Griffith's happy
Published on: 1/14/07.

by EZRA STUART in Trinidad

A FULL-STRENGTH Barbados team would have beaten Trinidad and Tobago in the opening match of the Digicel Caribbean Cup football finals at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Friday night, says Barbados' technical adviser Keith Griffith.

The teams, both depleted by the loss of most of their leading players, played to a 1-1 draw with the Bajans coming from a goal down at half-time to equalise.

Barbados went into the game without English-based strikers Paul Ifill and Mark McCammon and the injured starting defenders Rommell Brathwaite and Elvis Defreitas, as well as experienced duo of Michael Forde and Paul Lovell, and reserve defender Bryan Neblett.

Those players had all played in the Bajans' unbeaten first and second round campaign, which helped the team rise from 152nd to 98th in the FIFA world rankings.

"I believe that with Brathwaite and Defreitas, McCammon and Ifill, we would've blown Trinidad away, but as you know, all the little problems – no 'Banana' [Alvin Rouse] in goal; he is the team's motivator. [Goalkeeper] Morrison Taylor did very well, by the way, but I felt that if we had those four players, we would've beaten Trinidad quite comfortably," Griffith told the SUNDAY SUN.

"We wanted to get three points but when you are playing Trinidad at home at the Hasely Crawford and you come away with a point, you must be satisfied.

"I would have given them the edge in the first half, but in the second half, once we got our groove and our rhythm, I thought we looked the better team; and until [John] Hawkesworth was sent off, I believe we could have won that game by two goals to one," Griffith added.

Barbados will next oppose Haiti at 5 p.m. tomorrow, before taking on Martinique on Wednesday, and Griffith said the team will be hoping veteran Irish-based striker Eric Lavine who was scheduled to arrive in Barbados from Ireland over the weekend, will be able to join the team.

"This group is going to go right down to the bottom and we are looking forward with great anticipation to Monday's game. We are expecting Lavine to arrive in the morning and we will make the necessary adjustments.

"As you know, previously we played 4-4-2. Tonight, we played 5-3-2; and we may resort back to 4-4-2 against Haiti," Griffith said.

Theobald didn't play in the World Cup.  Yes he was there and ran around on the field but he has yet to play football in a World Cup

That bajan coach is ah mad man!!

Barbados only looked competitve in the second half.

That Bajan side supposed to get at least 5 from that Trinidad C side. Glasgow miss about 3 clear cut chances, Sealey miss one and Daryl Roberts missed at complete sitter with his first touch.

Anyways he probably only saying that to help motivate his team!

ah love it!!

except for Theobold (God only knows why)..noone on the current T&T squad can consider themselves a starter when we are full strength. And most of them cannot even make a 23-man squad. No exaggeration. This is not even a T&T B-squad. Hopefully however, we will uncover some new talent, because the experienced guys are getting long in the tooth. But please don't compare Bim losing 7 players (only 2 of which are actually good) to T&T. We are missing about 13 first squad players....I NOT even including Dwight Yorke and Latapy and not including the Jabloteh players who were not released. With our full team..Barbados will get the same manners the high flying Vincentians got..after they beat JA they cam here talking about Vincy Heat and collect 5. No disrespect to Barbados..but they not in our class yet. Now if it was Haiti, Cuba or Jamaica missing 7 starters..that is a different story. Dey could talk. Bim eh ready yet. But respect..they get a well-deserved draw...but if they want to start talking hypothetical they hadda cool it

Foreign Based Missing (excluding Yorke and Latas for those who like to say they too old):
Goalies: Kelvin Jack, Clayton Ince
Defense: Brent Sancho, Cyd Gray, Dennis Lawrence, Avery John
Midfield: Carlos Edwards, Silvio Spann, Chris Birchall, Collin Samuel (mid or forward)
Forwards: Stern John, Kenwyne Jones, Cornell Glenn

Fellas, i was sitting in the stands just behind the bajan bench... To see what drawing 1-1 with Trinidad is to them, u all shoulda see the last 5 mins. If u all think T&T killing time vs bahrain was effective, them bajans get on like the win the finals when the final whistle blow. man start to bawl and run onto the field and thing. The only thing they wint do is somersaults.

We hadda rememebr that Bim drawing with T&T is like T&T going to Mex or Costa Rica and getting a point. That is how these countries rate us, plain and simple.

Is some serious prayers for tonight vs Martinique.

Is good to know that a full strenght BIM squad would have beaten TT.

But dis  TD forget to say what a full strength TT squad would have done to BIM.

Dis is probably the highlight of Barbados' footballing year. And the sad part is they think they actually playing Trinidad. I have a feeling, W Conn or SJJ could beat dis squad.

Peace,
