Guns out: Guaya vows to attack Connection in FA quarters
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868)

The “Green Army” is readying its artillery.
Guaya United coach Ron La Forest has vowed to attack DIRECTV W Connection with everything he has as the two outfits prepare to do battle again in a potentially thrilling TTFA FA Trophy quarterfinal contest on Wednesday December 3 from 3.30 pm in Guayaguayare.
Just a week and a half ago, Connection whipped Guaya 3-0 in a Toyota Classic semifinal clash at Couva’s Ato Boldon Stadium en route to winning the competition outright. La Forest insisted that it will be a different affair in Guayaguayare as the Super League team seeks revenge against the present Pro League leader and arguably the best team in the country at present.
There will be an intriguing match-up at Mahaica Oval too where Point Fortin Civic hosts fellow Pro League team North East Stars from 3.30 pm while another top flight outfit, Central FC, travels to Palo Seco to challenge Southern Football Association (SFA) club, Petrotrin, from 6 pm.
At least one lower league club is guaranteed a spot in the FA Trophy semifinal round as Super League team, Malabar FC, will take on Northern Football Association (NFA) side, Queen’s Park CC, from 6 pm at the Dibe Recreation Ground in Long Circular.
Of course, La Forest hopes that Guaya will be the second non-Pro League club in the final four although his not-so-secret weapon will be around the field rather than on it.
“Our team will be feeding off of the support we have in Guaya,” said La Forest, a former Joe Public and national youth team head coach. “The crowd will be in close quarters and that will give us the drive. It should be a different match to what happened at the stadium.
“The last one we played, we were more cautious; (but) now that we have a fair idea of what they have, we will be more open. We will hit them with what got us this far; and that is when we attack, we attack with full force.”
Guaya’s output is based around the formidable central midfield partnership of team captain Ryan Stewart and former national youth team captain Leston Paul while wingers Jody Allsop and Kevin Jagdeosingh often dart in from the flanks to contribute crucial goals.
The 31-year-old Stewart limped off the field in the Classic match against Connection and has not played since; but he is cautiously optimistic about featuring in Wednesday’s crucial contest. But Paul is ready to take up the playmaker’s role if necessary and the 23-year-old gave a wonderful advert of his attacking ability in the final 30 minutes of the Classic semis.

Speaking of guns. If the other Winchester is allowed to play in the quarters and beyond, and its a big if, La Forest , Guaya, and all the other teams going forward are going to have a huge problem containing this young gun. Just saying.

I don't believe Winchester can play until the transfer window opens because he is returning from loan overseas and needs an International Transfer Certificate.

Great article, really in depth and informative.

Good to see Leston Paul making a return to local football, hope he is successful in Finland/Iceland. Now time for Jomal Williams to step up his game and take Jones place as the most gifted midfielder in the pro-league.

bless his heart, the man have no guile whatsoever.

that and overconfidence is bad news against a savvy outfit like Connection. ron feel is Angostura or House of Dread he playing against.

that said, it will be good for local football if guaya lifts the trophy. the players, and especially the supporters deserve it. and if only to embarrass skeene and company to come good on some of those empty promises they make every year at the league opening

...

Raised my eyebrow too ... curious to see how it plays out for Guaya. Naturally attacking players tend to hold to their principles, buh I want to believe he doh mean that full-bore literally.

Palos is correct, anybody that knows Ron will tell you the same thing, that's the way he played and it's the same way he coaches,Ron will give u chat and beat u the same way,it's a strategy he uses to ofset played and play with peoples minds, right now he is sending messages to WC.

I think what he is saying is right,he has been having a successful season win, loose or draw, what ever strategy he is useing he is successful with it,if he have to win don't go and tie up your players with a different strategy because it's WC,be confident they good we good too that's the mind set you want to give your players,as a matter of fact WC have more to loose than Guaya.

I like the way he talking,it's all in the game don't take him serious.

