros. He was a gentle giant, a man of integrity, with the desired moral fabric and a gentleman with his God as his guide.  He was as an exemplar, a father figure who molded young boys into men of principle and good character. He was a knowledgeable Coach, a motivator, and excellent strategist.

Our VFFOTT membership includes several of Leon’s 1974 National teammates and those of us who played against him, in addition to several match opponents and teammates during the past five decades.

His passing makes it three members of members of that historic 1974 Nation team that VFFOTT has lost this year, namely; Lawrence Rondon, Ray Roberts and now Leon Carpette.

Today, despite the fact that several of our members at the age of 70, still want to play football matches, I wish to take this opportunity to invite all past footballers to become members of the Veteran Footballers Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago (VFFOTT) to bring our membership to 300, in order to immediately participate in the Death Benefit Insurance Policy offer, that provides a lump sum payment to a stated beneficiary, based on an annual premium payment.

The membership would also be able to subscribe to the “Son Baptiste Trust Fund” to aid deserving members in times of medical and economic challenges.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.
