W Connection and San Juan Jabloteh, Trinidad and Tobago's top two clubs last season, begin their quests to become the CONCACAF Club Football champions when they take on Caribbean opposition this weekend in the Caribbean Zone qualifying series. Both teams will be involved in a week-long league series.
W Connection, who failed by just a goal to repeat as T&T Pro League champions in 2006, are based in Puerto Rico, where they will do battle with Puerto Rico Islanders, Fruta Conquerors and Hoppers FC. Connection begin their series tonight against Hoppers FC of Antigua.
Before leaving for the tournament, W Connection captain Earl Jean said that his men were coming good at the right time, as judged by their unbeaten run in 14 of their last league matches. Jean also said that their recent 3-1 victory over champions Joe Public in their final match of the local season had lifted their spirits further, even if they failed to get the 3-0 score which would have won them the title.
Meanwhile, Jabloteh, the 2005 T&T Pro League runners-up will be based for the week in the United States Virgin Islands where they will come up against SV Britannia, New Vibes and Sap FC. Jabloteh's series starts tomorrow against Antigua and Barbuda champions SAP FC at 5 p.m. On Tuesday , Jabloteh meet SV Britannia of Aruba and they end their series Thursday against US Virgin Island champs, New Vibes.
Meanwhile, The quarterfinal winners will advance to the Champions’ Cup Semifinal Series scheduled for 13-15 March and 3-5 April.
The Semifinal Series victors will play for the 2007 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup™ on 17-19 and 24-26 April, with the winner also qualifying to the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan later in the year. The Champions’ Cup Runner-up will be one of the three CONCACAF invitees to the 2007 Copa Nissan Sudamericana.
The 2007 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup™ will be broadcast on television by the FoxSports International regional programming channels (Fox Soccer Channel – USA; FoxSports en Español – USA; Fox Sports Latin America Northern Cone – Caribbean, Central America & Mexico). The CONCACAF Champions Cup™ is the longest running international club competition in the region and has crowned the champion club of the Confederation since its inception in 1962.