W Connection passes tough FA test in Guaya
« Reply #251 on: December 05, 2013, 11:25:04 AM »
W Connection passes Guaya FA test

As yesterday’s TTFA FA Trophy quarterfinal fixture at the Guaya Secondary ground headed towards stoppage time, DIRECTV W Connection coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier and his assistants Earl Jean and Trevor Nottingham were on their feet shouting at their players to retreat into a compact defensive block.
And, as referee Gyasi McDonald’s final shrill of the whistle confirmed Connection’s 1-0 triumph over Guaya United, courtesy of a first half Jem Gordon strike, Fevrier and club owner David John Williams’ satisfied looks spoke volumes.
In theory, Pro League rival Central FC should offer a tougher test of Connection’s ambitions in Saturday’s League fixture at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva. But Fevrier insisted that yesterday’s triumph over the ambitious Super League team, on a heavy pitch in front of a large, noisy and passionate home crowd, was one of his team’s biggest results this season.
“To me, this is one of our best wins this season when you consider the standard of the ground,” Fevrier told Wired868. “Guaya doesn’t usually lose in Guaya. They are considered better on those conditions than us…
“We showed that we are a professional team because we showed (we can make) the adjustment.”
Connection displayed the strength that the club has in depth too. Defender Mekeil Williams, who captained the side yesterday, was the only player who started in Connection’s Toyota Classic final win over Club Sando on the weekend.
Fevrier explained that the decision to play his reserve squad, as he has done throughout the FA competition so far, was not a discourtesy to the tournament or yesterday’s opponent.
“I always put faith in my players because they all do the same training and they all have talent,” said Fevrier. “I never talk to my players about a first team and a second team. They are (one) squad.”
At the other end, Guaya coach Ron La Forest was satisfied too as the “Green Army” narrowed the gap after a 3-0 loss to Connection in the Toyota Classic semifinal; and despite being without the injured pair of playmaker and captain Ryan “Fry” Stewart and free scoring winger Kevin Jagdeosingh.
“You can see the improvement today,” said La Forest. “I won’t focus on who wasn’t here because we try to train two people for every position. The leadership was lacking at times but otherwise I was most happy with the game.”
Secretly, Guaya’s considerable support-base might have enjoyed giving Connection a torrid time too.
“Allyuh training whole day and this is the best allyuh have?” one Guaya supporter asked the Connection technical area. “We does play football when we done hustle in the Point! Hahaha!”
The verbal jousting was as entertaining as the game was dogged.
“You eat Gouti toenail?” one supporter asked Connection attacker Carmilo Ortega, after his foul on Guaya’s stand-in captain Leston Paul. “How you wild so?!”

Connection edge Guaya in FA quarters; Stars, Central also among semi-finalists.
ttproleague.com.

Three TT Pro League clubs advanced into the semi-final round of the 2013 FA Trophy competition, but with slim results on Wednesday.

DIRECTV W Connection, North East Stars and Central FC all progressed into the semi-final pool, along with Super League outfit Malabar FC, which will be drawn on Friday and contested on Wednesday 11 December.

Three-time FA winners, W Connection, overcame a passionate Guaya United, a heavy surface, and an intimidating “Green Army” crowd at the La Savanne Recreation Ground in Guayaguayare with a 1-0 score, the same score-line managed by Central FC against home team Petrotrin Palo Seco at the Palo Seco Recreation Ground.

At the Mahaica Oval in Point Fortin, North East Stars needed a 4-2 penalty win following a goalless draw against fellow Pro League outfit Point Fortin Civic, while the fourth and final team reaching the semi-final round was Malabar FC, who defeated Queen’s Park Cricket Club FC 2-1.

Kevon Woodley fired Malabar ahead in the 14 th minute before QPCC’s Vladimir Suite leveled the score 1-1 in the 30th minute. It took Malabar until the 65th minute at the Dibe Recreation Ground in Long Circular to find the match winner, scored by Gorian Highley.

On the opposite end of Trinidad, in Palo Seco, it was Keon Trim’s 45 th minute strike that earned last season’s defeated finalist Central its place in this season’s semi-final round.

And in Guayaguayare, an earlier item scored in the 22 nd minute by Tobagonian Mickaeel Jem Gordon gave Connection, still fresh from lifting this season’s Toyota Classic trophy last Friday, the much needed win.

W Connection head coach Stuart Charles Fevrier, who led the “Savonnetta Boys” to successfully defend the Digicel Charity Shield this season, occupy pole position in the Digicel Pro League table, and win the Toyota Classic Final 2-0 against Club Sando, said that Wednesday’s 1-0 FA quarterfinal round win over Guaya was definitely one of his team’s best for the season.

“Mainly because of the ground conditions,” he added, “… and mainly because Guaya don’t normally lose in Guaya.

“They were considered to be better in those conditions, than us … and with their home support … and in their own backyard, while we played with the nil.

“This is where our professionalism showed. The fact that the score ended 1-0.

“We just wanted to win the game. I told (my) players it’s just important to get the job done. 1 nil and 6 nil is the same because it’s a knockout competition. Goal average isn’t important.

“We are a professional team, because we could have made the adjustment. I really respect this win. I must give a lot of credit to my players for this win.

Gordon raced down the left before combining with Brazilian Celio Da Silva inside the area, and on the return pass the slim built forward curled his strike past Guaya goalkeeper Kevon Saunders for a 1-0 score.

But as the game progressed the rain-soaked surface became more and more difficult for both sides.

However the Ron La Forest coached-Guaya, which fell 3-0 against W Connection in the semi-final round of the Toyota Classic a week and a half ago, had a couple first chances to equalise.

In the 32 nd minute Kerdell Alfred, cheered on by a few hundred supporters, turned neatly and fired in a strike from just outside the area but directly at goalkeeper Aquelius Sylvester, who made an easy gather.

Guaya without top players Ryan Stewart and Kevin Jagdeosingh, both nursing injuries, were close in the 42 nd minute when a Jody Allsop freekick from the right crashed off the crossbar.

And in the 45 th minute a dipping strike from left-back John Stewart flew just beyond the far post.

La Forest was quite pleased following the match and didn’t dwell on the absence of R. Stewart and Jagdeosingh. Instead the Guaya coached said he was happy for the improvement displayed by his players against the side that defeated them 3-0 in the Toyota Classic.

Connection had a few openings in the second period but just couldn’t find the back of the net a second time.

Goalscorer Gordon struck wide of the upright in the 56 th minute after being picked out by a Jhon Stiven Reyes Lopez pass inside the area.

Ten minutes later Joevin Jones, who is scheduled to depart Trinidad on Saturday for a 12-day trial at Italian Serie A club Udinese, volleyed wide of the Guaya post on his first touch of the ball after replacing Camilo Ortega Diaz a minute earlier.

Jones was one of three second half introductions, striker Hashim Arcia and defensive midfielder Gerard Williams the others, made by Fevrier who utilized a second string outfit with the likes of Celio Da Silva Santos, Tremain Shayn Paul, Devaughn Elliot, goalkeeper Aquelius Sylvester, Gordon and Lopez.

“On a ground like that, you must make three substitutes,” explained Fevrier following the match. “Because to go and come for ninety minutes on those conditions, you must (add) fresh legs.

“Because our squad is small, you will find that our starters were on the bench. And because Jones is (going on trial) I kept it minimum just to keep him active.

“I also didn’t start him and other players on the bench because we have a [Digicel Pro League] game [against Central FC] on the weekend as well. And (after playing on the Guaya ground) we need at least three days to recover.”

The Connection coach also highlighted, “Not many coaches would play the team I played here today and that’s what makes the difference for W Connection. I (always) show faith and confidence in all my players. All of them train together and all of them have talent. I never make my players feel like they are reserves.

“So far, over the years, W Connection is the team that has gotten the best results using any of their players.”

Gordon, a developmental signing prior the start of the season, tried his luck at goal again in the 67 th minute, before being replaced by Arcia three minutes later, but his blast from the right whisked across the face of goal and out for a goal-kick to the delight of Guaya and its “Green Army” which on many instances verbally abused members of the W Connection technical area and match referee Gyasi Mc Donald.

Guaya goalkeeper Saunders pulled off a stop in the 76 th minute when he denied Jomal Williams and kept the hopes of the Guaya faithful alive.

But in the end, following four minutes time added on, it was Connection that left the battleground as heroes, while Guaya celebrated themselves proud soldiers of the game.

“This [victory] is not by guess,” said a proud W Connection owner/president David John Williams.

He and Fevrier gave details of their itinerary which included: a day off on Sunday, following Saturday night’s Toyota Classic Final win; a post-Final video session on Monday followed by training on the afternoon; a session with psychologist Brian Skinner on Tuesday morning before making the trip to Guayaguayare, and a training session at Amoco ground on the afternoon.

“So the result isn’t only on the field,” added Fevrier who made the trip to Guayaguayare on Sunday for a first time visit to the venue and to formalise arrangements at the Sunset Beach Resort for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Williams estimated costs at $8,000 for accommodating and meals for members of staff and its entire squad.

He said, “We have a standard to keep.”

Fevrier went further to add, “The word professional alone is a high level. What happens with other clubs is they don’t put value on being a professional club.”

Earlier this week the FA Trophy tournament organisers – Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) – unofficially revealed that there is a prize money structure to the tournament that went empty handed last season.

However, the tournament, which usually boasts an $80,000 winners’ prize along with the trophy, has been restructured to a $50,000 winners’ prize, $30,000 for the runners-up, and $20,000 going to the third place finishers.

Williams expressed his gratitude on the available prize monies.

“From zero to fifty” combined with a few chuckles, said it all.

Connection, Stars and Central will all return to Digicel Pro League action on the weekend in Round One Match Day Seven.

North East Stars will travel to the Hasely Crawford Stadium from 8 p.m. against San Juan Jabloteh on Friday following a 6 p.m. clash between St. Ann’s Rangers and Police FC.

On Saturday Point Fortin will host reigning champions Defence Force from 3:30 p.m. at the Mahaica Oval, and Connection against town-rivals Central from 5 p.m. at the Ato Boldon Stadium

I kept saying that our name is on the F.A. Trophy this year.....we've certainly had the luck of the draw. But every one of these games was a potential banana skin and I hate them!! Malabar may seem easy, but they have it all to play for. Even if we win the trophy, I'll still have to go and check it's there the next day before I really enjoy the feeling. Meantime, we have two tough games as North East or Connection will be massive if we get through. I just wish I had a lucky gonk!!

W Connection ripping things up this year - last year they looked like a team of strangers when I saw them at Easter, looks like they sorted out whatever was happening there

One of the most admiring things about Connection this year is that are effectively playing two teams...one in the league and one in the cup with only two or three guys overlapping both teams. Strength in depth is extremely had to achieve in T&T with tight budgets and is essential for a good CONCACAF campaign, so hopefully they will be more successful there next summer.

But don't let the 3-0 scoreline fool you. It was a tough game on a very heavy pitch. All North East are missing is a striker to replace Glen. I think Connection scored around 65 mins and of course NES applied more pressure and left gaps. The final goal was around 90th min.

They should look to the Super League - some good strikers down there

FS, now that you have commented on WC vs NES, what about Central vs Malabar?

FS, now that you have commented on WC vs NES, what about Central vs Malabar?

Pitch was very wet and heavy and rain fell throughout the game so it was never going to be a football festival.

Central very lucky.

Malabar took the lead. Peltier scored an excellent equaliser. (See goal here - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10152106398735330&set=o.494826560546022&type=2&theater). Oliver was stretchered off with a damaged arm.

Malabar won a fortunate penalty and converted well. Central went down to 10 men when Goodridge made an excellent clearance but collided with the goal post and was stretchered off and taken to hospital with suspected broken ribs. Jamal Jack headed a late equaliser. Both teams missed first penalty, but Central remained composed and won 3-2 on pens with Jan-Michael making a crucial save.
Malabar had around 100 supporters who made lots of noise. However, one worrying incident saw one of the Malabar supporters run across the track to berate the assistant referee. No security attended and the guy just wandered back to his seat.

Haven't seen a good Central performance since the Point Fortin game, so winning on penalties brought no satisfaction.

However, two F.A. Trophy finals in two years ain't bad and it's the second time this season that we've finished a semi with 10 men and won.

Thanks FS & good luck in the final.

I was told that WC also played the last 12 mins with 10 men & scored 2 goals as one of the defenders had to come off with a ham string injury & could not have been replaced as all subs had already been used.

This should be an interesting final as no doubt both teams would want to be victors.

Not sure, I think he was replaced, but I could be wrong. Both teams have won a cup this season and Central are the only team to defeat Connection so both teams will be up for it!!
